5-0 out of 5 stars An imaginative and innovative page turner
Dennis Spalding created a new sci-fi fan with his book Lazarus Man: Resurrection, a well-crafted, easy read about a terminally ill man who has his body cryonically frozen while awaiting future medical advances that could save him. There is no "clutter" in this book!Readers are thrown right along with main character Neil Jonathan Johnson into a drastically changed world and struggle with him through a vast array of emotions as he encounters love, loss, and a newfound need for revenge. There is only one negative about this imaginative and innovative page turner - having to wait for Book 2!

5-0 out of 5 stars Quirky and Unusual Characters Make this Fun
What can I say about this unusual book? It's a fun story, with unexpected twists and genuine humor. The characters seem real and there are enough entertaining cultural references to keep you involved until the very end.
Science fiction isn't my thing.I don't hate it or anything, but my tastes favor reality over fantasy, and mystery over romance.Still, Lazarus Man brought enough reality and mystery to intrigue me.The fantasy isn't all that fantastic, and the romance isn't sickly sweet. In fact, the romance - loose definition here - has enough quirks to make it memorable!
Actually, quirks are a big part of what makes this book fun.The main character has a few, and so does his 106 year-old granddaughter. No wooden characters here.Spalding has a flair for character development, and a canny ear for dialog, that breathes life into some unusual places.Another way of saying this is that his characters are characters.
There is some curious science, and the medical stuff is fantastic.Perhaps any novelist looking ahead a century or more wrestles with an uncertain future.Medicine today might seem equally curious to a doctor from 1910, so I'll let him off the hook for this.
But medicine's just the sideshow. This book is first and foremost about the characters and settings.I think you'll come to like Neil Jonathan Johnson and his rambunctious romp through Northwest Missouri.More importantly, I think you'll be waiting for the promised second installment of The Lazarus Man Chronicles.

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST READ
I started reading this book because the setting for the book is from where I live thought it might be neat although I am more into reading books like Twilight and love stories this book was great. It is very cool to read about what the world might be like in 100 years but the story is very easy to read and was very suspenseful you just kept wanting to know what was going to happen. I am very much anticipating the next book. This is definitely not a waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book "Resurected" my interest is SCIFI novels again!
Far to often have I picked up a SCIFI novel and It been such a piece or garbage. It seems like everyone is completely unoriginal, uninteresting and generally unreadable. Every book is always involves Overord Zargax from KremulonXII or Lord Prince Saucymeat in the Land of whimsical mages. This book is truly set aside from the rest and easily captivates you. One of this books strengths is the character development, and Dennis does a good job at that. Nothing in this book seems that incrediblyfar out and it seems that any of the more "Scifiey" things that are in this novel have had research done about them and even explain it a bit. You can truly tell that the author cared about what he was writing and didn't just throw this together on the fly by night express for a quick buck or two. Overall I would definitely recommend this book and would like to see more come from this author. ... Read more

Excerpt: 2001: A Space Odyssey (occasionally referred to as simply 2001) is a 1968 epic science fiction film directed by Stanley Kubrick released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke. The film deals with thematic elements of human evolution, technology, artificial intelligence, and extraterrestrial life, and is notable for its scientific realism, pioneering special effects, ambiguous imagery that is open-ended to a point approaching surrealism, sound in place of traditional narrative techniques, and minimal use of dialogue. The film has a memorable soundtrackthe result of the association that Kubrick made between the rotary motion of the satellites and the dancers of waltzes, which led him to use the The Blue Danube waltz by Johann Strauss II, and the famous symphonic poem Also sprach Zarathustra by Richard Strauss, to portray the philosophical evolution of Man theorized in Nietzsche's homonymous work. Despite initially receiving mixed reviews, 2001: A Space Odyssey is today recognized by many critics and audiences as one of the greatest films ever made; the 2002 Sight ... Read more

Excerpt: Immortality (or eternal life) is the concept of living in a physical or spiritual form for an infinite length of time. As immortality is the negation of mortalitynot dying or not being subject to deathit has been a subject of fascination to humanity since at least the beginning of history. The Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the first literary works, dating back at least to the 22nd century BC, is primarily a quest of a hero seeking to become immortal. What form an unending human life would take (as well as whether it is subject to incapacitation), or whether the soul exists and possesses immortality, has been a major point of focus of religion, as well as the subject of speculation, fantasy, and debate. It is not known whether human physical immortality is an achievable condition. Biological forms have inherent limitations which may or may not be able to be overcome through medical interventions or engineering. 1-0 out of 5 stars Not a trace of editing
This is without a doubt the worst book I have ever seen in my life. Thereis no way it could have even been glanced at by an editor. It looks like anaccidental publishing of an early pre-writing draft. First, the book hasfive parts, but it goes directly from the Introduction (the largest part ofthe book) to Part II. Second, one of the parts (on the history of burial)is literally one page long and is totally unnecessary. Third, there arecountless typos, the worst being paragraph breaks in the middle ofsentences. But worst of all, it is painfully obvious that portions of thetext are lifted directly from Cryonics Institute literature (e.g., in adescription of the suspension process, there are references to "ourdewars" - but the author is not affiliated with the Institute). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Weirdos are great.
This book is a must for collectors of ridiculous propaganda and general oddities. Great for the coffee table, or for reading on the bus if you don't want the person next to you to try to talk to you. I especially enjoyed the part about the legal rights of the deceased future frozen. Totally five stars for camp value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Necessary Reading
"Cryonics: Reaching for Tomorrow" is necessary reading for anyone considering cryonic suspension as an alternative to the traditional "burn or bury" method of dealing with the dead.Though cryonics is by no means a proven technology (with no successful re-animations at this point), at the very least, it holds a possibility of extended life in the future. This concept was once regarded as science fiction or pseudo-science...but then again so was cloning. If you read this book, you will undoubtedly see the plausibility of cryonic suspension, and will perhaps think twice about how much you truly value your own life.

An editorial point-- this book should be listed with two authors: Michael Darwin and Brian Wowk. ... Read more
