Product Description
Moving rapidly from science fiction to science fact, cryopreservation is an integral part of many research, development, and production processes in industry and academia. The preservation sciences have emerged as an interdisciplinary platform that incorporates the fundamentals of cell and molecular biology, and bioengineering, with the classic methodological approaches to freezing and drying living matter. Researchers and biotech companies must scramble to learn about, and adopt, the new preservation strategies that incorporate the classic and the new molecular-based approaches.

The first reference of its kind, Advances in Biopreservation addresses the breadth of the field of biopreservation. Written by recognized international leaders in biopreservation, the book expertly integrates recent molecular-based discoveries with classically-based biopreservation basics, offering a new look at advances in the emerging regenerative medicine arena. In addition to general concepts of biopreservation, it includes chapters detailing subspecialty principles, such as biologically active macromolecules, stem cells, and gene therapy, as well as new protocols for cell, tissue, and organ preservation.

The classically based approaches to biopreservation are now recognized as bottlenecks to advances in the emerging regenerative medicine arena. Recent discoveries have changed the basic foundations upon which the preservation sciences were built. Integrating the concepts of first generation cryopreservation with the new paradigm, this book is a fundamental reference to the latest advances in the field. ... Read more

Product Description
The McMurdo Dry Valleys form the largest relatively ice-free area on the Antarctic continent. The perennially ice-covered lakes, ephemeral streams and extensive areas of exposed soil are subject to low temperatures, limited precipitation and salt accumulation. The dry valleys thus represent a region where life approaches its environmental limits. This unique ecosystem has been studied for several decades as an analog to environments on other planets, particularly Mars. For the first time, the detailed terrestrial research of the dry valleys is brought together here, presented from an astrobiological perspective. Chapters include a discussion on the history of research in the valleys, a geological background of the valleys, setting them up as analogs for Mars, followed by chapters on the various sub-environments in the valleys such as lakes, glaciers and soils. Includes concluding chapters on biodiversity and other analog environments on Earth. ... Read more

Product Description
First published in 1987, The Effects of Low Temperatures on Biological Systems takes a broad view of the interactions of low temperatures with biological conditions. The topics covered range from molecular effects to whole organism behaviour and include practical applications in medicine, agriculture and the food industry. This integrated, multi-disciplinary approach to cryobiology presents a wide spectrum of topics linked by theory and interpretation, provides a unified concept of the subject and may stimulate fruitful pathways for further thought and research. The expert contributors to this book were chosen by the editors to represent an integrated science of cryobiology. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
"Animal Life at Low Temperature" is concerned with the behavioural, physiological and biochemical responses of animals to cold, including details of anatomical adaptations. It draws together the results of recent research into topics such as hibernation, antifreezes in fish, the evolution of warm-bloodedness and the importance of cold to evolution and extinction. The book opens with a chapter devoted to the basic concepts of the chemistry and physics of low temperature, the biochemistry of heat production and the categorization of animals such as ectotherms and endotherms. After describing current and past temperate and arctic environments the chapters go on to describe the behaviour, anatomy and physiology of animals exposed to cold conditions. Cryobiology is dealt with in detail including the functions of fish antifreezes, thermal hysteresis proteins and cryoprotective agents. There is a large section devoted to humans, essentially tropical apes that have successfully colonized cold regions of the world by behavioural and technological means. Finally the author addresses low temperature as an agent of evolutionary change including mutation and recombination rates.Supported by numerous assimilable examples, it should provide a sound grounding for both undergraduates and research workers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absorbing
Cryobiology is the subject of this clearly written book by Lucy Kavaler; even those who fancy that they dislike biology or science in general will find this book fascinating. Kavaler writes about heart transplants andpeople addicted to eating ice cubes; people buried in snow who survivedthat experience and the longer average life span of those who in live incold climates; arctic exploration and Australian aborigines; experiments onthe relative tolerance of people to cold and hot; and a great deal more, ina nice, fat volume that reads as fast as a billboard (well, almost). Ichecked this book out from the library, skimmed it by reading huge chunks, and then went searching through the book to find any spots I might havemissed. And then I searched again, hoping to find more. Other readers willfind themselves doing the same thing. ... Read more

Product Description
Cold is the single most important enemy of life, and this book discusses the responses of living organisms to low temperatures. Subfreezing temperatures in particular affect the properties of water, which is essential to life, and the book describes the physics and chemistry of water in the .context of physiology. Injury from cooling and the way in which organisms respond and survive, as well as the mechanism of cold hardening in micro-organisms, insects and plants are discussed. The laboratory exploitation of low temperatures to preserve life and to protect labile materials, against freeze damage is also considered. ... Read more
