Product Description
Bayesian methods are a powerful tool in many areas of science and engineering, especially statistical physics, medical sciences, electrical engineering, and information sciences. They are also ideal for civil engineering applications, given the numerous types of modeling and parametric uncertainty in civil engineering problems. For example, earthquake ground motion cannot be predetermined at the structural design stage. Complete wind pressure profiles are difficult to measure under operating conditions. Material properties can be difficult to determine to a very precise level - especially concrete, rock, and soil. For air quality prediction, it is difficult to measure the hourly/daily pollutants generated by cars and factories within the area of concern. It is also difficult to obtain the updated air quality information of the surrounding cities. Furthermore, the meteorological conditions of the day for prediction are also uncertain. These are just some of the civil engineering examples to which Bayesian probabilistic methods are applicable.

  • Familiarizes readers with the latest developments in the field
  • Includes identification problems for both dynamic and static systems
  • Addresses challenging civil engineering problems such as modal/model updating
  • Presents methods applicable to mechanical and aerospace engineering
  • Gives engineers and engineering students a concrete sense of implementation
  • Covers real-world case studies in civil engineering and beyond, such as:
    • structural health monitoring
    • seismic attenuation
    • finite-element model updating
    • hydraulic jump
    • artificial neural network
    • air quality prediction
  • Includes other insightful daily-life examples
  • Companion website with MATLAB code downloads for independent practice
  • Written by a leading expert in the use of Bayesian methods for civil engineering problems

This book is ideal for researchers and graduate students in civil and mechanical engineering or applied probability and statistics. Practicing engineers interested in the application of statistical methods to solve engineering problems will also find this to be a valuable text.

Product Description

In past decades, urban water management practices focused on optimizing the design and operation of water distribution networks, wastewater collection systems, and water and wastewater treatment plants. However, municipalities are now faced with aging urban water infrastructures whose operation must be improved and expanded to maintain current high standards of living as well as new challenges such as climate change, systems sustainability and water quality issues. Integrating the latest developments in urban water hydrology and management, Urban Water Engineering and Management takes a system approach to urban water hydrology, engineering, planning and management, supplying examples and case studies and highlighting pressing issues such as urban water governance, disaster management, and climate change impacts on urban areas. The book draws attention to climate change as a main concern of this century by focusing on its impact the components of water cycle.

The book covers modeling of urban water cycle components, urban water supply, and distribution systems demand forecasting. It also presents classical issues, such as design of water distribution networks and wastewater and storm collection in urban settings, from a system's perspective. The text also includes a discussion of water governance and disaster management in urban areas and the urbanization effects on the environment and the needed water infrastructure development in urban areas. Against this background, the authors discuss the importance of understanding the principles of simulation, optimization, multiple-criterion decision making, and conflict resolution for successful, integrated urban water management. They explore integrated water management and planning solutions for incorporating structural and nonstructural means to achieve the best operational schemes at affordable costs, going beyond using the existing structures and physical limitations on water availability to include technical, social, political, and economic aspects of better water and wastewater management in urban areas.

Written and designed especially for intermediate and advanced courses/modules in water resources in civil and environmental engineering, and in urban planning, the book can be used as a textbook for civil engineering, urban and regional planning, geography, environmental science, and in courses dealing with urban water cycle. It also introduces new horizons for engineers as well as policy and decision makers who plan for future urban water and regional sustainability. Engineers and planners, especially those who work on design, planning, and management of urban systems and/or community development, can use this book in practice because it deals with a broad range of real world urban water problems.

Product Description
Great strides have been made in the art of foundation design during the last two decades. In situ testing, site improvement techniques, the use of geogrids in the design of retaining walls, modified ACI codes, and ground deformation modeling using finite elements are but a few of the developments that have significantly advanced foundation engineering in recent years. What has been lacking, however, is a comprehensive reference for foundation engineers that incorporates these state-of-the-art concepts and techniques.

The Foundation Engineering Handbook fills that void. It presents both classical and state-of-the-art design and analysis techniques for earthen structures, and covers basic soil mechanics and soil and groundwater modeling concepts along with the latest research results. It addresses isolated and shallow footings, retaining structures, and modern methods of pile construction monitoring, as well as stability analysis and ground improvement methods. The handbook also covers reliability-based design and LRFD (Load Resistance Factor Design)-concepts not addressed in most foundation engineering texts.

Easy-to-follow numerical design examples illustrate each technique. Along with its unique, comprehensive coverage, the clear, concise discussions and logical organization of The Foundation Engineering Handbook make it the one quick reference every practitioner and student in the field needs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Structural, Civil & Pipe Drafting for CAD techs
Excellent condition, highly recommend this seller, timely delivery

2-0 out of 5 stars Many mistakes in book - Editor needed right away!
A few changes recommended before (ever) reprinting this book.

-Hiring an Editor who reads drawings is imperative!

-The illustrations for exercises are difficult to read in many cases due to the stylized lettering & smallness of type. Details are difficult to see without a magnifying glass for some people. A suggestion - include an electronic copy of the illustrations on the included cd for easy review. Since most drawings are done on CAD now, get rid of the hand lettering or please make it all caps instead of lowercase.

-Before putting in a hand drawn drawing for an exercise, draw it in CAD first. There were many math errors in dimnesions & missing dimensions. One drawing even had some dimensions that evidently "moved" to where it was referencing nothing. Several drawings that were supposed to work together had discrepancies between them.

-The Appendix is missing the Angle Channel references page stated in the Appendix Contents.

-The chapter on Pre-Engineered Metal Bldgs should be thrown out. It was very frustrating to try and gather enough information from the book to do anything but guess - that is not where you want a student or teacher to be. Get rid of all the pictures of the outside of the buildings - we've all seen them before - and include pictures of the inside & detailed pictures of how they are put together. That is where we really need to see the details. This chapter had the feel that the author thought it should be included but didn't really wanted to spend the time or effort to write it well.

-I'm sorry to say that I don't trust what information is in this book because of all the errors I found. I am not the teacher -I AM A STUDENT. I have been drafting for many years but am new to the Civil & Structural field. Most of the errors were basic drafting & omitted or conflicting information. Unfortunately my teacher doesn't trust the book now either. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED WITH CAREFUL EDITING & MAKING SURE ALL INFO NEEDED WAS INCLUDED IN THE TEXT & EASILY READ.

I am disappointed that textbooks are now soft cover, can contain many errors, and yet still have a list price that boggles the mind. ... Read more

Product Description
The second edition of "Introduction to Transportation Engineering" has been developed to provide a concise yet thorough introduction to intermodal transportation. One of its underlying concepts is that the basic techniques and principles of transportation engineering are of wide application. For practical reasons, the major emphasis is often on highways, but care is taken to show how basic concepts and techniques apply to different modes. The book strives to provide a background in transportation planning, analysis, and design while emphasizing the social, economic, and political context of transportation engineering. It places major emphasis on important practical topics such as geometric design, "Highway Capacity Manual" methods, and traffic signal timing, and also emphasizes important theoretical topics such as the fundamental techniques of traffic analysis and the economic theory underlying transportation demand modeling. The text has been revised and updated to reflect the 2000 revision of the "Highway Capacity Manual". The numbers of flow charts, diagrams, and photos have been increased from the previous edition. The text also offers new open-ended design exercises pertaining to common design problems in transportation such as horizontal and vertical alignment of roads, railways, or runways; traffic design for highways; planning and design of traffic control; and design of bus routes and schedules. These exercises respond to ABET-2000 accreditation requirements, particularly to civil engineering program criteria that require 'design experiences integrated throughout the professional component of the curriculum. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money!!!!
I was expecting more from this book, the spreadsheet are not spectacular.....I have produced better ones!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars did not work for me
I purchased this in order to obtain useful spreadsheets to do design and analysis work, as I don't have the time or the access to office resources for creating and checking my own spreadsheets.I know that the editorial review mentions, and you also see after looking through the table of contents, that the author uses a couple prior projects as a backdrop for the spreadsheet calculations, but I thought that I would still be able to cherry-pick through the text and spreadsheets and get useful spreadsheet applications for my own work.

Didn't work for me.I feel that the author tried to do way too much.Half the book is on Excel, and all engineers who went to college know Excel enough to use it.Also the book discusses throughout engineering theory and practice, which overloads the material.I already know the theory; I needed spreadsheets to quicken my work.I simply wanted "Structural Engineering Templates Using Excel", but instead got a bunch of stuff that I didn't want or need.

Would not recommend.

1-0 out of 5 stars Gloriously and utterly useless...
I was heartbroken when I saw this book for sale. Why?Because I wanted to write this book.Twenty minutes after I received and opened the book I realized that the opportunity is still out there. If an LED flashlight is considered an advanced and high-tech tool for light, think of this book as a flaming, wooden torch. In fact, the book itself would be most useful in starting a fire.

Seriously, this book would only be useful for engineers over the age of ~40.If you're still new to spreadsheets it may be helpful. If you've been in college in the last ten years this book is a worthless waste of paper and ink.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ok for beginners
This book is ok for engineers who are not yet familiar with excel, but one would be better of with a excel manual and a structures text book. This book pretty much gives you the basics of how to set up a spreadsheet but, with a little time spent playing around with excel someone could figure them out on there own. The provided spreadsheet, although well thought out and planed, are nothing special and don't provide the proper detail to be used in a design office. The author does not go into any of the uses or advantages of macros and other automated features of excel which allow for greater variability in the use of spread sheets. I would recommend this book for engineers have no experience with excel and want a quick crash course in the basic features of the program, reminding them not to expect too much from it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Excel really works
The book (the spreadsheets) illustrates nicely that Excel works for a structural engineer, but thats about it.
It starts explaining Excel from scratch focusing on features that might be important for the engineer and applying examples common to an engineer, which makes it a good reference book for beginners. Afterwards, most of the book presents examples of calculations applying the functions learned in the earlier chapters of the book. There are examples from biaxial concrete column design to storage tank design.
The entire book was written using Excel and the accompanying CD includes all spreadsheets, giving the user the opportunity to revise formulas and offering a couple of handy spreadsheets.
However, the emphasis of the book lies on presenting a lot of examples elaborated by the author for some projects (mainly storage tanks). It leaves the impression that the book serves mostly to present those specific sheets and the authors work.
The layout of the sheets is awkward and the book itself proves that creating a book in Excel itself is not the best idea since the formatting of pages is a little bit difficult.
The examples are elaborated based on various codes, where the author expresses repetitively his nonconformism with LRFD. This aversion to LRFD leads to my personal favorite statement, which seems to be a little bit misplaced in a book about spreadsheets for civil engineers:
"And is Europe laughing at us because we still use old fashioned methods? Let them laugh. The way we do things has created a nation powerful enough to provide a defense umbrella and relative stability to Europe that has lasted 60+ years. Many Europeans can take a five week vacation because of our resourcefulness."
Personally, I would prefer to use an Excel manual and a good book on structural engineering.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction with antiquated economics
RAILROAD ENGINEERING is somewhat pricey for a simple update of a book originally published in the early 1950's.A good introduction to the engineering aspects of railroading but with grossly obsolete economics and operating concepts. This critic, a onetime trackman on the Erie Lackawanna (Local 1502 MOW Employees) and now licensed professional engineer, found the author's suggestion to hire vagrants as gandy dancers somewhat amusing. At half the price, this book would be a worthwhile addition to a railfan's library or to a beginning engineering student's book bag. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Effective
This book is easy to get through and explains the equations that you need well. I'm using it for a class right now, but it is a great intro book for environmental engineering.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good
The book was very good, looked like new, even though it said there were marks, there seemed like there wasn't any.It came at a reasonably good time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just as promised, thanks
the book arrived when and how they said it would in the condition they promised. Thanks!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for those who don't focus on environment, but need to learn about it
Generic and simple. I took a required class in basic environmental engineering and was pretty happy with this book. It's simple to use and does not assume and prior knowledge of environmental engineering besides common sense. Everything is explained well and without indulging into the never ending and unnecessary details as a lot of text books do. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the author wasn't trying to push an agenda (something I thought came standard with any book dealing with the environment). All of the information was objective and discussed from a neutral "know what it is, and what it does, and why" perspective. The chapter about global warming actually almost seemed to downplay the artificial and hyped up urgency and extent of the issue by focusing on only on the numbers and nothing else. Not math intensive at all except maybe a few rates of growth/decay. Solid intro course book. However if you're not interested in the subject to begin with, this book won't change that.

4-0 out of 5 stars helpful for class
Very useful book.My teacher used it a lot and the examples are really helpful. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Sample PE Exam
The Civil PE Sample Examination by Michael Lindeburg, PE and PPI is a very thorough sample examination. It is also more difficult than the NCEES Civil Sample Examination and from what I have heard is more difficult than the actual PE exam. The questions are well worded, with few ambiguities, with more variety and overall questions than the NCEES sample exam. The solutions are somewhat more comprehensive than the NCEES sample exam though I do wish they were cross-referenced to the Civil Engineering Reference Manual, also by Mr. Lindeburg.Additionally, the solutions do not always use the same notations as the Civil Engineering Reference Manual, though the discrepancies are not so great as to require too much digging for clarification.I like that the breadth problems are grouped by discipline.Overall, I highly recommend that prospective engineers use both this and the NCEES sample exam. This sample exam would be best used, I think, in the middle of your studying timeline to focus your remaining study time on your individual problem areas.Take the NCEES Sample Exam within the last two weeks of studying to get a better idea of the actual test problems.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay sample exam.
This practice exam is just okay. It's a good practice if you use it as a timed exam, and it will help identify the areas you need to spend more time studying. If your short on time for review--stick w/ the NCEES sample exam.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too difficult - source of a frustrating day
I used this book prior to taking the PE exam, as a practice test - blocked out the whole day, stuck to the schedule, etc.In general, I found the problems to be very complicated and involved (NOT six minute problems), and the test was just too difficult.I was not able to complete this test in eight hours. When I took the actual PE exam a short time later, it was much simpler, and I finished both sessions with time to spare.

I will say this - if you can take the exam in this book in 8 hours, and get over half of the questions right, then you should have no problem on the real thing.

For a set of practice questions that more closely resembles the actual exam, I recommend the NCEES published book. Those questions have a comparable level of difficulty and take about the right amount of time to solve.

3-0 out of 5 stars Broke Binding after one use
As far as reference material the book is excellent. However, I used the book last night for the first time and the first 40 pages were already coming apart from the book's binding.I want a new one!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs polishing
There are many errors in this book. Some of the problems require some obscure methods in order to solve them.I doubt the PE Exam is as hard as some of the problems in this book. The online NCEES sample exam seemed more realistic in regards to the material tested.I wouldn't recommend this text except that there aren't really any better alternatives so I would say it is better practice than nothing. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Engineering Mechanics: Dynamics (5th Edition)
The book was in the condition described. The only minor complaint is that somehow the shipping zip code was written wrong so it took longer to arrive, but other than that good service.

5-0 out of 5 stars Confusion
After some confusion thanks to an unsent email on the part of Amazon I finally got my book which is in good condition. Now I can start studying for my midterm tomorrow.

3-0 out of 5 stars Does not explain well
Overall this book is not horrible, but it's not great by any stretch of imagination. Some of the chapters are well explained, but there are also a couple of chapters, such as chapter 18, that are very unclear. There are too few examples in each chapter, and they usually fail to underscore most of the theory stated earlier, some even skip the steps that are being taught in the same chapter!Needless to say, this makes understanding the material frustrating at times. There are probably much better dynamics textbooks around.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, not great
I have taught dynamics at the university level, and I have used several different texts. This text is clear and well-written, but oversimplified, even for a one-semester undergraduate course. The problem selection isweak.
