Product Description
An attractive, lower-cost alternative to site-built homes, factory-constructed housing is becoming increasingly popular. New, more sophisticated methods of construction and strict federal, state, and local codes have resulted in safer, more attractive, and more affordable homes.Written by a specialist with over 20 years of experience in the field, Factory-Constructed Housing Developments: Planning, Design, and Construction fills the gaps in existing literature on the subject. Although some information on the design of small subdivisions and manufactured home communities can be found scattered throughout various government documents, until now there has been no single guide to the creation of new developments. This reference assembles and cites the existing literature, and adds to it useful information from the author's two decades of practical field experience. This one-stop reference explains the planning, development, and construction processes for factory-constructed housing, including everything from the roles of municipal boards, to roads and development configurations, to water and sewerage. The book also considers factors unique to manufactured home communities and modular home subdivisions. No other single volume contains the information in this book. ... Read more

Science/Engineering

"Petroski has an inquisitive mind, and he is a fine writer. . . . [He] takes us on a lively tour of engineers, their creations and their necessary turns of mind." --Los Angeles Times

From the Ferris wheel to the integrated circuit, feats of engineering have changed our environment in countless ways, big and small. In Remaking the World: Adventures in Engineering, Duke University's Henry Petroski focuses on the big: Malaysia's 1,482-foot Petronas Towers as well as the Panama Canal, a cut through the continental divide that required the excavation of 311 million cubic yards of earth.
Remaking the World tells the stories behind the man-made wonders of the world, from squabbles over the naming of the Hoover Dam to the effects the Titanic disaster had on the engineering community of 1912. Here, too, are the stories of the
personalities behind the wonders, from the jaunty Isambard Kingdom Brunel, designer of nineteenth-century transatlantic steamships, to Charles Steinmetz, oddball genius of the General Electric Company, whose office of preference was a battered twelve-foot canoe. Spirited and absorbing, Remaking the World is a celebration of the creative instinct and of the men and women whose inspirations have immeasurably improved our world.

"Petroski [is] America's poet laureate of technology. . . . Remaking the World is another fine book." --Houston Chronicle

"Remaking the World really is an adventure in engineering."
--San Diego Union-TribuneAmazon.com Review
Engineers, Henry Petroski observes, are sometimes their own worst enemies, at least so far as communicating their work to the general public isconcerned. Some engineers, of course, have been exceptions. One of theunlikely heroes of Petroski's Remaking the World, an entertainingforay into some of engineering's finest (and, on occasion, less exalted)moments, is Karl August Rudolf Steinmetz, who combined a great talent fordesign and engineering with a keenly practiced flair for self-promotion.Another is Washington Gale Ferris, the inventor of the Ferris wheel, whoconcocted several dangerous eyesores before arriving at the design familiarto amusement-park patrons.

Successful at explaining themselves or not, engineers are largelyresponsible for the world as we know it, and Petroski examines their workto discuss how good design and technology combine to produce the desiredresults. That combination involves much trial and error, and, as Petroskiwrites, "artifacts from paper clips to steamships evolve by removing somereal or perceived failure of their ancestors to achieve unqualifiedsuccess."Drawing on examples from past and present, Petroski offers anup-close view of how engineers do their work, and his history is full ofsurprises and pleasures. --Gregory McNamee ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Remaking the World Review
I found this book to be pretty interesting as to the history of some major engineering events, and people.Petroski's book tend to get a bit philosophical, but not too much. His writing is intriguiing and well researched.I bought this book for a graduate class and liked his writing enough to buy three more of his books.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent collection of essays
I've been a fan of Henry Petroski for a long time, and this book is no exception.Remaking the World is a collection of essays, most of which originally appeared in American Scientist, the bimonthly magazine of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society.

Petroski's usual engaging style and thorough research is used to tell us the story of a variety of structures, people, and concepts. And even though I'm a professional engineer, I knew hardly any of these stories already.

There's a piece about the Channel Tunnel and the over 2 century (!) history of proposals, politics, and arguments, up to its eventual completion. There is one about the Nobel Prize, which was funded and conceived by an engineer, and yet today tends to reward "pure" scientists. There's one about Henry Martyn Robert, an engineer in the Core of Engineering, and his best-known work, which is not a piece of civil engineering, but Robert's Rules of Order. And there's one called "On the Backs of Envelopes" that explores this common way for engineers to begin working on a problem.

Petroski includes enough detail and technology to keep a technical person engaged, and yet explains clearly and keeps things simple so that someone less technical can enjoy him too.One can see how he can be both a professor of Civil Engineering and of History.

Recommended for anyone who is curious about engineers and engineering.

4-0 out of 5 stars Remaking the world and ourselves
Perhaps because they have become so good that they are taken for granted, engineers don't get the respect they used to and still deserve. It was different in the 19th century, when it was an open question whether the latest railroad, bridge or tunnel would work.

Many didn't. The occasional collapse of a highway bridge in the Twin Cities today is, by 19th century standards, small potatoes.

Professor Henry Petroski of Duke University made a reputation by writing about engineering catastrophes, but in these 19 essays, most originally published in American Scientist in the early 1990s, he concentrates on successes: the Channel Tunnel, the Ferris Wheel and several others.

The tone is mildly didactic. Petroski has spent his career not only unveiling the mysteries of engineering to the non-engineers but trying to get the P.E.s to appreciate the beauty, drama and social significance of their own profession.

Although many of the essays are about well-known projects, like the Hoover Dam, Petroski illuminates some of the lesser known aspects of them.

For me, the most interesting essays were not the ones about built projects, however, but about what might be called byways ofengineering. Petroski reveals a scandal about the Nobel Prizes (that the founder, Alfred Nobel, an engineer, seems to have intended that engineers be eligible, a wish that was scotched by academics) and about the career of the man behind Robert's Rules of Order (an American, not, as I had assumed, an Englishman).

Henry Martyn Robert wrote his rules because of the difficulties he had endured during meetings about public projects he ran for the Army Corps of Engineers. Having sat through many similar meetings, I can relate, and while Robert's Rules have been useful in many venues, those kinds of meetings still tend to be unpleasant.

Well, it's easier to engineer a bridge than a crowd, and Petroski's last essay, on the Petronas Towers in Malaysia, takes us to a place where the two converge. I'd say his optimistic approach there has not been validated by experience, but it wasn't the engineering that failed.

4-0 out of 5 stars logistic and supportability issues
In Remaking the World: Adventures in Engineering, Henry Petroski writes about many man-made wonders of the world. Most intersting to me was the discussion on the logistic and supportability issues surrounding the design and development of the Panama Canal. Great book!

1-0 out of 5 stars A Literary Disaster
Henry petroski's Remaking the World is one of the most poorly-written books I have come across in years. The author purports to regale the reader with "adventures in engineering," yet the few actual case histories of engineering projects are presented almost as afterthoughts.

The first third of the book is devoted to the Engineer's thought process, supposedly a mysterious and arcane pursuit far beyond the comprehension of mere mortals. We are led to believe that it is almost superhuman to actually lose sleep over an engineering problem, and that only another engineer can even begin to comprehend the complexities of the engineer's magnificent mind.In fact engineering is largely the practical application of common sense, tempered by extensive training and strong understanding of underlying theory.

We are then led on a tour of some of the engineering marvels of the past century, including Ferris' great Wheel, the Panama Canal, and the Petronas towers. However, each short vignette falls short of the heroic level the book repeatedly attempts and fails to reach. The discussion of the Ferris Wheel concludes that the only unique factor raising the Wheel to greatness is its sheer size, but the author neglects to even mention its diameter. The chapter on the Hoover Dam discusses at length the cross-sectional structure of the dam, invisible from photographs, but fails to provide a single sketch.

The chapter on Soil Mechanics is interpolated between a discussion of the painting "Men of Progress" and a section entitled "Is Technology Wired."There is no purpose to its placement, or even to its existence. It remains, like much of the book, a story in search of a purpose. The final chapter of the book is a discussion of the construction of the Petronas Towers. While the chapter itself is on topic and addresses the sociopolitical context of the Towers' construction, it concludes the book abruptly, leaving the reader expecting some sort of final chapter tying the various stories together. In sum, this book is poorly organized, poorly written and totally lacking in overall theme. One feels a certain pity for the students of Civil Engineering unfortunate enough to have been subjected to Professor Petroski's lecture courses.

1-0 out of 5 stars FRANKLY DISAPPOINTING
I am a professional translator, and frankly I found this particular dictionary to be not up to expectations, in particular since it is extremely expensive. There are many, many construction terms that are not included. Not only that, even the Spanish translation to the Preface is full of translation and syntactical errors in Spanish, Wiley should have gotten a native speaker of Spanish to do it. If the preface is full of mistakes, the rest of the dictionary is suspect.

1-0 out of 5 stars PE Review by Potter
I read this one first, then the one by Lindeburg. There is no comparison- the Potter book has too many mistakes, outdated material, its organization does not mirror the exam's organization like the Lindeburg book does, it is not in depth enough to be of any use. After working through the Lindeburg book, I rarely even referred to this one (and the exam was a snap).

1-0 out of 5 stars Horribly outdated reference
While trying to study from this book I found many outdated references. For instance, tables and charts for the 1984 "green book" and references to the 198-something HCM.The book also has a hydraulics and hydrology slant.Even the Highway section turns into a hydralogy review loosly based on highways.Do not buy this book, instead look into the Lindeman reference.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Many Mistakes & Too Many Unstated Assumptions
The mistakes, inconsistencies, and assumptions are frustrating.I don't know if there is anything better on the market. If so, I wish I had it right now.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes and simple practice problems
This book is a simple outline of the topics on the Professional engineering Exam. Not much to work with or study from.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but has lots of mistakes.
More concise than the Lindeburg review book, but with more mistakes.Pays three dollars per substantial mistake sent by mail.I figure that's worth the price of the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What I needed
The book came within a couple days and was fairly priced and new.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's just a desk, of field, reference.
I've read several other of the reviews, and feel the need to add a little to the conversation.

This book will not make you into an engineer if you don't have the foundation knowledge required. It is a desk reference, useful mainly for a quick review, of principles outside your primary area of engineering practice, when you need a quick refresher.

I am a degreed and licensed Civil Engineer, but I am primarily a Construction Engineer.I use this book to get myself back upto speed on topics that I haven't dealt with in a while, and to do field checks on designs I'm trying to build before I call the Design Engineer.I've got several hundred text books, and years worth of journals, and technical reports available in my office. They don't fit in my breifcase and travel to the field well. The handbook does.

I wouldn't rely on the knowledge contained in this book alone, to execute a design for any complex or critical project.I doubt that any competent professional would, or should.

All said, it is worth every penny you spend on it.

4-0 out of 5 stars excelent andgood reference
I found it most complete reference for civil engineers ,I always carry this book in my travels ,I found it complete in this fields: safety and health concerns, and the most current codes changes including ACI, AISC, ASTM,
and you find powerfull data in covers systems design, community and regional planning, the latest design methods for buildings, airports, highways, tunnels and bridges. It includes sections

what do you want else ,buy it and carry all knowlege you can have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still the bestCivilHandbook
The fifth edition update mainly reflects changes in code requirements for structural engineering.Other sections seem barely changed from the fourth edition. The water resources chapter has several misprinted tables.Use the corresponding tables out of the fourth edition.

Generalle well-written and easy to follow.Useful as a supplemental study reference for the Civil PE Exam.

Could use a good bibliography.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Review/Reference Book
I'm a senior in CE this year and I have been using the 2nd edition of this book (1976) more or less daily as I work on my senior design projects. Not really in depth on any one subject, but its great if you just need to look up a formula or technique that you forgot from some class.I plan to ask for the new edition as a graduation present. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great complement to Lindeburg's book
I have done my primary prep with Lindeburg's reference manual and have been very happy with it. There are occasions when I don't have understand the topic or aren't able to quickly put my fingers on the information in that massive book and this has been a fantastic resource. I plan on getting rid of all my materials when I pass and only keeping this book for my continued reference.

If you need a brush up on topics and concepts throughout the depth portions of the exam, this book alone won't get you there, but it is a great addition to your library as an additional resource. Highly recommended!

As a total study package, I recommend Lindeburg's reference manual and practice problems, NCEES sample exam, 6 min problems and solutions in all topics (they are broken up in breadth and depth) and Civil Engineering All-In-One PE Exam Guide: Breadth and Depth by Indranil Goswami. You will obviously need additional reference materials for your particular depth.

4-0 out of 5 stars All in One is a good review book
I have been preparing the PE using All in one and it is really helpful. The book is precise and concise about the topics. The Author has published also the sample exam questions and I am going to get them because I suspect from his format that they are also on target for the PE exam preparation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Material for PE Exam
This book covers NCEES requirements for the PE exam including the construction module. The topics are well laid out and easy to understand. It is written in such a concise and a compact manner that even during the PE exam, the topics can easily be referenced. Linderburg book is good, but with too much details which sometimes can be overwhelming. The worked problems in the "All-in-one" looks more like the NCEES practise problems. If you are looking for a book that can prepear you for the exam in less than three months buy this book.It is a good resource for PE exam candidates and practising professional engineers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very easy to study and learn from!
This book is simply excellent. Lindeburg is a good book to have with you during the exam, but I think I only opened it a couple times. I did not use Lindeburg to study. There is no flow to the book, although it has literally every possible topic in it (although only half of them are useful).

All-in-One is a very different book from Lindeburg. There is a very deliberate flow to it, which makes it easy to read and learn from. He gives you ONLY what you need for each subject, and it seemed to me to be comprehensive. Bring Lindeburg for the rare question that is not in this book, but I would say it contains what you need for at least 90% of the problems. Since it is a first edition, I did find some errors in the book...but they just keep you on your toes! Fix them with a pen and move on.

Oh yes, and it helps very much to take a good review class...

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Overall Reference and Learning Tool
This All-in-One book was a great reference to have on the Civil PE exam (I took the Construction afternoon session). It got me at least 4-5 questions that I could not find quickly in the CERM.It covers a broad range of topics in an easy to read format. That was of great assistance when the PE Exam threw an unexpected question at me: I could look it up and quickly learn about the topic and answer the question. The CERM is more in-depth and technical in many parts, but that also made it harder to use when trying to learn something new on the spot. The index in the All-in-One is fairly small (compared to the CERM), but it still sufficed for what I needed during the exam.I plan to keep this at work to use as a reference.
I do not regret buying this book, nor bringing it to the PE Exam.Well worth the money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for review and the PE
I bought this and the NCEES sample problem book to review for the PE exam. The Solved Problems book helped greatly in familiarizing myself with some branches of Civil Engineering that I am not involved in professionally, and that turned out to be very beneficial for the exam, since I was able to check a couple of similar problems to determine solution methodology for them. This is a very solid companion to the Reference Manual, which I highly recommend to anyone, as it was the single most important reference I had.Basically, if you're going to be taking the PE exam, this is a book you should have both to review and take with you for the day of the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to prepare for the PE
It is great being able to go through problems and how they are worked out to prepare for the PE exam.I hope this will also be a useful resource during the test. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Quite worthless
Why this book is not worth buying:

1.) The equations in the book does not match up with the equations used in the FE Supplied Reference book provided by NCEES during the FE exam so it's frustrating to study two sets of equations (with different units) for the same material. It's
inconvenient and time consuming.

2.) Each chapter has a tiny review section that supplies equations and a few examples (if examples are provided) then users can try the practice problems at the end.The problem is that the review is VERY basic and hardly skims the surface of the subject matter therefore it is not enough for a thorough review of the subject. This means, I have to grab out my old textbooks and look up each topic and review from them if I still own the textbook.

3.) Not as organized when compared to the FE Review Manual from Lindeburg (I use the FE Review Manual to study for the morning portion of the FE).

All and all, not worth buying.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good FE review
I felt this book was a good review for the CE portion of the FE exam.It would be a little thicker with more sample problems, but for the size it was great.I passed, so I can't complain.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Recommended if you are looking for real help
Feels like a slapped together attempt to make some money. No survey review. Most of the reviews are very confusing. The hydrology review is just a couple questions with manning's and Hazen equations. The review questions don't have real explained solutions.Don't waste time with this book, find something else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Quite useless
It discusses indetail obvious stuff, and then references you to textbooks for more advanced topics. So it is more of a basic reference for the things you practice everyday, than a way to help you remember the topics you did during your undergrad degree

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay
This book is okay. It's not very in-depth.I would pay the extra money and get a more thorough study guide. ... Read more

Product Description
A real life civil design project for site development is recreated through each chapter in this book to prepare readers for what to expect when working in the field.Coverage begins by introducing the basic setups and standards that anyone beginning a civil design CAD project should know, then moves on to the fundamental concepts common to most civil engineering projects such as grading, contours, and surveying.Readers will then explore the process of creating different types of drawings typically necessary for civil design and see how changing parts of a design can affect the entire project process. The book concludes with methods for estimating quantities for the different types of materials and work that will likely be encountered in an actual drafting assignment. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Okay intro book but too expensive
As the first reviewer wrote, this is something like a Cliff Notes version of the book you were hoping for. It's only 152 pages long, including the contents pages and index. There are a fair amount of illustrations so the actual text is reduced again by that much. The book's pages are only 6"x9" despite the impression from the picture that it is much larger. The included CD has a few CAD and other files to use as a basis for the exercises but other than that is basically empty.

FYI, you can see the table of contents at the Library of Congress website or at the publisher's website.

If this book were $10 or even $20 it might not be a bad deal, but the publisher's list price is ridiculous and I felt obliged to ding the review one star over the price issue.

Contentwise, I think it's okay if you looking for an AutoCAD oriented introduction to civil drafting. It is well organized and mostly written in straightforward, easy-to-understand English.I haven't yet done the CAD exercises but at a glance they look like they support the material adequately.

Unfortunately, if you want more than a basic introduction to the subject of civil drafting, you'll have to look elsewhere. And if you are looking for a book full of material that would be helpful in civil design and engineering this is not the book for you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cliff Notes version of book I was expecting...
This book is such a basic and broad introduction to civil drafting that I double-checked that it was the one I had ordered.Unless you know NOTHING about civil engineering or AutoCAD, I suggest you skip this book and order something with a little more information. This book is so content-less that I'm shocked the publishers thought that they could get $45 for a $10 book. ... Product Description

Materials for Civil and Construction Engineers, 3/e is ideal for courses in Civil Engineering Materials, Construction Materials, and Construction Methods and Materials offered in Civil, Environmental, or Construction engineering departments.

This introduction gives students a basic understanding of the material selection process and the behavior of materials — a fundamental requirement for all civil and construction engineers performing design, construction, and maintenance. The authors cover the various materials used by civil and construction engineers in one useful reference, limiting the vast amount of information available to the introductory level, concentrating on current practices, and extracting information that is relevant to the general education of civil and construction engineers. A large number of experiments, figures, sample problems, test methods, and homework problems gives students opportunity for practice and review.

2-0 out of 5 stars Civil Engineering Materials
Though it has a lot of valuable information, this book was a little less descriptive and harder to follow along.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for solid knowledge without much flare
I used this book in class. It isn't the most modern-looking or modern-feeling book by any means. However, the information is provided in a straight forward and simple way. There isn't too much unnecessary elaboration like many other textbook authors try to do to prove their credentials to the reader. At a personal level, I personally found the book really interesting. The information presented here was different than the average engineering book. This was a more of a guideline for design and explanation for why things the way they are - not a list of equations that you blindly follow. The examples are worked out clearly and everything seems to make sense right away. The book is relatively basic (at least my understanding of what basic is) but not boring. Good for people that want to understand whats going on. Its also not too math involved. As I said before, the different sections tend to outline the basics of a topic (concrete for example) and then the author goes step by step explaining how to design a mix for a specific purpose and how every property you choose will affect the outcome. Chances are you don't have a choice in whether to buy the book or not since its for a class, but if not, for what its worth, I recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good for beginers
I liked the subjects covered for beginers but more in depth and solutions are needed for future civil engineers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read.
This book was easy to read and follow along with. The information is mostly well laid out and the example problems are ok, could use more.Biggest downside was that the answers were not in the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
The seller was good about replying to my message, and the book got here in adecent amount of time in good condition.Would purchase from this seller again. ... Read more
