Product Description
This best-seller bears the hallmark of all John McMurry’s books.  On style, it is concise and avoids the ‘wordiness’ of most GOB texts.  On substance, it is unusual in its balance of chemical concepts to explain the quantitative aspects of chemistry, and provides greater depth of insight into the theoretical chemical principles.  This makes for a wider spectrum of the different angles from which to view chemistry, and thus, captures a greater number of readers. With a focus on problem solving and engaging discussions of relevant applications, this volume effectively covers the essentials of allied health chemistry and puts it in the context of everyday life. This revision adds two new authors; the author team now includes a specialist in each specific area of GOB (David Ballantine, General Chemistry; Carl Hoeger, Organic Chemistry; Virginia Peterson, Biochemistry). Measurements, Atoms and Elements, Nuclear Radiation, Compounds and Their Bonds, Chemical Reactions and Quantities, Energy and Matter, Gases, Solutions, Chemical Equilibrium, Acids and Bases, Introduction to Organic Chemistry: Alkanes, Unsaturated Hydrocarbons, Alcohols, Phenols, Ethers, and Thiols, Aldehydes, Ketones, and Chiral Molecules, Carbohydrates, Carboxylic Acids and Esters, Lipids, Amines and Amides, Amino Acids and Proteins, Enzymes and Vitamins, Nucleic Acid and Protein Synthesis, Metabolic Pathways for Carbohydrates Metabolic Pathways and Energy Production, Metabolic Pathways for Lipids and Amino Acids. A useful reference for allied health professionals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great shtuff
I definitely would recommend getting this book not new, but very lightly used, mine is perfect even though it is not brand new. Thanks!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book, ususally lasts through 2 semesters
I bought this book from a classmate but thoroughly enjoyed it. It is pretty easy to understand although chemistry takes of studying. It covered 2 semesters. general and organic chemistry.

1-0 out of 5 stars Meh.
Firstclassbooks mailed this to me pretty quickly. But the other book I ordered, was a total fail. They didn't have the book I needed, and there were a bunch of other problems with it. I was really disappointed. I had high hopes for them.

1-0 out of 5 stars wrong book, if you were looking for the text book.
I was looking for the Chemistry text book. and i bought this instantly after i just took a look at the pic.

but If you are looking for the Chemistry text book, like me, THIS IS NOT A TEXTBOOK. it is a workbook that is go along with, and it's in pretty good quality.

BUT this is not a the textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
I'm a CJ mayor the college book store was selling the book for fifty dollors thank u very much. delivery was excellent and the book was in excellent conditions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Buy the bound version!
I'm sure the bound book is easy to read and easy to use.The Kindle version requires you to move back and forth between questions and answers. If you accidentially hit the wrong key, you go back to the beginning of the chapter or the next chapter.Plus, the Kindle version does not have the Periodic Table included --(it's in the front cover of the bound book) -- what chemistry book doesn't have a Periodic Table?Kindle textbooks are probably good for English and history but not for chemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great book
Simplest book so far on basic chemistry and as advertised it helped me to better grasp Chemistry as it relates to Biology. ... Read more

Product Description
The image on the front cover depicts a carbon nanotube emerging from a glowing plasma of hydrogen and carbon, as it forms around particles of a metal catalyst. Carbon nanotubes are a recently discovered allotrope of carbon. Three other allotropes of carbon-buckyballs, graphite, and diamond-are illustrated at the left, as is the molecule methane, CH4, from which nanotubes and buckyballs can be made. The element carbon forms an amazing number of compounds with structures that follow from simple methane, found in natural gas, to the complex macromolecules that serve as the basis of life on our planet. The study of chemistry also follows from the simple to the more complex, and the strength of this text is that it enables students with varied backgrounds to proceed together to significant levels of achievement. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Return
Unfortunately, I had to return the product. But the return process went smoothly as suspected. Thanks for everything!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite ALL the answers you'd expect
I originally purchased this item to be able to check my answers to the All practice problems at the end of each chapter - especially the ones that did not have an answer in the back of the book. I thought that this solution manual would give answers to each question, but it only gives answers to the questions that already have answers in the back of the book (as well as the practice problems throughout the chapter). Pros: the answers reported are more detailed and show steps taken to derive a final answer; the practice problems in the green boxes throughout the chapter are ALL worked through in the answer key. Cons: I have found discrepancies in this solution manual and the reported answer in the back of the textbook. In the 6 chapters I used the solution manual, I found 3 typos. Overall you can't beat having MORE details to help problem solve. I certainly needed it in my chem course. However, if you are doing OK with the answers reported in the back of the text OR you already have access to the online Wiley Plus resources, you probably don't need this solution manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chemistry:The Study of Matter and Its Changes
Buying and receiving this book was very easy. The book came when expected and it was in excellent condition. As a matter of fact, it was in such great condition, I still think I was sent a new or overstocked book instead of a used book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal for the autodidact
More than 25 years ago I took general chemistry in college and then never had a need to use the skills and knowledge...until recently. Now having made a bet with a colleague that I could pass an Organic Chemistry course on the first attempt, I don't intend to lose. I determined that I needed to tune up my general knowledge of chemistry. I checked out several college level texts from local libraries, but found them either arcane and opaque, woefully outdated, or far too superficial. Then I found an earlier addition of Chemistry: Matter and Its Changes and found it straightforward and remarkably clear and readable. So I took the risk and bought this edition.

I've had this text in my hands for two weeks now and am well into the third chapter. I try to work through 8-10 pages daily and then work through 10 or 15 of the problems in the back of the chapter. Brady and Senese write well and bring a high degree of clarity to the subject of chemistry, and while I am starting to recall, with surprising detail the Chemistry I learned in 1984, I am also learning much that I either missed or misunderstood back in college.

Of course having only read the first three chapters, and not being a professional chemist, I cannot be certain that I am learning all that a chemist needs to know, but having obtained degrees and a doctorate in other fields, I do feel that I know the difference between a well written text and a poor one and I have every confidence that by the time I work through Chemistry: Matter and It's Changes I will have sufficient knowleged to meet the "instructor approval" pre-requisite and take and pass Organic Chem.

I'll check back in 6 months and let you know!

1-0 out of 5 stars It's pretty shaky
This book covers a lot of topics thoroughly without providing enough explanation and analysis. Organization of this book is pretty crappy. It does not provide easy-to-understand format and it jumps from seemingly unrelated concepts to another. It needs a lot of improvement on conciseness, so that it doesn't make a simple concept hard to understand.

For example,

(this is taken from page 225)

This is inconvenient. If we want to calculate the internal energy change for the reaction, we'll have to measure its volume change and then use Equation 6.9. To avoid this problem, scientists have defined a "corrected" internal energy called enthalpy, or H. Enthalpy is defied by the equation

H = E + PV

From the Greek en + thalpein, meaning "to heat" or "to warm."

That's about all the initial explanation available about enthalpy. Later, it explains (implicitly) what "enthalpy" means, only if you are able to sort of "decipher" the explanation.

*Note that there is a typo where it says "enthalpy is defied by the equation where it should be "defined" instead of "defied"

Overall, I don't recommend this book at all. I prefer "Chemistry 8th edition" by Raymond Chang ... Read more
