5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
This book is extremely helpful to study from. You get to practice all types of Regents problems. Regent Chemistry questions are usually repetitive. It won't be the same exact question but it will be very similar. The Regents curve is horrible so if you're planning to do well, you better know how to do all the problems. For example, I got a 96 and only got 2 questions wrong. So just know your stuff and know how to do every problem in this book and you're set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great test book
If you're taking the Chem regents and know the material pretty well, this is the one for you.
However, if you're not so great at Chem, you'd best be looking for the blue book, Let's Review: Chemistry, the Physical Setting (Let's Review Series) or the combination one, Chemistry Power Pack: The Physical Setting (Regents Power Packs).
Barron's makes great review books for the regents--they've got a lot of actual tests along with great explanations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Easy to Follow
This book is very practical and easy to follow. Most of the materials are household items or easy to find.

5-0 out of 5 stars My eight year old daughter asked for a chemistry set ...
My eight year old daughter asked for a chemistry set for her birthday; a realchemistry set; one she could do real experiments with. There are no longer many quality chemistry sets on the market. I guess the safety regulations are too strict; making it unprofitable to sell "real" chemistry sets. I ordered this book. I was concerned I would end up having to mail order supplies, but I made one trip to the grocery store and my daughter was set to work through the book.

The coolest part, to her, was the potential danger inherent with some of the supplies. She worked through six experiments in three days and proudly tells her younger neighborhood girlfriends "Sorry, You can't touch those things. It's too dangerous. It's Chemistry."

The best part for me, the experiments are carefully arranged in a progressive manner so that they start from thesimplest and safest activities. She can work through them in order, with supervision, safely building her confidence and skills.

Unlike many books that purport to promote science, but are really just a collection of entertaining activities, this book includes the science concepts behind the wow. So, she really is learning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for learning basic chemistry concepts for kids
I originally ordered this for my daughter from the library and she loved it so much we bought it.Most projects are one page to its very simple and step by step. I even learned a few things as a father!

But more importantly its great for working on along with your children together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Science Stuff for Kids!
My boys are 6 and 7 and they LOVE doing the Science experiments in this book. The items needed are easy to find, usually common household item, but nothing too fancy. It has really changed how they view "science" and it's fun to see them question what they are learning. You can never get the gears cranking at too young an age and this book opens the door to a interesting introduction into the world of science.

5-0 out of 5 stars My kids LOVE chemistry now!
Janice VanCleave's Chemistry For Every Kid is a must have book for upper elementary/middle school science teachers. The experiments are easy to set up and the kids LOVE them! Janice has tackled tough Chemistry concepts and come up with simple experiments that the kids ACTUALLY understand! I have used the activities in this book numerous times and couldn't recommend this book highly enough. The way I use the activities in this book, along with the others in the series, is set them up as stations and have the kids rotate through them. You will not be disappointed with this purchase and your kids will love you for it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
My son is 4 and it really turned him on to science.Probably better for a bit older however if the curiosity isn't there yet.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cute, but disappointing
The idea of putting personality into chemistry does make chemistry more interesting, but I think the personalities would make more sense if they represented THINGS, rather than CONCEPTS, because THINGS can interact with each other. So a personality for each element would be cool but a personality for the Periodic Table doesn't make sense. The table could be a place where the elements like to live, like an apartment building, but the apartment building wouldn't have a personality. ... Product Description

For two-semester or three-quarter courses in General Chemistry.

McMurry/Fay makes the right connections in general chemistry topically, visually, and quantitatively.  Chemistry is mastered when students make the right connections in three key areas; topics that are related, conceptual reasoning with quantitative work, and the different modes of communicating information.  McMurry/Fay breaks through the boundaries traditionally imposed by textbooks that have historically made it difficult for students to make these connections on their own.  Topic Connections, Conceptual and Quantitative parallel presentation, and Text-Graphic Integration Objects make these critical connections clear and visible, so students see the chemistry the first time.  When you see the connections, you see the chemistry.

Students don’t use textbooks exactly the same way they used them in the past.  The new layout of MF5 was designed to map to the way students seek and process information, and is based on conversations with students about the way they study.

Product Description
The Solutions Manual, prepared by Jan W. Simek of California Polytechnic State University, contains complete solutions to all the problems. The Solutions Manual also gives helpful hints on how to approach each kind of problem. This supplement is a useful aid for any student, and it is particularly valuable for students who feel they understand the material but need more help with problem solving. Appendix 1 of the Solutions Manual summarizes the IUPAC system of nomenclature. Appendix 2 reviews and demonstrates how acidity varies with structure in organic molecules, and how one can predict the direction of an acid--base equilibrium. Brief answers to many of the in-chapter problems are given at the back of this book. These answers are sufficient for a student on the right track, but they are of limited use to one who is having difficulty working the problems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The True Survival Guide for Organic Chemistry
I neglected and ignored this book for the first part of the course, and this was reflected in my grade. However for the second part of the course, I attempted almost every problem in each chapter, and used the solutions manual to check my work. Not only were the answers very helpful, but I didn't use the access card at all.Wade provides plenty of material to let the student grasp organic chem concepts.

If your text book is Organic Chemisty by Wade, this solutions manual is a MUST-HAVE.The book has many problems, and only some have the answers in the back so that you may check your answers. But there is very very few questions in the book that show you how to solve it.The solutions manual shows you step-by-step ways to solve the problems and gives you tips and reasons why the answer is the way it is.I cant imagine having taken Organic without the solutions manual.Taking this course with our this manual is just making this class 5x harder for no need!I highly recommend this book! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars CHEM 2319-1
highly recommended in companionship with the Organic Chemistry text book

bought for my ochem class

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted!
Although it is not brand new, it is intact and suit my purpose, not really highlighted at all. As a purpose for checking my HW answers and as a study guide, it is totally worth it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Study Guide/Solutions Manual
I've been using this solutions manual for about six weeks now, and I have found it generally helpful. I mainly only use it for the solutions to problems section, which is most times explanatory on answers. Rarely, however, a solution's explanation can be confusing, and sometimes the solution itself is very ambiguous. The study guide section for each chapter is very concise, and is to be studied only if one has read the actual textbook. Some sections aren't explained at all, and are left to the reader to re-read the textbook. These sections are ones that cannot be thoroughly explained without going into textbook-like detail, so I think that it is appropriate for the solutions manual to do this. Overall, I would definitely recommend this to someone who has the textbook, as the exercises in the textbook are most times not enough to supplement your understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must
If you're in an ochem class that uses the Vollhardt and Schore textbook, I very strongly recommend buying this solutions manual. For each chapter it provides a section-by-section summary of the most important points and for the end of chapter questions it gives very detailed explanations of the answers. If an answer has the possibility of being unclear, it will explain, draw arrows, etc to make sure anyone can understand it. My favorite part is that it warns you about "tricks"; for example, in bold letters it will say tell you, "make sure you DON'T do this here", etc. Definitely worth the extra cost!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Manual!
This solutions guide is really great. The answers to all of the problems are given (mostly with detailed solutions). There are also very short guides that supplement chapters in the book. I would STRONGLY recommend this manual for anyone using the Vollhardt/Schore Organic Chemistry textbook. ... Read more

Product Description
Known for many years as Barron's Easy Way Series, the new editions of these popular self-teaching titles are now Barron's E-Z Series. Brand-new cover designs reflect all new page layouts, which feature extensive two-color treatment, a fresh, modern typeface, and more graphic material than ever-- charts, graphs, diagrams, instructive line illustrations, and where appropriate, amusing cartoons. Meanwhile, the quality of the books' contents remains at least as high as ever. Barron's E-Z books are self-help manuals focused to improve students' grades in a wide variety of academic and practical subjects. For most subjects, the level of difficulty ranges between high school and college-101 standards. Although primarily designed as self-teaching manuals, these books are also preferred by many teachers as classroom supplements--and for some courses, as main textbooks. E-Z books review their subjects in detail, and feature both short quizzes and longer tests with answers to help students gauge their learning progress. Subject heads and key phrases are set in a second color as an easy reference aid. Barron's E-Z Chemistry covers all important chemistry topics, from atomic structure and chemical formulas to electrochemistry and the basics of organic chemistry. Three full-length tests are included with answers fully explained, two of them modeled after the SAT Subject Area Chemistry Test. A method of diagnosing students' strengths and weaknesses by topic area is included with each test. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice to do business with Amazon. Keep commitments.
I satisfy with Amazon products and commitments. I like to do business with, in the past, and so will the future. I rate them with high mark.

3-0 out of 5 stars No frills, some errors
This book is a very basic, no-frills review of high school chemistry that boils down the most important topics into brief chapters. I bought it to study for the PRAXIS II Chemistry content exam; I dislike the "Dummies" and "Idiot Guide" series' corny puns and comics, so I bought this one instead. The three practice exams were somewhat helpful for finding gaps in my knowledge. Unfortunately, I found several errors that might confuse a student trying to learn chemistry the first time around (i.e. missing multiple choice answers, incorrect calculations, unhelpful explanations for answers, etc.). The electrochemistry chapter is especially bad -- I don't think I ever fully understood the subject and this book made it more confusing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great help for tough Chem Classes
I've looked at Chemistry book after Chemistry book to help my 11 & 13 yr olds with their chem classes.Barrons gives excellent, easy to understand explanations. Each chapter details what it will go over.Important information (that my kids continue to see on tests) is highlighted in the margins. There is a "self-test" at the end of each chapter to you can make sure you KNOW what you're talking about. My kids are now getting better grades in their extremely difficult chemistry classes at their charter school.

I've found that no one chem book seems to give all the answers, or at least in terms the lay-person every person can understand. I think this is an excellent addition to any beginner Chemistry library.I don't know if it's the right book to review for you AP exams, but neither I nor my kids are at AP level yet.

The two-part, fifth edition of Advanced Organic Chemistry has been substantially revised and reorganized for greater clarity. The material has been updated to reflect advances in the field since the previous edition, especially in computational chemistry. Part B describes the most general and useful synthetic reactions, organized on the basis of reaction type. It can stand-alone; together, with Part A: Structure and Mechanisms, the two volumes provide a comprehensive foundation for the study in organic chemistry. Companion websites provide digital models for students and exercise solutions for instructors.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book
The book is very new, but it took a long while for it to arrive.
After I ordered this book, it was delivered after two weeks. This is a little bit too long.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing
As a previous review suggested, this book fell short of expectations. There are in fact quite a few errors (i.e. pentavalent carbons, etc.); such errors are especially prevalent in the problem section of the book. Moreover, the book does contain many outdated problems.

Although the organization of the book isn't horrible, it isn't a very readable text, mainly due to the detail they go into in explanations of seemingly irrelevant things. In other words, this book is not very conducive to skimming, or good at all for review; especially when it comes to the carbon acid section. Rather than simply stating general trends of carbon acids, they go into detail about the different methods for measuring the pKas of carbon acids, and the different advantages and disadvantages to such methods. While this may be of interest to some people, it simply makes the section much less readable, perhaps a short summary at the end of each section summarizing general concepts would help alleviate this error. So rather than having to sift through 20 pages of mostly worthless crap to find one simple concept, it would be briefly outlined in the end (or beginning) of a section, or chapter.

Perhaps the thing that annoys me most about this book, however, is the absolutely horrible way in which structures are presented in the book. Rather than sticking to simple Line-bond structures (or carbon skeletons, whatever you know them as), molecules are presented as an obnoxious mixture of both. In some cases (i.e. ylides, and such) actually labling carbons and hydrogen atoms can be useful. However, when you get to the problem section and see something to the effect of -CH2=C(CH2)3CH2CHO- rather than a simple line-bond structure, it becomes obnoxious very quickly. Moreover, in larger molecules, they tend to show cycles in line-bond format, and substituents as shown above. I know that being able to convert back and forth between the structures is important in organic chemistry, but if you are going on to advanced organic and you can't convert between the two, then I think you have bigger issues.
The main problem with this way of showing molecules is that it it makes it much more annoying while solving the problems (which can bw annoying enough with all the errors), especially while doing either mechanisms or synthesis problems, you have to draw out the line-bond structure anyways in order to be able to clearly visualize larger molecules, so showing molecules the way they do, in almost every case (with a few exceptions) is completely idiotic. Furthermore, the way they represent molecules in the text makes it much more prone to typesetting errors (i.e. pentavalent carbons, and the like). But who knows, maybe they are working in errors on purpose so they can revise is to bring out another edition.

In my opinion, in order for this book to be suitable for actually studying and learning adv. organic chemistry, this book needs a massive overhaul. Until them, reading this book to learn chemistry is about as effective as reading an English dictionary in other to learn English.

5-0 out of 5 stars Promptly delivered in good shape
I ordered the book one week before the class starded and it arrived on the day before class. The book is in excellent condition.

1-0 out of 5 stars 5th Edition Misses the Mark--Loaded with Errors
This review is specifically meant to refer to the latest edition (5th ed.) of this book. The earlier editions were quite good, but the 5th edition completely misses the mark.Ordinarily, one would think that a book such as this would get better and better with each new edition. Not so with this book. For some reason, the 5th edition is loaded with mistakes.....many of these appear to be typesetting errors (e.g., atoms in the wrong place, pentavalent carbons, nonsense intermediates within reaction pathways, etc.).It is terribly disappointing.I do not know what happened at the publisher this time, but, in good conscience, they really should not have released this book the way it is.It does not appear to have been the authors' fault, but rather it was likely the fault of Springer (the publisher). This looks like an example of the mindless side of capitalism....large publishing companies who have already taken over much of their competition also have ridiculous deadlines to meet quarterly earnings goals, so they rush through the publication process and end up turning out garbage. The only way that these companies ultimately avoid getting into a heap of trouble with the FTC or other consumer advocate agencies is by issuing online addendums filled with corrections to the myriad of errors. Ask yourselves, is that why you want to buy a new book..... so that you have to download a 50-page corrections addendum to fix all of the errors that the publisher missed or opted not to correct in the first place? This sort of thing is happening more and more these days in the publishing industry, even with software. And the larger and larger these publishing companies become, the more we see it. I recommend that you DO NOT BUY the 5th edition of this book; it should have been recalled by the publisher, and everyone who bought it should have received a refund. However, if you really want to buy Carey and Sundberg's book, then buy the 4th edition used; you will be much happier.Apparently, Springer scaled back on qualified staff and/or hired a bunch of publishing flunkies sometime between the release of the 4th and 5th editions of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive
This is probably the most comprehensive text book available for Organic Chemistry, Develops largely on the Part A of the book. So for a complete understanding you need to possess the Part A of the book. Largely covers the topic of Synthesis and Reactions which is an important part of the Graduate education in Organic Chemistry. Earlier editions of the book cover the same material and are almost as good as this one but each topic in this edition builds up with a different approach of Computational and Theoretical Chemistry.
The references provided in each chapter ensure the complete and total understanding of the subject and help in the student in research.
Overall a great book for the Graduate student in Organic Chemistry. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a Bad Book
This book is good, but if I didn't have my teacher alongside me explaining some things, I would definitely be lost. I also find myself going online to look for clarifications, because either the section is complicated to understand or too simple to understand properly. You should definitely get the solutions manual for this book- its very helpful when it comes time to answer problems!

Great seller. The book came in perfect condition. Sold it as used, but it looks brand new. Shipped earlier than expected.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good undergraduate inorganic text
I used this book as a junior chemistry major at NIU. The text is consise and easy to follow. Definetly a good inorganic text book. I can not say it's better than any other inorganic textbook because I've only used this one. But if it means anything, I didn't sell this one back at the end of the year!

4-0 out of 5 stars Must have item
This book gives detailed explanations to the exercises in the textbook. This is a must have if you want to truely understand the material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Short of Excellent
This book is one of the most illuminating books on Bible science I have ever had the pleasure of reading. If you want to get light on Biblical chemistry (oh yes, there is such a thing), this book is the first place to start.

Just a few marvelous revelations in this book include how to effectively pray for lost relatives, the spiritual symbolism and wondrous properties of gold, blood, light, the word of God and much more.

A must have for every Christian's library!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Combination of Science and Devotional Application!
I loved the book! I borrowed it from a neighbor but now want my own copy! Dr. DeHaan blends scientific fact and devotional teachings that excite the worship center of a person's heart! I find myself thinking of the images presented in the book and using them when I pray for people. Read it slowly to digest it well:-)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
I read this book that I purchased from a Bible teacher just a few weeks ago. I thought it was fantastic even though it was written years ago. The book confirms many of the medical components written in the Bible that no one but God could have revealed to the author.

There are many other chapters that apply just as much to Evangelical Christians today as when the book was written sixty plus years ago. This book is really timeless. It is also written in simple language that anyone can understand.

I think this is one of the best books I have ever read. I was so impressed that I purchased two more copies and gave them away and kept my copy to read again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Full of ERRORS and not the most helpful
After going through the majority of the book, I knew that it was not the best book. There were many errors and misleading information. I bought it because of the good reviews on the Amazon, but I soon realized that many of them were just used to bring up the ratings. I would not recommend this book. If you are actually serious of the SAT chem, do not buy McGraw's book!

1-0 out of 5 stars It's a fluff book
I bought this book solely based on the 11 five-star versus 3 low-star reviews. However, it was misleading. Don't know where those 11 five-star reviews came from. This book is mostly fluff, with very little valuable stuff. Of course, you may buy it--if you target only 500-600. If you want a decent score (>700), I recommend other books, such as Barron, Princeton review, and Kaplan (I bought them from Amazon). In a word, this book is superficial. Don't be fooled by those "good" reviews.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easier than the real thing, but provides alot of practice questions
I bought this book not for the review sections but for the 5 practice tests. I think practice is the most important thing if you want to score well on any exam. I found I scored better on these tests than those in Kaplan's book. I was not surprised when I sat for the real thing and found it harder than this book.

If you don't plan on investing a lot of your time into preparing for SAT Chem, and you're looking for a book that closely models the real thing, get the official Collegeboard instead (although it only has 1 practice test and no review). I did it only once, and because of the mistakes I made, managed not to repeat them when I sat for the real test (and there were quite a few opportunities to repeat them).

However, if, like me, you plan on investing a lot of time into preparing, get this book. The number of tests, despite their low difficulty level, will allow you to practice doing the questions quickly and revise basic concepts.

You should have a reference (maybe a textbook from your course.. or even google) by your side though. It'll greatly help in clarifying important concepts AND providing the information that needs to be memorized. (YES, some of the information needs to be memorized. Meaning, you cannot derive them just from knowing basic concepts)

I got an 800 for the test :)

Hope this helps!

4-0 out of 5 stars Use it for the 5 Practice Tests
I am a science teacher who has successfully prepared students for the Chemistry SAT2 for years. This book is not the greatest for its review of the material, but it is enormously helpful for its practice tests, of which there are five.

There are some typos in the tests, as well as some irrelevant/bad questions, but taking five (timed!) practice tests before the chem exam will really help you on test day. Another thing to keep in mind is that the real ETS exam will use more easily crunchable numbers since you can't use a calculator, so don't be frustrated if these tests require a few extra minutes of math (the numbers are usually a little unwieldy).

Supplement with Barron's Regents Review of Chem (the blue book...tons of multiple choice questions) and Princeton Review's Cracking the SAT2 and you'll be in good shape for the test (make sure you get a copy of the latest released SAT2 from ETS/The College Board, too. That is the most reliable indicator of how you'll do on the real thing).

Good luck!

2-0 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes to take more seriously.
There is simply too much fluff and too many errors for me to take this book seriously. I fell for a good review off another site of this book and while I admit it isn't generic and easy (Priceton Review) or long-winded and overly difficult (Kaplan), I found simple errors like another reviewer all over the place!

I even e-mailed the editors about these errors, and they said they would correct them in the new edition, but it looks like I was wasting my time. They're simply not doing their jobs because I felt like I was reading a pre-proofread book. Horrendous.

It's okay for review if you KNOW these concepts already, but if you are learning some new things, there is no way to tell what is correct and what is not. (If you know everything, play a game with how many mistakes you can find. Have fun.)

Also: I did fine on the test. Over 700, but that is because I like chem a lot and am taking ap chem right now. While this book may have helped a bit, it was excruciating. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for review of the basics
If you're just looking to review basic concepts and ideas without reading passages, this is great for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars great workbook
Great practice problems, with answers. I like that the sections refer to the lectures and tell you where you need improvement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got me a 12 on BS
Did every question in this book and saw my AAMC practice scores increase over the weeks. I did 100 questions of the book each week for 3 months leading up to the real test, and got me a 12. I am still in the process of applying, but feel much more confident with a 34 on my plate thanks to this book.

There are some errors in the book, but keep an eye out for them and consult with those PhDs you pay so much to have around on any that strike you as incorrect.

2-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Read / Practice Problems have errors?

    Cons:

Answers to some practice problems are incorrect

As a new student of Chemistry, unable to determine what is accurate/correct & what is not...

Purchased this in anticipation of enrolling into a college level General Chemistry course, with the intent of 'getting ahead' while I had free time. But as I started working throught the Chapter 1 practice questions, I noticed the answer key had some glaring errors (problems 1.9 & 1.17, for example). I'm literally with in the first 6 pages of the book & I, a novice, am finding mathematical errors?

Makes me wonder if I should trust anything I read in this...

5-0 out of 5 stars As a second language books are amazing
I struggled to understand general chemistry for about a year, my professor recommended this book and it's been so helpful, it's really easy to understand and is such a small and light size you can carry it anywhere. I plan on buying more from the series!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great tool to master the essentials of Gen Chem I
I purchased General Chemistry I as a Second Language about 1/4 of the way through the semester, when I realized I really would need as much help as I could get for this course. The textbook we used, Chemistry: A Molecular Approach, isn't bad, but my professor was awful and wouldn't offer any additional insight into what we were learning. I wanted to make sure that I mastered the core concepts necessary to excel in General Chemistry I. This book really stood up to the challenge. I had already seen the glowing reviews for this and the two Organic books by Klein, so I figured it was a safe investment.

I worked through the entire book, but where this book really was a masterpiece and was worth its weight in gold was when it came to the final chapters dealing with Lewis structures, resonance structures, and, above all, molecular geometry.

Klein shines in this book because he is one of those educators that truly knows his stuff and, above all, has a gift for teaching. He can explain complicated material in a way that makes it sound simple and helps alleviate fears while talking to you on an educated level that doesn't assume you're an idiot. His explanation on resonance structures really drove home the idea for me, bceause I wasn't quite grasping the concept 100% until his peach and pear analogy.

If you use this book as a supplement to your course, reading the corresponding chapters as you go along to make sure you grasp the material (and not just leaving it until the last minute to learn chemistry before the final) you can only come out winning in the end. I wouldn't go so far as to say it guarantees you an A, since the difficulty and fairness of the examinations varies from university to university, but if you're interested in LEARNING chemistry, you can't go wrong with this book. You will learn, and you will definitely be thankful to have learned these fundamental skills later on.

Note that this book only covers what it deems are "fundamental skills"and is not a complete supplement. For example, my Gen Chem I course covered the quantum mechanical theory of the electron, and this book didn't cover that, but I didn't expect it to. Nor is there much in the way of practice with complex mathematical/stoich questions. I would recommend supplementing this with a book like General College Chemistry by Schaum's, which should have you covered. Plus, there sadly is not a General Chemistry II as a Second Language. I wish there was, but I guess I'll have to make do without Prof. Klein's helping hand until I get to Organic in the fall.

On the whole, if you want to guarantee that you understand the fundamental concepts of chemistry, you can't go wrong with this book. $31 may seem steep, but in my opinion, this book was worth every penny for its explanation of molecular geometry alone!

1-0 out of 5 stars TYPOS EVERYWHERE
Are you serious? What is wrong with the rest of you? There are 3 major errors in the first 35 questions.Ironically it's in the part about the importance of the precision in your answers. Terrible.Returning ASAP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biochem Book
I got this book for one of my nursing classes. The book is pretty much straight forward but I would totally recommend getting the solutions manual to help you with the odd problems and it also gives you practice quizes for each chapter.

2-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the most poorly written text I have ever had the misfortune to purchase
I've not read every chemistry book out there so I'm no expert on how this book stacks up against the rest, but as someone who has had the misfortune to have to read this book and learn the material, I'm incredibly disappointed in the quality of the teaching in this book. The author has managed to cram random questions in everywhere, without managing to actually address the concept covered by her question.Due to overly full classes, I was forced to take this class online and this book just does not cut it. In every chapter, I've had to scour the internet to find an actual explanation of the concept Timberlake was attempting to cover and often find much shorter, easier to understand explanations as well as better ways to use formulas to gain the desired answer. The additional questions and challenge questions are overly redundant and many of the challenge questions are impossible without a higher level of knowledge on the topic. This is a ridiculous concept for teaching in an online class format and due to the number of topics covered, what teacher has time to cover these in class and still cover everything in the semester. It seems Timberlake put many of the questions/problems in this text to toot her own horn on the level of her knowledge, rather than write the text to actually teach and then question for understanding.I'm so annoyed by this text after 10 weeks of it that I'm actually taking the time to write this review.

3-0 out of 5 stars Amazon has a problem and does nothing to fix it
This textbook was advertised as "Brand New" and in every brand new textbook is a intro page that states that a keycode comes with the textbook yet Amazon and the booksellers they contract with continue to sell this book as brand new and ALWAYS fail to provide a keycode.A simple solution that other "honest" booksellers utilize with textbooks such as these is to advertise the textbook as "Text Only" when selling it without a keycode so buyers are never mislead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased
My book was delivered on time! The high shipping price is one thing if you get what you ordered and it is delivered on time, but maddening when you are paying for two day shipping and it doesn't make it. Very pleased, the book is exactly what I wanted. All the materials made it.The shipping was a bit expensive but as I live in Alaska I expected such.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chemistry for serious learners
I started the Fifth edition of this book a couple of years ago.I had found a copy of it and of the workbook for it, in a used bookstore and got them cheap.I finished about 300 pages, then let it slide and gave up.I thought, "this is too much math for me.I just want to learn the concepts."I read a couple of easy chemistry texts that were closer to high school level than college, then tried the Brown and LeMay (also bought used and cheap.)

Brown and LeMay have created a very well constructed, tightly honed book that is permeated with understanding of what college students are likely to find difficult. It's an excellent text and maybe a better college textbook than this one, but in the final analysis, I liked the Oxtoby better.I liked the physical chemistry orientation, chemistry is after all about real, physical stuff.I liked the clear appreciation of the achievements of the great chemists who have gone before us, and the history behind our growing understanding.I liked that it's a straight up attempt by some very deep thinkers about chemistry to communicate their understanding of the subject.I liked that it doesn't spoon feed the reader. It tries very hard to build up everything from first principles, but it doesn't cut out the hard stuff to spare the student.I'm inclined to say that it treats the student with considerably more respect than Brown and LeMay do.

I'm not a young man.I'm many decades past college and am studying chemistry purely for my own interest.I have read a fair amount of molecular biology and some biochemistry and I now feel the need for a deeper understanding of the underlying chemistry. For me, looking at this book is a little like standing at the base of a mountain, trying to get up the courage, the will power, and the commitment for the climb. But I just may make another try at it.I'm convinced that the view from the top will be grand.

If I make it to the top I'll write again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent job
Product was just as good as it said on the Web. Also arrive perfectly on time. I Will give it an A+++. Good job and thanks for delivering it in time.

3-0 out of 5 stars dirty with damaged cover
Text arrived covered in dirt with a dented damaged binding - interior seemed fine.Clearly it was poorly stored and no one took the time to clean it off before shipping. But it did arrive in time for class.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very confusing
This textbook is supposed to be an introductory textbook. However, from the explanations in the textbook, it seems to be written for students who have already had taken general chemistry. The examples are not helpful for solving the problems and the explanations are very wordy and can even be convoluted at times. The ordering of the material is also very confusing and not helpful for most chemistry students. The only good things is that it has lots of problems and they are useful for learning the material.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Less than Mediocre
While not an absolutely terrible text, Oxtoby certainly was not a great one. This book was used throughout my Physical Chemistry course. I found that the book was quite lacking in conceptual explanations for quantum, at some points using math to explain rather than words. While in an Honors Section in which the focus was to create text, examples, and problems for a textbook on Quantum, this book was useless and internet sources and journal articles were required to provide more conceptual explanations.
I found the chapters on Acid/Base and Titrations to be much more convoluted than they should or ought to have been.
For a wonderful, short, review of Quantum material I would suggest checking out Inorganic Chemistry by Miessler from your library and reading the 2nd Chapter. Having just read it for quick review for one of my classes I found it succinct and feel it would have been a nice summary and general overview before reading the quantum (esp Schrodinger and Particle in a Box) sections in Oxtoby. ... Product Description
This is the first modern textbook, written in the 21st century, to make explicit the many connections between physical organic chemistry and critical fields such as organometallic chemistry, materials chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, and biochemistry. In the latter part of the 20th century, the field of physical organic chemistry went through dramatic changes, with an increased emphasis on noncovalent interactions and their roles in molecular recognition, supramolecular chemistry, and biology; the development of new materials with novel structural features; and the use of computational methods. Contemporary chemists must be just as familiar with these newer fields as with the more established classical topics. This completely new landmark text is intended to bridge that gap. In addition to covering thoroughly the core areas of physical organic chemistry – structure and mechanism – the book will escort the practitioner of organic chemistry into a field that has been thoroughly updated . The foundations and applicabilities of modern computational methods are also developed. Written by two distinguished researchers in this field, Modern Physical Organic Chemistry can serve as a text for a year-long course targeted to advanced undergraduates or first-year graduate students, as well as for a variety of shorter courses on selected aspects of the field. It will also serve as a landmark new reference text, and as an introduction to many of the more advanced topics of interest to modern researchers. An accompanying Student Solutions Manual will become available. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Modern Physical Organic Chemistry
This is the book that made me a chemist.

I used this book in the undergraduate class taught by one of the authors. It's a very clear, easy-to-follow text, taking the abstract concepts of physical chemistry and applying them in a qualitative sense to organic chemical bonding. Using molecular orbital theory, it builds up an intuitive sense of how orbitals define the structure and reactivity of molecules.

This is such and invaluable topic, and the book is so clearly written, that I ended up reading the whole thing, even though only about half the book was assigned reading. I felt like every paragraph I read taught me something new about the way reactions work. This is one of the few textbooks from my time as an undergraduate which is comprehensive enough and important enough to keep on my shelf through my entire career as an academic researcher.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite textbook.
This is, hands down, my favorite textbook. It is extremely thorough, and as such, it can be dense reading. However, it is one of the few books that I've read that's thorough but still comprehensible. As my professor said when we started our Physical Organic Chemistry course, "If you learn everything in this book, you will know more than me."

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
I originally had the Physical Organic book from Felix Carroll. Though that book is really good, I liked this book better for its detail and illustrations. It is a very good book to review concepts as well as learn in depth organic chemistry. I'm very picky about my books but was really glad this one was able to detail a subject I was having problems with: Felkin-Ahn models. So far it has helped me in studying for my cume's and I plan on keeping it for some time.

Truly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have...
This is the type of book that you will read and reference over and over again throughout the process of learning and researching advanced organic chemistry. The book does a great job of distilling down some of the common misnomers about vocabulary and ensures a comprehensive understanding of many areas within organic chemistry from chirality to non-covalent interactions and much more. I highly recommend this book to anyone pursuing a career in organic, polymer, and biochemistry. Thanks Amazon for delivering this to me in a timely manner and the book was in mint condition when received.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Phys Org. Chem Book
Modern Physical Organic Chemistry is a must have book for anyone who studies Organic Chemistry at the graduate level and has a desire for better (and complete) understanding of the foundations for every underlying concept in the field. Without being heavily centered on the Maths and calculations behind every concept, the authors still manage to go excessively deep into each of the topic covered to give you a fantastic understanding of them. I couldn't imagine getting through a Advanced Physical Organic Chemistry class without this book as a resource, and I would recommend over any other of its kind. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars smoked up
I have purchased books from Amazon before, but this time I really dont like the book I purchase and I would really like my money back, when I received my book, I could tell it was a chain smoker who had this book it reaked of smoke I cannot put any of my notes inside the book because it smells just like smoke and the outside of the book when you close it you can tell he or she spilled coffee along the pages.Someone should have really looked over this book before selling this piece of scrap to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Condition
I received my item in about a week and a half after I ordered it. And it was in perfect condition, still in shrink wrap.

1-0 out of 5 stars Never got the item
The item never got to me. The seller never responded to my emails. It seems the seller scammed several people at the same time. Or the seller simply failed to mention that the item was being shipped from Australia, and that the postal workers are on strike. I agree with the previous reviewer who said that this seller should be banned from amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
A good find! Excellent condition. Exactly the copy I was looking for, and it shipped so quickly too! As a college student getting new books at fair prices is always important, thank goodness for amazon.com! I avoided waiting in a long bookstore line just to get to the checkout and pay too much for a junky and written all over used copy. Students check on amazon.com for your books before getting ripped off at the campus bookstores!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Made Chemistry Easy To Learn
Everything in the book was easy to understand. I am not sure how hard Chemistry is supposed to be since using this book explained all the concepts so simply. I was incredibly fortunate to be taught by Dr. Frost, one of the authors. Her style of teaching is all over this book. Direct, to the point, and simple to understand. The sections in each chapter were kept fairly short and I never felt overloaded with information. There were enough graphics, pictures, tables, and charts to explain the material visually. Interspersed in each section were practice problems to grasp the concepts before moving on and there were additional problems at the end of each chapter. This is a gem of a book and having it to study by allowed me to make an A in the class. Having never taken a Chemistry class before I didn't know what to expect. Sciences get a bum rap for being hard to understand yet I did not find this to be true at all with Dr. Frost's class or her book. Thank you Dr. Frost for your book and a really great class! ...
