5-0 out of 5 stars Basic Chem Class
I hated this book, and you will too. But you have to buy it. And it's probably cheapest here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text
I bought this to get a more in depth intro to chemistry after buying one of the quick reference books. It was just what I needed.(I went for a previous edition to save money and it has plenty of what I need. The basics aren't going to change that much.)I enjoy the clear explanations and the graphics are very helpful.More than enough problems to keep me busy if I were to do them all.It gives nice historical background and covers all the major topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, in-depth and easy to understand
This is a very well-written chemistry text. The writing is easy to follow and the follow-along example problems throughout the book are very helpful for developing a greater understanding of the concepts.I never imagined I would enjoy reading my chemistry book, but thanks to Silberberg, it's not a confusing and frustrating process; it's actually interesting and (dare I say?) exciting!

Most sections are covered very well, though a few could use slightly more detail (I'm about 16 chapters into this text and only 1 or 2 small sections felt "undercovered" to me).Overall, I am quite pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing text for freshmen, Vital reference for senior chem majors
I am currently a senior chemitrsy major who used the 4th edition of the book when I first took general chemistry back in Fall 2006. Since then, the chemistry department has changed the required general chemistry text, and the incoming freshmen have had some pretty nasty comments about the new text (which is not the Silberberg text). Even three years after first using the Silberberg 4 E text, I still find myself looking through it as a reference to fill in the gaps that upper division chemistry course texts leave out.

Acid/base, redox, electrochem, precipation, solubility, and even basic thermodynamics are just a few of the topics this text covers. I am currently using the Engel and Reid Physical Chemistry text for my second PChem course, and the general consensus is that the Egnel and Reid PChem book is awful. Both of my physical chemistry (PChem) instructors have, onmultiple occasions, brought up a reference to something in the Silberberg gen chem text in order to help us understand something that our PChem textbook ignores.

I have seen other students post reviews about errors in the textbook, and although there are errors, they are minor and few in number. There are ample examples that are shown in the text, and they are worked out step by step and explainations as to how and why certain calculations are performed to answer the question(s) asked.
I did notice an issue that was mentioned by another reviewer concerning the second or subsequesnt example problems in a section not being asnwered. This is not true. The sunsequent examples are not worked out in detail as they are for the first example, but the answers to all examples can be found in the back of the book, as well as answers for most of the end of chapter problems. The aim of this text is not to show every calculation for every problem. Rather, this text focuses on giving enough details on how to solve a few examples so that the student can go back and learn how to apply the same problem-solving method to other similar problmes.

As I stated earlier, I am a chemistry major who uses this Silberberg 4th E text as a vital resource in my upper divion courses, even though I am no longer required to have the text. In fact, I found myself buying a second copy of this textbook when a classmate who borrowed my first copy failed to return it. This text has been used, loved, and in some cases abused by numerous chemistry students nationwide, so used copies are widely available for less than $50. I found my second copy in a like new condition for only $5 (yes, that did say five dollars) at a used bookstore warehouse near Chattanooga TN.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent
Although this was a great book that quickly summarizes detailed and complex topics of organic chemistry; there is at a least one error that can really lead the reader astray. My example is the definition of aromatic compounds. The book states that cyclooctatetraene is an anti-aromatic compound. However, this is only true if cyclooctatetraene is planar. Unfortunately, cyclooctatetraene can shift out of plane thus making it non-aromatic. This little error isn't too bad but it can screw you over on a test. In summary, I believe this book is helpful in COMPLEMENTING your primary textbook.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very good
Not very impressed with this book. I'm taking organic 2 in the summer so I was excited that I would have this book to go along with the class. It is not as good as the first organic for dummies book. The author's don't use helpful analogies to help you remember things like the organic 1 for dummies author did. Some of the concepts are still very difficult to understand. I wish they "dumbed" it down a little more. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful markings
The book was in great condition. The previous owner made a few markings in the book, but they were actually helpful. Zumdahl is an easy read chemistry book. I would recommend this chemistry book to those who do not have a strong background in chemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I used this book for my AP Chemistry class last year, and this is one special textbook. It is extremely clear and straight-forward, and it explains even complicated ideas (such as acid-base chemistry, thermodynamics, and electrochemistry) completely, concisely, and with many step-by-step examples. It even outlines the basic steps to take when approaching certain types of problems. The best thing, though, is that it is highly readable - I never had to go back and reread a section to try to figure out what it was trying to say. There are also plenty of practice problems, which vary in difficulty and are designed so that students first learn the basics and then gradually learn to apply them to different situations.
The only thing I think is not covered particularly well is the chapter on Organic Chemistry, which is generally a minor subject in an Introductory Chemistry course anyway. The chapter is not actually bad, but in comparison with the rest of the text, it is definitely not as clear. It introduced some new concepts in the exercises, which did not happen in any other chapters.
I did well on the AP Exam using just this book, and I frequently loan it out to my friends who are taking General Chemistry in college.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chemistry Textbook
This book is very reader-friendly. I find it very useful in filling in what I don't understand from lectures.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Easy to Read Textbook
Normally, I would have thought a chemistry textbook would be one of the most boring books out there. When I ordered this book for my class I was pleasantly suprised. The text is very clear and relavant. Relavant in that it is full of connections to the real world. This is an excellent textbook and, as a college student, I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible
There's so much information in this book.By far the best textbook I've read, in my life. It's easy to read and easy to understand if you take it step by step. It's the only Chemistry textbook I've owned so far, but it has really helped me understand it a lot better.I bought this used for 30 dollars, and it looks great. There is a CD that comes with this book as well, but you won't get the CD unless you buy one brand new.The book itself is 99% of the content, the CD is seemingly only used for visual demonstrations of things like Bonding and Atomic structure. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Helped me survive my chem class!
I found that this book was much easier to understand than my textbook. It clarified "the big picture" for me while laying out the details as well. There are sample questions for every chapter, and advice on what teachers might ask for quizzes or tests.I bought this halfway through the semester, and it saved my grade!I only wish I had found it sooner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Review for Chem Finals!
I just checked this book out from the library, along with two other chem review books, and this is my definite favorite. Even though I would still recommend looking through several study guides, in addition to lectures to study for exams, I just don't have time to read the textbook, it's been really helpful, and it is for REVIEW not to learn solely from this text.

It has great review, short and concise descriptions, important concepts/equations/terms and sample problems. I prefer this over cliff notes for chem because all they have are practice problems. And in contrast to what another reviewer says, this isn't just for chem 101, I am preparing for my final in the second quarter of inorganic chem, it's perfect, and its got basic organic chemistry too! I'm gonna buy it to review for my PCAT exam next year : )

3-0 out of 5 stars A Decent Review -- But not for the UTTERLY confused...
This little review text weighs in just over 350 pages (a little longer than the custom textbook my undergraduate university uses). It does include everything a first year / two-semester chemistry course would cover but it does so in a very superficial manner. It appears that the book is intended for students who are struggling with their lectures and/or reading the major textbook for their course. The problem is that the language in this book is really no different-- its just shorter. In fact, I found Silberberg's Chemistrytextbook to be a little more satisfactory in the explanation department.

If this book were really going to get the "utterly confused" on the right track, it would need to do away with some of the chemistry jargon in favor of everyday language and analogies. For students who are indeed on the right track and want a concise version of a 1000+ page text, this may be the book for you-- but you might find it lacking just a bit in depth. The cover is absolutely correct in asserting that this book should be used with CH101, it won't cut it for anything higher level. For that reason, I'd suggest you take a look at some of the alternatives.Overall: C+ ... 5-0 out of 5 stars must have
If you are interested in really learning guitar , you need this book . I've wanted it for years but this is my first internet purchase . I couldn't be happier . Money well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book
Wow, this book has chords I never knew existed, and impossible to play. but I believe you can never have too many chord books, and this one was a welcome addition to my collection. Definitely a good reference book, maybe I'll get around to thoroughly studying it one day, but it's a keeper

5-0 out of 5 stars Beginners Bible for sure, good for more advanced players too
If you know someone who has started to play the guitar get them this book.Doubly if they have any interest in jazz, since that is where things head.

The first chapter of the book deals with all of the triad voicings possible, major and minor-- from power chords to very open three note chords. There is a logic to the order and that is no small claim, since there is a TON of material here.It then moves into 7th chords, with the same approach-- list every available voicing for each kind of chord.Maj7, min7, dom7, all extensions (individually and combined), diminished... you get the point. The next half of the book deals with applications-- some chord progressions, some substitution ideas, chord melody concepts, all clearly explained with lots of examples to make sure you understand.

I never got to take a lesson with Ted, but I imagine that this book is not too far off from the wealth of information he would have shared. It builds from the beginning of the book in a logical and musical way, and you can come back to it for years and years and it never gets old.

Most highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for the serious guitarist
Ted Greene is one of those who stand out from the crowd as very unique in his approach to the guitar. He opens your mind to new perspectives on building and executing chords which you would not have likely found on your own. This is an excellent resource for any guitarist intermediate through advanced.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Book
This book is very vague on most important topics in Organic I. Explains the basic need to know stuff but does not help much for tests in class, only a brush up at most after taking the class.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overall, not a bad book
I have never taken organic chemistry before so I bought this book as a preview and plan to read it over the summer before taking the actual course.I am more than 2/3 of the way through the book and overall I have to say it has been very helpful. The practice problems help to increase understanding further. The author does a good job at trying to make the subject interesting and adding in specific hints and details when applicable. However, I have noticed that topic coverage of certain subjects is a bit sparse, and I found numerous errors in the book already.I think that this book is comparable to Organic Chemistry for Dummies.I believe that book has a bit more detail and explanation. However, it lacks practice problems.Overall I think either book is a good bet.

Addition- as I am nearing the end of the book now I have discovered countless more errors. Had I known this book was so error ridden I would have never purchased it.While I think the material is good and helpful, I would not recommend purchasing this book unless you want to sort through lots of typing and content errors

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good For Class
Although I received As in chemistry, I never got the hack of organic chemistry. My professor was very good, the text was good, but somehow I missed something. This book did help though, I will say. I understood a few more things better after this. The book is very good if you need a refresher.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Supplement
Ok, let's examine the title of the book, The COMPLETE IDIOT'S GUIDE to Organic Chemistry.Well, you guessed it, I am a complete idiot when it comes to chemistry period!I took org I, decided to hold off on org II cuz I hated org I so much, and picked this book up two weeks before I took org II.The way the book is written tops--as far as explanations go--reading any ole boring textbook; however, it does not exactly replace your textbook or your prof's notes. It gave me a great summary of all the high points in org I that didn't sink in when I took it as well as what to expect in org II. The author explained basic concepts much better than any other chem teacher I've had in college, and for the record, that would be 5.I would definitely get this book if you are needing to brush up on some stuff, or if your textbook/teacher is doing a crappy job at helping you understand some basic concepts.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent review
This volume was, for me, an excellent review of information I was first exposed to many years ago in college. The text and graphics are clear and easily understandable. As a practicing physician, I found this review an excellent vehicle for enhancingunderstanding of the actions of medications (almost all organic compounds) on receptors and other proteins in the human body (also organic compounds). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 3000 chem problems solved
Very good book.

It will provide a great problem reference for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars schaum series chemistry
The book has sample problems in all aspect of chemistry.Very beneficial to high school and early college chemistry.Students are guided through very interseting questions followed by possible questions under a given topic with solutions to cross check.I highly recommendthis book to beginners in chemistry as well as advaanced chemistry students as a guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3,000 Solved Problems in Chemistry is good
I will use it to freshen up my college skills that I've forgotten.
Many good examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dispite the reviews, I really like this book...
I'm currently taking college chemistry. Book consists of 3000 questions with various general chemistry topics. Ampule amount of questions for each topic and complexity. Answers/soutions provided right below questions. Useful(at least for me)because I don't have to flip through the back of the book for answers. In addition, since my textbook only have even numbered questions with just answers on the back of the book, I can use this book to reflect to similar problems.

If you need practice with chemistry problems, (esp. when you are a science major in college/university) I would recommend this book. (If your just in high school, your textbook and study guide would be fine.)

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as it could be
1.No review of subject - only solved problems
2.Not keyed in with Schaum's College Chemistry which does have some basic theory - so you will be doing them out of order with some texts.
3.No unsolved problems to work on to test yourself.

The thing I love about Schaum's outline series is they give you a brief discussion of theory, then a few problems solved in great detail and then several more just like it with the answer but no detail for you to figure out. This book doesn't do that - each problem is solved in moderate detail and some are fairly complex so you have to be pretty sure of what they are talking about before you tackle the problem. The problems increase in difficulty within each chapter so it has some tutorial aspect there.

I would use this for review after I've completed my text and the Schaum's College Chemistry or to hunt some problem that stumped me in my textbook to see how to do it. ... Read more

This full-color, modern physical chemistry reference offers compelling applications and arresting illustrations that capture readers' attention and demonstrate the dynamic nature of the subject. The authors focus on core topics of physical chemistry, presented within a modern framework of applications. Modern applications are drawn from biology, environmental science, and material science.  Spectroscopy applications are introduced early in concert with theory; for example, IR and rotational spectroscopy are discussed immediately after the harmonic oscillator and the rigid rotar. Modern research is featured throughout, along with new developments in the field such as scanning tunneling microscopy, bandgap engineering, quantum wells, teleportation, and quantum computing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book is fine
Con: Only negative is the cover came little distorted which may have been due to UPS

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad.
As a physics major who took this class for fun, I liked this textbook. Not overly mathematical and explained things to where I could easily understand them.I don't understand the negative reviews from most of the others. This book was clear and precise. The book seemed overly qualitative, but I always expect that in chemistry courses.

2-0 out of 5 stars Confusion
I found this textbook to be very difficult to understand. It's very frustrating when important concepts and examples are left to be learned by working homework problems. It's much better to have a firm foundation of understanding and then expand from that in the homework problems instead of attempting to develop that foundation through the problems. Some of my impression of this book is probably shaped by speed of the course (quarter system). The more I learn, the more sense this textbook makes; however, while it may be useful after the fact, I've found McQuarrie's Quantum Chemistry textbook to be much easier to follow for an initial introduction to a concept.

2-0 out of 5 stars Supposedly New Textbook
The product was ordered as New, but was received with damaged edges and scars on the front cover.Very dissatisfied.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible, not helpful
I took my p-chem courses using both Engel books and were it not for my teacher I would have been completely lost.I started out reading before every lecture like I do in every course, but found that it actually hampered the learning process and I was better off just going to lecture and doing the homework.

Additionally the solutions manual skips MAJOR steps and does not help understanding at all.I now do thermochemical calculations at work, and I just end up looking at my physics books for help.

THANKS FOR NOTHING ENGEL.

I am so glad I do not go to Univ of Washington.

BTW I got an A and a B in P-chem, and A's in physics so I am not just mad at my score and taking it out on the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars only chemists like chemistry
This text book is comprehensive and is used in my chemistry 101 class in college.I find the book easy to read and explanations were thorough.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
my chem teacher uses the later editions of this book and the information is exactly the same so find out if you need this more expensive edition

3-0 out of 5 stars Over Simplified Material
I had to get this book for a class, and was surprised at how simple the book was for a college class.Well, the class is actually simpler than the book is.

I would recommend this book for a lower level high school class, never for a college class.

1-0 out of 5 stars unreliable sevice
Bad service, slow, unreliable communication, if at all, they make mistakes, then charge you for their mistakes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text
This book gives concise information with many illustrations to help understand the concepts of chemistry. The solutions manual that comes with the book gives answers to all of the odd-numbered questions that come from the end of each chapter. Some of the values in the solutions manual are not so straight-forward as to what they represent, but you can figure it out. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great teacher resource
My wife is a chemistry teacher and was in need of some new resources for activities. This book is the stuff, soon as she began flipping through it she said it was worth every penny and then some.Great resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource
I'm a practicing chemistry teacher and found this book a top-notch resource. I also have had the pleasure of taking classes from the author. Explanations are thorough and concise. Experiments are easily reproducible with explorative questions. It is also a good springboard to come up with your own labs. More than anything its the style with which the material is presented that drives the concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
I'm homeschooling my high school child and find this to be a great lab resource for our Chemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting and useful book
Very interesting and useful book for chemsitry teachers at high school and even at college. I recommend to put in practice all the strategies proposed by the authors. It really works !

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible resource
I am using this book as a reference while homeschooling my middle-school son.It is far and away the best book of science experiments and demonstrations at this level that I have encountered.Every possible chemistry topic at the middle and high school level is covered with multiple examples, all well -indexed and clearly explained. Many can be done with simple materials around the house although some require more sophisticated glassware and a few involve chemicals and/or procedures that would require an institutional setting (for example, needing a fume hood). The latter are well indicated. Best of all, the activities are FUN--we did the Cartesian Diver today and it was a blast!

My only very minor gripe is that a few activities are repeated several times in slightly different formats.More thorough editing and/or cross-referencing would be helpful.

I would recommend the book for homeschoolers such as myself who want to give their students real lab experiences, and also probably for "regular" teachers in middle or high schools. ... Read more
