Product Description
Basic Transport Phenomena in Biomedical Engineering, Second Edition fuses fundamental engineering and life science principles to uncover key concepts in biomedical engineering transport phenomena.Coverage begins with basic thermodynamic properties, body fluids, solute diffusion and transport, physical and flow properties of fluids and blood, tissue oxygen transport, and pharmacokinetics. These topics are updated to include new material on fluid mechanics, diffusion, and mass transfer in boundary layers.Building upon this foundation, the book describes the application of these principles to the development and design of drug delivery systems, artificial organs, bioartificial organs, and tissue engineering. Also new to this edition are an introductory chapter on units and dimensions, including tips for solving engineering problems and a discussion of material balances, and a chapter reviewing thermodynamic concepts with emphasis on solutions.

Considerable importance is placed on developing a quantitative understanding of the underlying physical, chemical, and biological phenomena. Mathematical models are developed from scratch using the conceptually simple "shell balance" or "compartmental" approaches to obtain the differential equations that describe a particular situation. Numerous examples throughout the book employ mathematical techniques and numerical methods.Where possible, the results obtained from them are compared with actual experimental data taken from the research literature.

Each chapter ends with problems designed to help students gain confidence in the development of mathematical models for a variety of problems of varying degrees of complexity.A brief discussion of these mathematical techniques and numerical methods are described in the book. These techniques and methods include similarity transforms, Laplace transforms, finding the root of a nonlinear equation, linear regression, nonlinear regression, and solving ordinary differential equations.

This updated edition is ideal for junior and senior undergraduates and first-year graduate students taking courses in biotransport phenomena.Students and professionals in bioengineering and biomedical engineering, as well as other disciplines, such as chemical and mechanical engineering, physiology, biophysics and cell biology will find this text a valuable resource.A solutions manual will be available to qualified instructors. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars As far as textbooks go, this was a decent one.
It was very readable, a major plus since my professor spoke little English. Overall, it was worth the cost of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great
The book came as they said it would, and in a very timely manner. No Complaints, just respect.

3-0 out of 5 stars Its just a bunch of equations
Ok, I understand that this is an engineering book and it is going to have plenty of equations and whatnot, but it really does a poor job of placing the equations in a tangible context.

I really respect how ambitious this book is in covering models for a variety of transport phenomena, but despite my more than solid foundation in biology, physics, chemistry, and math, I have to read each chapter 3 or 4 times to be able to finally fit the new material in with the big picture. This is really frustrating. The only reason why I gave this book 3 stars and not 2 is because I realize that this type of material is difficult to "write down."It just seems like there must be something out there that does a better job of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Biological Transport Concepts
I used this book for an introductory course in Physiological Transport Phenomena. The book is great in that the author covers most of the transport processes as they apply to biological systems and provide numerous references and useful physical property data. Its nice to see how traditional transport concepts can be applied to problems for a system which everyone of us is very familiar with, namely the human body. The only criticism is that the book does not cover heat transfer and its applications to physiological systems. Luckily my professor provided handouts and supplimental material to the lecture. One of the books he used was the fairly old text by Cooney, "Biomedical Engineering Principles: An introduction to Fluid, Heat and Mass Transport Processes". I think this book is out of print but seems to have great information contained in it as well.

This book is a definite must have for any biomedical engineering student and possibly even experienced people working in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must for Chemical Engineers
Biomedical Engineering requires chemical engineering principles in several areas. This book highlights on those in particular and is amust for chemical engineers who want to know what their challanges are going to be in such biomedical engineering research areas. This also is a primer for the subject, although from a chemical engineering point of view. Ideal for a Bioengineering/Biomedical Engineering course in any chemical/ environmetal engineering department. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Falling short comparing with Perry
I have been working i the chemical industry for 18 years. I have found 1 advantage for this book compared with "Perry's Chemicals ... handbook 6 edition", the price. I have benn reading some chapter very thoroughly, i was very dissapointed. Crystallisation, fluidisation, centrifugal separations. In every aspect Perry was better. I have breafly been reading and comparing some other chapters and the result is the same.
Coulson seems to me to be old, made by people that have not been out working in the factory the last 50 years. The text is also filled with information for filling the pages ( an american sicknes compared wit europe), to a higher degree. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Hardcover does not mean paperback
I paid $130 for this book that was described as a HARDCOVER, even in the title. However, when I received the book it the mail, it was in fact a paperback book.I was not pleased with this, but I had no other option but to keep it because I needed the book at the time.I attempted to review the book upon receipt, but I didn't have the option to on the website at that time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Listed as hardcover, but delivered as paperback
I had the same problem as A. Wariso:The textbook above is listed as hardcover, but the book that was delivered to me was a paperback.Look elsewhere if you want a hardcover copy of this text.

3-0 out of 5 stars good book in need of a good revision
A good book, with excellent didactic approach; but getting dated.
The book needs a good revision "asap". The kinetics revision (chap.1 a 4) is somewhat poor.
The reactive chemical systems (chap. 5, 6) are well approached; the liquid phase reaction (chap. 7) is a little too long.
The chapters about reactor are very good (chap. 8 to 11).
Hill's treatment of heterogeneous reator (chapter 12) is superb. Best among all reactor analysis books that I know.
However, chapter 13 and the appendices are useless.
The book requires new examples and better figures and tables, as well as, much better list of exercises. In general, new computational calculations (example, data sheets) must be included in the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Def Not a Beginner Book
I am a grad student and am retaking kinetics to review for qualifiers. The class I'm currently in uses the Hill book (this book).I have to admit I find it very lackluster. The writing style is more suited to an academic paper than an introductory text and the examples are often woefully incomplete.

I used Fogler for my undergrad course and find it a MUCH better book for introductory courses. The only place that Hill surpases Fogler is in that Hill spends more time on Kinetics by themselves while Fogler wraps Kinetics into reactor design.Still, the nature of the writing and poorly worked examples more or less negate whatever benefit this would entail.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed - False Advertizing
you advertised a hard cover book and thats what I thought I paid for but then they sent me a soft cover book. where is the honesty. I will think twice before making a purchase next time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good mix of information
When I went through my undergradate degree, this book was solid gold.If you had it, you were everyone's friend. The library only had one copy, so it became necessary to purchase my own copy. Its economic data, design heuristics and little notes make it a good companion for anyone in design.

I am running the tutorial classes for 3rd year design here at uni, some 5 years later while doing my PhD - and this book is still seminal.I'd highly recommend it to anyone in design. As for the person who posted complaints about its use of SI units... we are all going to have to adopt one uniform standard sooner or later.Remember the Mars probe? It's going to hurt a little at first, but swallow the bitter pill - it's for everyone's benefit.

Finally, now that Ii'm about to finish my PhD and head out into the workplace, I'm going to need a good book on design. This is an essential part of my personal library for that foray into private enteprise.

The only downfall - when you're in Australia, $US 80 translates to about $AUD 160.That's roughly 90 McDonald's Big Macs... quite a lot of dough.I'll probablly be sticking to my 1st Ed because of this.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good concept ruined by exclusive use of SI units.
The text appeared quite useful for practicing process engineers until one gets to the exclusive use of SI units. The author converted all of the useful information found in tables and graphs to the SI system, rendering the tables and graphs useless. Most process engineers working in the U.S. use U.S. Customary System units, mainly because the plants they work in are based on the same units of measurements.Myself, I do not want to waste my time converting from SI units to U.S. units when I need information for a design problem.I would not recommend this book for anyone, including students in engineering. ... The Chemical Engineer's Practical Guide to Contemporary Fluid Mechanics

Since most chemical processing applications are conducted either partially or totally in the fluid phase, chemical engineers need a strong understanding of fluid mechanics. Such knowledge is especially valuable for solving problems in the biochemical, chemical, energy, fermentation, materials, mining, petroleum, pharmaceuticals, polymer, and waste-processing industries.

Fluid Mechanics for Chemical Engineers, Second Edition, with Microfluidics and CFD, systematically introduces fluid mechanics from the perspective of the chemical engineer who must understand actual physical behavior and solve real-world problems. Building on a first edition that earned Choice Magazine's Outstanding Academic Title award, this edition has been thoroughly updated to reflect the field's latest advances.

This second edition contains extensive new coverage of both microfluidics and computational fluid dynamics, systematically demonstrating CFD through detailed examples using FlowLab and COMSOL Multiphysics. The chapter on turbulence has been extensively revised to address more complex and realistic challenges, including turbulent mixing and recirculating flows.

Part I offers a clear, succinct, easy-to-follow introduction to macroscopic fluid mechanics, including physical properties; hydrostatics; basic rate laws for mass, energy, and momentum; and the fundamental principles of flow through pumps, pipes, and other equipment. Part II turns to microscopic fluid mechanics, which covers

  • Differential equations of fluid mechanics
  • Viscous-flow problems, some including polymer processing
  • Laplace's equation, irrotational, and porous-media flows
  • Nearly unidirectional flows, from boundary layers to lubrication, calendering, and thin-film applications
  • Turbulent flows, showing how the k/ε method extends conventional mixing-length theory
  • Bubble motion, two-phase flow, and fluidization
  • Non-Newtonian fluids, including inelastic and viscoelastic fluids
  • Microfluidics and electrokinetic flow effects including electroosmosis, electrophoresis, streaming potentials, and electroosmotic switching
  • Computational fluid mechanics with FlowLab and COMSOL Multiphysics

Fluid Mechanics for Chemical Engineers, Second Edition, with Microfluidics and CFD, includes 83 completely worked practical examples, several of which involve FlowLab and COMSOL Multiphysics. There are also 330 end-of-chapter problems of varying complexity, including several from the University of Cambridge chemical engineering examinations. The author covers all the material needed for the fluid mechanics portion of the Professional Engineer's examination.

The author's Web site, www.engin.umich.edu/~fmche/, provides additional notes on individual chapters, problem-solving tips, errata, and more.

it took 26 days to delivered this book ... common other vendors sent books within 5 days.So your vendor must did something wrong on this shipmnent here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
It's a good book, except that there are not enough examples, so, you have to work through the material and figure out how to solve it on your own.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fluid Mechanics for Chemical Engineers
This is a simple basic book about fluidics. Not complex equations.
Not a heavy mathematics. Contain useful information about technology process with fluids - bubbles and two phase flow.
Published in 1998 has relatively old information about everything.
Positive side - has a small chapter (20 pages) about
MatLab PDE Toolbox for solving fluid mechanics problems.
No connections with COMSOL at all or any kind of simulation.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wilkes
This is the worst text book I have ever used. I used it for an independent study class and my professor agreed that the topics were not rigorously explained. In addition, frequent assumptions were made without explination and referals were made to "lecture notes," which is, of course, useless if you aren't taking this man's lecture.

5-0 out of 5 stars compatible with any classroom text
I think that this book is an indispensable guide for fluid mechanics. It is easy to understand and it lets you progress with your pace with its solved examples. And one can excel in fluid mechanics by solving the suggesred problems of the book. This book not only helps you to understand the concept mathematically but gives the physical meanings of the problems. ... Read more

Product Description
Principles of Chemical Reactor Analysis and Design presents a new fundamental approach and methodology that overcome the deficiencies of the current method of teaching chemical reactor design. It provides engineering students and practitioners with the tools needed to handle contemporary industrial reactor operations, new design capabilities, and the framework for new economic-based optimization.
Features include:

- Reactor operations are described by dimensionless variables (in most cases, between -1 and 1) and dimensionless design equations.
- The design is formulated in terms of the smallest number of design equations and the least number of terms in each equation; hence, the most robust formulation.
Solutions of the design equations provide dimensionless operating curves (a new concept in CRE). These curves provide complete information on the progress of the chemical reactions, the formation (or depletion) of all individual species, and changes in temperature. Reactor sizing represents a "point" on these curves (similar to the way a "point" on dimensionless friction factor versus Reynolds number charts is used).
- Discusses new design capabilities for reactor configurations. ... Read more
