3-0 out of 5 stars Decent book, there could be better ones
This book explains the basics of thermodynamics very well. However, when it comes to conceptual things like fugacity and bubble point, i feel that the book does a poor job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics (The Mcgraw-Hill Chemical Engineering Series)
It is a great condition book, however, it was shipped very slowly, and I didn't receive it until 2 weeks after the purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Carlos's Review
This edition of the Introduction to Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics is much more friendly version to the reader than former ones. It also has more industry related problems. Another change with respect to the former ones is that The example problems are exposed and solved in the SI system of units, which is a more globally used system than the English one.

It is a classic book for chemical engineers and a must read book either as a main textbook or as an alternate textbook, for anyone planning to do undergraduate or graduate thermodynamic courses in that discipline.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good for a book you grow to hate
As far as text books go, this one is not bad. It's decently well written and put together. There are a lot of graphs and diagrams to explain the material. There are not as many example problems as there need to be, but the questions at the end of the chapter are very straightforward. Not a very extensive reference section either. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars remarkable service
I found the book in excellent form, brand new as I have ordered, and as regard to services, oh my God!! great service with no waste of time, the item came since before the due time!!!! thanks for your services

5-0 out of 5 stars Good source of ChE problems!
From the perspective of a ChE instructor, I found this textbook a very good source of homework and mid terms problems. If you are teaching a numerical method course or one where modeling and simulation is the focus, this is a textbook for your personal library. The problems range from linear, non-linear equations, ODE to PDE equations that can be solve using the "method of lines". You can find a nice range of topics, including bioreactors, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, chemical reactions, process control, etc. Partial solutions are given to most of them. From the book's Web Site you can download many solved problem files in MATLAB, EXCEL AND POLYMATH; unfortunately, students also can download them. The Appendix includes a nice classification of all the problems, according to their application area (thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, mass transfer, etc.).

If you are hoping to learn programming, in particular MATLAB, this is not the textbook. MATLAB is used in almost all the chapters; unfortunately, the "method of lines" solutions are in POLYMATH.

Last, but not least; the price of the textbook is just perfect ($47) considering all the time you can save with this source of solved problems. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Straight Forward Fluid Mechanics
I have read the other reviews of this book and it is obvious there are conflicting feelings about the material contained in this book.I personally feel this book is a good quality and very useful to a practicingengineer. The book is sometimes a little unclear as to where some of theequations come from or how to read a diagram.I had the privledge oftaking this class at Texas A&M from Dr. Ron Darby (the author).Histeaching styles are 'old school' but very effective. He and his book makethe student THINK about what the answer is.Having taken the class fromDr. Darby, I know clearly where all its equations come from and everythingprinted in the book is accurate.Dr. Ron Darby is an extremely competentindividual and any reader who doesn't understand the book is probablylooking for someone to give them the answer rather than think forthemselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text and reference book for engineers.
The course taught from this book was the most useful course I have taken. The book covers a wide range of topics including Newtonian andnon-Newtonian fluids and gases, pipes and fittings, pumps and compressors, meters and control valves, filters, centrifuges, settlers, etc.The bookis clearly written and emphasizes the solution of practical fluids problemsstarting from first principles. There are many challenging problems whichdeal with "real world" situations - not the idealized orhypothetical problems you see in a lot of books.I use this book more onthe job than any of the books that I had for courses in school. There werea few typos in the first printing, but these have been corrected in thelater printings.I highly recommend the book for both students andpractising engineers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly presented, poorly formatted, full of errors.
I used the book for my introductory fluid mechanincs class, and my peers unanimously agreed that this book was the worst book they had ever used for a class. Equations come from nowhere, and practice problems appear beforeany discussion of material needed to solve them. There are no colordiagrams, and the B&W ones that are there are are crude and confusing. The book is full of typographical errors. According to my professor for theclass, although he didn't like this book either, it was better than theothers available in this subject.I shudder to think that a book could beless useful than this one. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to Chemical Engineering Computing
The book covers the various computational tools required by students and chemical engineers and gives a broad spectrum of chemical engineering subjects with the exception of process control. It would be nice to see more examples with Excel spreadsheet and Matlab in the revised edition. As an introductory text in Chemical engineering computing, I think FEMLAB should be excluded, and perhaps more emphasis on HYSYS or ASPEN process simulator. In all, Professor Finlayson has done a remarkable job in introducing his lectures at the University of Washington to the readers.

Product Description
This book deals with various unique elements in the drug development process within chemical engineering science and pharmaceutical R&D. The book is intended to be used as a professional reference and potentially as a text book reference in pharmaceutical engineering and pharmaceutical sciences. Many of the experimental methods related to pharmaceutical process development are learned on the job. This book is intended to provide many of those important concepts that R&D Engineers and manufacturing Engineers should know and be familiar if they are going to be successful in the Pharmaceutical Industry. These include basic analytics for quantitation of reaction components– often skipped in ChE Reaction Engineering and kinetics books. In addition Chemical Engineering in the Pharmaceutical Industry introduces contemporary methods of data analysis for kinetic modeling and extends these concepts into Quality by Design strategies for regulatory filings. For the current professionals, in-silico process modeling tools that streamline experimental screening approaches is also new and presented here. Continuous flow processing, although mainstream for ChE, is unique in this context given the range of scales and the complex economics associated with transforming existing batch-plant capacity.

The book will be split into four distinct yet related parts. These parts will address the fundamentals of analytical techniques for engineers, thermodynamic modeling, and finally provides an appendix with common engineering tools and examples of their applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a math text for ChemE's!
This is an excellent and focused book for graduate ChemE's.Lots of the problems are the types you would see in graduate transport and controls courses.Everything is written with ChemE problems in mind. It's not like other textbooks, like Kreyzig's, that simply put out a bunch of generic problems to solve; still, Kreyzig's textbook is an engineering math classic, and you should have it on-hand in case you need some extra explanations. It is certainly better than the text of Varma and Morbidelli, which tends to move off-topic quickly and answer several unnecessary problems.

This text by Rice and Do is the best I've seen, but it is really hard to get a hold of.Good luck getting it, as it is certainly a good investment.

Product Description

This survey presents the theoretical methods of chemical engineering for modeling and simulation of industrial processes. On this base it is possible to formulate correct experimental conditions and to understand rightly the experimental results. The book uses the mechanics of continuous media approach for modeling of the simple processes as hydrodynamic processes, mass and heat transfer processes. The theory of the scalar, vector and tensor fields permit to create the basic equations and boundary conditions. The problems of rheology, turbulence, turbulent diffusion and turbulent mass transfer are examined too.

The book incorporates a lot of fundamental knowledge, but it is assumed that the readers are familiar with the mathematics at engineering level and that they thought some special topics in usual university courses. It includes examples at the end of all chapters using the author’s investigations. Therefore, it is highly valuable for scientists as well as graduate and PhD students.

4-0 out of 5 stars PE exam success
what can i say, these books helped me ace the test. recommend to anyone who has to take the exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very straight forward manual, problems could be better
I am currently using this book to review for the PE exam. The main chapter material is wonderful and very straight forward. I wish I had this book when I was in school.Several reference tables and figures are great for making quick work of routine problems and problems a young engineer like myself normally solves with a computer. The main downside is the end of chapter problems. If you're reviewing for the PE, you MUST buy the solutions manual to make the questions worth while. Some of the problems aren't stated clearly and you'll need the manual to clarify what is being asked for.It is common for problems to use ambigous units such as psi (instead of psia or psig) and unit in terms of other variables (per cubic foot of bed, or per pound formula weight). When you do get the solutions manual, the problems are solved without units. This is difficult on problems with mixed english/SI units (but a good review).Dispite the difficulty with the problems, this is the best of the review manual in my opinion and I wouldn't want to go into the exam without it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Virtually the only resource I used
I found this book to be extremely helpful both in preparation for and in taking the Chemical Engineering PE examination. While the practice problems are a good review, I thought they tended be more difficult than the actual test.Additionally, the book covers all the high points that are on the exam. The layout is excellent and with a little familiarity (and some page tabs) I was able to find every reference I needed in very little time during the test.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is solely intended for PE exam review.
I wrote this book soley as a study guide for preparing for theprofessional engineerng exam in chemical engineering. When I teach thecourse for this subject, I tell my students that the only way to learn howto prepare for the exam is to do the problems. This book is not intendedto be the "single sourcebook" for the exam.Instead, as you dothe problems, you will determine what other standard books YOU will need. I am aware that Engineering Economics is now not part of the PE exam, but Ikeep it in the book because there still have been questions on the examthat have some aspects of econcomics in them.I rate this 5 stars not onlybecause I wrote it but I have seen how it gives confidence to thosepreparng for the exam in my classes.I have all but finished the nextedition-expanding to 42 chapters from 19- but its publication is still indoubt with the same publisher at this time. The few remaining chapters willbe finished after completing my PhD in 1999. We'll see what happens then.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good only for the sample problems
This is not a good book to learn chemical engineering from, nor is it particularly good as a review of engineering for the practicing engineer. If you are planning to take the Professional Engineering examination in chemical engineering and you have good chemical engineering books from your college days, I would encourage you to use the old books to review the fundamentals.

Where this book comes in useful is in the many problems it gives at the end of each chapter.I found working these problems to be the best preparation for the exam.If you buy this book, I would suggest you to also buy the solutions manual for the problems. This manual is also available from Amazon. ... Product Description
This book presents the current carbonaceous fuel conversion technologies based on chemical looping concepts in the context of traditional or conventional technologies. The key features of the chemical looping processes, their ability to generate a sequestration-ready CO2 stream, are thoroughly discussed. Chapter 2 is devoted entirely to the performance of particles in chemical looping technology and covers the subjects of solid particle design, synthesis, properties, and reactive characteristics. The looping processes can be applied for combustion and/or gasification of carbon-based material such as coal, natural gas, petroleum coke, and biomass directly or indirectly for steam, syngas, hydrogen, chemicals, electricity, and liquid fuels production. Details of the energy conversion efficiency and the economics of these looping processes for combustion and gasification applications in contrast to those of the conventional processes are given in Chapters 3, 4, and 5.Finally, Chapter 6 presents additional chemical looping applications that are potentially beneficial, including those  for H2 storage and onboard H2 production, CO2 capture in combustion flue gas, power generation using fuel cell, steam-methane reforming, tar sand digestion, and chemicals and  liquid fuel production.

A CD is appended to this book that contains the chemical looping simulation files and the simulation results based on the ASPEN Plus software for such reactors as gasifier, reducer, oxidizer and combustor, and for such processes as conventional gasification processes, Syngas Chemical Looping Process, Calcium Looping Process, and Carbonation-Calcination Reaction (CCR) Process.

Product Description
Designed for the non-expert student, enthusiast, or researcher, this text provides an accessible introduction to numerical computation and its applications in science and engineering. It assumes no prior knowledge beyond undergraduate calculus and elementary computer programming. Fundamental and practical issues are discussed in a unified manner with a generous, but not excessive, dose of numerical analysis. Topics are introduced on a need to know basis to concisely illustrate the practical implementation of a variety of algorithms and demystify seemingly esoteric numerical methods. Algorithms that can be explained without too much elaboration and can be implemented within a few dozen lines of computer code are discussed in detail, and computer programs in Fortran, C++, and Matlab are provided. Algorithms whose underlying theories require long, elaborate explanations are discussed at the level of first principles, and references for further information are given. The book uses numerous schematic illustrations to demonstrate concepts and facilitate their understanding by providing readers with a helpful interplay between ideas and visual images. Real-world examples drawn from various branches of science and engineering are presented. Updated information on computer technology and numerical methods is included, many new and some original topics are introduced. Additional solved and unsolved problems are included. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a useful reference
I used this reference recently to help me with a research project and found the organization of the sections on numerical solutions to differential equations to be very helpful. The book is very well organized, and presented the material in a suggestive way, so that I was able to use it in developing some ideas concerning the theoretical aspects of computation.I think that any reference which leads one to develop new theoretical insights must be recommended, but it appears also to be very well organized for ordinary practical purposes as well.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book on numerical methods
This is an extremely useful and well-written book. It is perfectly organized and very well structured. The level is just right; not too simple and not too tough. The software is a big bonus. Everything I have needed on numerics I have found in this book. Highly recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
Chemical Engineering Volume 2 covers the properties of particulate systems, including the character of individual particles and their behaviour in fluids.Sedimentation of particles, both singly and at high concentrations, flow in packed and fluidised beads and filtration are then examined.

The latter part of the book deals with separation processes, such as distillation and gas absorption, which illustrate applications of the fundamental principles of mass transfer introduced in Chemical Engineering Volume 1. In conclusion, several techniques of growing importance - adsorption, ion exchange, chromatographic and membrane separations, and process intensification - are described.

* A logical progression of chemical engineering concepts, volume 2 builds on fundamental principles contained in Chemical Engineering volume 1 and these volumes are fully cross-referenced
* Reflects the growth in complexity and stature of chemical engineering over the last few years
* Supported with further reading at the end of each chapter and graded problems at the end of the book ... Read more
