5-0 out of 5 stars a fantastic how-to for beginners and experts alike
Mastandrea's sharp eye for color is matched by her ability to articulate in step-by-step format the techniques for beautiful ceramic pieces. Techniques include how to do sponge painting, plaids, stamp painting, which brushes to use for which effects--enough information for someone who's never painted ceramics before but not so much that an experienced painter might find condescending. The projects included in the book are cheery, bright, and motivational. I highly recommend this book for any painter who has recently discovered paint-your-own ceramics studios but doesn't know where or how to start. ... Read more

Product Description
Japanese American artist Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) is renowned for his stone and bronze sculpture, his gardenlike installations in public spaces, and his furniture designs. Far less familiar, but no less important, is Noguchi's work in clay, which he executed in three intensive sessions in 1931, 1950, and 1952, all during visits to Japan. The pieces included in this elegant volume and the accompanying exhibition comprise the first major museum presentation of Isamu Noguchi's ceramics and the introduction of the work of major postwar Japanese ceramic artists with whom Noguchi collaborated or interacted. Supported by four linked essays and opulently illustrated in full color and black and white, Isamu Noguchi and Modern Japanese Ceramics highlights the sculptor's struggles with cultural identity and his experimentation with the conflicts between modernity and tradition.

Noguchi's sculptures in the medium of clay reveal informal, spontaneous, and humorous aspects not visible in less flexible media such as bronze or stone. Through clay, Noguchi probed unresolved personal issues surrounding his ambiguous cultural identity as the son of a Japanese father and American mother. Because Noguchi made his ceramics in Japan, his work also creates links to a diversity of approaches within the ceramic world of Japan. These range from traditionalists such as Kitaoji Rosanjin and the Living National Treasure designates, to primitivists exemplified by Okamoto Taro and Tsuji Shindo, to avant-garde experimentalists led by the Sodeisha group. An understanding of the nature and scope of the concerns Noguchi expressed through clay is crucial to understanding his work as a whole, and consideration of Japanese ceramic artists in the 1950s reveals a largely unknown genre of modern Japanese art.

Product Description
A worldwide survey of innovative work, ranging from makers of functional ceramic objects such as teapots and tableware to those who explore the possibilities of clay as an artistic medium.Over the last decade the narrowing of the gulf that traditionally existed between the realms of fine art and craft has resulted in a shift in perception of what ceramics can be and can mean. All areas of ceramic practice have been revitalized as a result—the creative possibilities that artists, lured by the plastic and tactile qualities of clay, have brought with them into ceramics have influenced ceramists of all backgrounds.

Analyzing work from the last ten years, this book covers every aspect of contemporary ceramic practice and includes work of all sizes—from a few inches to large-scale installations. It is organized
into five main chapters:

  • Beyond Utility: original yet functional ceramics
  • Defining Space: wheel-thrown shapes, slip-cast forms, and hand-built structures
  • Mind the Gap: sculptural work from precise and mechanical to freely modeled forms
  • A Sense of Space: installations, both site-specific and environmental
  • The Line of Beauty: collaborations between art and industry that result from advances in technology
Contemporary Ceramics also includes biographies of the featured ceramists and a directory of museums and galleries. 611 color illustrations ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars diverse and exciting
This book offers a wide-ranging look at contemporary ceramic art, with emphasis on the 'art'. Not a book on pottery, though vessel forms are included. Rather, it gives a broad survey of contemporary art executed in clay. The format offers a few images per page with a brief discussion of each piece, all organized by general themes and approaches. The sheer range of styles and ideas is a treat, from ironic post-modern appropriations to meticulously crafted objects of beauty, and from political activism to personal introspection to pure aesthetics: in short, the full range of what's happening in art as currently manifested in clay. Cooper discusses technique when relevant, but this is not a how-to guide. He also deals with content and context where it is foregrounded, but it is not an art-history text. The many illustrations (small) and descriptions (short) make this a sampler of goodies, rather than an in-depth treatment, but well worth the nibble.

I first encountered it when it when it was purchased by the library of the college where I teach ceramics, and I kept it checked out for quite a while, as every student who saw it seemed to come away with new interest and expanded sense of possibilities. I missed it after it was returned, and finally purchased my own copy (not something I do often).

Many books on current ceramics are of relevance only to those already interested in clay, and focus on objects that are of interest mainly to clay buffs. This book, however, is likely to be worthwhile to anyone following current sculpture in any medium, while offering new and exciting works even to those well-versed in contemporary ceramic art.

4-0 out of 5 stars Confused focus, but good designs & technique descriptions
I'm not sure who this book is geared toward, since it provides instructionon some very basic pottery techniques, together with some step-by-stepproject ideas. However, the way it's worded, it implies that the reader hasany variety of equipment, clays and glazes available, and is able to settheir own kiln temperatures, and so on. (Which, of course, is only the casefor professional potters working in their own studios).

That littleblunderous fact aside, this is a pretty good book. It is formatted suchthat each page is cut in half horizontally, with the top half of the bookgiving step-by-step project walkthroughs, and the bottom half providingvisual instruction on the techniques used in the projects. The plethora ofpictures help a lot, and some of the project ideas are really great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Layout!
I got this book when I was taking a beginning pottery class.I found it to be extremely informative, inspiring and easy to use by the way it was organized. The top half of the book is organized by project and the bottomhalf of the book is organized by technique.Since I was just starting out,I had A LOT of technique to learn. My hands were already full; so itreally helped to not be flipping back and forth so much. 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Beginners
The emphasis of this book is surface decoration techniques in general. Most of the ceramics techniques in this book you will already know something about if you have had a good ceramics class. If the topics listed are new to you, then this book is a great introduction. If you've already been exposed to them, then this book does not take you farther.

There is not a lot of specific low-temperature information, other than a few recipes (which can be quite useful). In particular, I was hoping for a book that would help me approach the effects of high temperature glazes when working with a low temperature kiln, how to modify a high temperature glaze recipe to be suitable for lower temperature work, how to do glaze calculations, etc.

For an introductory book, it is very good, with good photos, etc.I'm giving it 3 stars simply because it is only introductory.

There are more thorough treatements of surface decoration in ceramics, like Hopper's _Making Marks_.And there are better coverages of ceramics in general that include this surface decoration information, such as Peterson's _Craft & Art of Clay_, which is much larger, but can (at this writing) be purchased inexpensively from discounted booksellers listed through the Amazon page.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE this beautiful and informative book.
I would love to take one of her college courses because Lynn Peters presents material clearly, concisely, and makes it seem like fun! The photographs are beautiful and very inspiring. The first time through I just looked at the pictures and captions. The second time through I read the lessons with pictures step-by-step. Third time, I read every word, and I know I'll refer to it again and again. I appreciated her simple, straightforward style of writing, and how she didn't bog down on details that don't make a lot of difference. If she wrote about it, it is useful info.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best resource for learning low-fire clay decoration
This is absolutely the best resource for learning low-fire clay decoration. The book is in full-color & is packed beautiful example pieces. The author covers everything you need to know in an easy tounderstand manner. Surface decoration techniques include slips, terrasigillata, underglazes, glazes, maiolica, china paints, decals, &lusters. Formulas for some of these are included by volume &percentage. Seven step-by-step projects that demonstrate use of slips, sgraffito, cutouts, decals, underglazes & maiolica help you to applywhat you have learned. A glossary, cone-firing range chart, & resourcelist are a great bonus. Numerous examples of each style are given inindividual galleries throughout the book.I found them all an inspiration.Captions for each piece give information on the artist, clay type, technique & cone.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is incredible!
Where did Lynn Peters come from, and why is this the first I have heard of her? Wow! I have been looking for this book all my career! My students next semester and every semester after that will read this book. Everything Iwas never exactly sure about is in this book, from maiolica to conetemperatures, and all points in between. All of us ceramics instructors owea giant hug of thanks to Ms. Peters.

5-0 out of 5 stars A high-fired endorsement of this low-fire instructional.
As a ceramics instructor at a small art school, I am constantly searching for a suitable text for my students, even going so far as to consider authoring one myself! Fortunately, the world has been spared my awkwarddiction, and has been blessed with this wonderful instructional text byLynn Peters. I have been an admirer of Peters' work for some time now, andwas delighted to see that she had documented her pursuits. The anecdotaltheme of the text even had me reading for its literary quality alone! Thephotos are wonderful, and provide fantastic insight into the actual processof creating ceramic art. I highly recommend this tome to all instructorsand students, and will continue to do so until Peters blesses us with mydesired sequel! Kudos! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Loved It, is an understatement.
Dr. Patricia A. Turners book "Ceramic Uncles & Celluloid Mammies....", was the first book of race theory I read after a 3 yearpost grad school hiatus (I was race theory exhausted to say the least).I have studied race theory for years, but Dr. Turner's voice was so refreshingly feminine, strong, and accessible. I didn't want to put it down, because of how much my work as an artist was in sync with the words in her book. The very reason the above reviewer was repelled by the book is the same reason I loved it.Removing the black figure and placing it an alien being (no pun intended) such as a Gremlin or Audrey II (Little Shop of Horrors) to take racism and stereotypes to whole other unapologetic level was brilliant...and I couldn't agree more. Listen to the voice, hello!
I have recommended this book to students on countless occasions or artists' working in themes that Dr. Turner employs in her well thought out book.
If you are interested in race and it's influence on popular culture, get on it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Is she serious?
While there are some valid points made in this book, the one thing that completely destroyed any validity it might have had was the author equating "Gremlins" to racist propaganda.

Credibility can only be stretched so far. ... Read more

"It is rare to find a book on art that presents complex aesthetic principles in clear readable form. Ceramics, by Philip Rawson, is such a book. I discovered it ten years ago, and today my well-worn copy has scarcely a page on which some statement is not underlined and starred."—Wayne Higby, from the Foreword

4-0 out of 5 stars ceramics book
The book itself is informative but not all that captivating.Other than that the item was brand new and arrived in fabulous condition in a short amount of time.I was very happy with the sender.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Ceramics with Philip Rawson
This book is not a glossy full-color presentation of the world's spectacular ceramic pieces. It does contain a hundred or so black and white illustrations of ceramics from almost all cultures; ancient and modern. Philip Rawson writes about the general concept of ceramics, the techniques, and the philosophy and symbolism.I found this book to be very helpful in that it gives an overview of all types of ceramics and allows the interested potter or sculptor to survey Rawson's intriguing perceptions. This book promotes ideas and facilitates their coming to the reader through discussions of his seemingly infinite observations.Rawson was a brilliant art professor and brings amazing viewpoints to his readers.Ideas, after all, are the most important factor in creating works of art.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Will Want To Own This Book
Every potter and vessel maker, every student and teacher of ceramics, every person interested in ceramics should read CERAMICS by Philip Rawson. In fact, you will want to own a copy of this book so you can re-read it and loan it to other people. (I received no compensation for that statement.)CERAMICS is an exceptional source for expanding your knowledge of and vocabulary for critically viewing, appreciating, discussing, and writing about ceramics.

In CERAMICS, Philip Rawson, a prolific writer and art critic, gives a fascinating and lucid examination of the evolution and aesthetics of ceramic form.He states,"One of the prime reasons why ceramics is such an interesting art is that it fills the gap which now yawns between art and life as most people understand their relationship."(6) Rawson then introduces ideas critical to looking at and fully understanding ceramics such as the relationship of function to the origins of most ceramic forms and how that relationship affects our experience of ceramic objects. He also addresses the inherent attraction of a recognizable material transformed by the human hand into a new object with symbolic or metaphorical value.

Following a comprehensive but concise overview of the techniques and processes involved in making ceramics, Rawson gives an in-depth discussion of how form, surface and design, combined with the ideas of transformation and forms' residual relationships to function, create meaning in pottery.Well-chosen photographs, illustrations, and vessel profiles accompany the text. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars History of Deruta Pottery
I puchased this book for my wife who brought home some pottery when she was in Umbria. I was hoping for a book that had a lot of pictures of the different kinds of Deruta pottery. This book was a history of the pottery from 1200-present. Although it was not what I thought, it was still very informative and enjoyable. I would recommend to anyone who wants to find out the history of this beautiful Italian pottery

5-0 out of 5 stars Bellisimo!
This is a beautiful book! I highly recommend it to anyone enchanted by Italian majolica and interested in it's history. After I read it, I thought I'd leave it on my coffee table for easy reference...but so many people at work have asked to borrow it! Even as I rode the train to work with the book in my lap, people next to me couldn't resist staring at the pictures and commenting on its beauty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful beginners and teachers guide
This is an excellent guide for a beginning potter, or in my case , a high school instructor with beginning ceramic students. It has terrific photos and simple explanations .
It has a great glossary of vocabulary words.Very clear and helpful suggestions and tips.

5-0 out of 5 stars Potters Handbook
Good smooth transaction.Item arrived in a timely matter and as described. Thanks, just what I was looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy and helpful
While setting up a ceramics program in a 55+ active adult community, I needed a quick helpful guide with lots of guidance. I tried this book and it has been indeed helpful with lots of information on clay types, stages, firing processes, glazing, handbuilding and throwing on the wheel. It is filled with good material, directions and pictures. My students liked it so much that some even purchased it for themselves.I had taught ceramics in the public schools for decades, and this did a great job of summarizing what I had taught over a semester in a thorough and quick, easy-to-use format.

2-0 out of 5 stars a frustrating disappointment...
I am an intermediate potter looking for new ideas, techiniques, and sources of inspiration. I expected this book to include more projects. The first 130 pages included light coverage of basic information that is available in dozens of other books. There are only fifty pages devoted to specific projects and they were uninspiring and frustrating. I was initially excited by the opening picture of a vase with clay applique. However, there were no instructions for that project... The instructions for the chip and dip dish was one page conisisting of mostly photographs and very little instruction. It gave you no indication as to how to properly join the dip bowl to the larger bowl. Do you score and slip the bottom? Also, how do you trim the bottom of the larger bowl once you have already attached the small bowl? A more experienced potter may already have these solutions. They should have been included in the instructions for this piece.
As an intermediate potter, I found this book frustrating. For the beginning potter, there are better books out there....

4-0 out of 5 stars potter's book
This book it is very helpfull for a beginer and also I think for people that practice pottery more than a hobby. It has very good pictures and the experience of the author seems to give a complex image for the entire big lesson for pottery. ... Read more
