2-0 out of 5 stars hmm....confused
I'm not a math whiz & to be able to build these houses. I said never mind & put the book down. There has to be something simpler.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading cover photo
If you are interested in learning more about the beautiful structure pictured on the cover of this book, don't bother buying this book. The book provides no additional photos and only two pages of text that covers this structure at a high level - and no similar structures are covered either. Obviously these two pages were tacked on in one of the recent editions. I feel cheated.

Buy the much better "Earthbag Building: The Tools, Tricks and Techniques (Natural Building Series)" by Hunter and Kiffmeyer instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure Inspiration
It's important to understand that what is truly new and fresh can't be responsibly reduced to a cookbook.Building a house is a major undertaking, and different parts of the earth have different climates, different needs, and different earth underfoot to build from.

Khalili inspires his readers to think more openly, he urges experimentation while sharing what is known. His buildings are gorgeous, with an openness and simplicity that inspires us to question the standard boxes most of us live in.

Also inspirational is his obvious deep humanity; his love for both building AND people has enabled him to leave the usual paths and use the best qualities of the old, while infusing it with modern understanding to create wonderful new, achievable designs.I am awed.I've read this book twice, I'm building the models he recommends so I can more fully understand the structures of arch and domes, and hope to take his workshop next summer.

This is life affirming as well as life-changing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book by a great architect
This is a great book. I haven't read it page for page yet, but in it goes with my favourites. It concentrates on Khalili's monolithic fired ceramic houses and has a lot of detail. It leaves no stones unturned if you want a building of this type.

Sadly, the book was published before Khalili invented Superadobe or Earth Bag building. For a good book on Earthbag, I recommend "Earthbag Building: The Tools, Tricks and Techniques"
by Kaki Hunter. Another book - which is more general is "Alternative Construction; Contemporary Natural Building Methods" by Lynne Elisabeth and Cassandra Adams.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Most Comprehensive ceramics textbook
I took a ceramics class and found that the text we were using (fundamentals of ceramics, barrsoum) was missing a lot of processing and application info. This text covers every aspect of ceramic science and engineering you could think of and for the price its a must.
The only thing that through me off was the format it is written in, 2 columns per page with awkward boxes in the middle.

Product Description
Southwestern ceramics have always been admired for their variety and aesthetic beauty. Although ceramics are most often used for placing the peoples who produced them in time, they can also provide important clues to past economic organization. This volume covers nearly 1000 years of southwestern prehistory and history, focusing on ceramic production in a number of environmental and economic contexts. It brings together the best of current research to illustrate the variation in the organization of production evident in this single geographic area. The contributors use diverse research methods in their studies of vessel form and decoration. All support the conclusion that the specialized production of ceramics for exchange beyond the household was widespread. The first seven chapters focus on ceramic production in specific regions, followed by three essays that re-examine basic concepts and offer new perspectives. Because previous studies of southwestern ceramics have focused more on distribution than production, Ceramic Production in the American Southwest fills a long-felt need for scholars in that region and offers a broad-based perspective unique in the literature. The Southwest lacked high levels of sociopolitical complexity and economic differentiation, making this volume of special interest to scholars working in similar contexts and to those interested in craft production. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Hip New Thing in Old Pots
I recently had a conversation with a vetern professor of archaeology. He's a brilliant wealth of information, and he doesn't use the word "hip" too often. So when he described this book as "The 'hip' new thing in archaeology," I was a bit taken back. He turnedover a copy, and I fell in love with it that night. Using his word, I'mgoing to continue to decribe this book as "hip," - here's why. Ittakes the format of a compilation of articles written by some of theleading professionals in the field. By formatting it in this way, theeditors have provided a concise and detailed overview of new technologiesthat have helped archaeologists understand prehistoric behavior in thesouthwest. It is an absolutely necessary piece of literature, as it couldbe considered the jumping-off point for those interested in usinghigh-technology to study ceramics.I would recomend the book to anyone whois interested in the science of archaeology and indian pottery. But if youdecide to read it, don't expect an "Indiana Jones" type theme. Itis very technical, and it is highly doubtful that the authors and editorshad a popular audience in mind when they wrote it. But if you think you cantake a heavy dose of science, thenopen wide and read it. ... Read more

Product Description
Crystalline glazes have a magical quality that appeals to many ceramicists. Unfortunately, producing these glazes can be technically difficult.

Diane Creber tackles the problems involved in using this challenging medium. She describes the clays and kilns most suitable, explains how to glaze, provides glaze recipes, and discusses how to fire in both oxidation and reduction conditions. She also briefly sketches the history of crystalline glazes.

A useful guide to this exciting subject, Crystalline Glazes is perfect for both the student and the practiced potter experimenting with this technique. The second edition includes a new chapter, profiling the work of 14 potters from around the globe. These artists discuss their approaches, techniques, and recipes for achieving successful crystalline glazes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Accurate...
Well, for me, this book has shared a lot of useful information and tips on how to come up with ones own crystalline base glaze. Then, it explains how to achieve different crystal/background colors by experimenting with different oxides, along with nice, consistent firing schedules that I have tried and have gotten great results from. One must understand that a glaze recipe might be good in one area, but does not always work out in another area. So far, my results are pretty on point with what is shown in the book, and I found that really astounding. I give this book 5/5, and having it is a must whether your a rookie or experienced with crystalline glazes.

3-0 out of 5 stars better than last, but still lacking
I thought the organization of this book is still messed up.Some useful things, but skimpy on real how-to info and not my first recommendation.

3-0 out of 5 stars good information if you're firing cone 10
Almost all of the glaze recipes and firing schedules designed for very high-fire kilns (cone 10 and above).More information on achieving the intended effects at stoneware temperatures (cone 5-7) would have been more useful to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!Material is hard to hard on Crystalline Glazes...
this is the most comprehensive book I've found. It has firing techniques, lots of glaze information and the technical information you need without it being overwhelming.

4-0 out of 5 stars Diane Creber "Crystalline Glazes"
This is a well written book dealing with crystalline glazes. If you have tried to find material on crystalline glazes you will realize how scarce it is.I have tried four of her glaze formulas and followed her instructionon firing.

Results:Two terrific glazes, one very nice glaze, and onewhich remained underdeveloped. ... Read more

Product Description

Nine master ceramic artists present their personal approaches to sculpting the human figure in a spectacular volume that's both technically illuminating and visually inspirational. The outstanding examples range from representational to abstract, diminutive to heroic. Nan Smith uses a range of mold-making techniques and precise slab construction, while Akio Takamori coil-builds a simplified figure inspired by a Velásquez painting and Christyl Boger creates a lavishly decorated, classically formal figurine. Each featured sculptor discusses the unique attractions and challenges of his or her method, and a series of detailed color photographs follows the artwork as it takes shape. In addition, there's a gallery of contemporary pieces selected by the major contributors. Glen R. Brown, a noted writer on ceramics, provides an insightful, thought-provoking introduction.

5-0 out of 5 stars very instructive
This book is very unusual in its detailed how-it's-done photos and explanations. It is extremely helpful to the student ceramist.I will refer to this book again and again.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good "how to" book
This book follows several artists and shows with good photos step by step through the process of making their style of figures.Of course they make it look easy and the level of skill required to make something similar is high but it does give you a good insight into the processes. Also shows photos of other artists works for inspiration.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fly on the wall in a master sculptor's studio
This book was on my wish list and it was selected by my brother and his wife for a birthday gift. When I looked through the great illustrations, I was so very pleased with the detail and content of the techniques that were covered. I am a potter who is going more toward sculpture every day, and I know this book is going to be one of my favorite resources.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Guide
As a newcomer to clay sculpture, I found the nine projects used to demonstrate technique well beyond my ambitions. The simple step by step dscriptions and generally excellent illustrations however, were highly informative and relevant to anyone interested in this field. Each sculptor is introduced by their own account of their approach to their work. I found this only marginally useful although it will interest some.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than Pretty Pictures
So many sculpture books show you only the final results. At best, you read the author or sculptor waxing poetic about the process, but this book shows step by step how large complicated pieces are produced. Is there an armature in there? Is it slab-built or solid and hollowed-out?Is that paint or glaze? This book tells you all that stuff. My only complaint is that it could be a little better organized. The editor also seemed really drawn to extremely dark artists, but it's not terribly distracting.Overall, beautiful book with a wealth of information. ... Product Description

Those who associate ceramics with functional vessels or charming knick-knacks are in for a shock. Clay may start out soft, but in the right hands it can deliver a hard blow. From British Toby Jugs to Marcel Duchamp's Fountain to a wall of gruesome tiles that forms a portrait of President George W. Bush, ceramic art has the power to provoke and subvert.

Confrontational Ceramics surveys the work of contemporary sculptors, potters, and mixed media artists who have turned the ancient medium of clay into an articulate vehicle for political and social commentary. Educator and curator Judith S. Schwartz gathers the works of more than two hundred artists from thirty different countries into a glossy full-color overview of the radical ceramics scene. Provocative pieces from makers such as Grayson Perry, Robert Arneson, Richard Notkin, Howard Kottler, as well as newer talents, address personal, social, and geopolitical injustices from rape to racism. In their own words, these bold artists discuss the outrage behind their outrageous works. Schwartz provides historical context for current and late twentieth-century protest in the form of ceramics. She also places the artists within thematic groupings: war and politics, the social and human condition, gender issues, the environment, and popular and material culture.

Filled with subtle satire, garish jests, grotesque shock treatments, and moving testaments, Confrontational Ceramics is a radical departure from conventional coffee-table ceramics books on decorative housewares or formal abstractions. This art book will amuse, inspire, and possibly offend art historians, ceramics collectors, and anyone with an eye for the outlandish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning and informative book
Who would have thought there are so socio-political artists working in ceramics?Judy Schwartz has created a stunning and informative book. In the West, ceramics has long been pigeonholed as craft, and not a serious art form. This book goes a long ways in educating the viewer on the potential of clay. It is an honor to be included in Confrontational Ceramics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye-opening
We always knew writing, painting, drawing, and photography were powerful agents of social comment---but ceramics? Well, yes ... and the use of ceramic art as a means of provocative social and political comment goes back a lot farther than most people might think. Judith Schwartz has assembled an astonishing array of challenging, moving, and forceful pieces of ceramic art, intelligently arranged and superbly photographed. Paging through this book will change the way you look at ceramics specifically and art in general. A powerful and eye-opening collection, worth the attention of anyone who claims to care about art.

The book is in full-color displaying one to three art pieces perpage. Both handbuilt & wheel-thrown ceramics are shown. Captionsprovide the artist's name, date completed, & size as well as materials& techniques used.

Some of my favorite pieces includes a raku cracklejar & carved tree tiles. I love both the plate with waves & ateapot, and another with egrets on it. I also enjoyed a hand-builtmulti-colored teapot.

Several eclectic figures, a humorous birdsculpture, & a huge mosaic-style dragonfly screen also caught my eye. This is an indispensable reference tool packed with great ideas & amust-have book for any serious ceramic artist. ... Read more

Product Description
Pressure exerted by America in 1854 caused Japan to open its doors after 260 years of isolation. Wide receptiveness to everything Western was the driving force behind the modernization of Japan initiated by the Meiji government, yet it also induced a rapid rediscovery of indigenous cultural values. At early Paris and London international exhibitions, the Japanese decorative and applied arts sparked off the Western fascination with all things Japanesejaponisme. In Japan, on the other hand, new technologies were eagerly adoptedthe government realized that increasing production for export would be an excellent means of promoting Japanese economic growth and thus enhancing Japan's status worldwide. Meiji Ceramics represents the first in-depth study of the development of Japanese export porcelain against a highly charged background of political, economic and cultural factors. Includes 180 artists's signatures.Text in English. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Zankin and the electric kiln
Zankin presents a very thorough explanation of the various aspects of electric kiln firing.I was specially impressed with the section on glazes for different temperatures.Highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This will get you rolling....
This book is excellent. It will teach you not only everything you need to know to get started, but it gives glaze recipies and tips for intermediate types as well.I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars watch for hardback/paper - entirely different books
The paperback is not just a paper version of the hardback, which Amazon makes it sound like it is, but a whole different, and much better, book. The hardback (edition 2) has poor black and white photos and treats many subjects invery cursory way.The paperback has wonderfully original art in color, and is very thorough on ways of marking and glazing.I was not careful and now have a crummy 2nd edition hardback which I don't know quite what to do with.
My 5 stars are for the paperback.I would only give 2 stars to the 2nd edition hardback.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Starter Book on Glazing
For someone new to firing and glazes, this book is an excellent place to start. It explains things in simple terms, provides pictures and demystifies the process. While it doesn't provide an in-depth discussion of chemical changes and formulas or more than some basic recipes, it provided the basics I was looking for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information for the possible dabbler.
I'm still not sure we're going to invest in a ceramics kiln, but this was a very interesting book about the craft.Too much biography of famous contemporary ceramic artists (totally uninteresting - these are not names that mean anything to me, so, bleah), but otherwise interesting explanations of different types and techniques.A very worthwhile book - it will probably either galvanize you into investing in the kiln and materials, or turn you away from it, saving your money! ... Product Description
This volume presents a range of petrographic case studies as applied to archaeological problems, primarily in the field of pottery analysis, i.e. ceramic petrography. Petrographic analysis involves using polarising optical microscopy to examine microstructures and the compositions of rock and mineral inclusions in thin section, and has become a widely used technique within archaeological science. The results of these analyses are commonly embedded in regionally specific reports and research papers. In this volume, however, the analytical method takes centre stage and the common theme is its application in different archaeological contexts. Contents: 1) Henry Clifton Sorby (1826-1908) and the development of thin section petrography in Sheffield (Noel Worley); 2) The provenance potential of igneous glacial erratics in Anglo-Saxon ceramics from northern England (Rob Ixer & Alan Vince); 3) Technological insights into bell-beakers: a case study from the Mondego Plateau, Portugal (Ana Jorge); 4) Indigenous tableware production during the archaic period in western Sicily: new results from petrographic analysis (Giuseppe Montana, Anna Maria Polito & Ioannis Iliopoulos); 5) Petrographic & microstratigraphic analysis of mortar-based building materials from the temple of Venus, Pompeii (Rebecca Piovesan, Emmanuele Curti, Celestino Grifa, Lara Maritan & Claudio Mazzoli; 6) Provenance & production technology of Early Bronze Age pottery from a lake-dwelling settlement at Arqua Petrarca, Padova, Italy (Lara Maritan, Claudio Mazzoli, Marta Tenconi, Giovanni Leonardi & Stefano Boaro); 7) Ceramic technology & social process in late neolithic Hungary (Attila Kreiter, Gyorgy Szakmany & Miklos Kazmer; 8) Early pottery technology & the formation of a technological tradition: the case of Theopetra Cave, Thessaly, Greece (Areti Pentedeka & Anastasia Dimoula); 9) Fine-grained Middle Bronze Age polychrome ware from Crete: combining petrographic & microstructural analysis (Edward W. Faber, Peter M. Day & Vassilis Kilikoglou; 10) Pottery technology and regional exchange in Early Iron Age Crete (Marie-Claude Boileau, Anna Lucia dAgata & James Whitley; 11) The movement of Middle Bronze Age transport jars a provenance study based on petrographic and chemical analysis of Canaanite jars from Memphis, Egypt (Mary Ownby & Janine Bourriau); 12) Petrographic analysis of EB iii ceramics from Tall al-Umayri, Jordan: a re-evaluation of levels of production (Stanley Klassen); 13) Comparison of volcaniclastic-tempered Inca imperial ceramics from Paria, Bolivia with potential sources (Veronika Szilagyi & Gyorgy Szakmany); 14) Multi-village specialized craft production & the distribution of Hokoham sedentary period pottery, Tuscon, Arizona (James M. Heidke); 15) A preliminary evaluation of the Verde confederacy model: testing expectations of pottery exchange in the central Arizona highlands (Sophia E. Kelly, David R. Abbott, Gordon Moore, Christopher Watkins & Caitlin Wichlacz); 16) Ceramic petrography & the reconstruction of hunter-gatherer craft technology in Late Prehistoric Southern California (Patrick Quinn & Margie Burton). ... Product Description
Over the last two decades of the twentieth century, the Ceramic Arts Foundation (formerly the Institute for Ceramic History) presented International Ceramics Symposiums in New York, Toronto, London and Amsterdam, among other cities. The most recent attracted 3,500 participants, 65 national delegations and involved an arts festival spanning 73 museums and galleries. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
Contemporary Ceramics by Susan Peterson, Professor Emeritus at Hunter College, is a survey of recent ceramic art showing the work of over 260 artists, each with full-color illustrations, artist statements and brief biographies. It is not a technique book or a history of ceramics edition. It is a stunning array of artistic talent using a variety of techniques showing new artists and directions of new ceramic art. My only suggestions for improvement would be (for future reference) to include how the artists mark their work. ... Read more
