Product Description
LIO is brilliant! In this post-Calvin and Hobbes and post-Far Side world, this is the brass ring for cool!" --Dallas Morning News

* LI O is a pantomime strip featuring a curious young boy whose daydreams embark from reality destined for the dark chasm where wit and sarcasm collide.

Drawn in the age-old style of pantomime strips, LIO offers a decidedly new and edgy twist to the wordless comic format. That's right, LIO is so crafty it doesn't need word balloons, dialogue boxes, or clever captions. Mark Tatulli's cartoon also employs a unique drawing style influenced by cartooning greats Gahan Wilson, Charles Addams, and 19th-century satirist A. J. Volck.

* In describing his strip, Tatulli explains he was eager "to bring something truly different to the comics pages . . . something to appeal to all ages, drawn in pictures only. To tell a story without text, while updating the pantomime concept with a modern audience in mind."

* The result is a mind-bendingly humorous and astute journey into the darkly detailed world of young LiO-where a spit wad can put a school bus out of commission faster than a spider can hamper the efforts of the U.S. Postal Service. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I love this book. It is my second on the series and I'm looking forward to have them all.

5-0 out of 5 stars No longer missing Calvin!
If Calvin had had a little brother Lio would be him! This is funny and dark and funny and edgy and funny. If you like Calvin and Hobbes as well as Pearls before Swine, you will love these comics!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lio, Happiness is a Sqishy Cephalopod
Pure Genius!!Imagine Dennis the Menace channeling H.P Lovecraft and you have Lio.To me, one of the marks of a great cartoonist is the abilty to craft truely funny, universally understandable cartoons without the use of words. That ability is the essence of Lio.

5-0 out of 5 stars At Last, A Successor!...
Ever since Charles Addams, comics have had their wonderfully wicked weirdos. Mark Tatulli's LIO is the latest successor to the hideous throne! In HAPPINESS IS A SQUISHY CEPHALOPOD, Tatulli captures the essence of (mostly silent) gallow's humour, mixed w/ an irresistible kid's-eye-view. LIO is the kid next door who just happens to be a mad scientist, monster enthusiast, and all around anarchist! If you love Addams, Gahan Wilson, Sergio Aragones, Don Martin, or Gary Larson, then you should find just the right amount of hilarity and horror in these pages... ... Read more

Product Description
There are about 700 species of cephalopods (including the cuttlefishes, squids, octopods, and the chambered nautilus) living throughout the seas of the world. They are considered to be the most highly evolved marine invertebrates and possess elaborate sense organs, large brains and complex behavior. This book examines such behavior, summarizing field and laboratory data from a wide variety of sources in the first comprehensive account of the life of cephalopods in their natural habitats. This book surveys the way cephalopods find prey and escape predators, how they reproduce, how they learn, and how they communicate using complex body patterns. Throughout, the volume emphasizes the gaps in our knowledge in the hope of stimulating more biologists to study these beautiful and fascinating animals. Researchers in animal behavior, marine biology, and neuroscience will find the subject matter especially appealing. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A serious source for the seriously interested in cephalopods
This book really isn't for everyone. Only the seriously interested in cephalopods should attempt to read it. But if you are interested in cephs and you have a good scientific background, there's a ton of interesting information in here. These are fascinating animals and the more you know about them, the more fascinating they are. Who knew that nautilus have 90 tentacles? Who knew that along with their obvious chromatophores, cephalopods also have reflecting cells and all kinds of interesting bioluminescence? But how do they really communicate? Are they as smart as they seem? There is so much that isn't known! At least according to this book that was last updated in 2002. Makes me wonder how much new information is available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meet the world's most advanced invertebrates!
If you are as fascinated with squid as Professor Sean is, this book will keep you awake for days! This textbook covers nearly every aspect of cephalopod behavior and the underlying neurophysiological basis. Topics include color change, feeding and foraging, defense, reproduction, communication, learning, and ecology. What's perhaps most striking is how well Hanlon and Messenger explain things. This is a highly readable and fascinating account of these most amazing organisms. This is truly a must-have reference for anyone interested in cephalpods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous
The best basic allround book on the subject Cephalopoda. Most books about the Phyla are writen from a neurological aspect, but this one differs. I goes into the complex behaviour of the smartest animals to use gills. I doesn't plunge into the dephts of scientific jargon but stays at a level that most layman understand and any biology undergraduate student should understand. Every chapter ends with a tip about futher studies and serves to water a students interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Exceptional Book. A MUST for serious divers & naturalists
A well written - highly informative - book for those who want to know more about the fascinating cephalopods. Easy to understand even if you are not a marine biologist. I own over 450 books related to the marine environment and this is definitely among the top ten.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cephalopod Behaviour

Squid, cuttlefish and octopuses, which form the marine mollusc group the cephalopods, are of great and increasing interest to marine biologists, physiologists, ecologists, environmental biologists and fisheries scientists. Cephalopods: Ecology and fisheries is a thorough review of this most important animal group.

The first introductory section of the book provides coverage of cephalopod form and function, origin and evolution, Nautilus, and biodiversity and zoogeography. The following section covers life cycles, growth, physiological ecology, reproductive strategies and early life histories. There follows a section on ecology, which provides details of slope and shelf species, oceanic and deep sea species, population ecology, trophic ecology and cephalopods as prey. The final section of the book deals with fisheries and ecological interactions, with chapters on fishing methods and scientific sampling, fisheries resources, fisheries oceanography and assessment and management methods. ... Product Description

While books previously published about octopuses and cuttlefish offer information about these animals in their natural habitats, Cephalopods is the first book that extensively covers care and husbandry techniques for keeping these exotic and highly intelligent marine creatures in the home aquarium.

Written by two experienced hobbyists who have had multiple successes keeping cephalopods, Cephalopods includes species that will survive in the home aquarium as well as species to avoid. The book also provides instructions for the difficult but rewarding task of breeding cephalopods in the home aquarium. A special chapter is devoted to photographing your octopuses and cuttlefish so you can capture their exquisite appearance and ethereal movements for years to come. Tip boxes, charts, and sidebars serve as the perfect compliment to the beautiful photography and informative text.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
This book is amazing. It has all information you need for keeping these amazing creatures. Plus the pictures are outta this world. I original bought the book to use as reference but it is now the centerpiece of my coffee table. Everyone that flips through it is amazed at the information and pictures, its a great conversation starter. I highly recommend this book! It's a must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, practical, approachable guide to keeping cephalopods
This is a wonderful book on multiple levels. First and foremost, it is the most complete and practical book in circulation regarding how to successfully keep cephalopods for the layperson. This is the reason I bought the book, and it is the previously empty niche that this book fills nicely.

Secondly, it is a beautiful work, with many stunning photos of cephs, examples of their behavior, and demonstrations of their diversity. This not only makes it aesthetically pleasing, but also encourages hobbyists in what is otherwise a daunting subject. This is also the reason that this book has broader appeal, to the non-hobbyist but nature-loving group, as a coffee-table book. I even caught my artist brother using it as a model for some sketch work.

Thirdly, although the subject matter can be intimidating and technical, the writing style is not, so the end result is that it is quite approachable. I think that anyone even casually considering keeping cephalopods should read this beforehand. It is a relatively miniscule time/money investment and is very helpful in this regard. This is the category I am in; I am an experienced marine aquarist, but have never kept a cephalopod before.

My only criticism of the book is that it could have been made into more of a reference, with some more detailed advice. For example, one of the unique features of keeping octopuses (and therefore not found in other books) is sealing the tank. This is treated superficially, and would have benefited from additional practical suggestions, some detail tank photos, and perhaps some diagrams. Similarly, another of the unique problems cephalopod hobbyists face is picking the correct species. The descriptions of commonly kept species is excellent, but a tabled summary comparing them would be helpful. More practical help with identifying species of octopuses (text and photos) would also be welcomed, especially since we cannot rely on the vendors for correct identification, and the species makes such a difference.

In summary, this book is outstanding on several levels, and is a very informative and enjoyable read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know about keeeping cephs, but also a beautiful coffee-table book!
This wonderful book is a long-overdue resource, detailing everything you need to know to successfully keep a cephalopod at home. It clearly explains why cephs are not the easiest marine pet you can choose, without being daunting, and it is obvious the authors are not only extremely knowledgeable and experienced, but very enamored with cephalopods. The book concentrates on Octopuses and Cuttlefish, since these are the most common cephs kept as pets, but there is also interesting information on Nautilus.

I set up my first Octopus tank last summer, and during the planning stages I was intimidated by the lack of concise yet comprehensive resources. I am lucky enough to have access to academic journals, so I was able to refer to the small number of published methods papers, but I don't know how anyone was brave enough to keep an Octopus without access to scientific methods papers UNTIL NOW. With the publication of this book, that has all changed. It is fantastic, and really covers everything you need to know to get started (luckily after reading the book it turns out I am doing most things right!).

On top of the content though, the pictures are incredibly beautiful. This would work easily as a coffee table book for those who don't intend keeping a cephalopod, but just find them fascinating. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone interested in cephalopods.

5-0 out of 5 stars A welcomed publication for the cephalopod enthusiast
Over 37+ years of marriage, my husband and I have kept a number of unusual pets, along with the typical dogs and cats. For each of these (both the unusual and for each breed of the typical) we have purchased untold numbers of books about each animal. Most have been read once and never reviewed again because the information was too basic, found to be just plain incorrect or lacked an appropriate index to locate information when needed. The prospective and current cephalopod keeper will find this book pleasingly different.Octopuses and Cuttlefishes for the Home Aquarium stays on topic, has a 12 page index and provides solid guidelines for successfully choosing and keeping a cephalopod at home.

Opening the book, one of the first things the reader notices is the display of on topic photographs at the turn of every page.It is quite clear that the pictures are of multiple environments and depict actual aquarium pets, a welcomed accomplishment from both the publisher and the authors. The type is clear without being geriatric, the layout and subtopic headings make skimming for specific information quick and easy while the sidebars provide interesting suggestions or observations based upon personal experiences.

The content is a must for anyone contemplating keeping an octopus or cuttlefish. In December of 2006, with the help of [...], we added our first octopus to an aquarium designed and setup 8 months prior for this inhabitant. At that time there were no books and few on-line guides.Today keeping a cephalopod has become an interest to a fast growing number of marine enthusiasts but until this publishing, short, hard to find magazine articles have been the only publications giving a hint on successful aquarium environments and containing very little about care or what to expect during the animal's lifetime.Nancy and Colin discuss the entire captive life cycle from housing design, choosing a species, obtaining, acclimating, housing, feeding and egg laying to dying, providing aquarist with a clear understanding of the requirements for raising a cephalopod as well as sighting which animals to avoid and why they are unsuitable for aquarium life.

The book is an enjoyable and informative cover-to-cover read.Don't stop reading once you reach the appendix! It is full of interesting suggestions and factoids for enriching a cephalopod experience.

Product Description
Is there a more bizarre-looking animal in the sea than the octopus? A baggy, boneless body surmounted by a pair of soulless eyes and fleshy horns. Eight snake-like arms with hundreds of suction cups, a stubby funnel projecting like a left-over piece of fire hose... not to mention its three hearts and blue blood. The word cuddly doesn't spring to mind when contemplating these creatures but all are superbly mobile and beguilingly clever.

This book is the culmination of more than forty years of undersea photography and study of the most impressive octopus on the Pacific coast, the giant Pacific octopus. This fascinating monster of the deep--the largest known octopus species in the world--is a master of disguise that can mimic not only the colour but also the texture of its surroundings. It can alter its shape so effectively that small specimens have escaped captivity by slithering down aquarium filter pipes. Wet, cold and slimy, it hunts and pulls apart hardshell crabs. Normally shy, it may interact with divers it comes to recognize. It can learn how to pry open a food container and remember the technique for the next feeding.

Groundbreaking research and previously unpublished biological behaviours are presented along with octopus legends, anecdotes from aquarists and divers and colour photographs of the giant Pacific octopus and other cephalopods found along the Pacific coast, including the Humboldt squid and ruby octopus. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Expert Reference
A wonderful REFERENCE for perspective, particularly, in the collection of specimen from Mid-America/Western States, USA. This is a good read.

4-0 out of 5 stars An atlas for Pierre Shale ammonites
The Pierre Shale Formation has yielded some of the most attractive upper Cretaceous ammonite faunas. Those who had a chance to visit the BHIGR museum in Hill City probably know what I am talking about. These ammonites are very important biostratigraphically: this book depicts most of them and saves the reader from parsing all Bill Cobban's articles to get an idea of how rich was ammonite biodiversity at this time. Illustrations are clear, text is authoritative and information accurate. I regret the lack of a composite log and tips to pinpoint particular biozones in the field. It is nevertheless a necessary addition to all cephalopod fans.

This book was written by the folks at Black Hills Institute of Geologic Research.Neal is the leading authority of invertibrates of this period. The book lists species and where specimens have been found. Product Description

This book brings together an international group of scientists focusing on present-day and fossil cephalopods, ranging broadly from Paleozoic ammonoids to today's octopods. It has three general sections dealing with: systematics and evolution; descriptions of hard- and soft part morphology; and ecology, biogeography, and taphonomy. Several highlights include new evidence for the existence of an ink sac in fossil ammonoids, a biogeographic study of clymeniid ammonoids throughout the world, the first record of a radula in baculite ammonoids, and an in-depth study of octopus ecology in Alaska. The book is remarkable in its treatment of both fossil and living forms at the same time, with the aim of presenting the wide diversity of cephalopods now and in the past.

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Cephalopods," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Cephalopods in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Cephalopods when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Cephalopods, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
