Product Description
Kiss My Math meets A Tour of the Calculus

Jennifer Ouellette never took math in college, mostly because she-like most people-assumed that she wouldn't need it in real life. But then the English-major-turned-award-winning-science-writer had a change of heart and decided to revisit the equations and formulas that had haunted her for years. The Calculus Diaries is the fun and fascinating account of her year spent confronting her math phobia head on. With wit and verve, Ouellette shows how she learned to apply calculus to everything from gas mileage to dieting, from the rides at Disneyland to shooting craps in Vegas-proving that even the mathematically challenged can learn the fundamentals of the universal language. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars THE CALCULUS DIARIES PUT ME TO SLEEP IN A CALCULATED 5 MINUTES!!
Guest Reviewer ! MRS. KNOW IT ALL ;-b

I enjoyed math in school and it was the one course I took extra classes of even though I already had my necessary math credits. So, I thought I would enjoy this book, but I found myself getting glazed eyes within a few minutes.I tried numerous times, but would only get a few pages and then had to put it down.I think this is more for the MATH NERDS than for the average person.Of course, the title "How Math Can Help You Lose Weight, Win in Vegas, and Survive a Zombie Apocalypse"was the come on----who doesn't want to lose weight and who doesn't want to win in Vegas. And I know I sure want to know how to survive a Zombie Apocalypse!!!!But, all I learned how to do with this book was to fall asleep within 5 minutes---which would get me Fat, Miss the Winning Number in Vegas, and be a sitting duck for the Zombies. So I pass on this one and so should you if you don't want to be Zombie meat!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Strangely interesting...
It's a bit like Waiting for Godot meets Mr. Wizard. In this case one of the characters is Ms. Ouellette's description of her life and ideas and the other is her admittedly fascinating description of historical events surrounding the lives of mostly obscure mathematicians and physicists.Playing the part of Godot is a deeper understanding of Calculus.Just as with Mr. Becket's play that deeper understanding, for me anyway, never happened.

The author tries, real hard, to translate mathematical concepts into concrete, real world experiences and visa versa. However, for that to work you need to create an "ah-ha" moment.Talented classroom teachers can do that because they can feed off their classes. For someone writing a book it's more difficult because you can't judge what the readers are thinking. It's not impossible, just ask Steven King, but it takes more than even the most cogent explanation.

On the plus side, even without car chases and space aliens the author has some interesting stories to tell. And who knows...While you are enjoying hearing about Ms. Ouellette's love of things arcane including integrals and derivatives, her family, her friends, her car, her apartment, her trip to Vegas, and her recounting about the lives and atypically interesting deaths of scientists through the ages *you* might find yourself getting a strange chill down your back as something that was once an ephemeral notion suddenly pops into crystal clarity. If not, you've still had an enjoyable time reading a strangely interesting book.

1-0 out of 5 stars should have been rejected by an editor
This will teach you about as much math and possibly less than you learned from watching Numbers. It has some interesting bits of trivia but is neither diary enough nor calculus enough to be interesting on either front. This is an entirely self-indulgent gee look at me kind of book which an editor worth his or her salt should have stopped in its tracks. If you have already learned a little calculus then it has nothing for you.If you have not already learned calculus it doesn't have enough of an explanation even conceptually for you to follow.Sorry I bought it.IF editors are to have any role in the coming world it should be stopping this kind of book from wasting people's money, by telling authors to revise or simply refusing to print such a weak effort.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Disappointing
I thought that "Calculus Diaries" contained a good description of calculus
for people who did not know what calculus is, however, the sub-title of the
book implied that it would contain information on how one could use calculus to
solve problems in one's everyday life and it did not do that.

1-0 out of 5 stars Math will save our future
I tried learning something about calculus because I know educated children of the future need to know science and math to care about this planet.
We will never learn science and math if those who know, can't learn how to be educators. This book needed to go slow, havesimple explanations, be repetitive and have many diagrams!
I'm still interested in learning why it is important and more about how is it done? ... Read more

Product Description
The mere thought of having to take a required calculus course is enough to make legions of students break out in a cold sweat. Others who have no intention of ever studying the subject have this notion that calculus is impossibly difficult unless you happen to be a direct descendant of Einstein.

Well, the good news is that you can master calculus. It's not nearly as tough as its mystique would lead you to think. Much of calculus is really just very advanced algebra, geometry, and trig. It builds upon and is a logical extension of those subjects. If you can do algebra, geometry, and trig, you can do calculus.

Calculus For Dummies is intended for three groups of readers:

  • Students taking their first calculus course – If you're enrolled in a calculus course and you find your textbook less than crystal clear, this is the book for you. It covers the most important topics in the first year of calculus: differentiation, integration, and infinite series.
  • Students who need to brush up on their calculus to prepare for other studies – If you've had elementary calculus, but it's been a couple of years and you want to review the concepts to prepare for, say, some graduate program, Calculus For Dummies will give you a thorough, no-nonsense refresher course.
  • Adults of all ages who'd like a good introduction to the subject – Non-student readers will find the book's exposition clear and accessible. Calculus For Dummies takes calculus out of the ivory tower and brings it down to earth.

This is a user-friendly math book. Whenever possible, the author explains the calculus concepts by showing you connections between the calculus ideas and easier ideas from algebra and geometry. Then, you'll see how the calculus concepts work in concrete examples. All explanations are in plain English, not math-speak. Calculus For Dummies covers the following topics and more:

  • Real-world examples of calculus
  • The two big ideas of calculus: differentiation and integration
  • Why calculus works
  • Pre-algebra and algebra review
  • Common functions and their graphs
  • Limits and continuity
  • Integration and approximating area
  • Sequences and series

Don't buy the misconception. Sure calculus is difficult – but it's manageable, doable. You made it through algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Well, calculus just picks up where they leave off – it's simply the next step in a logical progression. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars lifesaver
This book saved me! My first calc class blew me away i credit the teacher but no need for excuses. I did very poor on my first college calc exam then I dropped the class and read this book very intently until I got a good understanding of the calculus ideas. The author, Mark Ryan is brilliant, his credibility precedes him which is obvious. He is very easy to understand and cracks a lot of jokes though out the book. Two things to point out: I don't suggest skipping class and just reading this book it will not work because, use this as an aid if anything, also the book takes a while to go through and really understand all the steps in the example. Anyway great book, helped me get an A in calc I and II and hopefully III.

5-0 out of 5 stars Calculus for Dummies - Simpliest Calculus Book Out There
This is the most simpliest book on the most difficult math I've seen yet. This is great! I love it. It explains it in words that I can understand. Most of the books I have seen don't even come close. If you want to learn calculus, get this book! I recommend it. Highly!

For the longest time, when I read other books, I had a hard time understanding what y=3x+5 means (for example). This books explains that down to the detail where other books don't. And I am slow at learning math so this tells me from the starting point - which is exactly what I need. Otherwise, what's the point?

    Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best exposition of calculus concepts I've found
    Dear Dr. Ryan:

Thank you for your explanation of calculus concepts in the "Dummies" book. It is the clearest exposition of these ideas I've seen anywhere - and I've searched many sources. You are the best. The world needs great teachers like you. Keep up the excellent work.

    Sincerely,

    Wayne Becker

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for calculus
I am a frequent customer of Amazon web site. I have bought a lot of things from Amazon and I rarely spend time to write reviews just because of laziness.
This time, I decided to write a review for the book "Calculus made easy" to show my respect for the great work by the author. This is a miracle: This book was published in 1910! And it is still a great book for understanding calculus. How many things have happened between 1910 and now(2010)?! When I was reading this book, many times I cannot stop wondering how many engineers/scientists who designed weapons, air-fighters in World War I and World War II have learned calculus by reading this book, by looking at the same figures I am looking at?
Reading this book is like your grandfather, who is a great mathematician, is teaching you calculus. He will not "torture" you by a lot of materials for you to get "A" in a calculus exam. Instead, he kindly shows you the core, the spirit, or the secret of calculus. This book is not a calculus textbook. It is a small book, pocket size. It is a great helping book for me to read my calculus textbook.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy the Kindle version of this book!
Beware of the Kindle version of this book! It's awful.Major typos everywhere. Equations are mangled with text - looks nothing like the print version I own(which is still on 'loan' to a friend). It seems like the Kindle version was simply scanned using some type of text recognition software package. There was obviously no proofreading involved.I guess that's what you get for $2.88.

With that said, the print version is great. It should gave you a solid foundation in calculus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy the print edition, NOT the Kindle version!
I own both a print version and a just recently bought Kindle version of this book.Calculus Made Easy helped me re-learn calculus quickly before graduate school, and I can't recommend this book highly enough for its clarity and easily-understood approach to a sometimes daunting subject. So I was thrilled to see it being offered on the Kindle for less than a buck! After downloading, though, it quickly became apparent that the Kindle version isn't worth a dollar -- none of the mathematical symbols or formatting appear, and some of the text is indented so poorly that there is only a single word or number per line!I have the latest edition of the Kindle app, and an iPhone 4.

Do yourself a favor: buy the print edition with Martin Gardner's edits, and avoid the Kindle version.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this Kindle edition!
OK, this review is for the Kindle edition - the book itself is a classic and a must-read introduction to calculus. (five stars)

However, this and any other edition based upon the Project Gutenberg one should be strictly avoided:none of the mathematical symbols, graphs, and formulas are preserved in any useful way.The one Kindle edition that can be recommended is

    http://www.amazon.com/Calculus-Made-Easy-ebook/dp/B003XYEAOW/ref=tmm_kin_title_2?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2&qid=1285861412&sr=1-1

That edition, the one priced at $3.00, is a scan of the original book so it is not a typical Kindle book (i.e., you can't changes font size, etc.).However, it preserves the original formulas and graphs.

By the way, it should be noted that none of the Kindle editions are the version annotated by Martin Gardner.

4-0 out of 5 stars It made all other tests look like a joke
I recommend this to someone who gets 3-5's on practice Princeton tests. When I practiced on the exams in this book, they were more challenging (granted, I'm still in 8th grade, I don't know a lot about prep books)than many others. In fact, I used to get 5's on the princeton, but now I can barely get a 4 on this Barron's. However, after I used this book for a while, I decided to see my skill on Princeton tests (which people say are more similar to the REAL AP test). The Princeton tests became a joke. Before I took Barron's: 34/45 on MC and 38/54 on Free response; after I took barron's tests: 40/45 on MC; 45/54 on Free response. There was a sudden increase in scores, even though Barron had many questions that weren't gonna be on the real Ap test.

5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging but rewarding
This book has a thorough coverage of AP Calculus AB/BC. I used this book for the multiple-choice section and CollegeBoard's own materials for the free-response section. Most of my students scored 5. I also used some of its chapters for my IB Mathematics SL and HL students.

Most US high-school students feel calculus is too challenging for them since they did not have enough practice in algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus. The following is my suggestion: if you got at least an A in pre-calculus/trigonometry, you may want to learn calculus in high school; otherwise, wait until you get into the college.

Barron's AP Calculus over-prepares the students for the test a little bit. But that is not a bad thing. If you have used mathematical analysis problem sets written by Russian mathematicians, you will think that Calculus I/II taught in the US is way too easy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Preparation for Multiple-Choice Questions
I used this book solely for the multiple-choice practice problems, not the review or tests, so I can only vouch for the MC problems. The coverage of topics is both broad and deep, with well over 500 problems of varying difficulty. Taking the AP Exam, I felt confident, prepared, and familiar with every problem type. The only complaint I have is the lack of fully developed solutions to the MC problems. The short one- or two-line explanations were always enough to answer any of my questions, but for those struggling with the concepts, they may prove inadequate.

3-0 out of 5 stars Calc AB student
This book has its pros and cons.On the one hand, it has an incredible amount of practice problems (organized by chapter) and is well organized in that topics and practice problems specified for "just BC students" are well marked(However, arc length is on the AB syllabus, not just BC as this book says it is).The book also provides four practice tests for both AB and BC, more than you will find in any other Calculus prep book.

However, many of the practice problems found in the "end of the chapter practice problems," as well as in the practice tests, are not representative of questions that have come up on previous AP exams. In my AP Calc class, we did every college board released multiple choice section since 1978 as well as every free-response question given in the past 10 or so years.Though the practice tests given in this book are okay, and will provide good practice, it is evident Barrons did not do enough research into the AP Calculus exams themselves. Many of theproblems (though not all), are either too difficult, or simply too different from questions that you will actually encounter on the AP test to be very helpful.

I gave this book three stars because it CAN be helpful if used as extra practice-- as a supplement to any in-class preparation. However, I strongly discourage purchase of this book if you 1. don't have a good foundation for most of the calculus topics or 2. aim to self-study for the exam.As already noted in previous reviews of Barron's AP Calc prep books, their subject review is hard to understand, muddled with confusing language--Barron's simply makes no attempt to simplify their explainations.Furthermore, their "answers explained" sections at the end of practice problem sections and practice tests are short, often only one sentence long, rendering them useless most of the time.

The last complaint I have for this book is that Barron's provides no "AP scoring chart" for you to self grade and find your corresponding AP grade (1-5) at the end of a test.Granted, the other calc prep books I've looked at don't either, but it's an annoyance to not know where you stand after taking a practice test for 3 hours.

For those looking for better topic review, I would try Peterson's "Master the AP Calculus AB and BC" book.I hear the authors review is simplified and easier to understand for someone not so familiar with the material. For those who are familiar with the material and who want extra practice, this book isn't half bad, it is well organized and has unlimited practice problems--just don't get scared off by some of the tougher problems. The best practice, however, is past AP exams.Ask your teacher/school if they have any of them; if not, they're available on collegeboard.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best AP review
Best review for AP exam out there.I teach the AP course and have tried many others. The questions in this book are challenging - prepping an AP student well for exam day. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All the problems you need right here! :)
This book is a great reference for when I am doing my homework on the book required by my calculus course. Whenever I do not know how to approach a certain type of problem, when I am looking for the right steps and rules or even just the algebra behind certain equations, this book helps me out! One of the things that I always have to deal with, is the fact that my math professors are always skipping steps when solving a problem or even when correcting a test; this book will give you everything, step-by-step, and not leave you in the dark - having to spend at least twice the time solving a simple problem just because you got stuck on a silly step. CALC 1 AND CALC 2 here!

4-0 out of 5 stars great stuff.
I like this book a lot! it clears up many different things in calc. definitely worth it if you are struggling in calc.

3-0 out of 5 stars Meh.
So, I felt a little misled receiving this book. I understood it to be a WORKBOOK with solutions, but instead it is a book full of examples worked out for the reader. This may prove helpful to some, but did not fit what I was going for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved plenty of money!
This book was advertised as being "like new" and it was.I could not tell that it was any different than a book I could have purchased at a local book store! The service was great, as well. The book came in a few days earlier than I expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Saved My Butt
I understood Calculus 1 because I had a very good teacher in highschool but once I hit college, I had one bad professor after another. As my teacher from highschool had mentioned, most professors are really good at doing the math but don't have the skills to be teachers, explaining math in a way people can understand. So after failing Calculus 2 twice, I bought this book and studied for my LIFE!After struggling the first couple weeks of this course over the summer, I became extremely desperate and did some research for books that'll help me survive this class. The problem was, there wasn't many Calculus TWO books, mainly just books that covered topics from Calculus ONE.This book had good reviews too, so I went out and bought it.This book helped me out most in the homework we got every single day.It gave me clear explanations why this and that is wrong and the common mistakes one would face when doing this and that problem.

For me, this book was a miracle.Thank you Michael Kelley for making it!This book was hands down the key to passing Calculus 2 with a B.Without it I would've easily failed (like a 35% or something). This book is a keeper.I'm using it to help my girlfriend with her homework. ... Read more

This book takes no prior knowledge of mathematics for granted as it takes the student slowly and surely from addition all the way to a basic understanding of the calculus in the least painful and most efficient path possible. The calculus is not a hard subject, and this book proves this through an easy to read, obvious approach spanning only 100 pages. This book is written with the following type of student in mind; the non-traditional student returning to college after a long break, a notoriously weak student in math who just needs to get past calculus to obtain a degree, and the garage tinkerer who wishes to understand a little more about the technical subjects. This book is meant to address the many fundamental thought-blocks that keep the average 'mathaphobe' (or just an interested person who doesn't have the time to enroll in a course) from excelling in mathematics in a clear and concise manner. It is my sincerest hope that this book helps you with your needs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Elementary Calculus
To be fair, I haven't had a chance to actually read this book, but only to give it a quick appraisal. At just 98 pages there isn't much to it. The first half of the book deals with number lines and fractions. The second half gets more involved with actual calculus concepts...derivatives and such. If you need a book that provides a bridge between high-school algebra and pre-calculus, this might suit you. To be candid, I was disappointed by this anemic work and wouldn't recommend it generally. I gave it a four-star rating because I think the book is probably (a little), better than my quick appraisal suggests.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!
Although I am only about 10% into this book it seems great.I have not had the same experience that the other poster had with the bad graphics on kindle.I have been looking for a single book for a long time that will start with algebra and end up with calculus.I think that I have found it with this one!

2-0 out of 5 stars Graphics destroyed the usefulness of a good book.
The text is very clear and well written.
    The price is very reasonable.
The graphics are completely illegible on a Kindle2. This problem has presented itself on many other potentially useful books on the Kindle format. Many times the image is just pasted in without any regard for resolution. Please! make the graphics to suit the device so that the book can be enjoyed the way it was intended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but needs to be proofread
This book is very ambitious, and I applaud the author for his hard work. My only gripe with the book is the dodgy grammar and imprecise or incorrect wording (for example, "a part of" and "apart of" have exactly opposite meanings). Get someone to proofread it for you, and you'll have a top notch book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Charge More!!!
Wow, finally an easy to understand approach at Calculus.A wealth of knowledge for such a small price, well worth a much higher price.Knowledge like this is priceless!I would have paid $100.00 for this book, you must charge much more for this wonderful tool.

For many students, calculus can be the most mystifying and frustrating course they will ever take. The Calculus Lifesaver provides students with the essential tools they need not only to learn calculus, but to excel at it.

All of the material in this user-friendly study guide has been proven to get results. The book arose from Adrian Banner's popular calculus review course at Princeton University, which he developed especially for students who are motivated to earn A's but get only average grades on exams. The complete course will be available for free on the Web in a series of videotaped lectures. This study guide works as a supplement to any single-variable calculus course or textbook. Coupled with a selection of exercises, the book can also be used as a textbook in its own right. The style is informal, non-intimidating, and even entertaining, without sacrificing comprehensiveness. The author elaborates standard course material with scores of detailed examples that treat the reader to an "inner monologue"--the train of thought students should be following in order to solve the problem--providing the necessary reasoning as well as the solution. The book's emphasis is on building problem-solving skills. Examples range from easy to difficult and illustrate the in-depth presentation of theory.

The Calculus Lifesaver combines ease of use and readability with the depth of content and mathematical rigor of the best calculus textbooks. It is an indispensable volume for any student seeking to master calculus.

Serves as a companion to any single-variable calculus textbook Informal, entertaining, and not intimidating Informative videos that follow the book--a full forty-eight hours of Banner's Princeton calculus-review course--is available at Adrian Banner lectures More than 475 examples (ranging from easy to hard) provide step-by-step reasoning Theorems and methods justified and connections made to actual practice Difficult topics such as improper integrals and infinite series covered in detail Tried and tested by students taking freshman calculus ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Saved Me
With a week to go in Calculus II, I needed something to supplement my course's required textbook in order to be successful in the course. The textbook for the course seemed to focus too much on reinforcing concepts from previous chapters at the expense of learning new concepts. For example, when learning Sequences and Series, my course's text would put in challenging integration by parts of trig functions when demonstrating how to use the integral test for evaluating the limit. It is great to have challenging exercises to reinforce technique, but I would prefer a few more less challenging problems that demonstrate new concepts before making them more challenging.

By enormous contrast, Prof. Banner's book is concise and to-the-point when explaining new concepts. When there are prerequisite skills needed, he cross-references earlier parts of his book. In his introductory material, he has a table of what sections to focus on in case you have an upcoming test (this is what saved me).

After checking this book out at my university library, I went to his website and discovered several videos that summarize his book. The videos are in the same style that you might find at MIT's Open CourseWare site. The fact the Prof. Banner and Princeton University put these videos out to the world for free is the full reason I decided to purchase his book. It is least I can do to thank him for his talent and selflessness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
This book helped a lot for my calc class in college! very happy i purchased it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for calculus student or teacher!!!
Fantastic book for any calculus student. I found the explanations far superior to any I found anywhere else, including 4 different calculus textbooks. Highly recommended!!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars From the perspective of self study
There are a few things to note about this book:

    1) It covers two semesters of calculus (math 103 and 104 equiv. at Princeton).
    2) It's accompanied by about 48 hours of online video lectures, available at the book's website, via princeton.edu. These lectures are of a "calculus review" nature, and are not the primary lectures for a calculus 1 or 2 course.
    3) Those seeking a calculus review or a supplemental helper to an existing calculus course will benefit most; those doing self-study will likely need additional material, especially for practice and skill building.

    STRENGTHS:

-- Comes with ~48 hours of online video supplement.

-- Explains most first year calculus concepts in an accessible manner; there are a full two semesters of material in this book.

-- Concepts are accompanied by worked examples.

-- A value at twice the price for anyone seeking a calculus refresher or a supplement to an existing course/text.

    WEAKNESSES:

-- Lacks progressive reinforcement of many concepts; the reader is generally referred to previous chapters/sections for review.

-- No practice problems or skill building exercises; only one worked exercise per variation is usually provided.

-- Could benefit from a few more diagrams amidst descriptions and notation.

    BOTTOM LINE:

-- If you are currently enrolled in calculus or looking for a review or a reference, chances are you'll love this book (note the 5 star reviewers).

-- If you are a solo student looking for a replacement for classroom study, you may find this book a little less than satisfying.

It's from the perspective of self-study that I write this review; I used this book as a primary source for learning calculus. In the interest of full disclosure, I'm still about 50 pages from finishing.

While The Calculus Lifesaver definitely teaches the material in an often accessible manner, there are some issues. The main drawback is a lack of practice problems. While there are lots of examples, many of which are dealt with in a step by step manner, typically there is only one example given for each variation or problem type. This means that the reader will sometimes be plunged headlong into a problem type, when a gentler approach would have been more helpful. Fortunately following the online video lectures will ease much of this.

Let me just say that calculus is hard. It is hard but not impossible. This is coming from someone who began with basic algebra less than two years ago. Often calculus subjects take time to sink in, so expecting to cover 20-30 pages per day is not reasonable for anyone broaching calculus for the first time (some days I could barely do 5). Be patient and give concepts time to assimilate. Often a day or two after banging your head against the wall can make all the difference. If you're having trouble with the material in the book, shift gears to the video lectures. For me, this often made a big difference in my ability to digest the material. I prefer seeing and hearing first (then sleeping) then review and problem solving via the book.

A review like this will generally depend on how well the reader believes they are learning, even mastering the material. For me, working through The Calculus Lifesaver cover to cover, I often found myself lacking confidence in my ability to solve calculus problems. And although there are many diagrams, more would have been justified. Often I had trouble following the descriptions and notation, where most likely a few more illustrations would have helped. For the first part of the book, chapters 1-17, I followed up by studying Paul Dawkins' online calculus notes, available at tutorial.math.lamar.edu. These were very helpful for practice problems, not to mention a different perspective on notation and proofs -- there are also cheat sheets for trig identities, derivatives, and much more, and everything is available in PDF format. I intend to use Paul's notes for calculus 2 as well (essentially chapters 18-30 in TCL) which I'll begin shortly.

There is no doubt that The Calculus Lifesaver will teach you the concepts of calculus, and make digesting other calculus material much easier. However, it's unlikely to be sufficient as a solo guide unless you've taken the subject in the past. In that case it will make for terrific review and a great reference. This book will best benefit those who are already enrolled in a calculus course, and are having trouble with their text or teacher. For those going solo, it's still a good book, but it doesn't quite stand on its own.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre supplement for a self-learner
I have a wide array of calculus self-help books riddling my book shelf -- half of them have not been opened. Luckily, this book is not so heavy to weigh down my bookshelf more than any other book.

"The Calculus Lifesaver" was one of the few calculus books that I opened and began to peruse. As a self-learner who has never taken a course in calculus (my previous experience was trigonometry), I found the book to be somewhat daunting.

The explanations are rather inconsistent: they tend to be concise and easy to understand at times; they can also be long, tedious, and circumlocutive, making them difficult to follow for the lay. Even though there are a handful of examples, they don't show up until the middle chapters of the book, after derivatives and differentiation. It would be better if the book had more examples and illustrations early on during the two crux of calculus in order to familiarize the reader before moving onto more advanced topics. Because of this, I am struggling to get past chapter 9.

There are some good points about this textbook. First of all, this book will appeal to people who are already in or trying to rekindle a relationship with calculus. The explanations are explained in such a way that the reader should have a loose grasp of the concepts of calculus. Also, the author tries to make the text entertaining by injecting a dose of humor every now and then. The symbols let readers know what to expect from the text, so if they see an example, they won't confuse it with a principle.

Right now, I am reading "Calculus Made Easy" by Silvanus Thompson and "The Humongous Book of Calculus Problems" by Mike Kelly, hoping to get more confident in calculus before coming back to this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Calculus book excellent
This is an excellent easily understandable book that covers mostly differential calculus.I am using it for an online math course and really enjoying it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Resource for Calculus Students
How to Ace Calculus breaks down some fairly advanced mathematical principles in a way that is SO easy to understand, you won't believe it.I honestly feel that if the average university calculus class taught to this book instead of a conventional text, grades would go up by a full letter grade across the board.Colin Adams, Abigail Thompson, and Joel Hass set out with the goal of making calculus accessible to everybody - and succeed admirably! This book really is a fantastic resource for every calculus student, I would recommend it to anyone!

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall, this is a very good book.
'How to Ace Calculus: The Streetwise Guide' is one of those rare math books that you would whip out for a happy night-time read. The humour will even help you to remember things-- for example, the section on parabolas tells a story about an insecure parabola that became taller and thinner when multiplied by 5, and moved into different neighbourhoods when something was added or subtracted to him.. or her (The way it is presented is funnier; I guess it's just boring when I'm the one telling it. ^_^).

The book provides more of an overview, with cool little devices to assist the Calculus student and his textbook. It is by no means a replacement for the text, as it tends to assume that the student already knows some ideas, or will be learning more from another source in the future.I'm sure it was designed as a supplement in the first place; that said, 'How to Ace Calculus: The Streetwise Guide' fulfills its purpose plus a little extra.

You will not regret getting this book; just keep in mind it is not an all-in-one deal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for school calculus AB course
This book was a great help for my daughter who took in school calculus AB. I graduated from college 30 years ago and would recommend this (and the 2nd book from this series) as an excellent refreshment course. It may not fit somebody who is graduating with major in math, but for me (an electrical engineer and I am not heading tomorrow for a calculus exam) it is a great textbook which I enjoy to read over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Does what it promises to do
I aced Calculus when I took it in high school, but I remember always struggling with the concepts and putting in many, many hours in order to get things down.I decided to start taking higher-level courses and decided to review Calc after about six years of not touching the stuff.
I started using this book as a supplement to working through a textbook and man does it make Calculus sooo much easier to grasp! The jokes might be a little cheesy, but it's all part of the light-hearted approach that makes the material all the less intimidating.
Had this book been written when I was in high school, I could have saved myself so many late nights. Love it. ... Read more

I had the 3rd edition and bought this one for my wife to take classes. It is quite satisfactory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Calculus Book
This book was in great condition when I got it. The subject isn't the easiest of course because it's calculus, but it was in good condition and serves its purpose.

4-0 out of 5 stars Text Review
Many reviewers claim that this text "skips steps/examples." This is true. However, Much of the information it skips can be found in a standard pre-calculus class. Did those reviewers not do well in their pre-calc class? Or even take it at all? It is a hard text, but for someone going into mathematics this is not an excuse. Intermediate algebra, trig, or arithmetic will not be covered in this text. If you are having trouble with the text I suggest picking up another book on calculus that will "hold your hand" through an introduction to calculus before reading this text. Sorry if I sound condescending but calculus is not easy and you may need lots of independent study without an instructor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Satisfaction
I am very satisfied with the purchase of Schaum's Outline of Calculus. The subject matter is presented in an excellent manner, and I received it very promptly. I would recommend it and the seller to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great and helpful book, but full of errors
I would definitely recommend this. Most chapters have 2-3 pages briefly summarizing concepts, which helped a lot. When they reference theorems or formulas, however, many times I've found that the section mentioned is nonexistent or unrelated to the topic. It doesn't detract from the book too much, unless this is your primary source for learning calculus (which it isn't intended to do anyways). All in all, I'm glad I got it. I like how brief each chapter is; great for review. It's very thorough, too.

I bought this so that I could do practice problems before my calculus CLEP test, but I've found myself reading and taking notes more than anything. A few misconceptions I got from my textbook were cleared up when taken from another angle, which this book provides. This book is especially helpful if you're under a deadline like I am.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good aid for calculus students
My son is using this to supplement his 11th grade calculus book.It seems to help with good worked out examples.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good material for anyone struggling with Calculus.
I have been introduced to "Schaum's Outlines" by a University Professor who uses them for his classes. They provide excellent practice exercises to help the student who may be struggling in an area. The answers are provided in the back and step by step instructions accompany the problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
If you know a little calculus, have taken it a while back or need to supplement your text, this book is very helpful. Plenty of problems to go through. Very helpful when trying to review for exams or GRE math subject test.If you have never taken any calculus, the explanations here are in outline form and will not help you understand much. This book covers Calc 1-2-3 in most undergrad requirements. If you are wanting to learn theory, there is almost none. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Just ok
I bought this as companion to the Calculus for Dummies book. The practice was useful but for me the practice problems were simply too hard. For a more advanced student this might be a good supplement.I found it frustrating.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
Best accompanied with Calculus for Dummies.Excellent workbook. It explains all the steps to solve a problem. If you're stuck or need to check your answer, flip a few pages ahead and bam, the answers and steps fully explained. It plays some tricks on you though, for example, if you did not memorize the things it tells you, it ends up in the work problems and you'll spend five minutes on it before giving up and going to the answer page only to see "gotcha! memorize this".

3-0 out of 5 stars Calculus for Dummies is Not for Dummies
I used this book to brush up on my Calculus before the CSET, however this book was only a gloss over of what Calculus really is.This book is more about memorizing techniques and methods, than learning what Calculus really means and represents.I have my BA in Math and would only recommend this book to people who have substantial background in math, but need to brush up on the concepts.

There is no reason not to have all the solutions for Stewarts 6e Calculus book, but that is not what we get: we get half.
There is no reason not to have the solutions we get not to be worked out fully--how do you know what steps are omitted and which are included? You don't, unless you don't need this book.
Other than that it can help in a pinch as long as you don't count on it.This book is part of the Stewart Calculus Industry where you go from the simplest example problems to the ailen world of "exercises".I came for calculus, not his industry nor his ailen worlds--and yes, I speak French.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but more practice problems would help
When it comes to math, I like a lot of practice problems to build a foundation of new material and work into the more challenging problems. This book does not do that.It does present a lot of information in each section but I would like it much more if it had more practice problems to really let the student get familiar with the new material before presenting more difficult problems.

I haven't read the book, but I am a former student of Dr. Gootman.I took him for Cal I & Cal II at UGA in the late 90's.He has a way of making a complex subject very easy to understnd.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful text!
Great book. I wanted something that was NOT like an ordinary calc text book that gave explanations with words instead of complex proofs. Great for anyone in a beginning calculus class. Quick and easy read before jumping into a calculus text book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Calculus Brush-Up
I took Calculus in college and I got an A.But I went so long without doing it that I became rusty, to say the least.I eventually reached the point where I wanted to teach Calculus but I was intimidated by the 500 page (or more) books out there.I came across this book by Gootman, and my problem was solved! The book reads like a novel. The topics came back to me immediately due to the clear way he presents them. While this book is certainly not AP level, I was able to use the foundation that this book gave me in order to teach myself AP Calculus. So I can honestly say that I would probably not be teaching AP Calculus right now had it not been for this book.
I only wish there were books out there like this for EVERY topic in existence!

4-0 out of 5 stars Calculus educator review
In preparation for a summer series of tutorials, I purchased a copy of Calculus by Eliot Gootman.

The author begins the selection with a review of concepts learned as part of the pre-Calculus curriculum taught at Souderton Area High School in the opening half of the book.He then begins a more in-depth study of the essential principles and concepts of Calculus in the work. What I have found especially useful are how the author describes the concepts in straightforward language and provides numerous sample problems broken down with both steps and notes from the problem to its solution. At the end of each chapter is a review of the major points and also exercises that the reader/student can solve, with answers provided in the back of the book.Because of this, I devised a worksheet with related problems for each chapter that incorporate the chapter concepts for the student to complete for summer homework.

In conclusion, the book is an excellent review of Calculus concepts, and can provide a bridge between high school and college level Calculus. The verbage is easy to understand, with sample problems and exercises that apply the chapter material.I will retain a copy of the work for future reference as a mathematics teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Through Calc 1 to 2
This book was the required text for my two semesters of calculus I had to slough through this past spring and summer. The first semester of calculus would be pretty rough for someone trying to learn it on your own because at times its the concepts that are a little challenging to understand rather than how to do the work. More than likely, some of the material can be confusing without the aid of a teacher or tutor but most chapters you can work independently through without any real problems at all (except the problems themselves, maybe). It will not really take you by the hand and show you all of the little algebra steps in the examples, however. That is YOUR own fault if you don't know what's going on. Do not be expected to be put in a stroller and wheeled around in the land of calculus when you should be walking tall with all the skills you acquired from algebra and trigonometry. As far as the writing goes, it is very well written to get across to most students what exactly you are trying to figure out with application problems included, the normal drill problems, and challenge problems (Putnam problems included). If you're good with algebra and trig, this whole first semester of calculus should be a cake walk for you in terms of difficulty. It is basically recalling all your old knowledge and applying them to new concepts involving basic differentiation and integration. This book I believe has aptly satisfied me with enough of a challenge as well as clarity in figuring out just what I need to know. For the students still having problems, they do have a solutions manual which got me through Calculus II like no other. Any time I was confused I would go through that book. A tip though is that if you're okay with it you should make annotations. I started doing that in calculus II because I was taking a summer course and imagine having to master the whole integration techniques chapter in 3 days. Was a nightmare. The solutions are usually well laid out and easy to follow but sometimes the steps you see there you can get stuck on if you don't know your algebra like second nature. I'd sit there and make notes on the little steps of what they did or would do to simplify their answers. It helps! Anyway, this book will get you through Calc I and Calc II is where this book really shines.

When I ordered this book I was worried that my exam would be over before I ever got the book, but I was wrong! The book not only came well before the exam, but it came in better condition that I would have ever thought. It was like new and would buy from again!

Updated and expanded to include the optional use of graphing calculators, this combination textbook and workbook is a good teach-yourself refresher course for men and women who took a calculus course in school, have since forgotten most of what they learned, and now need some practical calculus for business purposes or advanced education. The book is also very useful as a supplementary text for students who are taking calculus and finding it a struggle. Each progressive work unit offers clear instruction and worked-out examples. Special emphasis has been placed on business and economic applications. Topics covered include functions and their graphs, derivatives, optimization problems, exponential and logarithmic functions, integration, and partial derivatives. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Never Recieved the book.
I ordered three books at the same time. They were sent to an old apartment address and arrived at three different times to their office. The apartment complex claims never receiving this last book "Forgotten Calculus".

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical calculus book dedicated to solving real world business problems
Most Calculus textbooks assume their reader is majoring in Mathematics when at least 90%+ of students in Calculus 101 are not math majors. So result is that most Calculus textbooks expound on the fundamentals of theoratical Calculus that most of us will never use and put us to sleep, and that includes most engineering grads.

That is too bad since Calculus is an amazing tool to solve practical problems that can be quantified.

This book focuses on graphs, differentiation, and integration and how to use them to solve real world problems. There is no rigorous emphasis on limits, proofs, and asymptotes, and no undue focus on graphs. The book focuses on the basic rules of differentiation and integrals and how to use them to calculuate optimal (maximum or minimum) values given an equation or a practical problem.

Unfortunately, this book does not cover regression, which is a method on how to derive the equation that can unleash the power of Calculus.

I highly recommend this book as the first book on Calculus. I particularly recommend this book for business and non-science students.

If you need a Calculus refresher that leaves out the theoretical hodgepodge, then this book should also fit the bill.

Finally, I am sometimes apalled at the lack of even basic mathematical knowledge of today's business leaders. If you can master the contents of this book along with statistics, that will certainly put you ahead of pack. Knowledge of Calculus and Statistics is becoming MORE important especially because the explosion of information technology has put almost boundless data at most business's disposal.

2-0 out of 5 stars too much flash, too little substance
I bought three books to help me re-teach myself calculus this fall - two of them, Calculus, 7th Edition, book and CD, and Schaum's 3,000 Solved Problems in Calculus (Schaum's 3000), have been very helpful. Not so this book. It seems to favor fluffy, "alternative" ways to explain things, at the expense of explaining them thoroughly at all. Take a look inside and decide maybe if you are this kind of learner - but I have felt it to be pretty much utterly frustrating and useless.

5-0 out of 5 stars FORGOTTEN CALCULUS. A MUST!
It is a delight to have in the hands a book as this. Topics are well explained and they are understood well. And the best of all are the totally solved examples using the Texas Instruments TI-83 Plus Graphing Calculator, tool that allows to be centered more in understanding the concepts that in the mechanics of the resolutions and, at the same time, oneself can explore variations about the exposed problems, and instantly to check the different results. If you likes electronic calculators and you want to thoroughly learn mathematics in an amusing way, this is one of the books for those which to begin. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory Book
An excellent introductory book, especially for business students and those who are studying in community colleges and need a quick review.
Nowadays, every one knows how to use an electronic calculator or even a graphing calculator. The later chapters can be revised in a condensed manner, leaving out the simple arithmetic steps, making the book smaller and faster to read.
Some more numerical examples can be added and also a chapter on partial derivatives used in business math. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Buy
This Calculus book is a good buy because it has great examples and it teaches all the formalities that Calculus students need to know for college. Since it has Calculus I, II, and III course material in it the book is a good buy for how much it costs. I spent about 100 dollars on it and since I'm taking Calculus I, II, and III my 100 dollars is going a lot further. As of right now I'm only on chapter 3 but this book really makes Calculus make sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Calculus
The book arrived on time. It was much cheaper than buying it at school and it was brand new!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical
This is the second calculus book that I have bought. I had made the mistake of buying only the single variable book. That is a good thing to do only if you are taking calculus one and two. If you plan on taking all four levels of calculus, buy this book. It includes single and multivariable calculus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book is totally sufficient.I've read a couple reviews that say stuff like 'needs adequate examples to cover problems people will potentially be seeing in the problem sections...'
I had this book in college & I'm a workaholic. If you assign me 10 homework problems, I'll do 50 & then I'll do them again to make sure I really understood them.
There were very few times where there was a problem that couldn't be done.I'm not a 'brain' and the only reason I get good grades in math is due to work ethic, not special talent. If you do the problems in order, you shouldn't have a problem with understanding the questions. The sections are designed to step your level up as you're going through the problems. The theory questions may throw you but thats normal & there are too few of those to trip you up any way. This book isn't for the theory, its for Calc I, Calc II or Calc III which has very little theory in the syllabus. There's a seperate course for theory & it will give you its own headaches b/c when you have questions about why things were proved in certain ways, your teacher will have no clue but they still try to give a BS answer to trick you into thinking they do (they restate the definition/proof the waygradeschooler rewrites an Encyclopedia page for a report. They don't realize that students would respect them more if they just say 'I really don't know but if you understand the proof for what it is rather than how it came to be, you'll get through the section fine.'Which is how honest one of my teachers was at the beginning of a class I had in theory.).

1-0 out of 5 stars Kindle Version: Not Ready for Prime Time!
I bought the Kindle version of this book because I need a calculus reference to take with me and I don't want to carry another really big book.I have to say that having a text like this in my Kindle is a wonderful thing.I've seen some negative comments about the material in this book.Frankly, I find it to be a very understandable text.I like the author's presentation. So why one star? The formatting of the Kindle version.Wow!I'm reading through the first chapter and there are literally dozens of places where you have a variable name, such as x or y, that is joined to the next word (ex: For the function fdefined...are used instead of x.To evaluate...function was fi rst, etc)On one page the word "nonverticallines" appears twice. Here's one: "...are equivalent because Ll=0."There's no "Ll" anywhere else on the page. What this should have been was delta-x = 0.There are run-together's, misspellings, things left out, incorrect symbols...Again, that's only the first chapter. It's a shame to pay $139.00 and get a mess like this. This one's not ready for prime time. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars this book sucks
this book is so stupid. it doesn't make any sense. if anyone knows how to do the first problem, please let me know.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why not make it easier on yourself?
I can't imagine how horrible this would be as one's first exposure to calculus. The painless way to learn undergraduate mathematics: understand the basic concepts in elementary books, (get several different authors) Thomas, Simmons, Anton. Read them through and do a smattering of problems. Then, read linear algebra and a proof book. (get 'how to prove it'). After that take an actual analysis course. Get Rosenlicht' intro and "The Way of Analysis". From there you can go to any other subject.

I believe that the glowing reviews of Spivak represent a kind of stockholm syndrome by old guys forced to use it in 1965.

5-0 out of 5 stars simply the best
This is the first book that turned me towards math.It is beautiful and teaches mathematical rigor in a setting simple enough for beginning undergraduates to understand. The problem set alone is wonderful and touches on concepts well beyond the scope of the book.I still use this book as a reference for teaching and a solid source of problems to give the freshman calc students that I TA.This book always finds its way as a christmas or birthday present for anyone who appears to be of age to receive it.

I really cannot speak highly enough of Spivak's book. The foundations of calculus (and really analysis) are laid out an elementary level and a very readable (often funny) way.It leaves the reader ready to turn to blue Rudin for more analysis.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a fantastic book for the aspiring mathematician!
Michael Spivak's Calculus has reached legendary status in the mathematical community over the years. Anyone who would have done an Amazon search on it must have heard some stories about it. The many positive reviews pretty much sum up the praise I have for this book.I was fortunate enough to have this textbook at my side while going through U of M honors mathematics curriculum. We covered the material presented this book in the span of about four months, and I read through most of this book and did many of the exercises as either practice, or as part of my weekly homework assignments that were handed out. I love almost everything about his book!

Even though I love this book, there are a few things I would like to tell people who are looking at potentially buying this book

1), This will most likely be your first encounter with real mathematics. This book tests an entirely new skill-set that isn't developed in high schools today, so there will naturally be a steep learning curve. Take heart! Chapters 1, 2 and 5 are the worse; all the others are not as bad.

2). Know what you want! This book is mathematically rigorous (aka proofs). If you are an engineer or anything other than a student of pure mathematics, this will not be your cup of tea.

3). You will never again solve a problem in under 5 minutes! Many people who claim to be "good at math" have only seen the routine exercises that comprise high school mathematics today. Please be aware that this book contains PROBLEMS that force you to think long and hard and actually learn something. There are several reviews that claim that the questions are completely separate from the text, and that this book does not sufficiently prepare you for attacking the problems sets. I would like to say that, yes, the problems sets can easily become the problem sets from hell. However, everything you need to tackle them is there. Many reviewers are used to the "Oh look, I'm given a formula, and now I punch in numbers to solve these twenty exercises. Look how good I am at math mom!" type of math book. This book is staggeringly different.

However, if you knew all of this and still wish to buy this, or if these three cautions only excited you more, you may have what it takes to get through and love this book. This is a great first exposure to mathematics, and it truly prepares you to tackle the likes of Walter Rudin's Principles of Mathematical Analysis (International Series in Pure & Applied Mathematics).

5-0 out of 5 stars What is mathematics all about?
In a world of "cookbook" calculus courses where a proof is something you recite from rote for a test and a derivative can be formally shown to exist by virtue of the fact that James Stewart says so, it is comforting to find a Calculus book that shows its readers what it means to _do_ mathematics. In fact, this book is mostly about the 'doing' part of mathematics; Spivak cleanly and clearly explains concepts in each chapter, and then one absolutely must work through the exercises immediately following to get the full experience. Sure, it's difficult. It probably isn't appropriate for everyone, either. But, as a mathematics major, trust me when I say that there is no better preparation for difficult subjects like a rigorous foundation. This is what Spivak's Calculus book provides. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I like his style
This book was pretty good. My teacher didn't care that much for the subject matter and mostly wanted to end class early. I relied heavily on the material in the book. Overall though, I thought the author did a good job. Having the solutions manual helped me understand it alot better. I was able to purchase the solutions manual electronically by emailing zmanual(at)gmail(dot)com. Best of luck.

1-0 out of 5 stars Truly one of the worst Calc books ever
This book is the equivalent of that arrogant professor that assumes his students are stupid. I have taken Calculus several times (picky colleges won't accept Calc credits.. UM, UA, HU) and eventually I even taught Calculus. Texts like this are the reason why people hate math. The examples are nothing like the practice questions, the warm up (early questions) have very complex answers and the text itself overuses mathematical jargon to further complicate things. Even the equation and trig reference charts are crap. Calculus is designed as a basis for higher level math. If you make it ugly and confusing from the beginning, it spawns entire classes of students that have a weak foundation and end up more confused and frustrated later on. When the semester ended, my copy sat in the fireplace. At least it was useful for keeping warm, because it certainly was no good at teaching math.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the Money
We all know the answers in the back of a math textbook aren't always useful if you can't figure out how they got them. This book is the solutions manual and provides a step-by-step process of solution.Worth the money for upper level calc.
