The molecular revolution is upon us! For those who expect to be part of what's happening in the 21st century, the impact of molecular genetics research should not be underestimated. The authors present a simple and fun approach to the topic of molecular biology.

Written primarily for the science student, but suitable for the non-scientist, this book will give the reader a solid understanding of the fundamentals and tools of molecular biology. The book also details how this rapidly advancing field has and will continue to have an impact on health, law, agriculture, biotechnology and our understanding of the origin of the species. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars decent
I'm still in search of the very basic explanations of all sciences to keep as reference materials for when I start teaching general science to Highschoolers.Although molecular biology can be considered difficult for most students, this book does a pretty good job explaining the material. But for harder concepts,it can still be quite challenging.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cant' get enough of it !!
This beats the pants off those 'for dummy' books, including the one on biochemistry. I particularly like how the author has a sustained span of attention, where each new concept depends on the previous ones even as the chapters accumulate. Other authors tend to drop names then hurry off, giving cursory 1-liner to complicated concepts without taking the time to build them up systematically. I also like the use of margin for details so you don't wander off the main concepts. This is very effective. I wish web pages are like this, as we tend to eventually wander way off the track, including wikipedia. This book reminds me a lot of the Feynman lecture series, maybe good enough for college, high school students, non-biology experts from other fields, and logical lay people. Speaking of logical, the cover may trigger FOX news fans to call this book communist or nazi inspired though, just kidding.

5-0 out of 5 stars 4th edition is out ????

I saw the 4th edition yesterday on the rack at my local bookstore. Can anyone (possibly the author?) list here what is new and updated?

3rd Edition: A great book because everything is presented for someone who wants to catch up, review, and basically find out what all the talk is concerning Molecular Biology. While the presentation starts with the basics, you get as much detail/depth as you want.

The science news in the NY Times, the CNBC reports on pharmaceutical discoveries, and CDC releases on the Flu virus drove me to get a better handle on what's going on and this book does a great job helping me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
This is one of the best books I've read so far. The authors of this book do a great job at making it interesting to read. It has a good amount of humor in it and is worded so that anybody can understand it unlike other lame textbooks where you have to read the text 5 times or so to understand what they're trying to say. This is definitely a great textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Made easy!
I ordered this book to help me with a cell biology course in which the professor kept referring to molecular biology techniques. The book was very helpful.I wish I had ordered it earlier in the semester. ... Read more

Product Description
This course is designed to be the students first high school science course. It is recommended that the student take this course during the same year that he or she is taking Algebra 1. Exploring Creation With Biology is a college-prep biology course that provides a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general biology. Heavily emphasizing the vocabulary of biology, it provides the student with a strong background in the scientific method, the five-kingdom classification scheme, microscopy, biochemistry, cellular biology, molecular and Mendelian genetics, evolution, dissection, and ecosystems. It also provides a complete survey of the five kingdoms in Creation. Please note that this course does not contain a discussion of human anatomy and physiology. Most college biology professors do not consider it to be a part of a solid, college-prep biology course. Human anatomy and physiology is such a detailed subject that it merits an entire high school course (Please see Human Body, Fearfully and Wonderfully Made). Students who take and understand this course will be very well-prepared for a tough university biology course. This is a 2-volume set. The first book, hardbound, is the student text, which contains all student material, on-your-own questions and solutions, laboratory exercises, and chapter study guides. Color illustrations and diagrams. The second book, softbound, is the solutions and tests manual, which contains answers to chapter study guides, tests, and test solutions. B amp W. 1-0 out of 5 stars Not a science book
The title concisely summarizes that this is NOT a science textbook. The book explores the world through the eye of a creationist and in doing so bends facts to fit stories. In doing so, real scientific data are misrepresented, ignored, and twisted to meet the authors' and other creationists' view of the world. I hope this is unintentional, but is it better to be ignorant of biology and attempt to write a biology textbook that accurately teaches our young folks or to falsify scientific data and theories to promote your own opinion?

This book is NOT a science book. It should only be used to teach religion and only then to instruct students on how to warp and compromise science to meet personal beliefs.

I won't comment on all of the other in accuracies in the book that don't seem to be tied to anything controversial. I would guess that this has to do with the authors not being biologists. See other reviews for info on this and problems of this.

If you are Christian homeschooling parent and you want a science book to teach your kids accurate biology, look into biology texts selected for your local public schools. If you are okay with what is written above, you should consider that you are doing a disservice to your children. If for no other reason, you should give your students the facts so that they know both sides of the evolution/creation debate so that they have a better ability to make decisions for themselves and to speak on behalf of their beliefs if another student challenges them.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Written by Experts
Neither author appears to be expert in the field on which they are writing. Marilyn F. Durnell appears to have no advanced degree, and Dr. Wile's degree and experience are in nuclear chemistry. This is rather like having an expert chef tell you how to fix your transmission.

For one example of where this lack of knowledge takes the book astray, consider its distinction between "microevolution" and "macroevolution" (something that no actual biologist recognizes today):

Quoting from the book: "Macroevolution ... assumes that a given life form has an unlimited ability to change. This means that some process must exist to add information to the creature's genetic code. After all, a creature's ability to change is limited by the information in the genetic code. There are only a certain number of genes and alleles of those genes. There is therefore only a certain number of possible variations in genotype and therefore a limited number of possible phenotypes. Thus, in order to get an unlimited amount of change, a creature must find a way to add genes and alleles to its genetic code!"

This quote is so full of errors it is hard to tell where to begin.
* This "explanation" incorrectly assumes that to changing a genetic code you need to add something. Little could be farther from the truth; it is like saying to change the order of cards in a deck, you need to add a card. Someone should tell Dr. Wile about "shuffling."
* It's not necessary to have an "unlimited ability to change" to have some limited ability to change.
* You can have a huge number of species within a limited number of variations in genotype. This of it as the order of cards in a deck; you can have them ordered by number or by suit; the resulting appearance will be quite different but there won't be any new cards. Likewise, you can reorder the elements of the genotype and get very different phenotypes without adding anything.
* And of course you actually *can* get new stuff in genes, by way of mutation.

One could go on about epistasis and stuff but the basic point is: if you want to learn biology, don't see this book; go see a book written by a biologist or two. Teaching children is serious business, and should not be put into the hands of authors who do not know their subject.

1-0 out of 5 stars Let your kid's learn real science.
Stop contributing to bad science people. This national phenomena has got to stop. Of course real science is hard, science isn't supposed to be easy and casting the "Goddoneit" stone for your child sets them on a path of apathy toward scientific literacy they may not return from.

If you are a real Christian then you will have no problem with teaching your kids real biology which describes God's creation. Real Christians shouldn't be purchasing books like this, which have literally-- lies written in them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Biology book!
We have used 5 of the J. Wile Science books and really like them. This first edition in Biology is very similar to the second edition and much more "cost effective" for our family.
If you like something that is written in a conversational style and is very readable for young people but, still quite challenging, you will enjoy this book. Good experiments, concise lab notation sheets, challenging module questions, and tests. Consistent format throughout all the J. Wile books.
Very well thought out system. We are on our 4th student in this book! Good ACT scores are a bonus!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Standard for Homeschool Science
I consider all of the high school level Apologia texts to be the standard for homeschool science curriculum. They are thorough, the experiments totally doable at home, the test/solution manual makes testing simple. The audio book is indispensible to my dyslexic child who hopes to go into veterinary medicine.I recommend this series to all my friends. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Updated Enough Even Though It's An Old Edition
I'm reading this book for my own education, not for a class.

It is quite comprehensive and easy to understand. It even includes a chapter about chemistry to refresh your memory if you're a little bit weak on chemistry. There's 2 newer editions of this book, but this edition appears to be adequate. It's not that old, and I'm assuming that introductory biology hasn't changed that much.

If you need this book for a class, you might want to by a newer edition. If you need the book for your own use, you might as well buy the old version cheap.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great For The Price
This was a great deal and find. The book came in the condition that it was described. It was very reasonably priced. The shipping time was quick. No more than a week after I ordered it. Overall, this was a very good deal.

5-0 out of 5 stars BIOLOGY
Anyone aspiring to enlightenment must be cognitively aware of the contents of this book.It remains timely, though the accumulation of epigenomic knowledge leaves an ever-increasinggap in its currency. The illustrations are excellent, and support the motivation to learn.

The book was in very good shape upon arrival, no damage at all.The price was very good compared to book stores I check on.Delivery was within stated date.I am very pleased with the service.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best textbook for biology...
Biology Today and Tomorrow with Physiology by Starr and Evers is visually attractive, but the print is small and the explanations are somewhat confusing at times. They would have done much better by focusing more on the textual content instead of all the great big photos, diagrams, and animation features. The limited text means the authors had to cut some explanations down to a bare minimum and hope the student "figures" it all out in the end.
There are a lot of other better textbooks out there, but this one is OK if you want a lot of nice photos with your reading. ... Read more

Product Description

Technology is a process and a body of knowledge as much as a collection of artifacts. Biology is no different—and we are just beginning to comprehend the challenges inherent in the next stage of biology as a human technology. It is this critical moment, with its wide-ranging implications, that Robert Carlson considers in Biology Is Technology. He offers a uniquely informed perspective on the endeavors that contribute to current progress in this area—the science of biological systems and the technology used to manipulate them.

In a number of case studies, Carlson demonstrates that the development of new mathematical, computational, and laboratory tools will facilitate the engineering of biological artifacts—up to and including organisms and ecosystems. Exploring how this will happen, with reference to past technological advances, he explains how objects are constructed virtually, tested using sophisticated mathematical models, and finally constructed in the real world.

Such rapid increases in the power, availability, and application of biotechnology raise obvious questions about who gets to use it, and to what end. Carlson’s thoughtful analysis offers rare insight into our choices about how to develop biological technologies and how these choices will determine the pace and effectiveness of innovation as a public good.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first of the small-scale biotech company books.
Book was review of recent adventures in open-source and small scale biotechnology. If you haven't been reading the scholarly literature on devices and breakthroughs, I can think of no better crash course.

From Keasling's entire engineered metabolic pathways to iGEM to Amyris's new fuel producing bacteria, the author has an excellent and informed perspective on the breakthroughs that are worth thinking about.

The author also describes in detail the difficult morass of patent and copyright law concerning biotechnology. His description of CAMBIA's "walled garden" is better than any I have read, even in books exclusively about open-source biotechnology. (Although there is currently only one, Biobazaar).

His description of garage biotechnology is sparse, mainly due to the above morass, and it would have been nice to have more details on the LavaAmp, this author's most recent work, which is a very cheap, reusable PCR device.

This book goes by fast, and is a must read for anyone looking to start or invest in a small biotechnology company, or anyone who wants to do it themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Excellent survey of recent developments AND a thorough argument that openness contributes more to our safety from future attacks and accidents than trying to restrict knowledge and materials could. Not quite up to date, as he wrote in the Afterword, "everyone in the field is running so fast that it is impossible to keep up", but more so than any other book I have found. Most of the detailed discussion of the actual technology is up to about 2 years ago.A good discussion of the benefits and problems of patents as they apply to biotechnology (and to any field where many patents may apply to a single product (patent thickets)). Surprisingly readable for the amount of information included. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I had it in college
This dictionary has been extremely helpful for my continued study in biology.I've got a medical dictionary as well but this one covers the biological words that I have trouble finding elsewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not that good
Even though it is an Oxford Dictionary, the dictionary as such is not that good. The definitions are not too bad, but it is lacking of a lot of terms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential...
...for anyone who is interested in biology. To uses it you need some prerequisite knowledge (so the book isn't "watered down" with "faux science" factoids), but not much (making it highly accessible to the general public). If you want to take your understanding of biological science to the next level, buy this right now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biology dictionary
Our high school age daughter is in honors biology. This dictionary has really improved her grades by giving her alternate definitions/explanations of biology terms/concepts. A great resource!

5-0 out of 5 stars Maintain that resting potential, now!
The question was: what (or whatever) maintains the resting membrane potential nowadays! I always thought that it was the sodium pump (or Na K ATPase etc.). Recently, I heard: No, it is not the sodium pump that maintains the resting potential. So I checked both the Oxford and the Penguin Dictionaries of Biology. Oxford says that the resting potential is maintained by the sodium pump; however, the Penguin says it is the leaky potassium channels, and sodium pump plays a slight role. Well, it is one of those academic debates, it would seem--which really mean nothing--because nothing is at stake! The debate is from confusing maintenance, recovery, and repair--perhaps. Is it the resting potential (a thing being maintained) or is it the repolarization after a depolarization (a thing in recovery) that we are talking about? Is maintenance still maintenance if you spend energy in extruding the smaller atoms out--well: a running car can be maintained only by spending money? Perhaps, after all, it is only the usual confusion of the frogs in a well: they can only see the stars in their own horizons. The whole biological process has several components, and to know which is the one--well, just take one out and see if the process holds and functions. Which brick is the most important in a wall? Clearly, the truth is never simple, and possibly there is no such thing as the truth. Things evolve using all of the components--and are what they are. So, I guess it is always the context and it is always relative: point of view etc. There is no simple correct answer because the question is incorrectly formulated--without the necessary context. What is more important in the running of a car: the engine or the gas? So get both the Oxford and Penguin--they complement, and both are useful when viewed and understood in the right context: neither can replace the textbook; and no textbook replaces all the source materials--but you need to start somewhere. For a rich fantasy life read Ayul Zamir's Intern Beth. Now, whatever maintains that resting membrane potential! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review of college biology
I previously have completed undergraduate and graduate biology courses. I bought this as a refresher. This is really an excellent, concise review of college level biology. This is not your typical "eat your spinach" college level text.Aside from clearly outlining key core concepts, the book is sprinkled with intriguing tidbits about historical scientific personalities and events, along with strange but fascinating scientific facts. The book is well organized, the key points are clearly summarized and reiterated, and the authors enthusiasm for the material really shines through. Overall the style and format kept my interest focused. 1-0 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes to use as a study guide
I noticed 3 mistakes within the first few pages of chapter one. If the author doesn't know an ester linkage should have a double bond to oxygen, doesn't know that the chemical formula for an unsaturated fatty acid is not the same as for a saturated fatty acid, and thinks that carbon can have 5 bonds, then I don't feel comfortable using this book as a study guide for more advanced topics. I wouldn't buy this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better than Princeton Review but still not enough
A bit better than the PR guide, at least the paper is of higher quality. More topics are covered in more details, but there are still things missing. And beware, some of the details in this book may not be correct. The best thing to prepare for your GRE biology is to use this book to determine what materials you need to know for the exam, and study the equivalent topics in your Campbell (or any intro. Biology textbook)

3-0 out of 5 stars Sloppy, but can be useful
I bought this book to study for the 2009 GRE, which I just took. The book is very light on detail, and very sloppy throughout -- you probably saw better diagrams and explanations on the home-made handouts you got from any of your professors. It certainly isn't up to the standard of a good textbook. All the way through, there are inaccuracies and errors.

However, it does provide a crude sort of overview of what topics are on the test. It's slightly more useful than the official list of topics from ETS, in that you think you might know about a particular topic, but when you read the review section you'll find that you've never heard of certain subtopics. My advice would be to skim it, reviewing the stuff you know, and noting which areas you need to learn more about.DON'T try to learn new material from this review guide.Instead, go pick up a GOOD college intro bio textbook, and learn as much as you can from that over a few weeks.Or if you're really ambitious, and have several months, go to the intermediate textbooks.

The single (!) practice test is also kind of infuriating -- full of sloppy questions and outright errors. And it doesn't give you any feedback about how well you do -- you might freak out after only scoring 75% on the practice test, but if you then take the official practice test from ETS, you'll find that a 75% actually translates to a damn good score -- somewhere around 90th percentile.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent but needs revision.
This book provides a decent look at most of the areas that are emphasized on the Biology Subject Test. However, I found inaccuracies in some very basic concepts, so double-check what it tells you with other sources. The book is also poorly written both in terms of grammar/syntax and explaining concepts clearly. Other reviewers recommend purchasing the Campbell Biology text instead of this guide, and that is a good idea if you can determine which concepts will be useful for the GRE and how many details you will be expected to know. Campbell is so detailed that it would be easy to become overwhelmed and to spend too much time studying unnecessary concepts or facts. I studied using both books and found that I could determine what was important with the Kaplan Guide and then learn those topics properly with Campbell.

5-0 out of 5 stars kc
It works as long as you have enough time to study don't think that the book alone will help. But it early enough to read and review to take practice tests. It is an excellent tudor. ... Read more

Product Description
Biology is a comprehensive introductory biology textbook for non-majors or mixed-majors courses that covers biology in a traditional order from the structure and function of the cell to the organization of the biosphere. The book, which centers on the evolution and diversity of organisms, is appropriate for a one- or two-semester course.

It's no wonder that Sylvia Mader's Biology continues to be a text that's appreciated as much by instructors as it is by the students who use it. The ninth edition is the epitome of Mader's expertise: Its concise, precise writing uses an economy of words to present the material as succinctly and clearly as possible, thereby enabling students -- even non-majors -- to understand the concepts without necessarily asking the instructor to explain further. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Biology Review
The book was in great shape and it was shipped very quickly.Great service from the provider!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete biology
The book has many strengths but complicated ideas are not addressed well.Atoms and ions are one example.Unless the student already has a strong background in Chemistry the book does not explain their importance or give clear definition. What is the charge of each.)The section on organelles is one of the better explanations of their roles I have seen.
If you are a teacher using the test generator be careful. Do not expect much in the numbers of questions.Several catagories have no questions at all. Even the accuracy of the answers is poor. (Quite a few multiple choice questions havethe same answer multiple times in the same question.)You also cannot eliminate or modify this question. I tried and the progam said I could not eliminate or modify it. Nowicki should be embarassed.

“An accomplished and superior novelist” (Statesman Journal) delivers a bittersweet book about a woman’s midlife crisis that asks: How does a good girl know when to finally let herself be bad?

She heads north—with no destination and little money— stopping only when her car breaks down in Seattle. She takes a job at the offbeat Coffee Shop at the Center of the Universe, where she’ll experience a terrifying but invigorating freedom, and meet someone she’ll come to love: the new Mira. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not "Eating Heaven"
I devoured "Eating Heaven" and was looking forward to the author's next book. The writing is the same but the passion, love, sadness, joy and humor are not. I struggled to get through this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Love and Biology at the Center of the Universe

After reading and completely enjoying "Eating Heaven", I was very disappointed with the never ending details of Mira's sex life---enough is enough.I feel I would have owed an apology to anyone I might have recommended the book to thinking it was as well written as Eating Heaven.I will not purchase any more of her books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved It!!!
Once I started reading this book I could not put it down!! It's the perfect mix of life...all the ups, downs and everything in the middle.

4-0 out of 5 stars Go there!
I've read Riding with the Queen, Eating Heaven, and Love & Biology, and of the three, Love & Biology is my favorite.

Like a couple of the other reviewers I asked myself, Is Love & Biology chick lit? If so, what makes it chick lit? And if it is chick lit, can I still enjoy it?

My least judgmental idea about chick lit is that it refers to any narrative in which the female protagonist is the only one whose thoughts are disclosed to us. By that standard, Jane Eyre is chick lit. Also by that standard, there is logically a parallel "guy" lit, in which the male protagonist is the only one whose thought are disclosed to us. Famous examples would be The Catcher in the Rye, Lolita, and The Red Badge of Courage.

But I think chick lit has another limitation. It's not just that the female protagonist is the only one whose mind we enter, it's also that the author is implicitly planning for her to survive adversity. Readers are expected not only to root for the protagonist but to dislike her adversaries. For this to happen, the protagonist has to be a person the reader can identify with - someone whose faults are understandable and forgivable. And the adversaries have to be depicted in ways that make them easy to dislike. The Devil Wears Prada is a perfect example.

When I try to think of the equivalent in books with male protagonists, I come up short, unless they are young adult novels such as the Harry Potter books. Or the James Bond novels.

Seen this way, chick lit is one of the varieties of literature "lite." And Love & Biology qualifies (so do the author's two earlier novels). But guess what? I thoroughly enjoyed it. I recognized the characters, I enjoyed the wit, I loved the small Oregon coastal town that Mira runs from, I loved the Seattle neighborhood she runs to -- both are vividly drawn. On the chick lit side, I rooted for Mira and her loyal friend Lannie, I got annoyed with her daughter Thea (whose thoughts, oops, we are privy to - but she's SO close to Mira she's practically a piece of her), and I boo'd Mira's enemies. Given that Mira is perimenopausal, Love & Biology is one of the most hormone-wracked books I've ever read, but Mira has the self-awareness to recognize the symptoms for what they are.

If you're open to some high-quality chick lit, I recommend Love & Biology. I'll read Shortridge's new book, When She Flew, whether it's chick lit or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling read
Jennie Shortridge has a natural writing style that pulls you in the story and leaves you wanting more at the end. We read this book in my book club and all agreed that the characters were so well drawn out, we felt as if they were friends of ours. The reality of the main character's actions and controversial decisions made the book all the more interesting. Highly recommended to any female reader. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It was great! I dont know what the one star guy's talkin about
I am studying this regents biology book over the summer before I start school in a specialized HS and this is great! I came from one of those schools where they don't teach you anything, where the students teach each other. Most people at my school never knew their three times tables yet they graduated. I was on a normal school level, but they still thought i was very smart.

The point of saying all that is that if i had no teachers, i had to teach myself, and I learned absolutely nothing on science that year in [...]! So I got the [...] science test barrons book and passed.

Since I knew people from better schools are going to compete with me now, and that i wont be "smarty pants" anymore, i brought this biology book along with other barrons regents books and studied them.

Now I'm understanding everything, and I am absolutely glad I got this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
I basically taught myself Bio (and took the SAT II and got a 800) with this book even before school began. It is pretty helpful but once again I found the older ones more helpful because the tests were harder.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not that good
Usually when you are looking for a review book, you want one that has a balance of review text and questions. This book is one of the better biology review books out there right now, but there are much better books. In various cases, this book simply states facts rather than elaborating on the actual idea in order for students to learn the material better. For example, read the chapter on biochemistry and you wil see that it doesn't bother to explain bonding in depth, or to the extent as you would in a class. For honors biology students, I would reccomend an SAT 2 book, such as Kaplan, or the "N and N Review Book," which is not for the Living environment curriculum. However, it follows the old regents syllabus, and has a source of amazing questions along with a concise review of facts, solidified with diagrams and key concepts. For Biology, I think that the only Barron's book you would want to buy is the Regents Exams and Answers booklet, which provides the real questions, as most ofyou probably know.Since the book has some review and a few questions, I had to give it 3 / 5 stars. ... Known for many years as Barron's Easy Way Series, the new editions of these popular self-teaching titles are now Barron's E-Z Series. Brand-new cover designs reflect all new page layouts, which feature extensive two-color treatment, a fresh, modern typeface, and more graphic material than ever-- charts, graphs, diagrams, instructive line illustrations, and where appropriate, amusing cartoons. Meanwhile, the quality of the books' contents remains at least as high as ever. Barron's E-Z books are self-help manuals focused to improve students' grades in a wide variety of academic and practical subjects. For most subjects, the level of difficulty ranges between high school and college-101 standards. Although primarily designed as self-teaching manuals, these books are also preferred by many teachers as classroom supplements--and for some courses, as main textbooks. E-Z books review their subjects in detail, and feature both short quizzes and longer tests with answers to help students gauge their learning progress. Subject heads and key phrases are set in a second color as an easy reference aid. Topics covered in Barron's E-Z Biology include the cell, bacteria and viruses, fungi, plants, invertebrates, chordates, Homo Sapiens, heredity, genetics and biotechnology, evolution, and ecology. ... Calculus for Biology and Medicine, Third Edition, addresses the needs of readers in the biological sciences by showing them how to use calculus to analyze natural phenomena—without compromising the rigorous presentation of the mathematics. While the table of contents aligns well with a traditional calculus text, all the concepts are presented through biological and medical applications. The text provides readers with the knowledge and skills necessary to analyze and interpret mathematical models of a diverse array of phenomena in the living world. This book is suitable for a wide audience, as all examples were chosen so that no formal training in biology is needed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is long time-coming for me....
Being a student of Biostatistics, Mathematical Epidemiology and Health Economics, this book came quite at a right time for me.
I have used Michael Spivak's Calculus for a long time, and other pure mathematics/engineering calculus books: but i always wanted a book about calculus that was tailored to the medical sciences, and yes i got it in Neuhauser's Calculus for Biology and Medicine.
However, i must say that, most people whose comments are immensely negative about this book are those who probably are lacking a rich background of mathematics, or have nothing at all, for that matter. Because if that is the case, yes, some concepts will seem difficult to grasp. But for someone like me who is already versed in precalculus, algebra and the like, and was just looking out for something more tailored to medical sciences, i find this book ideal.
So, yes, it will not answer all your questions, it will not be all-chewed up material for you just to swallow, it will need some ability and effort on your part.
But so far, it is the best reference in the market for calculus tailored to medical sciences.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lies
The condition of this book was given as new or like new, something like that, all I remember is when I read the description, it made it seem as if the book was going to be perfect. When I get the book, it's falling apart. I have to tape the entire thing with masking tape so that the corners would stop peeling and also to stop the pages from falling out of the cover. Also, there was writing on many of the pages in ink, and somebody left their notes inside. If you're gonna sell a book online, at least take your notes out....just sending people your garbage now.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Examples-Nothing Like The Practice Problems
The frustrating thing about this book is that the practice problems are absolutely nothing like the example problems. Unless you have a teacher who expands on the ideas inside of the book you will have no idea how to do the problems. Good luck, this book is frustrating. It would be better if you had an answer book for the practice problems that contained evens and odds because the book continues to teach in the practice problems. Incredibly annoying when your teacher doesn't know anything either.

3-0 out of 5 stars Required book for course
This was the required book for my daughter's college course.there are better ones out there but what can you do when the prof wants to use this one?

3-0 out of 5 stars Mostly Useful
This book was useful when reviewing the subject, but I found a few mistakes when I compared it with my college textbook, especially in the plant chapter. Overall a good general review.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good review for Praxis II Biology Content Knowledge Exam
I used this book along with the Campbell, Reese, and Mitchell Biology textbook to prepare for the Praxis II Biology Content Knowledge Exam (0235).I was able to pass the exam with an excellent score using these two resources.

This book helped me to review the key information I needed for the test. The questions in this book are about as challenging as most questions on the Praxis, although there were a few more challenging questions that I would not have gotten right if I hadn't also studied the Campbell text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fairly Thorough Book
This book is fairly thorough. Don't expect it to explain to you all the details that go into preparing or studying for a high school AP Biology course. This book is missing far too much for that sort of help. If you are looking to prepare a course for AP Biology (as I am) your best luck will be to use the late Neil Campbell's book Biology.

The quizzes in each chapter are of great use and it seems like the end quiz isn't that helpful at all since the answers are right there next to the question.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful!
I just picked this book up in anticipation of the coming year of teaching (my second year as a bio teacher) and found it very useful.I find it helps to suggest certain books to my students in the event they require reinforcement of the information in class. This book touches on the majority of my class work.I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is taking high school bio. ...
