5-0 out of 5 stars engaging entertaining & memorable
I bought this book a year ago for my 7 and 10 yr old children. They still read and study it; in fact it is open on the arm of the sofa waiting for the reader to come back as I write. The characters in the book each represent an important concept and the page reads like a bio of that character explaining the character's importance, where s/he fits into the world as a whole and finishes with a few cool facts. The pages are creative and one cannot help but keep reading to meet more of the fascinating characters and learn how they relate to one another. The series (we own several titles) has opened my children's eyes to science topics other than the ones they already liked. And because they read them over and over again, the books have deepened their knowledge and understanding of each topic.I think the method of this book is the game changer- it is FUN!

This book, and the series as a whole, has made my science reluctant 7 yr. old interested in technical topics. She realizes that science is fun, interesting, something she can do, and as fun as girly things like princesses- a big step at our house. She started with Basher's Biology because that was about cute things like animals and has since had the interest to read Physics, Astronomy, and the Periodic Table. My son read Physics and the Periodic Table first, because "those are serious topics," and has since discovered that Biology is serious and, dare I say, interesting and not gross.I am ordering three more titles today.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best science books for kids I've seen!
Age range - probably 7 to adult. It is definitely not childish so a high school student would enjoy this as a reference as much as a 7 year old that is reading with an adult.

This series of books is one of the best I've seen for sparking an interest and understanding of science. My 6 year old and I love to open the book to a random page to decide what we want to learn about that day. It provides enough information and covers the general principles so well that he is able to ask great questions I would expect from a much older child. It's allows him to acquire the necessary vocabulary for understanding videos, chapter books, and more in depth information we look up on the Internet after we've read the highlights as an introduction in one of the books in this series.I would equate it to watching School House Rock before watching a documentary so the child understands the main idea using both scientific terminology and a layman's explanation.

If I were a science teacher I would start each new unit with an overview using this book to allow the students to see how each part makes up the whole and what the main ideas are. It's a wonderful supplement to more difficult books that will allow children to learn about whatever fascinates them no matter their age or education. It would also be a great tool for older kids when studying for a test. Instead of a boring definition dense with terminology they may find hard to remember, you get an illustration that will help you remember the terms and what they relate to and a couple of paragraphs that expand on the bullet points at the top of the page. By combining scientific terminology with layman's definitions, it is much easier to understand the terminology using context instead of rote memorization.

These books never sit on a shelf in our home. They are always out where they are easy to pick up for a quick read and we often take them with us to restaurants, appointments, or anywhere waiting is involved to keep us entertained. You can cover one topic in a few minutes or a chapter or two if you have a bit more time. Each topic stands alone nicely so my son often picks it up reads a page or two throughout the day. My husband and I enjoy reading them as well and using them to answer questions.

The way topics are grouped allows one to see how everything is interconnected without being overwhelming, it's a very logical progression. Each topic is covered by 2 pages; the first lists the primary "job" of the system being discussed and the second has a cartoon drawing of the system. I would equate it to superhero trading cards with a bit more in depth information.

The pictures make each topic easier to remember and relate to and topics are grouped by function. Chapter 3 is Body Parts: the heart, red blood cell, B Cell (white blood cells aka B lymphocyte), T Cell, lungs, skeleton, muscle, brain, nervous system, etc. By making a blood cell a character with a job and describing the way he works with the lungs or another type of cell, the author has made complex and hard to imagine concepts "more real" and very accessible for those without much of a background in science.

Right now our favorites are Biology and Rocks & Minerals. I usually use the book on Physics when I am trying to explain tough concepts (for a 6 yr old) that are hard to put into words he can understand. Gravity, acceleration, friction, mass, energy, atoms, or force are all concepts I had a tough time explaining using vocabulary he could really grasp.

These books have sparked so many interesting conversations, helped with school projects (yes, they have projects in Kindergarten these days), and made watching the Discovery Channel so much more interesting to him because he understands key concepts and terminology. If he starts losing interest in something I know he would normally love because it's a bit dense with geek-speak, we just pause the TV and read a few pages in the related book, after a few minutes of reading he's asking questions and pointing out related facts he's learned from the book. The books definitely make science fun, accessible, and much more meaningful. It's made my son feel smart and capable which has drastically increased his confidence and made him enjoy school so much more.

Many of the books come with a free poster.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun introduction to Biology
This is a good introduction to Biology and it's terms. But, it just goes into very limited detail for explanations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Analogies and metaphors make rudimentary concepts stick
I highly recommend this book for any elementary aged child. It is not as thorough as a text or even a typical non-fiction book, but it introduces many basic ideas in a way that children will remember. I wasn't so sure about a science book with cartoons, but the first person text sold me. My daughter had an instant connection with the characters in the book, giving me confidence that she will remember them when she is old enough to learn about them in a more complex academic setting.

Topics include the building blocks of life, classification of organisms, body parts, and parts of green shoots. I am giving this four stars instead of five because I feel like more thought could have been given to the organization of the book. Perhaps the main categories are too broad. For example, there are entries for the cell, mitochondria, DNA, and RNA, but not other cell parts such as the nucleus, cell walls/membranes, vacuoles, and so on.

Overall, this is an entertaining and informative book well suited for children aged 6 to 12.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful series, and Biology is a great addition to the series.
My 6-y-o son adores this series and this title has become a special favorite.A previous reviewer criticized the book; indeed, I do not disagree that readers capable of accessing academic texts at the high school level may find this series less than educational. However, this series fills a unique niche of making science fun for visual learners -- and perhaps most importantly, for learners who cannot (like my son, who has autism) yet access such topics without the lure of interesting graphic art and short, easily-recalled descriptions.

Other titles (like The Periodic Table) do not suffer from such criticism as the Pokemon-like illustrations may indeed prove a memory aid even for facile readers.

This book and its sister volumes are a tremendous value for young readers as well as adults who would like to encourage exploration in science themes as well as help de-mystify often out-of-reach concepts for those readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Received very quickly!
We were required to purshase this for our Bio class. It came very quickly, so great customer service. Unfortunately, I easily could of gotten away with not buying a book at all. I learned to wait to see if books are really necessary for certain classes! Seemed like a good book though!

2-0 out of 5 stars Overkill for "Intro" to biology courses
I just stumbled across this textbook today as I was reorganizing my stuff, and I it gave me some bad flashbacks! This is a very, very comprehensive book, but that can be a problem in certain situations.

A couple years ago, I decided to make a drastic career change that required me to take a lot of prerequisite courses. The first class I took was Intro to Cell/ Molecular Biology. Many students in the class were taking this course as one of their first science courses.

To get straight to the point: This book is way, way, way overkill for an "intro" class. First of all, it's much too big and expensive. There's no way a class will ever get through the entire thing in one semester. It's just too big and expensive for the purposes of intro Biology.

One undeniable thing about this book is that it contains A LOT of information and A LOT of detail. BUT, here's the thing: It's just too much detail for an intro course. I ended up learning a lot, but it was a lot harder than it needed to be. Since then, I've take several higher level courses. That's how I know that the book isn't well suited for intro classes.

The MAIN problem I have with this book is the language. The verbiage is as clear as mud. There's little attempt at simplifying concepts and language. It seems as if these authors went out of their way to sound really, really smart! I fancy myself as having good reading comprehension, but reading this book was like torture to me.

I'm not sure who the intended audience was supposed to be for this textbook, but the language seems to be geared more towards higher level students. The language is not conducive to learning for someone who has little background. I've read a lot of textbooks, and this was the only one that actually made me feel stupid!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased
I was very pleased with the condition that my book was in and on the timely mannor of arrival.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Service from a Horrible Company
Don't shop with this company they mislist books and don't care about customers' needs. They intentionally will ship you the wrong book with a revised invioce to convince you it was your mistake, thankfully since amazon logs the transaction as well you will be able to prove yourself but they aren't going to care.I ordered an 8th ed Biology txtbook by Raven, etc, this company sent me the a Biology with Physiology Life on Earth txtbook.I understand mistakes happen but the company sent me an invoice with package stating that was the book I ordered thankfully I ordered through them from Amazon and the original invoice was saved by Amazon. What this tells me is that someone didn't just ship me the wrong product by mistake they shipped it to me and tried to make it look like it wasn't the wrong product. When I contacted the company they refused to do anything until I returned the book, so I did nothing wrong, they already have my money but I have no product and now they want me to pay more to ship them their item back even though they can already see and admitted I ordered the right book and received the wrong one from the invoices. When I told the company that was unacceptable, they immediately shifted the blame to amazon stating that Amazon listed the wrong product and still refused to do anything.I had to call Amazon and explain all of this to them only to get my money back without spending anymore to do so.

3-0 out of 5 stars a nice addition to your studies

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I have read similar books on this topic, and this one is by far the best. It explains everything very well, and makes biology seem much easier. I believe that anyone can excel in science, if they want to and try hard enough. I would highly recommend this book for students who want to improve their grades in biology.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent introduction
This book is written by an excellent teacher, with clear explanations. An excellent supplement to a course on this difficult topic. Most texts in this area are highly technical, and this book can help orient the reader and resolve a lot of difficulties. I would love to take the course fromthe author, who shows enthusiasm and and a great capacity to communicate.

5-0 out of 5 stars helped me ace my final!
This book put complicated concepts into understandable ideas and helped me ace my oral final!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very clear explanation of a very complex subject
This book did just what I had hoped it would do.It took a very complex subject and explained it in as simple terms as possible.I've never had a formal course in biology, but I had watched all the lectures in an MIT Open Courseware course on the subject that had left me confused about a number of things.Of course, this book is not as comprehensive as a full course, but it did clarify a number of things for me. Many of the illustrations are much better than in the textbook that the MIT course was based on.Near the end of the book the author began giving specific study tips -- what things a student needs to be familiar with and what things they need to have down cold. In fact, the last chapter is entitled "Ten Ways to Improve Your Grade."I thought this a little strange, because the introduction does not mention this aspect of the book.It is done unobtrusively, so it shouldn't lessen a non-student's enjoyment of the book.I mention it because it might be a big plus to some prospective readers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Review Book
This is a fantastic self-study college level biology for those of us who have not cracked open a biology text in years. The end chapter tests help it gel all the more.If you are entering college and want to do better or want to clep out, this is the book for you.I wanted to bone up for my life science certification test for secondary teachers here in Texas. This book made it much easier to tackle this subject some twenty years later.

I received this book in a timely manner and in perfect condition. The price was right as well.I highly recommend this seller for these kind of self-help books.

4-0 out of 5 stars biology made simple!!!
My uncle is the author of this book, and he gave me a copy, and it helped me a whole hell of a lot in my Biology class! It cut things down right to the point and the vocab words with the quizzes were actually fun to do! I love this book!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to learn, great reference for college biology
I found this book to help me to clarify the concepts learned in my biology textbook.Cell biology, Evolution, Origin of Life and Animal Physiology were explained with simple language. It was actually more enjoyable to read then my textbook. What I really found outstanding was the following which I got on amazon--
The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations (Volume 1 isbn;1933023007, Volume 2 isbn; 1933023015, Volume 3 isbn; 1933023023)
These 3 study guides had similar questions to my college biology exams.Well worth the investment because it made my studying much more effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Biology Book Ever Written
For the money you can't beat Steven Daniel Garber's biology book, "Biology: A Self-Teaching Guide."He has done what virtually no one has ever been able to do.Explain biology in clear, succinct, beautiful brushstrokes that actually get each and every important concept and term across to both the casual reader and the frantic student trying to cram before the next exam.Garber has a knack for telling a story.Any story.Be it about insect blood or about impulses traveling down a nerve cell.He only says what the reader must know.No frills. But he always says it beautifully. In a manner that actually makes this book hard to put down. Now tell me the same thing about another biology book in the history of the world.I'll bet you can't.He's the best technical writer ever. And I mean ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
As a visual learner, this purchase has been a life saver. Using it in addition to my Biology book has been a great way to help me retain so much more information than I feel I would have with out it. It is very descriptive and easy to follow. The best coloring book on the market for any Biology student!

5-0 out of 5 stars Homeschooling Project
Hi, I use this book to introduce biology to my kids (9 and 11 yrs) one afternoon a week. I make three copies of the plates, we spend time together colouring, while I read and ask questions regarding the information. The kids discuss and contemplate, ask questions, make faces.. Then we take our coloured copies and paste them onto coloured cardstock. It makes for great lapbooks.I don't care if it's highschool or collegiate level. It's just meant as an introduction and a way to spend time together.I give it 4 stars for the colouring book idea, well written and thoughtful paraphrasing, plus 1 star for me and all those visual thinkers that learn from this type of educational material.

5-0 out of 5 stars The biology coloring book
The book was very helpful. Most of my exams came from this book which was open book test Thanks alot. Cathy

5-0 out of 5 stars Biology Teacher
I bought this book to suppliment the materials I present in my freshman HS Biology class. I already use the Botany and Zoology books in my Botany/Zoology course. The quality of the books is excellent. Specifically, the slides on Meiosis did a good job tracking each individual chromatid into its respective gamete. Perhaps the most useful is the slide that is depicted on the cover - the animal cell. Looking online for a decent animal cell depiction turns up some pretty sorry examples, far inferior to those found in this book. In addition to excellent drawings, the explanations that accompany each are very good.

I highly recomend this book to anyone studying or teaching Biology at any level.

4-0 out of 5 stars great for undergraduate study
I bought this book recently and I love it. I think this would be a great supplement to a General Biology course, but is too detailed for regular use in a high school biology course, with the exception of AP. I think it is a little too detailed for a high school bio class, although it covers everything that I was introduced to in my Bio 110 course.

A slight caution--many people may see the title and bright cover thinking this would be a 'fun' way to learn or a great 'fun' gift to someone interested in science. In reality, it's set up like a textbook. It's meant to be a serious aide to someone learning biology. In that sense, it's a great tool, but this isn't like the coloring books we used as kids! So don't be misled.

For those of you looking for a supplement to a high school class, perhaps the "Biology Coloring WORKBOOK" would be a better choice. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Brief and out dated
This little biology book was good a few years ago; now the information is out dated for current tests. It is also too brief for use as a study guide alone.Time to but this one in the archives.

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty decent
I used this book to study for the Praxis Biology Content Knowledge test. This is a good little book in many respects. It explains some things well and acts as a nice guide to jog your memory and/or point out what you need to review. Unfortunately, it explains a lot of things rather poorly and lacks a lot of diagrams and flow-charts that would make concepts easier to understand. I had to go back to my class notes for those.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Praxis Biology exam study
I disagree with the prior comment; this QuickReview was terrific preparation for the Praxis Biology exams. It will not teach you biology -- presumably that was learned elsewhere and why it is called a "review" -- but it is a great refresher, and it is hard to imagine not passing the exams if you understand what is written here.Four stars because it needs to be updated; the human genome was not yet sequenced when this was published nine years ago. Also some updated taxonomic classifications are needed. The only other thing that might be helpful for the exam would be the flash cards but I did not try them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad deal
I bought this book to prepare for the Praxis exam. I found that after reading through it twice and doing all of the review questions I acquired a fairly deep grasp of the basics. I supplemented it with readings from Kimballs Biology pages on the web. Although I have yet to learn whether I passed or failed, I feel that I did the best I could by buying this book and studying it though roughly. Like chicken soup for a fever, it doesn't hurt.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good general over view; lacks details.
I must agree with some of the other reviews -- this text is good for someone who wants a refresher or who only needs to know some basic biology. However, I purchased it to study for the PRAXIS II Biology Content Knowledge exam. While it covered some of the topics that actually appeared on the exam, it was no where near in depth to the extent necessary for the exam. I'm not saying you shouldn't buy this, I'm just saying you shouldn't rely solely on this book to get you through (either for the Praxis OR a bio class).I thought the book was especially limited in its description of photosynthesis and the Calvin cycle. Additionally, the practice problems do not come with explanations - just an answer key.I find that I learn more when a guide explains why answers are correct or incorrect. ... Read more

I had to purchase it for a college course.I wish I did not have to buy it, but found it a little helpful but not much.It is just very time consuming. If you don't have time to work on it, and you are not required to buy it, I would say save yourself the extra cash:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great study tool!!
I purchased this book because my cell bio professor said he was going to be using it for in class work.I am a grad student majoring in cell biology and I have enjoyed both the problems book and the text that accompanies it.The layout is organized in a way that it is easy to find what your looking for, and the videos, problems and answer explanations on the CD that comes with both books (the problems book and the text book) are extremely helpful.

I would definately recommend these books to someone interested in cell biology. It is as up to date as it can be with regards to new developments in the field (things are discovered and changed almost everyday in cell biology), but the book provides extensive background information as well as detailed accounts of developments, both new and old, contributions to the field and additional resources.

Editorial Review

Product Description
The second edition retains all the beauty of the first, and it serves as an editorial model -- a guide that shows us how serious authors prepare a new version of a serious book.

The first edition was the work of seven authors, all of them outstanding scientists [note 2]. For the second edition, the team of authors has been expanded to include a science writer, Karen Hopkin, whose main responsibility (the Preface tells us) has been "to make the book clear, accessible, and fun to read."

As in the earlier edition, there is a digest of "Essential Concepts" near the end of each chapter, and the illustrations are grouped into panels that actually explain principles, structures, procedures and experiments, rather than just providing pretty distractions. Some of the material has been reordered, the coverage has been broadened to include some new findings and new methods, there is more emphasis on genetics, and there is an expanded, improved complement of questions that make students take time to think, to realize that a question often has more than one valid answer, and to recognize that alternative perspectives are available in almost any situation. All of these changes are welcome.

...There are 21 "How We Know" articles -- one in every chapter -- providing information about metabolic pathways, protein structures, replication, the genetic code, mitosis, and cancer, among other topics. These articles… [are] very important innovations....Each copy of the new edition is accompanied by a CD-ROM, and the CD-ROM is not a mere gimmick or toy. It is a valuable adjunct to the textbook, and it has two important functions. First, it carries the literature references for each chapter in the book. (The references don't appear in the book itself.) Second, the CD-ROM provides interactive illustrations, typically with voice-over narrations, that demonstrate such things as the structures of molecules, the movement of cells, and the processes of replication, translation and cell division.

What makes for a great science education is not the amassing of facts but the understanding of concepts, processes and syntheses, and the realization that all our information about nature must be subject to testing and revision. That is the kind of educational experience that students can acquire from the second edition of Essential Cell Biology.

I recommend this new edition for use in advanced high-school courses aimed at students who already have had a course in chemistry and a solid introductory course in biology. This fine book also belongs in the library of any high school that offers serious instruction in science. Teachers and librarians who did not get the first edition should look at this second edition pronto.

There is not a better introductory book. I do not have a background in Biology except what I had in High School and I can follow this.

Product Description

The Biology of Cancer is a textbook for undergraduate and graduate biology students as well as medical students studying the molecular and cellular bases of cancer. The book presents the principles of cancer biology in an organized, cogent, and in-depth manner. The clarity of writing and the lucid full-color art program make the book accessible and engaging. The information unfolds through the presentation of key experiments which give readers a sense of discovery and provides insights into the conceptual foundation underlying modern cancer biology.

The Biology of Cancer synthesizes the findings of three decades of recent cancer research and proposes a conceptual framework from which to teach about these discoveries. It provides the necessary structure, organization, and content for a course on cancer biology for advanced undergraduates and beginning doctoral students. The book is comprehensive and offers many pedagogical features to assist teaching and learning. The book includes many recent and topical references, and is intended to empower the student to move directly into the primary research literature.

The text is up-to-date and provides current information on topics such as tumor stem cells and recently introduced chemotherapeutics. State-of-the-art techniques are discussed throughout. Modern biomedical research is explored, helping readers to hone their analytical abilities and to assimilate and think clearly about complex biological processes. The Biology of Cancer provides insights into many aspects of immunology, developmental biology, and neurobiology.

The exceptional full-color art program contains many images published for the first time. The book is extensively illustrated with schematic drawings, micrographs, computer-generated models and graphs. The pieces were chosen to support and clarify the concepts, as well as to supply additional interest.

Besides its value as a textbook, The Biology of Cancer will be a useful reference for individuals working in biomedical laboratories, and for clinical professionals.

The book got here in time, and in a condition better than described. The seller was very prompt with replying messages, and what blew me away was the good luck note attached to the book.
Thanks, I really appreciate your services. I will recommend people purchase items from this seller.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, not perfect yet
This book was awaited for long. Weinberg's writing style is excellent. The book covers major topic of the molecular biology of cancer. Compared to some other comprehensivebooks on cancer, this book is focused on the molecular events in cancer, and not on particular cancer types, or similar, more clinical topics. Yet (being a cancer researcher myself) I feel that some controversies were left out. One may say that in the textbook one is to present established knowledge, however we are witnessing every day that many dogmas are overthrown. This being a 1st edition, there is still a space for improvements. However, I recommend this book for undergraduates, graduates and professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the cell biology underlying cancer
Highly recommended to me by a physician scientist colleague for an overview of the role of mitochondria in cancer. Those chapters were superb.CD with color figures from the book is great.Wish all first/second year medical students had to read this book.

Very readable serious scientific introduction for the college student/first-second year medical student/graduate student.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for undergraduates, PhD students, physician scientists
This book contains tremendous amount of information, covering history, bench works, and medicine (cancer). i believe the author spent tremendous time and effort to finish this book. it is well-organized and well-written. i strongly recommend this book to undergraduates, PhD students, and physician scientists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Great Book.

Ordered on August 10th. Got a confirmation from the seller on the same day, August 10th, and I quote from their e-mail "Your book will be sent out tomorrow and should arrive near the middle of next week." As of August 31st still no book.Numerous attempts to contact the seller-all remain unanswered. Our credit card has been charged. So we are out the money our credit card was charged, no book, and now we will spend another $150.00 at the college bookstore so my daughter will not get behind in college. Avoid this seller at all costs. We will be filing a claim as soon as Amazon will allow us to do so and will pursue this mattter by all legal means possible. What a nightmare!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
My wife went back to college and had to take Biology, this book was invaluable in helping jumpstart her to get an A+ in the class!

2-0 out of 5 stars a little too simple
so i started going on a binge of buying a lot of these types of books because i was so pleased with organic chemistry for dummies. which if you are taking organic chemistry i really recommend as a must have book. i always make sure to check the reviews first to make sure they are good, but i am always displeased.i end up wasting time i could be spending with my required textbooks from school, or resources and practice problems the instructor provided. if you are in a college level course they are often a bit too simple. such as this book.it skims over and maybe lightens up some details you might find useful, but a hardcore biology course goes into the real nooks and crannies of biology which you just cannot get from a 200 page summary book.i dont know what everyone's classes are like, but i know that your ultimate goal in a class is to be able to answer test questions and bring home those A's, and i dont believe this book provides resources to answer any of the tough questions presented in a serious college level course. also a lot of professors base their tests around the book they require.just read your required book and if it doesnt make sense read it again, and if it doesnt make sense, read it again, and if it doesnt make sense, read it again. that is my rant.

5-0 out of 5 stars ABC of Biology

4-0 out of 5 stars good reference
I purchased this book to give to a friend who is struggling in high school Biology. She and her college-age tutor say it is very useful to look up and get a different take on the material. Plus, her textbook isn't very good so this book aids the whole process of learning the material.
Her tutor told her to keep it through college too, so the tutor liked it too.

I am not sure what this is about, the contents or Amazon's service but here goes:

The book is just what it says, practice questions with excellent suggested answers, so that students can compare with their own pathetic attempts (I'm a teacher you may have guessed). It is American so not totally for the UK system - but I knew that when I bought it.I find many US books better for my students because they give such good clear answers for the struggling exam sitter.

The delivery was terrific, well within the time I was told to expect and the book was in good condition - well I expected that cos it was new!!!!!!

Product Description
Molecular Biology of the Cell is the classic in-depth text reference in cell biology. By extracting the fundamental concepts from this enormous and ever-growing field, the authors tell the story of cell biology, and create a coherent framework through which non-expert readers may approach the subject. Written in clear and concise language, and beautifully illustrated, the book is enjoyable to read, and it provides a clear sense of the excitement of modern biology. Molecular Biology of the Cell sets forth the current understanding of cell biology (completely updated as of Autumn 2001), and it explores the intriguing implications and possibilities of the great deal that remains unknown.
The hallmark features of previous editions continue in the Fourth Edition. The book is designed with a clean and open, single-column layout. The art program maintains a completely consistent format and style, and includes over 1,600 photographs, electron micrographs, and original drawings by the authors. Clear and concise concept headings introduce each section. Every chapter contains extensive references. Most important, every chapter has been subjected to a rigorous, collaborative revision process where, in addition to incorporating comments from expert reviewers, each co-author reads and reviews the other authors' prose. The result is a truly integrated work with a single authorial voice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the gold standard
What distinguishes Alberts et al.'s book from other similar texts is the level of depth based on their own accomplished research background that the authors bring to their writing. This level is reflected in short, highly information rich paragraphs that illustrate the most important concepts of molecular biology and biochemistry.

The second unique feature of this volume is its sheer comprehensiveness. Alberts et al.'s book covers an astonishing amount of territory; from basic relevant physical chemistry and thermodynamics to the most biological of topics including gene arrays and knockout mice. The chapter on cancer is marvelous and comprehensively illustrates all fundamental aspects of the disease; metastasis, breakdown in genetic machinery and signal transduction pathways, tumor growth and characteristics, diagnostic procedures, and therapies.

The third unique feature of the book should be obvious; the hundreds of lavish color illustrations dotting every page, from basic schematics to stunning electron micrographs. The illustrations have been perspicaciously chosen to demonstrate the most important features of the living cell and its contents.

In a nutshell then, this is a one stop shop for students and researchers who want to learn and relearn all the fundamentals of the molecular biology and biochemistry of the cell. ... Read more

I didn't give it 5 stars because some of the information included basic writing skills that aren't necessary for writers at this level and I thought it could be more in-depth in certain areas. Still, it's totally worth buying.

1-0 out of 5 stars Water Damage
I received the book, but there was water damage on each page on the bottom of the book. It listed the book as "LIKE NEW". I understand it is a used book, but the condition was not Like New.
