Product Description
Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble prohormones, the two major forms of which are vitamin D2 (or ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (or cholecalciferol). Vitamin D obtained from sun exposure, food, and supplements, is biologically inert and must undergo two hydroxylation reactions to be activated in the body. Calcitriol is the active form of vitamin D found in the body. Its major role is to increase the flow of calcium into the bloodstream, by promoting absorption of calcium and phosphorus from food in the intestines, and reabsorption of calcium in the kidneys. It is also necessary for bone growth and bone remodelling by osteoblasts and osteoclasts. This book examines the biochemical components of vitamin D and the nutritional benefits it offers the human body. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good
the book itself is good, but the content of the book is not so good.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but harder than the real thing
I used this as a review guide for the Biochem GRE.I'd only taken a one-summer biochem class, so I was feeling weak in that area, although confident about the rest. The book has good organization, and doesn't go too in-depth into one topic at the expense of others.

The biggest problem I had with it was that it was much harder than the real test!I was very worried that I was going to do terribly, and this made me more anxious than I should have been.In the last few days before I took the one real exam that I had, and it was much easier than the book's questions. There were much more biochem pathway trivia in the book than on the real exam.

There are some factual errors in this book, and hopefully future editions will get a little more proofreading.

4-0 out of 5 stars good
I received the product very quickly. It was tough to find a GRE book for the biochemistry subject test because there are few out there. Since there are no biochem test prep books to compare this to, I'd have to give this one a thumbs up for its straight to the point style.

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT very professional
I found many typos in this book - the carbon atom has 5 covalent bonds sticking out in the diagram, the math derivation seems not coherent, etc.

I am a little disappointed since the book was written by two PhDs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Will waste your time
I have only read the first five pages and it has obvious critical errors.I will have to abandon it for fear of learning more mis-information.

This book has probably never been edited by a scientist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Used textbook
Textbooks are very expensive to purchase new AND/OR used at the school bookstore. It was so awesome to find the organic chemistry book I needed for $110 less than the bookstore at school. The book is in great condtion. I am so happy with this purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I received my package quickly and on time. Seller communicated very well and the item was in great condition. Great person to buy from.

3-0 out of 5 stars College Textbook for Organic & Biochemistry
After using this text in an introductory organic/biochem class at a community college, I am satisfied with Chapters 1-14, but watch very carefully for many errors which are not mentioned in the publisher's error list (cf. structures of opiates [page 247]; nicotine [250], methamphetamine [251], propranolol [288], FAD [444]); the same errors appear again in the 2nd edition. In my opinion, both the writing style and the topical organization of the complex material in Chapters 15-18 can be much improved.Students found these chapters "more confusing", and our progress through these chapters was relatively slow. A major advantage for students is cost; used copies of this first edition are available on line for relatively low prices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing Scientific Objectivity and Accuracy to The Life Sciences
Dear Reader
Every living cell in the tissue of every living organism can be thought of as a microscopic or miniature polymers reactor. And nobody understands how to make a polymer better than George Odian.( I was first introduced to the name George Odian by one of my polymers and cotaings instructors at N.D.S.U. way back in 1981. His name is J. Edward Glass and he is one of the world's foremost experts in the field of extentional viscosity of high polymers)
From my experience reading George Odian's books on Chemistry has been a welcome relief from having suffered froma diet of bad chemistry books and bad chemistry teachers and professors.
I am not a Chemistry major (that's no surprise) and for years literally suffered from a fear of Chemistry. These of course are personal comments but the fact remains that it was while reading another book by Odian and Blei thatactually helped me overcome my strange aversion to this subject called Chemistry. Which really is simply another form of "Quantum Mechanics". But they ( the academics )never taught it like that because they didn't see it for its true nature.( Schrodinger on the other handdid see it)
Rather it seemed as though they( some of these other "teachers") succeeded in confounding it by trying to incorporate all kinds of "bonding" and "anti-bonding" rules.
Blei and Odian don't "beat the student up" with that. Rather they simply use the celebrated "Octet Rule" so that the student won't have to get bogged down with details that can be learned later and thus the student has more time to concentrate on the organic chemistry at hand and the relationships between the various organic groups and their resulting effect on the biopolymers. Namely the Nucleaic Acids, Carbohydrates, Lipids, and of course the Proteins.

However when I say "bringing objectivity and accuracy to the life sciences" I am talking about viewing the inner workings of a living cell in terms of what it actually is. A polymers reactor. And not to see that is not only an impediment to the advancement of medical science but a misrepresentation of what life really is.
In this book the basis is laid out for what is surely to come in the future. And that is the complete characterization of tissues in terms of their basic polymeric properties. For example "molecular weight"...now we're not just talking chemistry we're talking Physical Chemistry. And if one fails to see that one misses the "whole show".

The idea that DNA talks to theRNA (by way of the genetic code) which in turn polymerizes
protein cannot be overemphasized.(see the Central Dogma of Biology)
(also see "What is Life?" by Erwin Schrodinger 1944)
The fact that you have a person like Odian writng a book like this is simply an indicator of what is to soon be the future.
Where we human beings can arbitrarily control and modulate the polymerizations inside ourselves. What do you call that?
"Brave New World" or "No Such Thing as Terminal-The Fountain of Youth"?

Best Regards
Southern Jameson West

5-0 out of 5 stars wow, a textbook i actually like. what a miracle
I read this and understand it, which is a miracle for textbooks ESPECIALLY CHEM! ;-) It's geared mainly for people entering allied health professions, which I am not (music/botany nerd here, folks), but it's still interesting to know why all the stuff in our bodies happens. I actually had fun reading the Lipid chapter and thanks to it I was able to pose for a portrait without getting bored. :-) ... Read more

Essential reading for candidates for the MRCPath examination and similar postgraduate examinations in clinical biochemistry. The book gives an overview of the acquisition of data, as well as concentrating on clinical aspects of the subject, giving detailed coverage of all conditions where clinical biochemistry is used in diagnosis and management. In common with other diagnostic specialties clinical biochemistry now uses an increasing number of techniques involving the 'new biology': these are covered in this book. It is also increasingly common for medically qualified clinical biochemists to become involved in the clinical management of patients (eg nutritional support) and material on this will be included.

  • Significant changes to content to reflect changes in how clinical chemistry services are organised and to reflect the advent of metabolic medicine as a recognised specialty.
  • Chapter on Clinical biochemistry of nutrition to include new information on regulation of appetite and the clinical management of obesity.
  • New chapter to bring together information on inborn errors of metabolism affecting adults.
  • New chapter on clinical biochemistry of cardiovascular disease.

1-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for those who are planning to hate biochemistry
The problem with this book is not the veracity of its information but the way it is written. Some experts will probably get along with it but the neophytes will suffer with the boring, confusing, tiresome style of almost all chapters. I believe that Harper's is the great responsable for many generations of biomedical students that see biochemistry as a unappealing discipline, albeit essential. If I were a student I would buy this book only for inducing sleepiness or boredom. This is the first time ever I give a one star to a product of this site, but Harper's does deserve it. In this very same Amazon.com one can find biochemistry texts which are superb, must have and, above all, friendly to read.

1-0 out of 5 stars worse than tlephone book
Harper's biochemistry book is even worse than ordinary telephone book.

It does not contain properly built chapters. Knowledge presented in this book is too simplistic.

This is only the list of known biochemical facts without any further analysis.

This book contains too many errors in given compounds formulas, what cannot be explained by ordinary mistakes in printing.

I would recommend to use Stryer's book instead of this one.

    This book is a disaster.

2-0 out of 5 stars Biochemistry for Dummies
I am a medical school professor and am familiar with the different biochemistry textbooks.Harper's is a simplified text book that does not have the detail of depth of information one finds in the gold-standard texts of Lehninger or Stryer. There is a reason why these texts and not Harper's are much more commonly found in the undergraduate, graduate and medical school classrooms.Harper's is ok for the educated layperson or for the non-biologist who wants an overview of biochemistry.

3-0 out of 5 stars Complicated
I'm a second year med student and this is the most difficult book I have to read. No so much because of the difficulty of the subject but cause it's written in so complicated way. Also to fully understand the contents I think one must have somewhat biochemical background. Which alot of people don't have. I find myself reading more from wikipeadia then from the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars great for review
While this book may not give quite the same level of detail found in some of the more massive and expensive intro to biochem texts, it is nevertheless a valuable reference. The fundamentals are all here, in an admirably clear and concise form. That makes going back to review much easier than with the fat books. In that way, this book fills an important gap in the field of available texts. If however one comes across a particularly difficult concept, the concise explanations may leave them wanting or needing more.In fairness though, I think a lot of the fatter books have the same drawback despite their longwindedness.Afterall, biochemistry can be pretty tough no matter what book you're looking at.If you are using the book as part of a class, then theoretically that is why there is an instructor, lectures and tutorial sessions.Admittedly, and to the student's detriment, the system doesn't always work out that way.I've found the book to be excellent for review because of its brevity and clarity. This book also gets high marks for attempting to point out the clinical relevance of the material, something that cannot be said for the majority of the big textbooks. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Almost all you need to get through your undergrad studies.
I don't understand why so many science texts are overwrought and redundant. Worst of all, you end up paying premium prices for poor content, circuitous writing, and an inefficient organization of topics. The real coup de grace comes about when instructors recommend student companion texts with a sly wink and a nudge.

Fortunately, resources like the 'Color Atlas of Biochemistry' are as affordable as they are efficient and useful. It will prove to be an invaluable reference, study aid, and a more adequate companion text than those offered by the more popular publishers.

Far be it from me to suggest that you hurt your instructor's coffers by using this book as a primary source, but it would certainly be a great addition to your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars made me love biochemistry
throughout my stay in med school, I never understood why I must be subjected to all those biochemical details. I was aware, of course, that I needed to understand the basic chemical processes that affected the human body, but I couldn't find any reason why my professors would treat medical students as if they were biochem majors. Boy, was I glad when the biochemistry class was over, and I passed the darn course!
I was to meet this same course a few years ago, when I had to sit for the USMLE I. Like a sick child who must swallow a bitter tablet, I reluctantly began to study biochem. Again.
It was a very pleasant surprise that the course was really interesting. I mean, I enjoyed it as much as I did physiology (and I always loved physiology!).
I realized that I came to love biochem because of this book. The authors knew how to give you solid biochemical reasons for those familiar clinical conditions. Contrary to my previous experiences in med school, I found out that biochemistry is indeed a very interesting vourse.
The only (small) problem that you may find with this book is, it could be too detailed at times. However, it covers the USMLE topics quite well. If you have read Kaplan's materials, you'd agree that there are very many similarities. I read both.
If you want to use it for the USMLE I exam, I suggest you first read the specific topics required for the exam. Afterwards, you may then the other areas that are not vital for the exam, if you are interested, and you have the extra time.
I wish I had this book much earlier. It's really nice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good biochemistry review in outline form
This is a good review book for medical school. It offers great depth and details to the subject of biochemistry albeit it lacks the illustration and color of textbooks. The book is written in an outline form, so reading a chapter of Davidson's Biochemistry can be tedious; but then, there are those who like to study that way ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Mentally challenging but worth the journey
The priciples of physical biochemsitry have not really changed in the past few decades, so although the book has not been revised since 1985, it is still an excellent reference. The content covers topics from basicthermodynamics to techniques such as CD and x-ray diffraction.Althoughsome of the material is basic it is an ideal reference for graduate andpost-graduate level scientists exploring new areas of science. The topicsin this book are also well complimented by another similar level booktitled Binding and Linkage by J. Wyman and S. Gill. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I bought this item for a class. It came very quickly and, while not in perfect condition, was in the condition promised. The book is very thorough in describing different techniques but it is not too hard to read, especially if you have a slight background in any of the techniques (SDS-PAGE, centrifugation, etc.). My professor had us buy it partially to extend our libraries, so she likes it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biochemistry Laboratory: Modern Theory and Techniques
One of the best techniques book I have come across. Very useful for introducing students to techniques and methods in molecular biology and some analytical chemistry in a clear and concise manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biochemistry laboratory
This book is an excellent introduction and guide for both undergraduate biochemistry lab classes (which I teach) and for the research lab. It provides enough background for students to understand how a technique works, and a wealth of technical and practical information. I would recommend this book for undergraduates and new graduate students , and anyone teaching undergraduate or graduate students. My only gripe is that it does not include gas chromatography, but just about every other basicbiochemistry laboratory technique is covered. ... Read more
