3-0 out of 5 stars These people all lie
Don't misjudge my review; I'm not just some lazy kid who hates all work.I'm in the honors program at UCI studying to be a doctor. And this book isn't very good. The reading, I will grant, isn't too bad. Most of the time it's easy to follow, and sometimes it's confusing. However, the problem comes when you try to put it all to the test and do the problems at the end of the chapter. Not only does the book present problems that were not covered in the reading, but it doesn't explain the answers, either. It just gives them to you.I am forced to constantly ask a friend of mine if he knows how to get the answer they give, because the book gives no indication of how to arrive at it.It also withholds information; in one problem in chapter 5 the answer they give is only possible, ONLY possible, if chymotrypsin cleaves a protein at isoleucine (the book only gives leucine, not iso-).In the next problem, it is virtually the same thing, taking cleavage information and trying to put amino acids in the correct order. However, in this one, their answer insists that you NOT cleave at isoleucine.Otherwise you'd be wrong and wonder what you did.Of course, you'd get no explanation. If you have to get this book for a class, then fine.Good luck with the homework if you have to turn in the problems. But if you're getting it to further challenge yourself of your own accord, search around for some type of solutions manual first, because this book won't tell you how to get anything. It assumes you have a lot of background knowledge already, so I don't know where one reviewer got the notion that this is great for beginners...if you want a good book for beginners, seek out the Garrett & Grisham book.It simplifies biochemistry beyond belief compared to this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book to start Biochemistry!
Mathew's Biochemistry is an excellent book to start this difficult subject! The easy diagrams and interesting notes just keeps you wanting to learn more...Read, read and read.If only it could have a more clinical focus it would be 100% perfect. Combine it with "Harper's Biochemistry" and you will soon run A+ on scores! To die for!

5-0 out of 5 stars great book!
I am a biochemistry major at the university of the philippines.i have several biochem books on my shelf and i just recently purchased a copy of the 2000 edition (i also have the 2nd ed).the book just keeps getting better.the book really helps a lot especially when the class lecture corresponds with how the book presents the subject matter.as a biochem major, i'd say this is a pretty good way to present biochem.it makes it seem easy and fun to read.you look at the pictures and read the caption and you learn the idea in a flash.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best biochemistry book
I have not seen the 2000 edition yet, but the previous edition is very elegantly written. Compare with some other biochemistry text, this book provides another view into biochemistry. Almost (if not all) all thechapters have a special topic after the chapter text, showing you how wecan turn the dry text into useful experimental tools for solving life'sproblem, scientifically. These special topics also give us a view into thephysical chemistry world, which has become more and more important at thetime.

4-0 out of 5 stars Illustrative
It's difficult to review a book on a subject as biochemistry, when you're a student, and this is the only book I've read on the subject. This book is used by medical students at the Universty of Bergen, Norway, and as a student I find it very easy to read (if you have mind that biochemistry isnot an easy subject). The illustrations and figures in the book arehelpful, and often, you can get the essential in the text by only lookingat the figures. ... Read more

Product Description
Biochemistry Molecular Biology of Plants is a major contribution to the plant sciences literature, superbly edited by three distinguished scientists, Bob B. Buchanan, Wilhelm Gruissem, and Russell L. Jones, with contributions from more than 50 world-renowned scientists. With over 1,400 pages, 1,100 full-colour original drawings and 500 photographs this work qualifies, in the words of the Science reviewer, as:

"an essential reference for practicing plant biologists and for the increasing number of scientists from other disciplines who are entering the field of plant biology. To exploit fully the wealth of new information provided by the genome projects and to integrate the metabolic, regulatory, and signal transduction pathways of complex organisms, biologists will require a solid command of biochemistry and physiology. For this reason, the publication of Biochemistry Molecular Biology of Plants could not have come at a more opportune and auspicious time."

This book is meticulously organised and richly illustrated, useful both for teaching and for reference. The multi-authored work provides a contemporary view of its subject, including molecular biology, cell biology, and plant physiology, integrated around the themes of:

  • compartmentation
  • cell reproduction
  • energetics
  • metabolism
  • development
Read the words of the reviewer in CELL:

"The great strength of this book is that it has integrated its three major components (molecular biology, cell biology, and plant biochemistry) in each of the 24 chapters, resulting in a comprehensive analysis of a multitude of specific topics."

Who should buy this spectacular new text?

  • Plant biologists and scientists in related fields
  • Professors in departments of plant biology, plant biochemistry, plant physiology, and related fields
  • Graduate and upper-level undergraduate students of plant biology
  • Researchers in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and agribusiness industries

A CD-ROM of all illustrative matter in the book is available separately. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Biochemistry of plants & more...
This is another book you should find from a bookshelf of a sophisticated plant biologist ;)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, bad binding
The book is great, one of the best to learn everything about plant biology. Good explanations and pictures. Binding could be better, hardcover shouldn't be that expensive.... Losing some pages aleady after a few weeks.

2-0 out of 5 stars low value
I borrowed this book from a library during graduate school and found it to be very helpful in reviewing plant biochemistry. It is well written and has a fair amount of detail. The illustrations were well done and helpful. In spite of all the book has going for it however, it is outrageously expensive. In fairness, it is a fat book at nearly 1400 pages.Nevertheless the content does not justify the extremely high price tag, and I am disappointed that the publishers expect students to cough up this amount of money for a single text.

4-0 out of 5 stars love it
This book has the basis of Molecular and cell Biology that make you well armed. It has great pictures too. The biochemistry also is awesome, you'll find all the pathways you want. I even not gonna sell it after i graduate. I prefer keep it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Plant Biol. book out there
I am a PhD candidate in Plant Sciences and I work with both applied and basic researchers who work on all aspects of plant biology/agriculture etc.Everyone I work with and myself included feel that this is the best single plant biology text. It is a few years old now so some of the mol. biology will be outdated, and a couple of examples have since been proven to be different than described in the book, but this is minor. This is for the adv. undergrad or graduate student and if you are a graduate student in plant biology you should have this book-it is very expensive, but nearly every post-doc/grad student I know has a copy. Get the hardcover it will hold up better. ... Read more

    Product Description
The third edition of Concepts in Biochemistry makes the most applied and accessible biochemistry text on the market. Students are more successful with Boyer because it isn't intimidating and it makes clear the relevance of the material to their future careers. Like the first two editions, Boyer is written for students who need an introduction to the fundamental principles of biochemistry and are preparing for a career in the allied health sciences, the biological sciences, and the environmental sciences. (The text is also appropriate for use in one-semester courses developed for chemistry majors as a result of the new American Chemical Society requirements for three-credit hours of biochemistry coursework.)

The modern, student-friendly organization sets the book apart from the competition because the early placement of nucleic acids enhances the traditional coverage of protein structure and function, and metabolism. As an example, it is now possible to present metabolism in a more contemporary fashion, emphasizing gene regulation and integration.

Rod Boyer is a recently retired Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. He has a PhD from Colorado State and recently spent a sabbatical year at Nobel Prize winner Tom Cech's lab at the University of Colorado. He is on the Editorial Board for the journal, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education and has been very active in education affairs for the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. ... This book has a lot of good problems in the back of each chapter to improve understanding of the material. 2-0 out of 5 stars terrible
this book is terrible - hardly any info, almost no clinical information, no questions.go with lippincott

3-0 out of 5 stars Not A Standalone
My experience with this book was a positive one.Well as positive as studying for the boards can get anyway. This text is good for one thing, the overall picture and how the biochem of lipid, carb, and AA metabolism all fits together. This book IS NOT, I REPEAT, NOT! a standalone. However, combine this book with Qbank and First Aide and you will be reasonably prepared for the biochem questions.PROS - fast read, good overall picture of biochemical metabolismCONS - expensive, weak on some subjects ie, heme synthesis and porphyrias.Overall this is a good study aide for Step 1.

2-0 out of 5 stars In need of serious revision...
I purchased several of the high yield and brs reviews for dental boards. As far as the high yield series goes, this one is by far the worst. Most of what is in this book is really basic info, like stuff you learned in Cell Biology as an undergraduate student. It may get you through the boards, but I really doubt this alone could help achieve a high score. Either save your twenty-five bucks and use your class notes, or buy another review text...cause this one sucks!

    1-0 out of 5 stars A caring man's advice: DON'T BUY IT
This book is as unethical as reviews ever come.....Unbelievably expensive 25 USD for its value.A lot of essential very high yield materials are NOT even mentioned.A lot of low yield irrelevant materials mentioned.I dont think the author had a clue what is important. If you wanna a great high yield, get the behavioral science or neuroanatomy high yields but NEVER waste your money on this insulting "review" book.BRS biochemistry is excellent alternative if you have the time or the back of lippincotts review(at the very end)I hope this was a helpful advice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good if you need quick quick coverage.
Nicely summed up by the reviewer below. If you need a very quick-and-dirty review, this is good.I take points off due to the lack of index and some weak sections. At this point, QBank leads me to believe that this book may not cover everything I needed to know.. but good for last minute stuff, especially if you hate Biochem like myself. ... This best-selling undergraduate textbook provides an introduction to key experimental techniques from across the biosciences. It uniquely integrates the theories and practices that drive the fields of biology and medicine, comprehensively covering both the methods students will encounter in lab classes and those that underpin recent advances and discoveries. Its problem-solving approach continues with worked examples that set a challenge and then show students how the challenge is met. New to this edition are case studies, for example, that illustrate the relevance of the principles and techniques to the diagnosis and treatment of individual patients. Coverage is expanded to include a section on stem cells, chapters on immunochemical techniques and spectroscopy techniques, and additional chapters on drug discovery and development, and clinical biochemistry. Experimental design and the statistical analysis of data are emphasised throughout to ensure students are equipped to successfully plan their own experiments and examine the results obtained. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review
This is a very good review on the main techniques of biochemistry and molecular biology. Excellent for filling up those gaps that bad teachers left behind.

2-0 out of 5 stars Tons of Info
It was more than I needed or could use. I tried to contact the seller to see if I could return it, but got no response.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok as an intro, but rather irksome
I had purchased this book as part of the required books for a molecular biology techniques class in college. While I did skim through most of it at that time, I hadn't given it my full attention.

Two years later, I've sat down and read the entire book (spare 2 chapters). My reason for doing this was to brush up on what I (hopefully) already knew, expand on my knowledge, and to catch some things I'd surely completely missed.

I do not like how the chapters are written by different authors.I suppose it makes sense in light of certain folks being experts in their respective fields... but isn't this book an intro book?Shouldn't the stuff in this book be "the basics"?I noticed that the style of writing (somewhat organization of thoughts, but mostly the tone/way of talking) varied.I also found more than one topic to be repeated in detail.Oh no, not just "refer to section ___ for more info"... nope... totally repeated.

I hate the organization of the book.I feel like the chapters are out of order. The chapters also, I feel, could have been focused differently to better tackle material.

Also, while a great deal of theory is helpful, I sure wished I'd seen some basic info included for actual benchwork.I wanted to see more of typical concentrations, troubleshooting, controls, etc.Because now I just look at this book and think, hmm... the info in that book I can get for free on the internet, probably faster and more detailed.I don't want to lug that thing around to work, etc.No way.Good for class though, I suppose. At least at the end of each chapter there is a recommendations section for further reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best lab books available
I was blown away by this book. That's how good it is.

I'm a microbiology grad student working on my Ph.D. and I have referred to this book on multiple occasions. It covers almost every single type of procedure that a student would do in a life science or biochemistry laboratory. From molecular biology to PCR; from Southern blots to western blots; from electrophoresis to mass spectrometry; from cell culture to microscopy.....this book literally covers it all.Additionally, it covers all of these topics in pretty good detail. Each procedure is not only discussed in terms of how to do it, but also why it works.

Fantastic.Every life science, biochemistry, or health science student should have this as a reference book.

4-0 out of 5 stars good with an adjunct
this is a very nice book with abundant information.there are few topics which are dealt extraordinarily especially centrifugation,HPLC,electrophoresis etcetera.i have been studying this book from my graduation.initially i used to feel some difficulty with this book,so i studied biopysicaland biophysical techniques by Upadhyaya and Upadhyaya.once i got the clear idea regarding the techniques,i shifted to this book.now i feel this book is very helpful.it is highly recommendedto allbiology students. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Absolute help
I nearly did not buy this book because of the reviewer who claimed it did not contain the solutions for the text problems - but other reviewers said it did, so I took a chance and bought it. The main detraction of this guide for me is that it's easy to miss that there are worked solutions because it's the section at the back. I don't have time for the discussion questions, crossword puzzles and such BUT the worked solutions have saved me in this class.I no longer waste time wondering where I went wrong after attempting the problems. This guide for me is a must-have to accompany the text. The explanations so far have been just right for me to follow. I gave it only 4 stars because the first half is a waste for me and makes the solutions guide nearly as thick as the text!

3-0 out of 5 stars not what i thought
i thought this book would be explained solutions for the problems found in the actual textbook.its actually just a review book relating to each chapter, with new problems/ solutions/ quizzes etc. still useful, but not as correlated to the textbook as i had thought.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biochemistry
This book is very useful, though the book may not contain as many problems(e.g muitipule choices) to be solved as you think!
Anyway,I buy this book in order to prepare GRE sub-biochemistry exam.and I find it great ,not only assist you for the exam, but enhance your biochemistry knowledge as well!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased
The producted was in the condition promised by the seller.I am satisfied with the product BUT I paid extra for priority shipping and it took over a week to receive the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource

4-0 out of 5 stars A Cleverly Designed Book
Some biochemistry books proceed to describe metabolic pathways with scant reference to the physiological context in which they occur and then fill the conceptual gap by including a chapter on regulation and integration of metabolism. Not this thoughtful and cleverly designed book. From the start the authors make it clear that they are going to tell us the story in terms of one crucial unifying concept: which pathways are activated or inactivated when we eat or when we fast?

With this approach the reader never loses sight of the big picture, ie, what's going on in the body at any particular time. And then, when we do reach the chapter on integration of metabolism, most of the work has already been done for us: the chapter then operates as a useful review of what we have already been told.

The book does not miss any opportunity to make us think in terms of the big picture, and furthermore, it is never afraid of saying something more than once if it needs to. Just one example to illustrate this point: Lipoprotein lipase. Action and properties of this enzyme are detailed in the context of digestion of chylomicrons (p 497), storage of TAGs in adipocytes (p 512), integration of metabolism (p 561) and the influence of insulin levels on gene expression of the enzyme (p 564).

The early introduction of the fed and starved states is also useful in other ways. The student perceives right away what the point is of learning those endless metabolic pathways and studies them with much more enthusiasm and not just thinking that biochemistry is but an unnecessary obstacle they have to overcome to get to the more clinical stuff (at least I'd like to think so!). Inspired by this book I have organized my course in that way and I am convinced that it is the best approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, Lucid, yet encylopedic
This book is different from its contemporaries in many ways. First of all is written in a clinical approach format which is very interesting for medical students. Most of the biochemistry textbooks are dry and vast and difficult to grasp the information needed for a medico.
But the Marks helps to learn to use biochemistry in the process of Clinical Problem Solving. With a lot of diagrams and clear text it is easy understand.
The Clinical Material is presented in the form of real patients.
It is a student friendly text with which you can learn biochemistry in a funny way of solving the clinical cases.
It can be used as a main textbook for self study.
I strongly recommend the Marks for all medical students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marks Biochemistry
This books is great. If you want to leran biochemistry within a month, buy it.I think it is the best book.It is perfect for your exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Pretty Good for USMLE
Texts are not easily to follow. Diagrams and help notes scatters around pages which make readers confused. If you are preparing for Step 1, I recommend you study Lippincott Biochemistry, Board Review Series.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best biochemistry book (easy and comprehensive)
I love this book on biochemistry simply because it was the easiest to read, with diagrams and pictures even dumb people like me can read (gg).I also found that it is very comprehensive also. Some of the other titles I've read on the subject (Lippincott, Harper's) did not go into the detail of this one.Another positive note is that this is a clinical book also; giving you case studies in each chapter to test your knowledge.I can't say enough about this book and even referred it to one of my friends.Although not required in Chiropractic College (Lippincott was), it should have been the standard. ... This Student Study Guide/Solutions Manual (coauthors Patricia DePra, Trudy McKee, and James R. McKee) is an essential companion to McKee & McKee's 4th edition textbook.

In addition to the solutions to 2/3 of the end-of-chapter problems, each chapter contains a 1-page, concise outline of major concepts, additional explanations and summaries, and hints/strategies for learning the material that would benefit any student taking biochemistry.

If you're purchasing the 4th edition of McKee & McKee's biochemistry textbook, be sure to get the right study guide, as this review is also (incorrectly) listed with the 3rd edition text & study guide reviews.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing at the outset
I've just opened this book to study for an important test. In only the first few minutes I've wasted time working through the overly long, labored explanations that can't get to the point. On page 64 I found a major error that had no easy-to-find errata online: the authors reused an image from a question on page 59. The answer they gave didn't relate to the image or the explanation wasting more of my time trying to figure out where their mistake was.

If this is typical of the shoddy editing and writing in this book I would be better off using Wikipedia to study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good as a sectional review
As with other books in the pretest series, if each section is read as a whole unit, with greater focus on the answers to the questions rather than the questions themselves, it provides a solid foundation for the biochemistry shelf. In fact, the arrangement of the topics allows for better comprehension of bulky topics like biochem for which the bullet-point style of BRS is not suited.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Very Good For Genetics but has some errors
Very very good book to prepare for test questions in your class for Genetics. Excellent questions for Genetics!!! Does contain some errors.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just okay
Yes, the book did provide practice problems for each chapter, which were helpful.
Unfortunately, the book does not provide sufficient explanations for concepts.Rather, it skims through them.... frustrating, and not what I expected(Especially at that price!)
As a whole, it was not very helpful...I'll be giving mine away for free.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay text, but better medical biochem texts available.
I did my B.S. in Biochemistry and bought this book to improve my medical biochem knowledge. On the plus side this text provides an overview (shows you the forest so to speak) of many major biochemical pathways in a cartoon-like diagrammatic format. However, I agree with the previous reviewers that it's emphasis isn't quite right for medical students. I've found some errors (e.g., fig 11.13 and 25.6 have arrows that are flipped the wrong way & some of the reference ranges in Appendix I have incorrect units) so be careful. My favorite med biochem text is Principles of Medical Biochemistry by Meisenberg/Simmons (ISBN: 0323029426) and the runner-up is Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry (ISBN: 0781769604).

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Book, DON'T WASTE your money
Like other people have said, this book is not worth the money. This book puts far too much emphasis on some topics, ignores others and simply does a terrible job explaining biochemical concepts that are important in medicine. If you would like a simplified biochemistry text, choose Lippencott's or Lange's texts. This is book is too simple and frustrating.I have spoken with many students in my medical school class that agree with my assessment and do no even bother reading the chapters because they leave them confused and frustrated.Save your money!!! I wish I could give it a negative star or no stars at all!

1-0 out of 5 stars Use Lippincott's instead
This is not a very good book.Although this is a medical biochemistry book, this is inadequate for medical school. Many topics are covered in great detail when they don't need to be, while others are neglected when they should be emphasized. In short, it does not teach to the NBME biochemistry shelf exam or USMLE Step 1.Although it is the second edition, it is riddled with errors, unclear grammar, and inaccurate figures. There are also some topics where this book is just plain wrong.Who thought it would be a good idea to have a bunch of biochemists write a medical text?Get something else; anything else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hard going
This text was compulsory for our college. As a new student to biochemistry I really struggled with this book.It made easy concepts complicated. If you're planning to do a couple of years of biochem then this is the book for you.If you're after some intro stuff, invest your money into something else.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacking in detail
This book was the required book for my Medical Biochemistry class.Which was quite strange because none of the professors lectured from it, choosing instead Lehninger or Harper's.This book was so lacking in actual biochemistry that it was essentially useless for adequately covering the course material.I will admit that it does a pretty good job of covering clinical correlations, it has a lot of pretty charts, tables, figures, and pictures in multiple colors but it does not cover the material adequately.Do yourself a big favor and go with Lehninger or Harper's instead. ... Editorial Review

    Product Description
The latest edition of Biochemistry Primer for Exercise Science provides upper-level undergraduate and graduate students with an understanding of the essential concepts of biochemistry—molecular biology, basic chemistry, metabolism, and transcription regulation—in an easy-to-understand format. This text builds on the success of the previous edition by offering new topics, new organization of chapters, greater interpretation and integration of key concepts, and new and improved illustrations that clarify the content.

With its updated information based on new research and ideas from exercise science and molecular biology and its greater interpretation of biochemistry in the context of the active human, Biochemistry Primer for Exercise Science, Third Edition, is the only text of its kind in this field. Students trained in traditional exercise physiology can understand basic concepts of energy, but without the knowledge gained from this book they might lack the ability to apply these principles to everyday life.

New information and approaches in this book include the following:

Reorganized chapters give greater attention to the mechanism behind the concepts. Basic metabolic pathways and mechanisms are outlined and the role of exercise in modulating those pathways and mechanisms is addressed.

A deeper and more thorough integration of the topics adds context and aids in comprehension.

New review questions with answers are provided.

A section on oxidative stress and its implications to lifestyle and health are included.

A new section covers signal transduction that leads to changes in the expression of genes and in the amounts of specific proteins.

A thoroughly revamped chapter covers bioenergetics with an overview of energy systems and their role in exercise. This is followed by the more rigorous thermodynamics concepts.

In addition, each chapter addresses the newest, most sophisticated information, discusses future research directions, and contains key points to reinforce understanding. The book also provides a list of abbreviations, conveniently located on the inside front cover, to help the reader become familiar with commonly used biochemistry terms; chapter summaries; a glossary; and a comprehensive reference list to help students absorb and apply the content.

This new edition fully integrates the concepts of biochemistry and physiology of exercise and provides critical information on how genes are controlled. In doing so, it melds the fields of human nutrition, physiology, and biochemistry into a more unifying science, and it presents students with the biochemistry content they need in order to understand the molecular aspects of human physical activity. The text helps prepare students for what lies ahead, and it is a great tool for professionals in related fields who want to learn about the biochemistry of exercise. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Biochemistry needs more info
For someone that is detailed oriented, I found this book not to be useful. The main points of biochemistry were summed up, but the exact details were forgotten.I had this book assigned to me for graduate school, and I could've done without it.I ended up using my undergraduate text to help explain the details that the professor was looking for on essay questions instead of this book. However, it is useful for someone that wants a basic overview on biochemistry.May even be a good introductory for AP Bio students or chemistry students in high school.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great biochemistry book!
This book clearly and concisely explains biochemistry terms and concepts.I was having trouble understanding the information in the textbook for my class, and this book helps pull it together and make it all make sense. It's been a lifesaver for me this semester!

3-0 out of 5 stars Tight, concise, pretty nice, right price.
This book is a super concise quick read on the subject. It covers the main points without boggling you with information overload on deatils. I wish it would show more chemical structure at times to make the logical of transformations more transparent;in the metabolism sections particularly. The graphics are minimalmistic, this mode is not exploited by the authors. It does not make much of an attempt to help you better understand the logic of the subject in the metabolism section. Overall I believe the book delivers what it promises. Still I wish there was a concise review book with good graphic displays, interesting writing that revealed the beauty and logic of the subject more. I give this book a C to B- overall.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!!!
This book was my lifeline when I took Biochemistry this past year. Everything is logically organized and the chapters are easy to read andquick to comprehend. The level of detail provided is perfect for anundergraduate level biochemistry course. The diagrams, while simplistic, are easy to understand and remember for use on exams. The only drawbackmight be a failure to integrate all the different metabolic pathways, butthis is a shortcoming found in many textbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent brief presentation of numerous topics in biochem
The book is a very good overview of biochemical processes, covering many significant topics.Detail level is moderate -- not as detailed as an indepth study, which I found a bit disappointing in topics that were ofspecial interest to me, but on the other hand the information is fairlycomplete for review or introductory purposes.Lots of diagrams supplementthe text, and most provide an extra illumination of the topic, which Iappreciated.Topics cover: cells and structure, amino acids and proteins, enzymes, antibodies, membranes, DNA and RNA (which could have been left outof this book, since it is covered in much more detail in the Instant Notesin Molecular Biology volume), protein synthesis, recombinant DNA,carbohydrate/lipid/nitrogen metabolism, respiration (Krebs Cycle), and afinal chapter that covers muscle contraction, nerve conduction andneurotransmitters -- although the info here is too brief -- and collagen. Viruses are also covered, altho again they are covered in more detail inInstant Notes in Microbiology.I'm using this book along with withBiochemistry by Champe (great illustrations -- more info on the biologicalprocesses) to get a basic understanding of biochem. This book could be agreat reference for a student/professional review or for a quick look-up ofprocesses or concepts.Brief mention is made, also, of medical conditionsresulting from errors, mutations, or deficiencies in the topics covered, but I would like to have seen more of this type of information (e.g., therealistic consequences).Otherwise, very pleased with the book, bothinformation contained in the text and the layout of the diagrams. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars good book
If you are looking for a good physical chemistry textbook at a graduate study level, this is a good one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written, poorly edited, difficult to follow
I have only been using this book for a few weeks for my undergraduate Biophysics class and I already hate it.It is extremely wordy, does not do a good job at highlighting the key concepts, is difficult to find a specific topic that you are interested in, is inconsistent with itself (it will vary the name that it calls a specific theory or equation), and has an index that is far from helpful.I spend more time flipping through the chapter trying to figure out where the topic is that the homework problem references than I do actually solving the problem.

I only give it 2 stars instead of 1 because it does contain a lot of information. That information is presented in a way that makes it extremely difficult to learn from and produces a lot of frustration on the part of the reader. If you are a professor reading this, please find a different book.Your students will thank you.

4-0 out of 5 stars general book

This book is a short survey of modern biophysics. Indeed, some chapters in this book have very general character and very often the knowledge presented in these chapters is not deep enough. Size of this book, which was published in one volume only is its biggest limitation, because presented subject is very wide and consists of many different scientific disciplines.

Anyway this book can be regarded as a good overview of the very wide and diverse subject. I really do not understand why so many people complain here so much.

This is book about the principles of biophysics.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dense as lead
The title says it all. This book has lots of good information, but the mere task of trying to read it will put a stressed head to sleep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book! More geared to P-Chem students and students in Physics.
I'm a graduate student in Physical Chemistry, and from my point of view Principles of Physical Biochemistry is a great book and a welcomed addition to my library! I can see how many students and reviewers can rate this book as negative without the proper preparation. As a matter of fact, most graduate students in Chemistry (organic, inorganic, analytical, materials,....) majors found this book and course to be very difficult and challenging. Let's face it, physical chemistry and all of its sub-disciplines ARE mathematical, and require extensive knowledge of physics. To comprehend and appreciate the material and scope of this book you need to be comfortable with single & multivariable calculus, differential equations (basic understanding of separation of variables; understanding how solutions to D.E.'s are applicable to the equation itself), basic linear algebra (matrix operation, inverse matrix, determinants, etc..), and vector analysis (vector integration, multiplication, etc..). It's not that the math is overwhelming or difficult, but you have to be comfortable with it in the sense that you can understand the basic structure of the equations presented. In addition, you need two semesters of undergraduate physical chemistry or physics courses that have taught statistical mechanics, classical thermodynamics, non-relativistic quantum mechanics (the Schrödinger equation, Dirac's bra and ket formalism, perturbation theory, eigenvalue problems, and so forth), physical kinetics, and some exposure to x-ray structure analysis (Bragg equation, reciprocal space, vector analysis, Fourier analysis). To those students taking a course of this nature not familiar with the physics or mathematics-this isn't the place to be learning prerequisites for the material presented. With the mentioned preparation this book becomes very accessible! It's geared more for graduate students or advanced undergraduates that are specializing in physical chemistry, chemical physics, and so forth. This is the audience that this book is geared for and I'm sure it's the audience that find this book very straight forward (well, at least I did). So, if you're in theoretical or physical chemistry, or any other of the physical sciences, this is your book. If you don't enjoy physics and its application to chemical systems stay away. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook
Chemistry is NOT my favorite subject but this textbook made it easier to understand. My only complaint is that the answers in the back of the book were not always consistent with the answers that my instructor wanted ie..the # of sig figs or the use of the same conversion factors. Most of these concerns were alleviated with the solutions manual because at least then I could see how the answer was gotten as opposed to just having the answer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money, buy a Timberlake chemistry book instead
This textbook consistently buries important information in very wordy text.If you've taken an introductory chemistry course before and were hoping to scan the chapters to refresh your memory while doing homework or studying -- this is NOT the book for you.

Homework questions are at the end of each chapter, and frequently are more conceptual than stoichiometry type questions.Although I am not a fan of math, the stoichiometry questions are crucial to master now if you will be taking any pharmacology courses in the future (think R.N. programs).

If you have the option, buy Karen Timberlake's General, Organic and Biological Chemistry textbook instead.Apparently, that is what my school's chemistry department will be switching to next year; I recently purchased it and I wish I had bought it much sooner.

5-0 out of 5 stars A right book for all biological related students
I used it as I studied agromy and gave me a strong ground on this subject. I will probably buy it for my personal library, since I always borrowed it from University Of Chile Library.

3-0 out of 5 stars good, but it may be a bit difficult for a bignner.
This book is good, with many charts and diagrams. But it is also true that this book is a little bitdifficult for a beginner in biochemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is the first book that I really like, thank you
I am student of Agronomy, Ljubljana - Slovenia. This subject is one of the most terrible in our 2nd year, but when I bought this book it was like I found a treasure. I passed the exam at first time and with a good mark. This is the best book I was ever studying from. I wish you to do more bookslike this one is. My best and kindest regards. All the best in the future,to everyone at the book and to all the readers.

No text is ever a substitute for the journals if you work in thefield, but this book gives a sense of the whole discipline that isbeneficial for anyone who may become too narrowly fixed on one topic. Itsclear writing is also a blessing, both for those using English as a secondlanguage, and for native speakers with some affection for their ownlanguage ... Read more
