Focuses on the basic conceptual background of clinically relevant biochemistry for medical students and other health professionals. Line drawings and Biochemistryland Map in envelope inside back cover. Graduate students and medical students have different needs in their learning of biochemistry. Medical students often complain that their biochemistry courses do not focus on clinical relevance. 4-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Biochemistry Made Ridiculously Simple
It took a while to get here, but it came in great condition, and it was delivered when they said.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview
This book was the recommended study tool to prepare for a biochem clep test for my physician associate program. Each section is concise and explains things very well; the author uses colloquial language so it's not as bad as some textbooks. He uses the idea that the body is an amusement park and makes analogies of what each system does in the park. I prefer more visuals, especially in color, and this book has very few so that's why I don't give it 5 stars. (I passed the clep test thanks to it :) )

5-0 out of 5 stars make bioche so much fun and ridiculouse easy to remember!!!
To prepare my medical exams, I have to read tons of books. But this book prepare me so well in my nutrition and pharmacology class. I can talk and discuss with professors like pro. The book has an outstanding mindmap: A biochemistry amusement park!!!!!. Instead of list all those boring reactions and chemistry compounds base on organ system. The book catagorizes the reaction based on main powerhouse, carbonhydrateland... Lots of fun to read the map during the study. I spend 2 nights to finish the book and then another 10 or 15 minutes to memorize the biochemistry mind-map. The pass the exams like a piece of cake. Thank you Dr. Stephen Goldberg, you did a great job and help a lousy and lazy student like me a lot!!! I love biochemistry and all those hormones stuff now!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
Every MRS book this author publishes is awesome. This book is no exception. It's definitely not a detailed or comprehensive review. But it sure tied everything together for me, fast.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best review if you know biochemistry
Best one-day review book. 99 pages only!!!!But you need to have a good background in biochemistry. Clinical section is amazing and full as well as "infirmary section" on vitamins and hormones.
Do not read this book if you don't know the ropes of biochemistry.

1-0 out of 5 stars Never Shipped - Never Recieved
This seller failed to ship my book in time for my daughter to attend school. I ordered it 1 Aug and 26 Aug it still did not arrive. To this day, the status still says "not shipped." I had to buy the book from the university. I had to filed a claim with Amaszon since I have had it with poor communication. This seller provides little to no response. Stay away from this seller...

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Study Resource for Biochem NBME
For the Biochemistry NBME exam, this book helped me more than any other resource during the few days prior to the test. It is mostly clinical vignette-style questions, which are VERY similar to what I saw on test day (with the exception that a few pages use color pictures, which the NBME doesn't have). My medical school's biochem faculty highly recommended it, and many of my classmates agree that this book was indispensible. The questions it asks are well beyond the scope of what we learned in our course lectures (many diseases were referenced that I had never heard of!), and so it really allowed me to get a good idea of where I stood, and got me up to speed on unfamiliar material fast. Don't be surprised if a lot of the questions in this book completely stump you. That might discourage you (it did me), but it means you can learn a lot from it!

The answers to the questions are explained so well, I hardly needed to consult reference material as I studied this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential review book for both biochem and boards!
This is full of questions and very detailed answers. The look of it is appealing as well.Worth buying!

5-0 out of 5 stars Balanced
This book has a good mix between chemistry and biology. You do not need to be a strictly a biology major or strictly a chemistry to understand the concepts presented in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Biochemistry Book Ever
I used this book for all four years of biochemistry classes while getting my B. S. in biochemistry. This book was my main reference in classes which suggested other texts. It saved me thousands of dollars because I never had to buy another book on the subject.I still use it two years later as a reference in my lab.In addition, it has been incredibly helpful while making my way through my Master's.I can't think of a subject that it leaves untouched. It is a relatively easy read and it's very logically laid out.

5-0 out of 5 stars High quality, great value
This book was required for a class and was about $50 cheaper on Amazon than the campus bookstore. The book is in very good condition. It is by no means my favorite class, but the book is a good supplement to the class material and makes a pretty tough class more manageable/understandable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Satisfy
Condition was excellent and it look brand new also I would reconmmend people to buy from this seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars good quality of book and delivery service
I buy this book is not because its cheap price (only 34 cents), but because I know I need a principle book in the area of Biochemistry, peticularly in food take in metablism related topics. Based on the reviews other reader provided, I understood that I was ordering a right one. My advise to these self-taught reader: do not use a comprehesive book at beginning. 2-0 out of 5 stars Biochemistry:The Molecular Basis of Life
This is a good biochemistry text book.I am really disappointed by the response of the sales representative and the response from the sales offices in New Delhi and Bombay.I bought this book understanding that I will also have the acess to the online resources of this book which will enable me to prepare power point presentation. But inspite of sending repeated emails and telephonic calls I havent been provided by the username and password to be access the inline resources. This reflects the indifferent attitude of the concerned staff of Oxford University Press which discourages from buying any of their products in future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage, and much simpler to read and understand than other books
I am taking biochemistry again as a graduate student, so this is not the first time I have to deal with biochemistry and its books, resembles one of my worst nightmares, I have to tell you, that this book cover most of general biochemistry that you have to know like many other books, but with one difference " you can actually understand what you are reading", it has a much simpler and clear aproach than other books, this defenatily a book for a student, specially undergraduate. It has a good organization, everything fact is illustrated with an example, which really helps you to understand better a concept, and in each page you have key words, which is always a good reminder, a summary of important concepts in the end of each chapter, which really helps you review after reading and for the exams, and also the questions review in the end of each chapter they are excellent, working with each concept from the basics and moving to more challenge questions, there is also a web site, I just found out last night, where you can see the molecules and reactions in 3D and taque quizes(excellent). I also purchased the study guide which I didnt get yet, but judgging by this book I dought it is not going to be worth it. Now don't get the wrong idea, biochemistry is a complex subject, you will need to study and dedicate, and this book is a tool for and will make much easier for you it did for me. Thanks for the authors, finally somebody made a book focus in learning and teaching not just for biochemists that already know a hell of biochemistry..Thank you soo much..

5-0 out of 5 stars Condensed enough
This book is about 258 pages and has what I was looking for. There are plenty of reaction mechanisms for the molecular reactions taking place and the book is basic enough that I can start here before moving on to more detailed texts.

5-0 out of 5 stars helpfull for class

Great chem book.

The "CengageNOW access card/code" that comes with this book on amazon is NOT the same as an "OWL code".The access code with this book will provide you with an online version of the text and sample tests to help you learn...and gives you the opportunity to put in a "key code" provided by your professor to access something else...
[...]

The OWL code does not come with an online version of the textbook.
I've found that the company likes to make the differences in their products confusing to the consumer, so you buy everything.

I recommend buying a cheap used copy and if you need it, purchasing OWL through cengage to greatly reduce your expenses. It's totally worth it - as long as your used text arrives before the first day of class!

3-0 out of 5 stars Probably fine for the USMLE, not so good for the miniboard
Used this book for the first year miniboard in med school. It was a fine review.Nothing spectacular.

2-0 out of 5 stars Low yield, very dense book
I had the misfortune of not taking medical school biochemistry in my first year, so I attempted to cram all of biochemistry in a few days using this book. The books was incredibly dense, went into the pathways in incredible detail, and was not particularly helpful for highlighting the important concepts tested on USMLE Step I. I would definitely use another book for Step I review, but I might use this if I had to take a rigorous biochemistry course.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too old
Buy the new one. The older version (Version 3) is far inferior to the new one (Version 4). Regardless neither version was extremely helpful or relative to my class, however they might come in handy when studying for boards (I am keeping my book till then).

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent but Rapid Review is Better
This book is not bad but for Board review stick with Goljan and get the Rapid Review. For class there is not enough detail so I would stick with Lippincott's Biochemistry

4-0 out of 5 stars Good supplement book
I find this textbook to be a good supplement to the one I use for class (Lehniger).
It provides clear & simple understanding of the subject matter.

5-0 out of 5 stars College Students Listen Up!
This was definitely what I needed.I saved a whole bunch of money by not using my university's book store. This book even came with the interactive CD which was also pretty expensive.I wasn't even sure that the book came with the CD because it was only mentioned in the comments of the product. So make sure you read each items description carefully because it could end up saving you about a hundred bucks! The book is in fantastic condition too.Who cares if there is highlighting in some chapters I'm just gonna end up doing the same thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Biochemistry readable
Unlike most Biochemistry books, this one is readable. It also has full solutions for every problem at the end of the chapter (not just odd or even soluton sets from your typical science text book). i'm taking this class as MCAT review and it is helping me remember a lot of the orgo and gen chem II stuff.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, one-semester course in biochemistry
This book is not intended as a detailed account of biochemistry, rather it is meant to be used in its entirety as a semester-length, overview of biochemistry.Further, I would argue that the text is geared towards pre-medical and pre-physician assistant students, because a lot of interesting topics such as sulfur metabolism are not covered.Unlike larger tomes introducing a student to biology or organic chemistry, Essential Biochemistry sacrifices depth for the information a college instructor actually has time to teach in fifteen weeks.Even so, this slimmer volume has perhaps too many details, but it is much more focused than books two or three times its size.

As a point of criticism, I question the need for the first few chapters of the book. You should know basic chemistry and biology before you take a course in biochemistry. But these obligatory chapters stating the obvious seem to be a staple of all introductory science texts.

The text is well-written and pleasant to read. There are some interesting figures and charts, but the most helpful are the detailed diagrams for specific biochemical pathways (the citric acid cycle, glycolysis, oxidative phosphorylation, etc).Scattered through the text are "boxes," commentaries and information that provide "a closer look" at a specific topic or area of historical and current research.I liked reading these boxes because they offered a break in tone from the rest of the text. Finally, the book comes with an accompanying CD.I did not make time to use the CD, and so I cannot offer a review.

elkas98 is a very nice, personable and efficient business. Thankyou so much for sending my book in a very timely manner and definitely using a good delivery service like the USPS instead of UPS. Thankyou for being a part of Amazon. The world could use more companies like yours. Great wishes to you also.

4-0 out of 5 stars good but needs editing
Writing a biochemistry text that is comprehensive, clear, and up to date (reflecting the gist of the thousands of research papers published each year) is an almost impossible task. This book gets most of the way through that task, but still falls noticeably short of perfection.Chief among the nagging shortcomings are charts and graphics which are sometimes unclear (perhaps 10% could be improved), and uneven editing of text. The defects in the graphics are not so much content as presentation -- grouping of items, labels, and font sizes are often not conducive to seeing what is what.

Examples of incomplete editing are chapter and section summaries that address points never mentioned in the text.Indeed, the summaries are usually quite good and one wishes that the same concision and clarity were more uniformly in evidence in the longer text expositions. In some of the sections drawing on recent research -- e.g. the coverage of DNA to RNA transcription in Chapter 11, there is sometimes an almost random cataloging of recent research -- i.e., here are all the things we know about this transcription factor, in no particular order and with no particular relationship to the (necessarily simplified) themes we are able to bring out in this book. For the most part, however, the organization imposed on the chaos of research is creditable and comprehensible.

So, in sum, the book reflects an almost superhuman amount of work, but is still flawed.I suspect the hard truth is that there is simply not sufficient demand for such a text to permit the industrial-scale enterprise that has made a book such as Campbell and Reece's Biology so superb and in effect a "category killer" in its field.

5-0 out of 5 stars better than expectation
The book is almost new, much better than I have expected. Thank you very much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
The book was in the condition as described and arrived in atimely fashion!

1-0 out of 5 stars I hope this isn't the required text
This book is terrible. Taking notes from this book is a disaster because it's totally unorganized and in desperate need of editing. The sample problems are useless and I had to get out my general chem book to figure out how to work through many of them. The 4 star reviews must be by authors of this book or those making $$ selling it. If you are a professor please do not assign this book to your class it's a poor reference for those learning biochem for the first time. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Error after error; ripped from wikipedia
Error after error, and diagrams ripped straight from from wikipedia. Pg 156 shows wrong structures for cytosine. Unbelievable

2-0 out of 5 stars full of errors
This book looks like it might be an easy read until you encounter error after error, and then you get bogged down double checking the facts that the editors should've done. There was one error on p18, two on p19, and one on p20 that started getting me frustrated because they were back to back to back. I was able to grind through them because I knew the material, but was becoming concerned that if there were mistakes in new material, I would be incorporating incorrect info into my long term memory. That would be worse then never having read the book. I decided to give the book one last chance and jumped ahead to the nucleic acid chapter. This was mostly new material to me, so it was a good test to see if this book was detailed enough to teach me something new where I couldn't fill in the gaps subconciously. My first observation was that half the chapter on nucleic acids was spent on how to make a pyrimidine and a purine, which I don't think is very relevant. Since the chapter was only 20 pages long, I would've expected it to be almost entirely on the biochemistry of RNA and DNA (at a high level view). It didn't matter, I was quickly lost trying to decipher the 11 step uracil monophosphate synthesis diagram, and my two semesters of organic chemistry didn't come to my aid.

I gave it two stars for those who already know the material and just need a refresher, and who get some sort of thrill by playing gotcha with the author.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good re-hash
I studied the subject some 20 years ago, and needed to get re-acquainted with it for further study purposes.
The book is good for this purpose, but is certainly not comprehensive in its coverage of metabolism, the main essence of biochemistry.
It should be remembered that most people that study biochemistry are NOT going to be biochemists, as it is a para-medical and para-clinical subject for most disciplines.
The book is an adequate re-introduction to the subject, but no better than that.
Get hold of Schaums theory and problems in biochemistry after this one.
Derek

5-0 out of 5 stars summary
This is a good summary, but a college chemistry book is more detailed.Yet it fills some gaps to a chemistry course.I would suggest previewing the chapters before purchasing the book to make sure it is the right purchase.

1-0 out of 5 stars High Error Rate
This book conveys the idea that the reader is destined to become a successful biochemist after reading it. This is true, in the sense that the reader must already know quite a bit of biochemistry to sort out all the errors, inconsistencies, and oversimplifications in it. Then the book might serve as a refresher. Of course, then the reader has little need for it. Otherwise, this book is more likely to propel the reader into a state of confusion, rather than to a luminous career in biochemistry. Try Biochemistry For Dummies (For Dummies (Math & Science)) instead, although the coverage is rather different. ... Read more

Shipping time was great and the book was in good condition overall. However, there was a large amount of highlighting that was not mentioned in the book description.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just started this class, but this book is very informative.
I just started going through this book and so far it is an invaluable resource to my class. It looks like it will come in handy as a great reference tool far after I have completed my veterinary studies!

5-0 out of 5 stars biochem bookskis
The book was as expected, not brand new but still in fairly good condition.Shipping was quick and that's all that I was really looking for.Would recommend this book to any college biochem student and this seller to anyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, detailed coverage...once you know the basics
I was first introduced to this book in my 3rd year undergrad biochemistry course (a biochem-for-biochem-majors course). I couldn't stand it! It went into so much detail about every aspect of biochemistry (well above and beyond the scope of the course), but never provided any simple introductions. Advanced material is always appreciated (by me, at least), but not in the required readings, and certainly not when there's no gradual introduction into it!

Three years later, I had to take a basic biochem course (with no exemptions allowed...argh), and the required book was the Berg, Stryer, etc. textbook. That book provides a great low-level introduction. Being the kind of person that likes to know a lot about a topic and actually UNDERSTAND material as opposed to memorising it, I started referring to my old Voet & Voet text again. What a difference! When I read sections of V&V with a basic understanding of the concept, it was very informative, helpful and INTERESTING!

I highly recommend V&V for everyone who wants to UNDERSTAND (not memorise) biochemistry, but absolutely not as the main textbook for an intro course. It's a great supplementary resource for those intro courses, and a fantastic reference afterward, but it's just too complex and in-depth for the beginner, even the beginner chem or biochem major.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not quantitative
There are no quantitative worked examples in any of the chapters! The authors leave it up to you to solve the problems
at the end of each chapter, and then consult the answer book: a pedagogical mistake! For you to solve some real-world
problems, you can't just rely on the derivations and presentation of their formulae, they need to show how the formulae can
be combined and rearranged to solve problems. Great color illustrations and plenty of detail, but not practical. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good product.
I purchased this product in good condition here on Amazon and was able to sell it in good condition on Ebay. It was not new, but because I needed it for a class it was functional, it had all pages and every page was legible.

2-0 out of 5 stars FRUSTRATED AND ANNOYED!!!
Its been almost a month since I ordered my book and it still hasn't arrived. Part of the purchase included a question testbank which I received promptly but the book hasn't arrived. I've sent 4 emails to this seller and still haven't received a reply or information on my order. So I suggest if you need something promtly don't buy from this seller. I'm getting behind in my class and will now have to buy another book.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL BUY :)
It was here really quick and exactly as the orginal book except easier to carry around. GREAT PRODUCT>

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as Good as Expected!
I had to purchase the book because of the General Biochemistry course that I took at school. Although it is a well-written book, it does not provide the materials that are covered in our class. I do not even know why this book is required for an upper-division general biochemistry course! In other words, the book is very superficial and does not have enough substance.

Moreover, there are a lot of errors in the answer key section. You can pay slightly more and buy Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry, but at least you would have something that you can learn from. I would not recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Biochemistry text that leans more on the chemistry side...
This book was adopted by my university for a senior level / first year graduate level biochemistry course. It is well written and contains no messy jargon.Literally all of the text is useful information. In addition, it is concise.

My chief complaints about the book are: 1) the illustrations require substantial updating to be compared to what is presently available even in inferior texts.2) it lacks clinical/biological correlations and focuses instead on the quantitative nature of biochemistry (acid base calculations etc)Clinical correlations are certainly essential to applying biochemistry concepts. If this book had either or both of these two items, it would have earned 5 stars from me!

Instead, I recommend the following texts:
- Biochemistry: outstanding illustrations and concept coverage.
- Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach: outstanding clinical correlations with concise concept coverage and good illustrations (although not in full color)
- Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry, Fourth Edition: outstanding text and illustrations!

Product Description
Ninfa/Ballou/Benore is a solid biochemistry lab manual, dedicated to developing research skills in students, allowing them to learn techniques and develop the organizational approaches necessary to conduct laboratory research.

Ninfa/Ballou/Benore focuses on basic biochemistry laboratory techniques with a few molecular biology exercises, a reflection of most courses which concentrate on traditional biochemistry experiments and techniques. The manual also includes an introduction to ethics in the laboratory, uncommon in similar manuals. Most importantly, perhaps, is the authors' three-pronged approach to encouraging students to think like a research scientist: first, the authors introduce the scientific method and the hypothesis as a framework for developing conclusive experiments; second, the manual's experiments are designed to become increasingly complex in order to teach more advanced techniques and analysis; finally, gradually, the students are required to devise their own protocols. In this way, students and instructors are able to break away from a "cookbook" approach and to think and investigate for themselves.

Suitable for lower-level and upper-level courses; Ninfa spans these courses and can also be used for some first-year graduate work. ... Read more

The lab manual was shipped in a timely manner! It was in excellent condition on the inside and the outside! Will buy from this seller in the future!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent lab manual for Biochemistry
I used this book as a lab manual for my Biochemistry class in college. The book itself is well organized in most respects. However, there are some parts that were well explained in the manual when it came to trying to answer the problems at the end of each experiment. Some of the examples given in the pre-lab didn't apply to the questions being asked so it would lead our class to having to nag the professor for some answers on how to solve the problem. Overall though the techniques employed are relative and effective when it comes to the biochemistry field.

This book contains clinically relevant biochemistry for medical students. The chapters on cholesterol are great, and more accurate than other texts.I had trouble with biochemistry--study the pathways over and over again, then read the text, and it will all make sense. Also, the clinical portions of this book are very pragmatic. And the writing is clear and the text concise.Relevant pathology for boards is covered at the ends of chapters.

This book by Miriam Rosenthal and Robert Glew is a rare example of superb writing and excellent pedagogy.Because the writing is so very good, the book is easy to read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good resource but the print is tiny
(Paperback) I opened the book and was shocked at how small the font is.Comparing words with the same letters, "electrophoresis" is just about 18 mm in this book; in a biochem text it is 21 mm.Would it have eaten so much into their profit to give us 30 more pages with a decent font?
