Editorial Review

Product Description
Capella is the brightest star in the constellation Auriga, the sixth brightest star in the night sky and the third brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere, after Arcturus and Vega. Although it appears to be a single star to the naked eye, it is actually a star system of four stars in two binary pairs. The first pair consists of two bright, large type-G giant stars, both with a radius around 10 times the Sun's, in close orbit around each other. These two stars are thought to be cooling and expanding on their way to becoming red giants. The second pair, around 10,000 astronomical units from the first, consists of two faint, small and relatively cool red dwarfs. The Capella system is relatively close, at only 42.2 light-years (12.9 pc) from Earth. ... Read more

Product Description
This work studies orbital circularization of binarystars past the Main Sequence using two new samples ofeclipsing binary stars found in the Magellanic Cloudsby the MACHO Project, as well as samples introducedby the OGLE-II project and finds strong evidence oforbit circularization past the Main Sequence phase ofstellar evolution, by the almost complete absence ofsystems with eccentric orbits in the Red Giant partof the Color Magnitude Diagram whereas the MainSequence exhibits systems with a broad range ofeccentricities. This absence allows to robustly conclude that binarystarscircularize their orbits either on crossing theHertzsprung Gap or on ascending the Red Giant Branchwhen they undergo a sudden and dramatic increase intheir dimensions resulting in strong tidal forcesthat disrupt the orbit. The work then quantifies the effects of tidalinteraction and distortions via a a thorough study ofthe Specific Dissipation Function Q, which isgenerally not well known for binary stars and findsevidence of a low degree of tidal dissipation. ... Editorial Review

Product Description

This book provides a comprehensive, authoritative and timely review of the astrophysical approach to the investigation of gravity theories. Particular attention is paid to strong-field tests of general relativity and alternative theories of gravity, performed using collapsed objects (neutron stars, black holes and white dwarfs) in relativistic binaries as laboratories. The book starts with an introduction which gives the background linking experimental gravity in cosmic laboratories to astrophysics and fundamental physics. Subsequent chapters cover observational and theoretical aspects of the following topics: from binaries as test-beds of gravity theories to binary pulsars as cosmic laboratories; from binary star evolution to the formation of relativistic binaries; from short gamma-ray bursts to low mass X-ray binaries; from stellar-mass black hole binaries to coalescing super-massive black holes in galaxy mergers.

The book will be useful to researchers, PhD and graduate students in Astrophysics, Cosmology, Physics and Mathematics who are interested in relativistic astrophysics, experimental gravity and general relativity.

Product Description

Many types of stars show conspicuous emission lines in their optical spectra. These stars are broadly referred to as emission line stars. Emission line stars are attractive to many people because of their spectacular phenomena and their variability. The Astrophysics of Emission Line Stars offers general information on emission line stars, starting from a brief introduction to stellar astrophysics, and then moving toward a broad overview of emission line stars including early and late type stars as well as pre-main sequence stars. Detailed references have been prepared along with an index for further reading.
