Explore the New Frontiers of Nature

Neo-Giants, hairy, upright creatures-the classic Sasquatch-spotted and filmed by two men in Six Rivers National Forest, California...

True Giants, like the "nyalmo" of the Himalayas, the cannibals of folklore, often fifteen feet tall, leave startling two foot long, four-toed tracks in the mud and snow...

Thousands of reports of a wide variety of mysterious primates have intrigued humans since the beginning of recorded history, yet these shy and reclusive beings have eluded the most diligent attempts to verify their existence. Here is the first-ever comprehensive study on an astonishing variety of puzzling apelike and humanlike animals that are still being seen today. 4-0 out of 5 stars A good overview
This book's strength is its geographical listings of bizarre creatures that haunt the dark places in our world. From Bigfoot and Yeti to "merbeings," this book covers it all. You'll discover that, even in America, Bigfoot has pseudonyms - such as Skunk Ape and MoMo. The entries, which describe the creatures' suspected habitats, include sightings.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good read!
Overall I enjoyed this book. The material was presented seriously but with small touches of humor that lightened what could have been an otherwise dry read. After a lifelong interest, I have begun to research the subject seriously to prepare for my first "hunt". This is the first of several books I have ordered to add to my library, and I would recommend it to anyone who is as interested in the subject as I am.
That being said I did have a few problems......
First is the books length. I read it cover to cover in one evening, and I was hoping for something a little more in depth. The illustrations were nice but I don't think that they really added that much, and I would have liked a little more actual information.
Second is the aquatic or "merbeing" treatment in the book. I understand that the authors included these reports in an attempt to cover the subject a thoroughly as possible, but mermaids....I thought that was a bit silly. I realize that most people would consider the subject of Bigfoot itself to be pushing the limits of believability and that some suspension of disbelief is necessary to even consider the possibility seriously. I just felt that by including aquatic primates in the subject matter only damaged the credibility of an already incredible topic.
All that aside I enjoyed the book, and I feel that it would make a fine addition to any collection of the strange and unusual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good guide, great drawings, awesome theories
This is an awesome field guide, which has lots of information on the history, the up-to-date cases, and the various types that indicate these are more than hoaxes. The references and material up front and after the case descriptions give a good overview that I guess some reviewers completely missed.

What a great read...

2-0 out of 5 stars Bigfoot, Bigmistake
Although attempting to be a pack-along "Field Guide" for any encounter with an unknown creature, you suddenly realize that most of the contents of this "Field Guide" is reaching for information that just is not available. If though, you are on a camping trip and wish to wow your younger audience, this could be your guide. It is even illustrated with black and white line drawings with what is described in the descriptions. To be blunt, more a field guide for someone in the past few centuries than any actual case evidence. I had been looking for more theory and evidence than just meer far reaching speculations. I hope to find another book on this subject that will deal with hard factual evidence to scrutinize, rather than just more old conjecture.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book

Do you like Bailey School Kids books? Well you should, because they're funny and interesting. There are four main characters named Melody, Liza, Howie and Eddie. They always go on trips and the books always have a shocking problem and solution. In this book, the funny part was when the kids thought Bigfoot ate the dentist and also they think Bigfoot can't square dace on Ruby Mountain. My favorite part is when Liza got scared because she saw a monster with two huge feet.I would be scared a little, but I would get used of it.You will like this book if you're not scared of monsters like Liza is and also if you like going on adventures. This is a good book if you think you're tough and strong because you might not be so brave when you see a big monster with huge weird feet.

Bigfoot! The True Story of Apes in America

5-0 out of 5 stars Monstrously Entertaining!
While recently lecturing for the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of Mufon (the Mutual UFO Network), I had the pleasure of meeting Lisa Shiel, the author of a new book titled "The Hunt For Bigfoot."
According to the blurb for the book, "Lisa A. Shiel turned a long-time interest in alternative history and archaeology (especially Egyptology) into gripping fiction based on her own unique interpretation of events that have fueled curiosity worldwide."

With a Master's Degree in Library Science from the University of North Texas to her credit, Lisa has written what is without doubt (in my own opinion) a lively, exciting and gripping piece of fiction based around the Bigfoot mystery - and a number of other mysteries, too!

The book focuses primarily upon Katy Gallagher, a website designer and would-be anthropologist, and historian Charlie Bergren, who scour the planet for proof that current evolutionary theories are flawed.

Their quest turns dangerous when Katy is threatened and Charlie vanishes. Katy joins forces with Charlie's son, amateur Egyptologist Rick Bergren, to find the missing Charlie.

Plunging into the depths of Michigan's north woods, they tumble into a double-edged mystery - a hidden Bigfoot society protected by an ancient race with highly advanced technology who will stop at nothing to keep their secrets, and a mysterious billionaire willing, for his own reasons, to kill to preserve the Bigfoot legend.

To stay alive, Katy and Rick must unravel an enigma half a billion years in the weaving. They must find the creature science says cannot exist.

If you are even remotely interested in cryptozoology, ancient cosmic visitors, the legends of Atlantis, human evolution and more, then grab a copy of "The Hunt For Bigfoot" by Lisa Shiel as soon as possible.

Book one in the "Human Origins" series, it is soon to be followed by its sequel: "Lord Of The Dead."

5-0 out of 5 stars the hunt for bigfoot
One of the few new books which i really enjoyed.I have an interest in adventure stories, that coupled with my interest in alternatives to main stream science, found a really exciting and deep story line that held my interest until the end. This is a book of 400 pages, and read it cover to cover in just 4 days. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes thought provoking mysteries. It was a fun reading, and I look forward to her next book.

Product Description
Unlike many other sasquatch books on the market, this book takes a calm, scientific view of the creature. Dr Krantz examines data that cannot be discounted as fakes, mistakes, hoaxes or lies. Information offered for scrutinisation includes frames of Patterson's 1967 film, a number of footprint events, the problems of faking and anatomies of handprints. Krantz also presents support for his opinion that sasquatch is a normal animal species -- a higher primate related to man and the great apes. An addendum provides readers with the most up-to-date developments in the field. This authoritative publication is sure to stimulate discussion and interest within both the general public and the scientific community. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A groundbreaking work on the sasquatch
Bigfoot Sasquatch: Evidence by Dr. Grover S. Krantz is an outstanding book on the sasquatch phenomenon that should be on every serious bigfoot hunter's reading list.

One of the big problems with paranormal topics is that, as far as science is concerned, the issues in question simply aren't real. Sadly, most books on paranormal phenomena really do little to alter this. In most cases, the author will simply recite strange stories told by everyday people and offer them up as evidence that the world still holds some mysteries. Such books usually make for entertaining reading, and people can choose to believe or not, but ultimately they have little impact because the science just isn't there. This book is different.

The late Dr. Grover Krantz was in a rare position for an author on the paranormal: he was actually very qualified to study the phenomena at hand. As a professor of anthropology, Dr. Krantz was able to analyze data on the sasquatch with true scientific method. Few authors on the bigfoot phenomena are particularly qualified to use this approach, and fewer still are the academics who would risk their careers on such a controversial topic. As you might expect, Krantz himself faced considerable criticism from his peers for his continued pursuit of the sasquatch.

The book itself addresses historical evidence of the sasquatch from a variety of scientific angles. Dr. Krantz analyzes footprints and footprint casts first hand, and gives very in-depth explanations about the physical characteristics they display. He studies famous video evidence, and recreates the scenarios mathematically to examine both the authenticity of the film, as well as its coherence with other evidence. The theoretical sasquatch anatomy and locomotion are also defined and examined in great scientific detail, drawing from the various evidence collected. The book is peppered with many good photographs, illustrations, and diagrams, all used to support the topics being discussed. The majority of the content lies somewhere between a biology textbook and a CSI case reconstruction file. There is also an appendix which includes a few of Krantz' prior scientific articles from earlier in his career, which are referenced in the text.

It is important to note that Dr. Krantz only works with evidence he can examine first hand. He does not give credence to hearsay or studies by other individuals, and this lends strongly to the credibility of his conclusions. He does, however, compare his results with those of fellow researchers, often to support his work. He also maintains a very calm, level-headed approach to a topic often plagued with exaggeration and assumption, and does well to distance himself from the "lunatic fringe" which often sullies paranormal studies.

The only caveat to "Evidence" is that this is some heavy, occasionally dry reading (which is not particularly surprising considering the scientific nature of the content). The usual dramatic reports of sasquatch sightings are replaced with in-depth anatomical and mathematical data. This book will certainly enrich the mind, and in my opinion has the power to create many new believers in the sasquatch phenomena, but it will not make for entertaining campfire tales. Folks with no prior experience in the sasquatch phenomena may want to start out with some lighter reading.

A truly serious and methodical take on an infamously slippery topic, "Bigfoot Sasquatch: Evidence" can only be considered a vital work on the sasquatch phenomena. I salute the late Dr. Krantz for both his scientific vision and his unwavering dedication to uncovering the truth in the face of adversity.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book
Whether you're new to the Bigfoot mystery or an old hand, this book explains everything you need to know about the best evidence for Bigfoot's existence, the footprints these creatures leave behind. Krantz covers every angle on footprints, from dermal ridges to deformities and depth of impression. His section on the Patterson film presents solid, scientific evidence that the creature filmed is real. While quite technical, this book provides an excellent overview of the topic. If this book can't convince you of Bigfoot's existence, nothing will!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bigfoot Sasquatch by Grover Krantz
The book is full of information and knowledge, but I must warn you that it is not exciting, it is great for facts, and scientific evidence, it should be in every bigfoot readers library. By Eric J Mazzi emtazmazz@aol.com

5-0 out of 5 stars The number 1 sasqautch book
This was my first book i purchased on Bigfoot. after reading books by other authors, this book is still the best i have read. He goes into the subject much deeper then authors like loren coleman do. If you are just starting to get interested in this mystery, this book will teach everything there is to know. rest in peace, Dr Grover Krantz

5-0 out of 5 stars An in depth investigation
This book goes into great detail on many bigfoot topics from the Patterson film to the study of tracks. It's so in depth that it actually got slightly boring at times, however the information is top-notch.If you really want to understand the evidence out there, read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe the best "bigfoot book" I have read.
Its narrow geographic scope does wonders for its depth. The author understands the terrain, the people, and the topic.

More than any other book on the subject I have read, this one continually hits you over the head with our species' incredible capacity for simply not seeing what - for whatever reason - it doesn't want to see.It might do more damage to a skeptic's stance than any other.Have your favorite skeptic read it, and then ask:OK, you explain all that to me.

When they do - if they don't just spit out a couple of incoherent scoffs and bolt the room - you will either shake your head, or laugh, or both. And yeah, you might cry too, because, just like the subject of this book, we're one strange animal, we are.

Or maybe you'll convert the dude.Or at least open his mind.Because we're strange that way, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars book review
Another great book, full of stories from the Pacific Northwest about everybody's favorite hairy wildman. Full of interesting tales and more than a few good pictures.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Bigfoot Legend with an Alaskan Flavor
This hard-to-find gem is lots of fun to read through and has sketches-a-plenty!Always a bonus in any book, these renderings help bring to life the supposed encounters. The sketches aren't very good and Mr. Alley would benefit greatly from a figure drawing class or two, but the effort is appreciated.

Alley tries to carve out his own niche in the very claustrophobic world of "Bigfoot authors" by claiming that Bigfoot is neither an ape (Green, Krantz, Bindernagel, and Meldrum's favorite candidate), nor a relict hominid (as per Coleman, Byrne, Dahinden, and Murphy).Instead, he opts for curtain number 3 and suggests it's something not represented by fossils.Well, um...sure, why not?

The book goes downhill when Alley tries to throw around paleoanthropological terminology and taxonomy.I really wish Bigfoot authors would stop doing this, or at the very least, learn SOMETHING about the fossils and taxonomy before spouting off about them.Similarly, when he attributes antler scrapes on trees to Bigfoot, and logs stuck in the ground by large waves to Bigfoot, it seems like he's reeeally reaching.

Still, the book is a fun read in a Ghost Story type of way and if you accept it as a bunch of campfire stories and nothing more, it's plenty entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative Sasquatch book on a specific locale.
This was a very interesting, informative and entertaining read. Alley knows his subject well. I've read a number of Sasquatch/Bigfoot books and this ranks right up there with John Green's s Sasquatch:The Apes Among Us. What I particularly liked was the limited locale and the particulars about the Native Americans who live in that area and their beliefs concerning Sasquatch. The Field Guide to the Pacific Coast Sasquatch and the maps pinpointing the locations of all the reports was very helful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Raises the Bar for Alaska and BC Reports!
I really worry this book will soon be out of print. It offers the best coverage of sightings for the remote coastlines of British Columbia and Alaska EVER!

For those reviews that have mentioned that the book might be limited because of its "spatial" focus, I will say this is the book's strength. The bigfoot book genre will need to start moving in this focused direction to better serve readers and researchers. All the big stories have been covered many times over.

What Alley has done represents true research. He's traveled to these small fishing villages and hamlets and interviewed native populations to obtain never-before published accounts of sasquatch encounters. This is no easy chore either.Just look at a map of BC.North of Vacouver, there are only two roads to the coast: one to Prince Rupert and one to Bella Coola. The rest must be reached by boat, plane, helicopter or foot.

Raincoast Sasquatch is a rare look into the remote rainforests of British Columbia and Southeast Alaska. If you are a skeptic, you may want to find yourself a good chair. This book will have you questioning your place in the world.

Kudos to Alley.I hope he will one day publish a follow-up to this seminal work. ... Read more

Bigfoots ARE The Locals. They live here. They were here before we humans showed up on the continent and they will likely outlast us. This is a 'bigfoot book' yet it probes much deeper than a simple treatment of the hackneyed question of 'Does Bigfoot exist?'. This book delves into such questions as why bigfoots exist, why they behave as they do, and why they have not yet been, and may never be dragged into the spotlight of science and the media. And don't look to 'science' for answers, because science is currently unequipped to shed any light on this profound anthropological mystery. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Bigfoot - so much more than an animal
A very educational and entertaining book.

Thom Powell offers a truly remarkable series of examples of the amazing intelligence, cunning, and skill of these Bigfoot individuals, casting serious doubts on the theory of a "dumb ape", and introducing through compelling stories of real interactions with Bigfoot individuals their amazing capabilities.

Good "need to know" information for anyone wishing to improve their knowledge and advance the field of Sasquatch or Bigfoot research.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Highly Recommed my Friends in the Scientific Communities worldwide, but Europe in particular, to read it's contents.
The first book I read in America on the topic of the Sasquatch People. USTAD/SIFU Powell gives a complete breakdown of differing possibilities about the Sasquatch people and many theories related to this topic of great interest. The author's sense of humor is delightful and it was a pleasure to have met Mr. Powell as well. The author is very knowledgeable on many aspects related to the Sasquatch people, as well as the great otudoors. The collection of eye-witness encounters is very interesting giving has some pieces that are missing from the puzzle. I gave this book to Dr. Fatima Bukhari of the Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan, who reviewed it's contents and found the subject matter of great interest from a spiritual AND scientific perspective respectfully.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seminal Book, on our Forest Giant Neighbors
I bought this book several years ago, and find it a seminal text on Large Hominid research.I have been interested in the Sasquatch phenomena since 1976, and have been an active investigator for the past 33 years.I have tracked, these elusive giants, cast footprints, heard vocalizations and had interaction with them, although I have yet to see one.I have interviewed hundreds on eyewitnesses and believe a large percentage of them.I think the information brought forth in this book is vital, and SEMINAL to the Field.Powell has raised the bar on research material on these elusive creatures.I would not normally buy a book of this title, but I recognized the author's name from calls I made a few years before the book was released, from calls I received from the author in response to second hand accounts I reported to the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization. At the time, the author was the website/reporting curator for the BFRO, so having been impressed with him over the phone, I bought his book, and have read it twice and referred it to many other times.I have recommended the book to established researchers and those just becoming interested in the field.I find the information vital for a researcher.Along with the works of Dr Krantz, Dr. Meldrum, Greene, Coleman, and Robert Morgan, I find all of these the cornerstone of my Bigfoot library!I feel this book is a must have for any serious person wanting to research or understand these local neighbors we have in the forests around our suburbs and deep, deep in the wilderness. We are the intruders, to these local giants in their natural habitat, the forests and thickets around our rural and suburban homes.I think this book would be great for the skeptic as well, since it explains in detail the questions always brought up by honest skeptics and die-hard debunkers.Healthy skepticism is vital to any researcher, yet to me a fool is someone who has made his mind up about a subject without bothering to dig deep into the research material. If you are throughly versed in the literature and have spoken to eyewitnesses, and think it is a crock, I respect you.If you know near nothing about the subject having never interviewed at least 2 dozen eyewitnesses, never hit the bush, nor read a dozen books or so, you are a fool to have your mind set in concrete that this subject is a myth and foolish.Heck Teddy Roosevelt had an extremely terrifying encounter, and told another man's story in one of his books. If you know anything about Teddy Roosevelt the man was a fearless LION!A great read, give it a try!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fascinating
This book is absolutely fascinating, and is perhaps the first to profile the controversial idea of habituation. It also brings to light some interesting patterns which witnesses observe with their "local" Sasquatches, such as using tactics to distract witnesses who see a Sasquatch in front of them, but hear others behind them making all kinds of vocalizations; a belly-crawling creature which seems to fit with the Skookum Cast creature (the belly-crawling was towards a fruit pile); continued temporary abduction of children to play with them or just for comfort after the Sasquatch lose a young one and other patterns which seem to be quite interesting and in some cases controversial. The Skookum expedition is given its own chapter as well. I do recommend this book quite highly. I would give it about 4 1/2 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best sources on Bigfoot phenomenon...but
I enjoyed Powell's work here, and I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about this subject than the old rehashed Patterson/Gimlin stuff. The Nevada Forest fire story is worth the price of the book by itself.

One thing that occurs to me though:

Once Powell touched on the witness reports of Sasquatches being seen in conjunction with UFOs, (including the story of creatures wearing blue glowing belts)this correlation changes the entire complexion of the phenomenon. Linda Moulton Howe has written significantly on this permutation and if we accept the premise that Sasquatches are working with entities that would occupy UFOs, for us to bother with trying to capture or kill one, or in pinning some social behaviors on them seems moot and silly.

Howe suggested that Sasquatches are basically biological creatures created by alien technology and possibly employed as agents who monitor environmental conditions on the planet. This may seem a bit of a stretch, but it is infiniately more interesting than looking for bits of hair in a muddy bog.

Product Description
Could the legendary Bigfoot exist among the ancient redwoods and rugged terrain of California s Eel River Valley? Little is known of the Sinkyone people who once called those majestic forests their home. With their passing went their knowledge of their mythical legends, sacred location and unspoken areas to be left alone, lost forever or were they?

Generations of park rangers have sworn to protect one of the largest remaining groves of ancient coast redwoods. Since the park dedication, there has been at least one Bigfoot related report a year. For the most part, they were never taken very serious, written off as misidentified wildlife, or an over active imagination brought on by the aura of an ancient forest and even a self fulfilling prophecy for those who really want to believe.

For one skeptical ranger, they were nothing more than entertaining folklore and myths. That all changed one-day after a series of Bigfoot related reports were brought to his attention. During his search for answers, he discovered that there was more to the redwoods then he ever imagined and found himself down a path that would forever change his way of thinking.

3-0 out of 5 stars A mysterious mystery! Full of Mystery!
This is book 2 in Leiterman's bigfoot series following The Bigfoot Mystery: The Adventure Begins. The story: two kayakers report an encounter they have with a mysterious creature to the local park ranger, Ranger Roger who of course doesn't believe in bigfoot. However, as a park ranger he needs to investigate the report so he calls up bigfoot enthusiast Ken (from the first book) on a friendship basis so Ken can send his interns over (bigfoot researchers have interns?) to join him on the report. Not only do we get the interns, one of the kayakers, the ranger, but we also get the whole Backer family (again from last book) which includes four children. Okay, here's what doesn't make sense... a state park forest ranger takes children with him on a potentially dangerous animal report investigation into the forest. I know a few park rangers and this wouldn't be allowed, maybe where Mr. Leiterman works this is SOP. My feeling is the kids are there to connect the books together and so Mr. Leiterman can pay homage and be a hero to his own children upon whom he hinted these characters are based.

The first two-thirds of the book is really not much more than a fairly well descriptive of a redwood habitat and the animals therein. It's informative and seemingly well researched. However, it's all done in conversation between the ranger and interns to the children. For some reason, during dialogue, the speaker will make a statement and within the dialogue line will be improper use of parenthesis for side notes to the reader of the book (giving word pronunciation or scientific names for example). Also, Mr. Leiterman continues to abuse the word 'mystery', 'adventure', and now horrendously abuses the exclamation point throughout the text. He also continues to use bigfoot (and now yeti) as a proper noun. The author again rehashes the same bigfoot 'every-book' anecdotes he told us in the first book.

Sorry about that, but it really takes away from the enjoyment of the book.

The last third of the book returns to Ranger Roger and his rangerly duties in which all the previous characters used in the book leave to their normal lives. After the whole river bigfoot investigation, Roger has three more sightings to investigate and the ending is pretty much a giveaway just based on the introduction of the book.

Overall, the children characters are semi-annoying but young readers of this series will like them. In general, all of the characters are flat and uninformed about numerous topics. Don't get me wrong, my kids are going to love these books because they are focused for young adults. Other bigfoot enthusiasts are going to gush about what a fantastic story this is and praise Leiterman for his book. It's readable as an adult and the author does a great job on the nature descriptions during the river adventure. Leiterman is focused on writing the stories to be marketed for children and this holds back the enjoyment of the books because they seem to be dumbed-down for young people.

Product Description
With "Bigfoot", Joshua Blu Buhs traces the wild and wooly story of America's favorite homegrown monster. He begins with nineteenth-century accounts of wildmen roaming the forests of America, treks to the Himalayas to reckon with the Abominable Snowman, then takes us to northern California in 1958, when reports of a hairy hominid loping through remote woodlands marked Bigfoot's emergence as a modern marvel. Throughout, Buhs delves deeply into the trove of lore that has sprung up around Bigfoot in the ensuing half century. We meet charlatans, pseudo-scientists, and dedicated hunters of the beast - and with Buhs as our guide, the focus is always less on evaluating their claims than on understanding why Bigfoot has inspired all this drama and devotion in the first place. Writing with a scientist's skepticism but an enthusiast's deep engagement, Buhs invests the story of Bigfoot with the detail and power of a novel, offering the definitive take on this elusive beast. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Well-researched, but poorly written
Mr. Buhs put together a well-researched historical narrative of the search for the Yeti and Sasquatch over the last century, but his disdain for the searchers and believers could not be more apparent. As a student of the sociological value of myth, I appreciated the way Buhs successfully tied societal upheaval to this quest for authenticity, but Buh's continual imposition of his personal feelings about the matter, rather than letting the reader make the logical conclusions from the presented facts, muddies the book and makes it seem a harsh diatribe. Mr. Buhs is not an academic and not above passing severe judgement on his subject: His denouement outright declares that the believers are "losers in the contest for dignity", but Mr. Buhs may well wish to consider his own. Most definitely not recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty terrific Skeptical Book
This book, by author Blu Buhs, is really well-written and well-done, and it tends to take the skeptical tack, of course, giving a history of some of the major players in the Bigfoot field and some behind-the-scenes information on each. The author definitely is not of the opinion that there is a Sasquatch, but he does tend to take a more objective tack than Michael McLeod did or David Daegling. Buhs is not skeptical for the sake of being skeptical, and he is certainly not a scoftic-he just wants to see if there is any presentable evidence for the Sasquatch. He does somewhat say that Bigfoot is "dead" only in the sense of no good reliable (in his mind) evidence, but he does say that Bigfoot "lives" in advertisements and pop culture. I would most assuredly recommend this book. 4 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Bigfoot Story
Joshua Buhs enters the world of bigfoot by presenting the story of bigfoot as he finds it. Buhs recreates a timeline of wildmen in general, ranging from the yeti, sasquatch, bigfoot, and the green man based upon stories, legends, and purported sightings. He weaves a well-phrased and moderately insightful look into wildman stories but what becomes truly annoying is his constant reminder that he doesn't "believe" in bigfoot so therefore they just don't exist. I read both the 'believer' books and the skeptic books regarding this topic and Buhs, from the skeptic side, recounts the stories and legends but then dismisses them just as readily. He focuses on the psychological and sociological aspects of bigfoot instead of physical simply because he doesn't think they exist, which is fine by me. He does nothing to disprove any evidence other than recount the hoaxers of Ivan Marx and Ray Wallace (interestingly he never mentions Paul Freeman) and belittles the old investigators due to their inability to organize, share information, and constantly fight amongst each other.

All-in-all, this book fits well alongside Marjorie Halpin's Manlike Monsters on Trial. I enjoyed Buhs take on bigfoot's legend, whether they be real or not. Everyone must make up their own mind until undisputed proof arises. While Buhs constantly reminds us that he doesn't believe in bigfoot, he none-the-less respects the topic to present a readable, if not enjoyable, skeptic's book on the subject matter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy this if you're absolutely sure there are Sasquaddle
Overall, a good view of the phenomenon from the perspective of one who is skeptical of relic hominids/hominoids existing.
A bit subtlely snarky at times (as opposed to Daegling's "Bigfoot Exposed" which I found to be more even-handed in its presentation of a skeptical viewpoint on the subject). Great detail concerning how Bigfoot has become entrenched via the mass media and consumerism, along with interesting details involving the relationships between big name players who have searched for the beast.
Definately recommended for those who have a tendency to believe a lot of what they read and hear concerning Sasquatchiana.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Rise and Fall and Rise of a Legend
For some reason, the publishing industry (even the academic press) often issues two or three similar books about a given subject more or less at the same time.In May 2009, we have Joshua Blu Buhs "Bigfoot: The Life and Times of a Legend" competing with Michael McLeod's Anatomy of a Beast: Obsession and Myth on the Trail of Bigfoot.

Both books are skeptical about the existence of Bigfoot, Yeti, Sasquatch and similar legendary beasts. And both books are more sociological history than snipe hunt, focusing on colorful adventurers and scientists like Tom Slick, Rene Dahinden, Peter Byrne, Ivan Sanderson, Bernard Heuvelmans, Grover Krantz and others who pursued elusive beasts and propogated stories about them.

Buhs' work is the more scholarly of the two, featuring extensive research, footnotes and social commentary. It also has the more ponderous academic theme, which is roughly that the hunt for Bigfoot appeals to manly working class outdoorsmen who long to show nerdy scientists that they know far less than they think about about what's really out there.I'm not sure I buy that thesis, but it's plausible and it provides a useful framework for describing, in great detail, the rise and fall and transformation of Bigfoot and its cryptid cousins.

McLeod, in contrast, surveys the field at a higher level and his book is more readable and chatty. If you are looking for a good folklore and legend book to read on a long plane flight, I'd recommend McLeod; Buhs' book is a better selection for a quiet evening in a nice library.

All that said, true believers should beware:you may not enjoy Buhs' book because it assumes that Bigfoot and its cousins don't exist. For students of folklore, skeptics, and those who are just curious about the cultural phenomenon that Bigfoot has become over the last 50 years, you'll find Buhs' book to be an engaging diversion. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just terrific! Should be on the best seller's list!
I was so happy to see this come out.I've known the author for many years and can vouch for his credibility. He had dedicated his life to the research of such pursuits, has had many encounters and is as authentic as they come.I find it interesting that the one critic who wrote in didn't bother to reveal himself by name...hmmm...if you want to debate, do it intelligently and don't hide! Peter is the real deal and is a real out-of-the-box-thinker!
Kudos to him and his book! :0)

5-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Suffer Fools Gladly: Good For Him!
A must have book for any true esoteric or Bigfoot researcher.

Bigfoot Files makes no apologies: the author, Peter Guittilla understands perfectly well he's writing on something a lot of Bigfoot researchers simply won't go near: the high strangeness side of many Bigfoot encounters.

But these encounters happen, and it doesn't help research any to ignore them.

Aside from the juicy collection of really weird things, is Peter Guttilla himself. I love his attitude. These accounts exist, and he has no patience with those researchers who continue to ignore, dismiss, or mock such encounters. Guttilla doesn't suffer fools gladly, and we need more of this attitude in research.Good for him. Enough is enough; now let's get on with the investigations, and stop debating if there's anything to investigate. (The same can be said of UFOs.)

The book is an excellent collection of highly unusual Bigfoot accounts, including some accounts of three toed beings, lizard men, and other odd entities. The overall content however is about Bigfoot.

This is one of the books that belongs on the "esoteric junkie's" bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Conceptual moment in time, worth the addition to your Bigfoot library
Peter Guttilla is a thoughtful seeker of Bigfoot, and this book is an important statement of his concepts. For those that wish to have a complete history on the theories, investigations, and people linked to Bigfoot examinations in the 1970s, this is a must-buy treasure trove.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money. It doesn't get much worse than this.
I was unfortunate enough to flip through this collection of new-age psycho-babble the other day and found it to be very much in line with the 1970s-era southern California mysticism regarding these supposed hominids.Lots of speculation, very little data, and an overall feeling of being bamboozled. There are good data sets out there for the existence of a large, undocumented hominid. But this book is content to rehash stale ideas about the supernatural and goes nowhere fast.Better to spend your time on the many geeky, free-for-all web sites out there that cover the same material than waste your money on this book.If you're really interested in Bigfoot, check out the golden standard, John Green's Sasquatch: The Apes Among Us, or Grover Krantz's book Big Footprints.Leave this one to the Star Trek croud that still live in mom's basement.Cheers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Bigfoot book in 20 years.
I've read almost every major bigfoot book, and I also
direct a bigfoot research organization, the Bigfoot Investigation Project, a no-kill org., open since 1975.
Guttilla's book is the best since "Bigfoot" by B.Ann Slate and Al Berry, and in fact, Guttilla helped write that book.

This book is by an author who has had 5 sightings, and one touching. He is a psychic and is highly intelligent.

I have been involved in many of the events he writes about,
and this book upsets greatly all the "conventional" BF fans,
which is a tremendous plus.

BUY THIS BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book of sightings
Anyone interested in Bigfoot needs to read this book. The Bords have collected thousands of sightings into an easy-to-read compendium that doesn't neglect the paranormal aspects of the phenomenon. Bigfoot researchers may prefer to ignore the UFO connection, or the other strange occurrences associated with Bigfoot, but this book demonstrates how widespread such phenomena are. From historical sightings to recent encounters, this book leaves no aspect unexamined.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bigfoot fans, this is for you
Being an avid follower of this phenomenon, I must say, this is one of the nicest books that deals with the subject matter of sasquatch/bigfoot. The only downfall is the book is dated. You have coverage from around 1818 up to 1980. This covers a lot of sightings. The best thing about this book is that it deals only with sightings/contact and doesn't bog down with "Farmer Jones found some really big footprints behind his barn". Janet and Colin Bord stay away from footprint only cites.

This is an excellent book for the person with a casual interest in bigfoot. It covers lots of stories and has a 'Chronological Sighting' in the back of the book that gives very brief entries for 1000 sightings. The main text of the book is 143 pages and has a very wide selection of encounters. That text runs choronologically throughout and although many of the encounters are just a few sentences, the book far outweighs Philip Rife's "Bigfoot Across America" due to Bord's book is pre-internet which Rife clung to for stories.

The Bords due a very nice job of including all kinds of sightings, even some that are 'out there' such as UFO related ones. This is an excellent reference book and can be used for some very good research. Someone could easily use this book to make a nice data chart using the info contained within.

Overall: For the passing interest person, this book is perfect for you. For the avid follower, this is a splendid referal guide to a multitude of sightings up to 1980. I just wish there was an updated version that provided coverage from 1980 to the present as a companion guide without using unreliable internet sources.

4-0 out of 5 stars Listing of reports N American Sightings of Bigfoot
Janet and Colin Bord are writers best know for the subject material of unsolved mysteries. They have written numerous books on different subjects such as sea serpents, black dogs, ghosts, etc. In this volume they havecollected reports throughout North America of the elusive creature known asthe Sasquatch.Neither of the authors are investigators, they arereporting the available sightings on this subject. Therefore, there issome para-normal events mentioned in this book as they report what was toldby witnesses whether or not it's true is debatable. However the bulk ofthe information presented is based on the work of serious investigatorssuch as John Green, Rene Dahinden, Peter Byrne etc.The books covers earlysightings up the time the book was published in the early 1980's.At theend of the book is a chronological listing of all the reported sights theywere able to amass. This book is a valuable resource for the availablesightings up to about 1980-1982.Since this book is out of print, it maybe difficult to find, however it is not impossible. The book is wellwritten and enjoyable to read and an essential addition to the libarary ofthose interested in this area of crytozoology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bigfoot's Alive And Well In Georgia!
Georgia made international news when 2 men came forward and said they had the body of a dead bigfoot, found in north Georgia, in 2008. Many were disappointed, but not too surprised, when it turned out to be a hoax. Anyway, if bigfoot does exist, it lives somewhere in the Pacific Northwest right? Wrong. Georgia Military College Professor Wells' new book, Bigfoot In Georgia looks at the history of sightings as well as the current state of the hunt for bigfoot in the Peach State. The historian does a good job of pulling together sources from across the state that include stories 200 years old as well as some of the latest reports from the present. His 166 page book has almost 200 Endnote entries, as you would expect from a historian. He includes interviews of dedicated researchers in Georgia as well as the thoughts of professors and professionals seen on just about every bigfoot TV special. It is an interesting read for sure, especially for those living in the Deep South. People in Georgia have been seeing, and smelling, something in the woods in Georgia for years. This book will give a better insight to those curious as to what has been seen, where, and what researchers think. Why the reports are coming in seems to be due to encroachment of habitat per Dr. Wells. Makes sense with the growth rate in Georgia, as he points out. Some of these stories, made by honest people with everything to lose, are pretty scary. And,oddly enough, since the 2008 hoax the reports have kept coming in and the researchers keep going out, in search of evidence. So, I guess bigfoot didn't get the memo about his being a hoax. By the way, Dr. Wells mentions that he talked to the hoaxers and found they knew little of the scientific work being done on bigfoot, the real bigfoot, here in Georgia. Anyway, I recommend Dr. Well's book. Especially as we head into summer camping season. Grab this book for a few scary campfire stories and something to think about on your next hike. ... Read more
