Product Description

Chinese astrology predates its Western cousin by millennia, and this comprehensive text traces its history from the earliest records to the present, and explains the founding principles of the art. In-depth analysis offers insight on all the essential aspects: its foundation in astronomical observation, its development in historical context, and the methods used in interpreting the portents. There are also comprehensive studies of popular concepts such as Feng Shui, the Chinese calendar, and divination plates. The inclusion of actual Chinese horoscopes from different periods provides an intimate, unmediated look into this ancient form of divination.

4-0 out of 5 stars Primarly of academic use
This book is full of evidence collected from the author and information about the history and what is written in some ancient Chinese texts. However, if you are looking for practical knowledge in order to actually cast horoscopes or do fate or feng shui predictions, then this is not the book for you.Information is somewhat terse and examples are not given. There isn't enough to work here unless you are already very familiar with the subject matter at hand (in which case you may not even need this book) in order to use on a practical level.
What you will find here is some history, a few examples of some obscure methods in which the Chinese may have cast their horoscopes during certain periods and certain dynasties, and a lot of tables and figures with Chinese characters.A good book if you are a researcher or an academic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wow! It definitely ain't no 12 animal signs!
There's a lot of information in this book (a little bit too much at times). It's definitely not for beginners but for those die-hard Chinese astrologers.

Awesome read and still getting my head around it.

The only change that could be applied is the format... Their could be more illustrations for those who more visually oriented. ... Read more

Of this book, the author writes, "In my years of practice as a physician, I have, by the use of Astrology, been able to very quickly locate the seat of the disease, the cause of the trouble, the time when the patient began to feel uncomfortable, as based on the birth data of the patient, and this without even touching or examining the patient, and my intense desire to get this knowledge and wisdom before students and Healers in a classified form, is the reason for this Encyclopaedia.... When once you have discovered the cause of the disease, and understand its philosophy and the relation of the patient to the great Scheme of Nature, the matter of treatment I leave to you, and according to the System and Methods you may be using." H.L. Cornell's book Medical Astrology is an excellent source it helps one when diagnosing symptoms and or diseases within both Medical Astrology and ones' Native and Annual Chart in what to look for it aids in treatments and how to use herbs, foods and more in healing. The biggest part of the book helps one to understand that not all diseases are just because, but they are predicted and denoted by the specific placements in ones' chart.

For example, someone who is with a dual personality it would because of; Many planets in double-bodied signs at birth, and such signs also on the angles; Mercury in a double-bodied or bicorporeal sign, as Gemini, Sagittarius, or Pisces and then afflicted by Saturn and the Moon. The influence of Saturn is to restrain limit the mental faculities and to cause distrubance of, and an unbalanced mental state. This is one of many things in which can be diagnosed by understanding the planets in ones' Birth Chart and then comparing to the Annual Charts as well for short term illness and such.

A must have for all who are serious occultist, healers, medical doctors and Medical Astrologers as well as Astrologers.

An involving journey in the world of "fate",beautifully written and really really deep.It is worthy.Explains a lot about lot.If you have time to go deep and contemplate just buy it.An inspiration for your life essay.Astrology is just a part of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Liz Greene's books is one of the best I've seen. Her coverage is in depth. This is not an air head sun sign book. Greene ties things together giving many fresh insights. This book was recommend by a very competent astrologer. I'm certainly glad I took her advice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Astrology of Fate--Greene's magnum opus?
I have read this book through once and then referred back to it many, many times over the years. This book may be Liz's magnum opus.It really does bring together in one book many of Greene's main ideas as far as astrology is concerned. It is very philopsophical however and would not be a book for the beginning student, nor the student wishing to get specific info on certain astrological principles. It is very much a Ninth House book!I found it fascinating reading, though challenging. And I marveled at Liz's depth of knowledge and insight into the human condition. Her analysis of the 12 Zodiacal Signs as they relate to Greco-Roman mythology was really neat. The section on Pluto as an integral indicator of Fate was especially well done. All in all a very fine work!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well that certainly explains everything
Until I read this book, I thought I just couldn't receive any more enlightenment on Pluto, until this book. I avoided because of the cover, it was not appealing at first. But one day I was just in so much Plutoian pain that I faced my fears & all of my fears were totally revealed for the first time in my life. It changed everything I did in my life from that time on. I'm glad I finally got over my fears.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hail Pluto, those of us who are about to die, salute you
My humorous title for this review is in contrast to my profound respect for Liz Greene and the job she has done with this book about the planet Pluto, the planet of death and transformation.

I always, always recommend this book to my clients who are Plutonic (Scorpio in the personal signs or on the Ascendant, Pluto conjuncting inner planets, important planets in the 8th house, etc.).Their names are legion because I am Plutonic myself and draw them to me.

I believe that the greatest fear of the Plutonic person is that they are alone in the dark.I mean this symbolically and on every imaginable level. If you are so young that you want to tell me this is an outmoded impression of Pluto, I will speak to you after your first couple of Pluto transits and God help you for your naivete.

After reading Greene's book you will understand yourself at an entirely different level and you will be able to contact the MEANING in what it is you are struggling with in your life.

It is extremely difficult to talk about Pluto and its effect in people's lives with any degree of clarity.Greene shows depth, compassion, scope and breadth and, as always, her writing is TOP NOTCH.Greene is my favorite writer in the field and I highly recommend all of her books.

Perhaps her own Scorpio Rising and Pluto in the 9th house are helpful in her endeavor here but I recommend the book without qualification as the premier book on this pesky planet. ... Read more

Vedic Astrology has to be the most thoughtfully organized book dedicated to unraveling the mysteries of the Parasara method of Jyotish, "the science of light." Jyotish transcends the limitations of a logical approach to astrology, reaching into the realm of abstractions and intuition to comprehend the spirit. Ronnie Gale Dreyer goes through the common missteps and maps out the pitfalls that plague novices, and her more than 20 years of study put this complex and sometimes overwhelming subject within reach of the Western astrologer. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Dry but Precise
At first I thought this book was going to be very technical and not very informatative however, once past chapter 3 the information seemed to form itself into a whole.I think, for the beginner, the information on the Shodasavargas, Navamsa, Hora, Drekkana, and Harmonics area bit overwhelming. It was good that they were mentioned, to let the student know that there is much more to learn but they are aspects more suited for the intermediate student. The information is plain precise, and dry.I think, that the lack of flowery phrases helps the beginner to focus in on what is being taught. In short not the most inspirational instruction manual but man is it useful!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing book
[...]
I have read a number of Jyotish books including books written by Indian authors. I would not recommend you to buy this book.
Its not good at all. Mostly just a mechanical reproduction of some principles without explaining them properly.
The main thing that bothered me was that the author has not shown the use of navamsha at all. Most astrologers in India
dont even start analysing unless they see the navamsha also.
[...] If you area beginner read, "Light On Lifeby Hart Defaouw" . Its the best for beginners!
After reading "Light on Life" , read "Elements of Vedic astrology 1 & 2 by Dr.Charak". The book by Dr.Charak is one of the most comprehensive book in English (other than classical texts).
Point is that there are numerous great Pandits and scholars
who have written books on astrology and these books are a thousand times better than this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ample Treasure in This Book For Western Minds
I am exceedingly happy to see a beautifully written and constructed book,by a Western author on rudiments of Vedic Astrology. The way to elucidate the concept(s) of fundamental Vedic Jyotish(Indian Astrology)is admirable.Dreyer has justly used her over two decades of experience as Vedic Jyotish soothsayer to explain to the Western readers the complex concept(s)of fundamental Vedic Jyotish.Being a North American teacher who teaches Vedic Jyotish from the beginners level,Dreyer knows exactly "What and How",to explain to the occidental reader.Highly recommended for Western readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally able to understand vedic astrology
I thought this book was exceptionally clear and for the first time I think I really might be able to start learning the subject. It is clearly for the beginner but also enables anyone I think to learn something new.The author obviously spent many years studying the subject and has written a wonderful introduction outlining her intense studies in India. But this book is clearly written for people at any level and is written in a most enjoyable and engaging style and it is also very knowledgeable and very clear. I would recommend it highly. There are many good Vedic astrology books out there meant for the beginning student. and this is one of the best. I have studied myself for many years with some good Indian teachers.

2-0 out of 5 stars A cookbook jyotish book?
I found this book to be too much of a "cookbook". Information is good, but not enough at all. The section about the divisionals is bad..why tell you how to construct a navamsa or hora chart if she doesn't tell youhow to use it during interpretation? It's an okay introductory text..but Istrictly mean "just okay". Light on Life by Hart DeFouw is *MUCH*better, although you must be more of an intellectual to grasp theinformation. Dreyers book was written for attention spanned challengedAmericans, I think. It was one of the first jyotish books I bought, but Idon't refer back to it when I have a question. I couldn't recommend thisbook. ... Read more

Esoteric Astrology is Volume III of A Treatise on the Seven Rays. In this book, astrology is described the science of relationships--the relationship existing between all living organisms within the universe. Not only the qualities of the ray energies affect these centres of consciousness, but also the quality and energy of the ruling planets and the zodiacal signs. Seen from the exoteric outside, astrology is a vast and most involved and complex subject. From the esoteric inside, while it is still vast, all-inclusive and complex. It is also possible to perceive the thread which unites and the pattern which prevails throughout the whole system. A basic simplicity in the grand design emerges, therefore, which can serve to interpret the whole. 5-0 out of 5 stars A true classic, one of the best astrology books
One of my favorite books !Real astrology is not about wining the lottery or finding a good spouse. It's about the unfoldment of awareness, personally, and cosmically. The symbolism involved in esoteric astrology is incredibly profound and tells the story of creation, of psyche, of the creation, and of the soul's journey. There is a very good reason human beings have studied the stars and cosmos for many thousands of years. The stars and cosmos are our home, and we are bathed 24/7 in various kinds of light and cosmic energies, subtle influences around us and from the beyond. We cannot see the energy most of the time, but it's there. The universe is very complicated, but incredibly profound and awesome. This book contains an incredible amount of wisdom and needs to be absorbed slowly over time. The author states the astrology is the science of relationships ( no, not your spouse or lover ).It's about how various kinds of energy interact in a mathematical and geometric way, to create the whole universe in which we live, to allow consciousness to have a vehicle, from a galaxy, to a star, to a planet, and to a person. On a personal level, that of our soul, there is wisdom to be gained by knowing what influences are pouring into our psyche, and how we can respond to them in such a way as to expand our awareness and make the most of our lives. This book is part of a large series by the same author(s), and I recommend all of them.In particular, A Treatise on Cosmic Fire, and The Light of the Soul. Read this book multiple times, and practice meditation along with the reading. You will be amazed at the insights you gain. I wore my first copy heavily, so now I have 2.If you are not a believer in astrology you will change your views if you understand the content. If you already know and believe in astrology, you will never look at it the same after reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Go Slowly
When I first looked at this book, I found I didn't understand it at all. It took me a few years to begin to get into it...then it opened up to me and I couldn't put it down. I'm a professional astrologer now and I keep coming back to this Master work and get more out of it every time. This is one you'll have on your bookshelf for many years. My advice is to savor it slowly. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Esoteric Astrology
This book was given to me by an astrologer. He understood the complexities contained therein. I'm in my 5th reading and I still have much to learn since astrology is not my forte. Yet, with each reading I absorb a bit more about the Logos, the Will of God, the hidden Light of God and the Life of Light... Slowly, I experienced self-consciousness as a necessary step in man's evolution. Recognition of the Christ life and nature, as it expresses itself in daily living to the aspirant was seen to happen in my life in the hope that awareness as lived by the initiate will eventually be mine. A book to be read, re-read and lived. A book to pick up often, daily, for many years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's in the Constellations
This is a wonderful source for learning more on the fixed stars in ones natal and solar chart readings, it brings forth the energies which are not typically recognized when one has a reading completed.Along with the descriptions, it brings about a deeper understanding into what the fixed stars mean when in specific constellations which too has never been written.I recommend this to anyone who does readings or is just interested in understanding the cosmos on a deeper level.

Product Description
Erin Sullivan's latest book is a breakthrough bothin astrology and psychology. The Astrology of FamilyDynamics makes for gripping reading and shows us thatastrology is the only system that demonstrates the complexitiesof the family as an organic whole, the family's place in thecollective, and the role an individual plays in carrying on theancestral line. Sullivan writes with compassion and accuracy, weaving together various methods of analyzing and working withindividuals and their families. She discusses the cardinal, fixed, and mutable signs as they affect families, shows howelements work as a family dynamic, tracks core themes in familiesusing planetary positions and aspects, and explains the 4th, 8th,and 12th houses as our ancestral base. Appendices. Bibliography.Index.Amazon.com Review
Erin Sullivan does not write in the Linda Goodman style, offeringeasy-to-compute formulas or clichéd astrological typecasting. What she doesoffer in The Astrology of Family Dynamics is a discussion onhow each of us fits into the larger scheme of family, meaning humanity aswell as the nuclear family. This intriguing blend of psychology andastrology addresses the family as an organic whole, taking into account theplanetary positions that affect all members. Even without a tidy formula, each of us will certainly recognize our family in Sullivan's section on theelements, in which she characterizes families by Earth (reliability, practicality,self-reliance), Fire (spontaneity, gambling, competitiveness), Air(eccentricity, lots of space between family members, politeness), and Water(emotional, guilty, chaotic, humorous). Those who are students of astrologywill find this especially important reading. Dabblers who like theirastrology "lite" may find this a bit dense and theoretical. --Gail Hudson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent. More than the title suggests
More high quality psychological astrology with profound depth and insight from Erin Sullivan. Here the emphasis is on how an individual might begin to explore his or her origins, and relationship to family and the collective. "Family" in this context is by no means restricted to an immediate nuclear family.

As with other books by Sullivan, there is insightful treatment of many features of the birth chart that has more general applications other than the specialized subject matter in the book.
There are sections on family systems, the purpose of a family, family trees, repeating astrological patterns in the charts of families, roles such as scapegoats and blacksheep. The chapter on water houses is excellent (speaking as someone with these strong in my own chart). Transits to individual and family charts are also covered.

Sullivan finishes with several case histories that make for fascinating reading. These include a story of autism and another case where a woman carries the whole of her ancestral line as she attempts to reconnect with her roots and ancestors. I found some of this a bit heavy going at times as there is so much depth and detail on many levels, but felt rewarded by the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing approach to my family tree
As an adopted child, I had always wondered how astrologically my adopted parents fit into my life or me into theirs. This book explains the relationships between familys, even when they aren't blood familys.I erected an astrological family tree for my biological family as well as my adopted family. It was so interesting to see how I played a role in both families and how we all worked together astrologically.
I recommend this book for anyone who has ever said to themselves "How did I ever survive my childhood with us all being so different?"

4-0 out of 5 stars Something New under the Family Tree
I love Erin Sullivan's new book because it begins by bringing a Norman Rockwell picture of the family to mind and asking you if you don't find this really horrifying, it is so different from your family! This is one of the points of this great new look at an age-old problem.Families today are as different as individuals. The astrology in this book does not look to shame or blame. The object is to see what is and see what could be if perspective could change.I like this positive approach because my family is far from a Rockwell idyll and frankly I'm tired of grousing around about it.Sullivan uses classic interpretation techniques but applies them to groups of charts that cluster on the branches of the family tree.Shealso has some innovative ways of interpreting family dynamics that I feel are interesting though not conclusive.I have had approximately the same amount of practical experience as Sullivan reading astrology charts (27 years in my case) and I do not feel her "conclusions" are conclusive! They are certainly worth further exploration, however.I would consider this a seminal work. So, why not grab your Family Tree, shake down some of the those branches and see what all you little monkeys were about in incarnating together over a long period of time.Sullivan is particularlygood with the Ancestors, by the way.I think you will enjoy her approach to genealogy and heritage and find it empowering.Give this good book a try.But advanced astrologers only.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Read
Erin Sullivan is one of the finest astrologers of our time. This particular book goes into the depths of discovering the "how's and why's" families are what they are. Without judgment, and with clear information that gives you the tools to examine your own family dynamics, from a astrological standpoint, it's for the intermediate to advanced level of astrology student, but would be an enjoyable read for anybody.I love this book, and refer to it often. ... Why does Leo excel at seduction while Aquarius is more interested in studying string theory? 5-0 out of 5 stars Now I Get It!Truly enlightening.
I have read many books on Astrology over the years but Bridgett has a way of explaining the intricacies of relationships in a way that anyone can understand. Extremely helpful not just in intimate relationships but in family and business as well. Now I understand why relationships did or did not work out for me throughout my life and how to respond or approach certain people simply because we all have a different makeup and see, hear and do things differently based on our sign. Bridgett is an Angel sent to guide the rest of us out of the tunnel and into the light. Truly an awakening for me in my spiritual journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a book about Astrology that is accurate and easy to read
Bridgett Walther clearly knows what she is talking about. It is comforting to find a self-help book that has more insight than just psychological studies. She seems to know me better than I know myself. What a relief! Very helpful in dealing with how the signs mesh together and what you can do to bring the best out in yourself and others. I loved it and have given it as a gift to two friends. ... Read more

Product Description
Astrology is a major feature of contemporary popular culture. Recent research indicates that 99% of adults in the modern west know their birth sign. In the modern west astrology thrives as part of our culture despite being a pre-Christian, pre-scientific world-view. Medieval and Renaissance Europe marked the high water mark for astrology. It was a subject of high theological speculation, was used to advise kings and popes, and to arrange any activity from the beginning of battles to the most auspicious time to have one's hair cut. Nicholas Campion examines the foundation of modern astrology in the medieval and Renaissance worlds. Spanning the period between the collapse of classical astrology in the fifth century and the rise of popular astrology on the web in the twentieth, Campion challenges the historical convention that astrology flourished only between the twelfth and seventeenth centuries. Concluding with a discussion of astrology's popularity and appeal in the twenty-first century, Campion asks whether it should be seen as an integral part of modernity or as an element of the post-modern world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Overview
Having just completed Volume One, and now far into Volume Two, I stand in awe at this man's ability to wade through an ocean of conflicting and confusing history, involving philosophy, religion and social upheavals, and somehow never lose cite of his central thesis--the ebb and flow of astrological beliefs. And all in very readable prose, carefully documented, and largely unbiased. Of course, with such a broad overview, and with so many influences and trends to dissect and analyze, there is no doubt that experts in individual fields may quibble about certain points and generalizations. But that doesn't detract from the value of this encyclopedic work.Whether you believe in Astrology or not, noone can deny that Astrology has played a major role in the intellectualand psychological life of Man since the beginning of time, and a respectful interest in its development is certainlywarranted. And noone does it with such clarity, insightful prose, and ability to cut a clear path through the jungle of intellectual ideas than Campion, in two massive volumes of scholarship.I took a summer to read these two volumes, re-reading many passages again and again, and dont regret a moment of the effort. This is great writing, not just great scholarship. ... Read more

Product Description
"Ever since my first journey to India I have desired to share the knowledge I was fortunate enough to receive. I have also felt a need to dispel some rather major misconceptions, the main one being the fact that Hindu astrology is extraordinarily difficult. This is not true, as will soon hopefully be revealed. Although I have always been most fascinated with astrology because of the philosophical implications and revelations which can be extracted. I have done my best to keep philosophy from this work, as that is not my present purpose. It is my intention only to present Hindu astrology in a way that it deserves to be presented, which is long overdue -- a way which western astrologers can understand and utilise, and which will clear away the mystery and finally put into perspective the enormously complex techniques which make up the bulk of most textbooks on the subject. Having worked with both Hindu and western systems, it is my experience that the two greatly complement each other and together form the basis for a complete and profound astrology." -- taken from the Introduction. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars My first Vedic book
It's been a great book as I struggle to learn Vedic when I've been a Western astrology person for years.I do wish it included transits but other than that an awesome text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vedic Astrology made simple
Basically the chapters are introduced in sequence for easy understanding for a new comer like me. I must thank James Braha for his effort to integrate Western Astrology along with Vedic Astrology giving greater impetus to Astrology as a spiritual science to understand the spiritual being we are within. I would recommend to read ANCIENT HINDU ASTROLOGY FOR Modern Western Astrologer first before you pursue with THE ART and PRACTICE OF ANCIENT HINDU ASTROLOGY. Finally but not least, I thank Amazon for their amazing professional service at all times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Beginner's Book
-Solid info to get you started
-Not an overload of info, but you get enough to give you a good sense of houses, planets, aspects; you walk away with enough to allow you to grasp more indepth intermediate information
-Large book, large print, thick paper, plenty of white-space so your eyes aren't hurting after you read; the white space helps you get through the book, feeling good, turning pages.
-Not a good source to learn about signs (Virgo, Scorpio, etc.)

3-0 out of 5 stars Braha tries to swim without knowing depth of the ocean
First things first - This is NOT the FIRST book to be read on Vedic/Sidereal Astrology.
The first 2 books {to be simultaneously read} HAVE to be "Light on Life" (by Svoboda & Hart De fouw) and "Astrology of the seers" (By David Frawley.)

This book can be the THIRD book you read after having read the above two.

What is good about this book:
->It's not too bulky but is still quite comprehensive.
->All the stuff about placement of various planets in signs & houses iscovered.

What isn't good about this book:
This is a *Text-Book.* Braha had little personal experience when he wrote this book. So there aren't many real world insights (they come in his later work - "The Art and Practice of Ancient Hindu Astrology: Nine Intimate Sessions Between Teacher and Student")

Somewhere in the preface Braha loudly proclaims that one of the reasons he wanted to write this book is to dispel the myth that "Vedic astrology is difficult to learn" (yeah it isnt if one purely follows the text book stuff - which would in real life make one fall straight on the face.)Years later, in his 9 intimate sessions book, Braha confesses that vedic astrology isn't meant to be comprehended by Humans. It needs a spark of divinity.

This is just an average book. But it serves as a important link between the absolute beginners & the intermediate level.

I give it 3 on 5 :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars An Astrology Classic
This is the book that started the Vedic Astrology movement in America, making James Braha the "grandfather" of Hindu Astrology in the West.I highly recommend this enduring classic. ... Read more

In short, this is a well-designed course that provides a solid foundation for anyone who is interested in practicing astrology quickly and with confidence. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for interpreting birth charts.
This is a great book for beginners to learn how to understanding the birth charts. I always reference this book. After the reading, there's a birth chart interpretation worksheet. If you take your time to study this book, you will be on your way to become an astrologer. And if you contact the author via his web site, he will answer any questions you have regarding the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Basic Astrology Book
This is a great basic astrology book. I particularly like that it doesn't just talk about the planets and signs in your natal chart, but also discusses them as a stand alone entity. This is really helpful when wanting to look at astrology outside of the natal chart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Logical Astrology
When I first read this book it was one of the beginner books that was suggested and I did not appreciate it.I struggled with the idea that certain positions could be better placed than others. It seemed like a put down to everyone that I knew, but after a few years of doing charts I recognize the truth in what the Mr. Burk is writing.
It doesn't matter to me if he uses modern rulers or not; both methods are effective from what I have seen. The strongest point of this book is that it is not silly astrology. He writes in a professional manner that does not embarrass. Although I thought that he preferred certain signs, given his own chart it was understandable, and he doesn't dwell on his trivialities or promote sex roles. It is just astrology. I find that I sometimes reference this book to understand his observation of a position.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the Birth Chart
I have been reading about astrology off and on for years. This book taught me more than any other I have seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource!
Grant Lewi was a genius when it comes to astrology. This book should be on the shelf of all astrology students. Easy to read/use.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspired Work
A work of genius and subtle depth .He writes well : broad, concise, exact and yet open for reflection with a phenomenal depth of understanding of people and astrology. He wasn't pandering to the rich or famous but genuinely concerned to liberate man from the treadmill of personal folly. An inspired work that only perfect sincerity can deliver.
This book will stand when most others have fallen away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Astrology For The Millions
This is an excellent astrology book for the person who wants a little more in depth understanding of the signs and the meaning of the planets and moon in the natal chart. The in depth coverage and ease of use of tables enable the beginner to do accurate natal reading, and to progress the chart into the present. You will be amazed at how close the book is to the happenings in your life and the lives of the people you know well.
If you are a person who has wondered why people are different.Or if you have begun to catagorize people into groups that fit the astrological profiles, you will be astonished, not only that your profiles are correct but that the birthdays work. The book takes you on the next step to understand human psychology in a way that Freud dismissed, but Isaac Newton accepted with the pragmatic enthusiasm of a practical observer of natural events.

1-0 out of 5 stars Take control of your life
After buying, reading and finally discarting a ton of books on Astrology, card and hand reading, Nostradamus, you-name-it: the best way to take control of your life is to steer away from this kind of quackery. There is no such thing as destiny. If you believe in destiny and it being writen somewhere and predictable you'll live a slave of such archaic notion and people like these.

If Grant Lewi has ANY proof that there is any truth to Astrology, he should contact James Randi and claim his $1 million prize. It should be so easy. One has to wonder why hasn't he done so already...

3-0 out of 5 stars ok
didn't care for this too much. but if you can understand it, i guess it is good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good very basic book for Beginners
This is one of the most basic books on Vedic Astrology around. It is designed for people who just want to dip their toes into the waters of Vedic Astrology.

Even if you know absolutely nothing about astrology, once you have your vedic chart, all you need to do is find where are your planets (grahas) placed on the chart and read most likely interpretations based on the sign and the house they occupy. That is essentially the scope of this book.

To make the points easier to understand, the author provides numerous examples through the charts of several famous people.
You learn a little bit about aspects between planets and transits mainly through the author's intepretation of these sample charts. However, if you want to be able to get more information out of your own chart, you will have to continue your study through other books and resources.

The book contains a demo version of the Parashara Light program. If you are genuinely interested in learning Vedic astrology, this is an exquisite program.Other than just creating charts, it contains text from numerous classic books on Vedic Astrology and it can be very helpful to a genuine student.

I have not installed the demo version since I had the full version of the program, so I don't know what the drawbacks of the demo version are. However, if you are unable to use the demo version and desire to test the waters of Vedic Astrology by exploring your own chart, if you contact me, I will email you your own chart, so you can have fun and discover if you'd like to continue learning. What I can say - I love to help people who have passion for learning new things.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, terrible software
I was pleased with the book, which provided a good entry-level tutorial on Vedic astrology. There is scant discussion of the dasas, but a very thorough description of the planets in the houses that comprised most of the book.Several charts are presented to make the point when needed. If you keep your own chart at hand as you read, you'll see how it all fits--and in truth, Vedic astrology is often more accurate than most Western brands!

But the software is another matter altogether. It is a demo of a pretty expensive package and takes up a lot of space on your hard drive for just doing a few charts. If the reader wants to pay $300, a "key" is provided that enables the rest of its features. Most people picking up this book will not likely need or want the behemoth package: beginners may find it all confusing, and professionals won't need many of the features.

Worse, I'm having difficulty uninstalling it: the demo package on the CD offers no uninstall feature.A better option would have been to ship a smaller version equipped only to do the charts, along with a brochure describing what the package can do.

The book, however, is definitely worth the price, especially for beginners.Buy it, and explore this branch of astrology. If you love it as much as I do, pick up other books on the topic and really look into it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Innovative book - a must have
Tom Jacobs approach to evolutionary astrology specifically and astrology in general is not it be missed. Famed evolutionary astrologer Steven Forrest wrote the forward to this book and says(Tomis) "on the cutting edge of not only Evolutionary astrology, but also the emerging paradigms of sacred astrology". And this book proves that. The book begins with Tom's explanation of the soul's experience from a karmic perspective which is superb and untangles a subject that is nearly indefinable. After that, Tom introduces his practical method of unlocking a chart not necessarily new in theory, although some of Tom's ideas are truly unique, but new in systematic approach. This system, of which Tom has developed and has been using in his practice, is straightforward but incredibly profound and powerful. Tom gives many examples to add relevance and understanding to his approach. There are plenty ofspecifics as well which I personally look for in a good astrology text, including information on asteroids, house placement, retrogrades, aspects, signs, and nodal axis. So, if you are ready to take your astrology practice to a new level or just have the urge to delve more deeply into your own birth chart this book is a must buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tom Jacobs Offers Timely Help In Deciphering A Natal Chart!

Having been a student of astrology for some time, and of evolutionary astrology in particular over the past couple of years, I have delved into many a book in search of a concise and clearly instructed methodology by which to decipher the evolutionary intent of the soul (native to the chart). I have found Tom Jacobs' The Soul's Journey I: Astrology, Reincarnation, and Karma with a Medium and Channel to be an indispensible aid in this process. It is very helpful in simplifying the confusion and overwhelm that one may experience when looking at a natal chart--very clear, very directed as to what you are looking for in order to decipher and synthesize the overall evolutionary or karmic picture. Jacobs includes some very liberating astrological explanations, and you get the sense that the author himself has delved deeply into his own transformative process and is speaking from direct experience, and not simply theory. The book is a very accessible and useful tool for the beginner as well as for the advanced student or practitioner--a great contribution to the evolutionary shift in astrology! Thanks, Tom Jacobs! ... Read more
