4-0 out of 5 stars Great questions, beginnings of answers
The fundamental thrust of this book is "what of Astrology given the advances in modern sciences and the crisis in Western spirituality?"Can Astrology be an empirical science? Can it be put into a positive and meaningful context in modern philosophy? What about modern psychology?

These are promising questions. Most of Rudhyar's attempts, however, fall flat to some extent. What he ends up suggesting is that astrology is essentially a theory of personality and that this is its most important application.I am not entirely sure I agree with Rudhyar, but it is a reasonable view.

The book is organized in two parts. The first is an exploration of what various philosophical ideas may apply to astrology and the second is an exploration of astrology as a theory of personality (or more broadly, an "algebra of life").

My approach would be very different from Rudhyar's view in that rather than working backwards from the present, I would likely work forward from early philosophical models. For example, in Timaeus, Plato offers a theory of astrology based on a common structure between the human spirit and the cosmos. As we move towards the present, there becomes an urge, which Rudhyar entertains, to try to place astrology and similar old traditions in the purview of scientific disciplines and psychological views.

The result is that I found a lot of Rudhyar's approach somewhat less than satisfying. He tries to treat acausal principles as scientific, and almost treats the I Ching as a scientific treatise.Yet for all the problems, he asks the profound and difficult questions and it is likely that individuals reading the book will be challenged and urged to think about some of the issues themselves.

As one can guess, this is not a beginning book on how to practice astrology. However, an urge to practice astrology is not needed to get something out of it.

Generally recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars love this book!!!!
I am not normally one to believe astrological thinking but this book is fantastic, I have never read anything that summarizes my personality or the personalities of the people I am friends with or have dated. It is kind of scary actually. I would highly recommend this book if you wonder why you are the way you are or why you interact with people the way you do.I joke now with my friends that Im going to hand out photo copies of the section about my sign to people when I meet them so that they know everything they need to know about me right from the start. Happy reading!

I have had 17 out of 17 people read their apropriate sign, and EVERY single one of them either put it down, or were completely blown away, by how incredibly true this book is.
I never understood why my ex was such a jerk, until I read this book, (He was an Aries), it makes so much sense.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Accurate
I am an astrology student so I can't tell you if this book agrees with what other sources say. I can only tell you that when compared with what I know of myself and others, the information just isn't accurate. Since I can't trust the interpretations of the Nodes, I can't trust the rest of the information either.

1-0 out of 5 stars All About the Author
Very little of interest here.Every other sentence seems to start with "I had a client who".. Tiresome writing and nothing new, even if you can get through the terrible editing.

5-0 out of 5 stars To Node You is to Love You
This is my first Amazon review. I'm writing because I depend on user reviews when I make my purchases here. This book, Cosmic Love by Jan Spiller, is invaluable to me because of its synastry section. It continually allows me to help many awakened individuals explore their relationships at the soul level.

For instance, two of my friends were feeling a little hesitant or cautious about becoming closer in their relationship when they came to me. They didn't understand why they felt uneasy with eachother. Then I ran a synastry chart and discovered their Nodal/planetary conjunctions. I read to them the significance of where their North Nodes fell in eachother's houses and how their conjunctions revealed exactly what was going on at the subconscious level. Everything made sense to them and so they consciously began transmuting the energies. Much healing and self-awareness has taken place because of this book.

Personally, it helped me understand a particular 2-way soul contract of a soul-mate relationship in which I was involved. It reaffirmed what I was feeling, allowed me to see the bigger picture, and enabled me to communicate more efficiently to the other person about the karmic debt, so that we could bring the relationship to completion.

To quote from Jan Spiller, "The astrological connections between you and another will show what past life interactions were involved, the unfinished business that remains and the specific ways you can resolve any karma with this particular Soul." "If you truly desire to create a win-win resolution with the other person, Love will be the overriding energy." So I would highly recommend this book to astrologers or students of astrology who want to help themselves or others resolve conflicts in relationships.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic work on sacred science
Titus Burckhardt's 'Mystical Astrology According to Ibn'Arabi' is a seminal work on 'sacred science' - which, in sharp contrast to modern 'profane' science, ties knowledge to a higher reality. The subject matter is the astrological doctrine of Sufi master Muhyiddin Ibn 'Arabi.

Be warned that despite its brevity, this slim volume is a dense and difficult work. Before attempting to tackle it, it would be a good idea to familiarize yourself with the traditional worldview that Burckhardt takes as a given. Given the crass nature of contemporary astrology, people tend to conceive astrology as saying that this-or-that star or planet 'causes' events 'down here.' Since it is difficult for most of us to honestly believe that the planet Mars is affecting our moods, most of us naturally regard astrology as superstitious nonsense. However, those who have not yet grasped the significance of the difference between the modern worldview and the traditional worldview of antiquity (especially the ideas of cyclical time) will be at a loss when attempting to grasp the significance that astrology had to ancient peoples.

Burckhardt wrote in his essay 'Traditional Cosmology and the Modern World' (found in _Mirror of the Intellect_) that 'the man of antiquity, who pictured the earth as an island surrounded by the primordial ocean and covered by the dome of heaven, and the medieval man, who saw the heavens as concentric spheres extending from the earth to the limitless sphere of the Divine Spirit, were no doubt mistaken regarding the true disposition and proportions of the sensible universe. On the other hand, they were fully conscious of the fact - infinitely more important - that this corporeal world is not the whole of reality, and that it is as if surrounded and pervaded by a reality, both greater and more subtle, that in its turn is contained in the Spirit, and they knew, indirectly or directly, that the world in all its extension disappears in the face of the Infinite.'

Traditional man was concerned with a higher spiritual reality, which gives meaning to the notion that the Earth is the center of the universe. '...given that the human being occupies a central position in the cosmic atmosphere which surrounds him, and that he has a right to consider this position, since he is obliged to make of it as a starting point for his spiritual realization, as he is situated on the axis itself which unites the poles of the universe, passing from the lowest centre of 'material' gravity up to the supreme centre of 'First Intellect'. (p. 43)

To traditional man, the universe was not just a collection of molecules, but rather material evidence of the divine. To ancient seers, man possessed all of the faculties necessary in his five senses in order to correctly perceive the nature of cosmos and his role in it; modern astronomy has not made a bit of difference in man's ability to make sense of his place in the world despite all of the knowledge it has gleaned. Burckhardt states that the 'celestial space in which the planets describe their revolutions represents in some ways the extreme limits of the sensible world, and these limits are inversely analogous to the centre which is man himself...' (p. 28). In this context, to give but one example, the relationship between Sun and Moon are indicative of divine aspects of man, which embody themselves in the differences between the sexes: 'The relation between the Sun and the Moon is analogous to that which holds between the Pure Intellect and reflection in the human form.' (p. 30) When the true significance of the earth as the 'centre' is grasped, the meaning of the precession of the equinoxes also takes on a different significance; Burckhardt does not discuss this particular subject explicitly in this book, but anyone interested in the notions of cyclical time will find a lot of food for thought in these passages.

In close, 'Mystical Astrology According to Ibn'Arabi' is highly recommended for serious students of esoterica and traditional cosmology, and it is difficult to recommend too highly (although the same can be said for all of Burckhardt's works.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Spiritual Node Book going
This book isn't new, but it is still number one when it comes to understanding the moon's nodes on a spritual level.A must for anyone doing spiritual astrology.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on Retrograde Planets
Retrograde Planets are often difficult to understand or explain.I don't believe that there are any good or bad charts or planets. There are Gifts and Challenges that are ultimately Opportunities for Growth and Spiritual Progressions.Martin Schulman explains the vibrational energies of the retrograde planets as they travel through the various houses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it Again, Sam, and this time read it right!
It is very hard to interpret retrograde planets in a chart, particularly if you don't have any retrograde planets yourself. You will find that there is very little written about the interpretation of retrogrades and Schulman has done a very fine job of explaining the energy of this phenomenon in his book.
Every book in the series is excellent and together they make a nice "set" edition to your astrological reference library.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best
This is a must-have book for anyone studying horary astrology. I purchased three books and they all arrived in the same perfect package and in fantastic condition.

4-0 out of 5 stars A "Basics Instruction Guide" in Horary Astrology
Horary Astrology Plain & Simple : Fast & Accurate Answers to Real World Questions I was eager to read a book on this type of astrology.I wasn't sure if I should have bought a Willima Lilly's Christian Astrology Books, or Anthony Lewis. After reading it, I'm glad that I bought it.

Even though I wrote that it is a "basics" book.I would say that the reader needs to have some knowledge of astrology. For example, it taught me about "Via Combust."I didn't have a very good foundation of knowledge concermomg the matter. It has helpful charts and Mr. Lewis explains them very well.

I cannot see as to how anyone would be disappointed in the book.A great instruction tool and yes, should be in every astrologer's library.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but some serious flaws
This is a very comprehensive and detailed work on horary astrology and certainly will demand and mostly reward a lot of study. It covers almost everything about horary, but is confusing and does not leave you feeling confident that horary is going to work. The confusion is because the author does not resolve the problems of using the traditional method with modern planets and aspects, and instead jumbles it all together, sometimes using one, sometimes the other, and suggesting that you need to find your own way. This suggestion does not suit this precise branch of astrology, and besides, horary works best when done the original way as experience usually shows. There are also numerous technical errors and contradictions and too many innovations - horary is demanding enough without having to invent extra complications. But the book is amazingly comprehensive and will still give you a lot of real and valuable information.

In summary, this book will serve if you can't get hold of the far superior Horary Textbook by John Frawley, and of course a study of Lilly's Christian Astrology will be challenging but pay off much more handsome dividends now that it is readily avialable.

5-0 out of 5 stars great 'how to' book
this is a great way to learn horary - it's a way to use astrology like throwing the I Ching. and if you are an astrologer and have that fantastic program Solar Fire, it's easy as pie. i've read a few horary books, but like this one the best

5-0 out of 5 stars Not so plain and simple, but still an excelent title.
Horary Plain and Simple is not all that plain simple once you start reading the book. It's a bit confusing trying to comprehend what the author is talking about when you have not yet covered a topic that is being brought up. The author discusses things such as Trines, Squares, Orbs, and conjuctions before even explaining what these things are and what they mean when interpreting a chart. While I was already familiar with most of these terms the beginner astrologer might not grasp these concepts. However everything is explained in the chapter after the one in which they are introduced. While this may seem a little unorthodox it really does work quite well.
Another thing that is not mentioned until you start reading the book is that this book covers both modern and traditional (Classical) Horary Astrology. It does use the three outer planets in the interpretations, however if you are like me; a student of William Lilly (or other Traditional Astrologer) it is really not hard to find a modern list of views pertaining to the traditional 7 planets and what interpretations can be used for modern living. Many of Lilly's charts are used in this title and he is referred to many times throughout as well as others such as Ptolemy. The author also includes many of his own charts from the past to add that modern feel. This books value far out weights the considerably miner issues. It is definitely something I will refer back to for many years to come.

I do suggest at least understanding of the basics of astrology. The very basics at least. ... Read more

Product Description
This first full-scale reconstruction of his essential text has waited 85 years to appear as he originally intended it.

Long before there was Linda Goodman, long before astrology bestsellers turned up in supermarkets, there was Aleister Crowley, the most important astrological scholar and authority of the early 20th century. Ghostwriting for Evangeline Adams, it was Crowley who wrote the vast majority of her classic textbooks, Astrology: Your Place in the Sun (1927) and Astrology: Your Place Among the Stars (1930). General Principles of Astrology finally acknowledges Crowley’s authorship.

Crowley’s goal was to abandon traditional assumptions, so he based his findings on actual charts and how they were expressed in people’s lives. In his characteristically clear and elegant prose, Crowley discusses each planet from a scientific and mythological point of view. He provides an exhaustive analysis of astrological types, drawing conclusions for over 180 astrological nativities of well-known artists, poets, musicians, philosophers, politicians, and business leaders from the 18th to the 20th century.

This new book is composed of painstakingly gathered work, primarily ghostwritten by Crowley, and published in various early twentieth-century texts. It is published here in one volume for the first time, in an undertaking endorsed by both the Adams and Crowley estates. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good advanced book on astrology
First, like all Crowley books, this one starts on about chapter 20.Crowley never addressed beginner issues and initial details. He never was writing to beginners. This book is no exception.Instead he jumps straight to interpretation of some elements of a chart, omits others, and so forth. The book is quite different from many more recently written on the subject, however, and provides a great deal of food for thought.

This book will not teach you how to draw up a birth chart. It will not teach you much about aspects.Crowley assumes you know astrology before turning to his work.Instead he offers a some meaty of theory and some impressive insights into some (narrow) areas of interpretation.

The part of the book I liked the most was the discussion of rising signs. To Crowley, the rising sign was the defining sign of the chart, much more than the sun sign.He spends more time discussing rising signs than most other books do discussing sun signs, and his insight is profound in this area.

One area I would have liked to see a great deal more discussion is in the area of aspects and angles.Crowley seems to have clearly seen these as important. However, we get at best a cursory discussion of aspects, and nothing on angles aside from the ascendant.

This is definitely a book though that will remain in my library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete and acurate
The body of the book is almost extent, and quite agreable to read, as it's written in Crowley's concise but fluid prose. Also, the paratext offers some letters and articles about either astrology, or about the relationship if Crowley and Adams. Finally, the hardcover along with the nice jacket, the numberous charts and the many footnotes makes reading the book a pleasure.

I have written "almost extent", because Crowley never completed the section that speak of each planet in each zodiac. However I don't believe that this small lack is if big importance, as the section could have been entirely removed while the book remaining great.

3-0 out of 5 stars An alright astrology book
The book painstakingly covers the planets and the signs, however, it is in no way a complete text book like Parker's.The material is dated like we would expect from a book published in 1927, and contains the usual offenses. Crowley praises racists like Howard Spencer.

I do not mean to be needlessly critical, but I did not find Crowley's method of communication engaging.A lot of the book is unnecessarily technical--explaining very little, but using many examples. An average page of writing contains perhaps a paragraph that is actually useful information. This is an early book, and his understanding of many of the signs tends to be extremely shallow and negative. He is also lopsided in his praise for some placements while seemingly despising others.
The book is written in with a religious fervor that is fanatical and off the topic.Crowley occasionally goes off in tangents in which he writes in an almost crazed religious euphoria. He is extremely fatalistic and overvalues public accomplishment creating a type of astrologically based caste system.

The nice thing about this book is that his presentation of astrology is very seriously, and it is written in a professional manner. His writing is intelligent and the reflection of someone who is extremely well read. Had astrologers modeled his presentation, we can assume, the profession would be looked upon with greater respect than it is currently viewed. If you want a book that is going to give you a lot of information that can quickly be applied, I would recommend one of the books by Bill Tierney or Steven Forrest. If you want to improve your astrological erudition, than this book is appropriate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mind Blowing
If you are interested in astrology this is the book 4 you. No need to say more, just buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The General Principles of Astrology by Aleister Crowley and Evangeline adams
An excellent book, though more for the intermediate and advanced astrological student than the beginner. The reason for this is because many of the explanations for basic Astrological information offered here are of a more classical nature than most of the modern "New Age" oriented books. Also of great interest is the collection of natal charts of notable individuals from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. This is because the best way to learn how to read a chart comes from studying charts, and what better way to do that than analyzing the natal map of a famous person whose deeds before the public have revealed much of their personality. The refreshing aspect here is that one will get to see the charts of individuals like Sir Issac Newton, Mozart, and Shelley rather than the likes of Madonna or Britney Spears.

For this reader, a further plus regarding the book is that its author, Aleister Crowley, is revealed not only as the ghost writer for the famous American Astrologer Evangeline Adams, but also for the truly important thinker he was rather than the distorted and dark charlatan he is often portrayed as by those who are ignorant of his serious scholarly work.

All in all I would rate this as an excellent addition to the library of anyone interested in Spirituality, Metaphysics, or the Occult as well as for those who are passionate about Astrology.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for the predictive astrologer
This book is first in my bookshelf under Predictive Astrology. It has something for
the student at almost every level. It explains the basics in straight forward easy
to understand fashion but has lots of subtle points for the more advanced students
to appreciate. This book and "Identifying Planetary Triggers" by Celeste are "Must Reads" in the area of predictive astrology as far as I'm concerned. I have all Celeste's books and they are all great..

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
There is so much valuable information in this book - for professional astrologers, beginners, and everyone in between - that it's a must for any astrology library. The author writes in such a clear way that even non-astrologers won't have to wade through a new lexicon to grasp what Celeste Teal has achieved with this book. Every section she covers - whether it's predictive techniques or love, marriage, accidents, death and bereavement - is done with such finesse that I kept racing back to my computer to run charts.

Absolutely recommended!

1-0 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE
This book was a complete waste of my time and money. I do not recommend this to ANYONE who wants an astrology book... unless you are already equipped with the "right" software. It gives you little to no explanation on how to get your natal chart let alone your progressed chart! If you want to look at others meaningless charts, just in case yours miiiiight look like one, then this is the book for you! It does have ALOTTTT of other peoples examples and what not. But good luck finding your own info. I just was looking for a more informative book. This did NOT NOT NOT fit that bill.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Information
The first edition of Predicting Events was the first book that introduced me to Celeste Teal, a student of Astrology for many years, I was looking for a book that I could learn more about Astrology, and bring me to a higher leavel, and understanding with the Nodes, Progressions, Solar Returns, and Eclipses, and how they all play a part in learning to read a chart, how important all the charts interact with each other in predicting events, and up coming events, I have had the first edition for many years, It was the book that I have been looking for, I learned so much, and had a new understanding of Astrology, it was a bible of Astrology for me, I was so fasanated with the book I decided to e-mail Celeste some questions concerning my own chart, and she replyed with so much information and compassion, and she has been teaching me and doing my charts for many years, her accuracy when doing my charts is just amazing, and how it has taught me, I was so excited to learn she was coming out with a revised edition of Predicting Events, I felt like I hit the jackpot again, I love how she updated the charts of the people in the first edition so you have an understanding of how it all played out with the current transits, progressions, and return charts, it has been a great tool for learning. The chapter on the Return Charts, the Solar, and Lunar with a wealth of information, and the Eclipses, and the Nodes, how inportant it is to look at Eclipses in your charts for the up coming year, not only your natal, but Progressed, and Solar return, and the Nodes tell the story of your destiny, where you are headed in this life time, and cross roads you my face. This is a must have book, Keep up the good work Celeste.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must have
I've been studying astrology for the past couple of years and apart from a basic course, Celeste's books have taught me a great deal more. Predicting events with astrology has given me a real heads up with solar returns and progressions.I feel more confident with the knowledge that I've gained form Celeste's books.
I call them my astrology bibles. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very well done
In this book, Dr Barton takes on the question of the significance of astrology in the ancient world. She discusses ancient sources such as Tacitus, Pliny, and Ptolomy, and explores the general atmosphere surrounding astrology in Greece and Rome.Legal and social background is covered. She covers the general way in which horoscopes were drawn up, as well as the geometry and astronomical models behind the observations. There are a few interesting questions that she leaves unanswered (for example, I couldn't tell from Maternus's writings exactly how the house cusps were calculated, whether they were using porphyry or similar).

One of the interesting elements here is the discussion of horoscope interpretation, using Prince Charles's horoscope as an example, illustrating the process of interpretation as well as the fact that predictions for an individual in Rome are not compatible with today's world directly.

A number of different people may find this book helpful including students of Greece and Rome, those interested in the history of science, those interested in the history of ideas more broadly, and practicing modern astrologers today.

A guide to the practice of planetary magic

• Offers tools for practitioners of green magic and folk magic to incorporate astrology into their practice

• Includes an extensive collection of magical remedies to resolve astrological afflictions

• Provides information on creating planetary altars and the astrological correspondences of traditional pagan holidays

Traditionally, magically oriented astrology has focused on Sun-sign horoscopes while modern Western astrology has focused on attempting to become as “scientific” as possible in hopes of aligning with its sister science of astronomy. In Pagan Astrology, Raven Kaldera, a practicing astrologer and Pagan shaman, uses the commonalities and strengths of Western astrology and Pagan green magic to introduce a hands-on astrological practice that incorporates intuition, spells, and other modes of folk magic into astrology.

Kaldera includes an extensive compendium of modern magical remedies to counteract negative astrological influences and shows how to use planetary energy to aid Pagan worship and green magic practice through spell casting, love magic, and shamanic stargazing. Kaldera also explains how to create planetary altars that enhance the astrological correspondences of traditional Pagan holidays using the tools of folk magic. Practitioners of green and folk magic and those who love traditional astrology will welcome this unique approach to planetary magic.

This is the most famous, the most celebrated astrology book in the English language. It has been prized by students ever since its first publication in 1647.The Horary Astrology in these pages, in the hands of a master, is no mere parlour game.It is demanding and precise, combining science and art.Properly used, it will give answer to any well-defined question.

In this volume:

4-0 out of 5 stars A monument of astrology
Very nice publication of a fundamental text for any (would-be) astrologer. Not really for beginners though, as rather much is assumed as common knowledge, and the style is dense. Book 2 (second part of published volume 1) is geared to previsions/horary matters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Horary Astrology Text
Christian Astrology is the most important book on horary astrology by probably the best ever horary astrologer William Lilly. It would be a hard choice, but I would have to say that if I could only have one astrology book, Christian Astrology would be it. As a professional astrologer I literally use it every day.

We are so lucky to be living at a time when this most classic of horary texts is so easily available. The debt that his contemporaries owed Lilly is clear when you see how much they stole right out of Christian Astrology. Christian Astrology has so much more detail on almost any horary question than any other traditional source. All traditional astrologers, whether natal, electional or horary, need a copy of this essential text!

The Astrology Classics version comes in two volumes, Books 1&2 of Christian Astrology in one volume and Book 3 in the other. You really need both, yes, I know that Book 3 is natal astrology, but there is all sorts of useful information in it for horary and vice versa. Get both volumes!

The Astrology Classics version is not a facsimile, it is in modern font with modernized spelling. It contains the original Lilly example charts along with modern, computer calculated versions of the chart examples. The pagination is the same as the original and the marginal comments and glosses are included as well. The Astrology Classics version also contains the original index now alphabetized more consistently and a new glossary.

If you are serious about horary astrology, particularly if you are practicing horary, you are probably going to want a copy of Christian Astrology in hard copy or book form. It is a whole lot easier to flip through this way.

Astrology Classics has really done a great job with this version. The layout is clean and appealing and the books are quite reasonably priced. If you want a copy of Christian Astrology in book form, this is the one to get! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars buy something else
This book offers very little explanation of things that matter most. I got much better understanding of how astrology affects people's attitude from a local newspaper horoscope. Good thing was that this book was not expensive. If you are looking for something more thorough, find something else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Anyone Interested in Chinese Horoscopes
This book will take anyone through the process of creating a horoscope in the Chinese Zodiac. No outside information is needed - everything is in the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly accurate
I didn't really know what to expect when I picked up this book, but I was more than pleasantly surprised. Not only does it provide you with all the information you want to know about the twelve animal signs and animal compatibility, but it also provides you with additional more specific readings related to the month and hour of your birth, your life's path according to the sixty-year cycle, and other interesting things like the "noble good fortune stars", "yearly gods" and "career stars" (indicating where your natural talent lies in terms of work). It may seem a bit overwhelming with all the charts, but if you patiently follow the instructions, which are very clear, you can easily find the relevant information and reading for your horoscope.I was surprised how accurate my reading was.

4-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful introduction to Eastern horoscopes
This is a very attractive book that covers a lot of ground in Chinese astrology. It's based on the familiar twelve animals, of course, but it makes a point of noting that the cycle actually continues for 60 years rather than 12, with each animal being linked in turn with one of the fiveChinese elements--you may know that you were born in the Year of the Ram,but are you a Prosperous Ram, a Lonely Ram or a Ram Respected byOthers?

The book also includes information on your birth hour, birth dayand birth month (by the Chinese lunar calendar)--there's information inhere on how your month interacts with your year, making Chinese astrologymore dynamic than it sometimes is presented. Various combination of hour, month and year give you such interesting sidelights as your Career Star, your Animal Bone Fortune and your Yearly God.

There's not much about thetheory or philosophy behind Chinese astrology, which may be good or baddepending on your point of view.I took off a star from my rating becausethere are a couple of typos in the charts that make them a bitconfusing--you can figure out what they're supposed to say, but hopefullythese will be caught in later editions.Still, I recommend this book as agood introduction to the subject, and an excellent gift choice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for the uninitiated
I picked up this book about 10 years ago.At the time I had about as much knowledge of astrology as you can get from the newspaper i.e. none.It is chock full of information about just about everything.Particularly useful for students starting out is getting familiar with the houses and the signs as they affect factors in your life, not just your overall personality. It does lack some information on nodes but for a beginner's text, that is just fine.

I have continued to study and now am an astrologer.I have a considerable library but I still find I use this book for many different reasons. The organization is great and the concise explanations are a godsend.I cannot say enough how glad I am to have bought this book when beginning my studies.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not sufficent
This book is a good reference for anyone interested in refreshing basic astrology, but it is a poor choice to use as a beginner's first book. One of the books major irritations is that the author changes the positions of planets which would traditionally be considered well placed, and does not provide an explaination for why he breaks from convention. For example, Mars is not considered dignified in Scorpio in this book and Venus is well placed in Aquarius?

I found it curious that he uses his own chart as the example, which would have been fine in itself, only by the end of the bookI doubted his ability to be impartial about it. In his description of Cancer he claims that it is the most misunderstood sign (not Aquarius?), but mentions nothing of the Cancerian tendency to believe that they are misunderstood when they are not. He also says almost nothing good about Scorpio (he doesn't have any placements in Scorpio himself), and spends the majority of his time on his own positions while neglecting everyone else's. Perhaps, the negative trait of his own Leo rising?

Another amusing thing about this book is that the chart he does provide as the example for the book is incorrect. In myversion of this book, figure 1 has Hewitt's Mars in Scorpio conjunct Neptune in Leo which is conjunct the Leo Ascendent. Well, it does not take a mathematician to figure out that Leo can only be conjunct Cancer or Virgo, or that Scorpio cannot be the sign on the 4th house cusp if Mars is in Scorpio in the 1st. Hewitt mention numerous times about how intelligent Gemini makes people( he has a stellum himself), but seems to forget the Gemini negative trait of spreading misinformation. He writes that Taurus people are not self aware, a statement usually true, but does not notice his own lack of self-awareness.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Rudimentary Introduction, but...
I learned a good deal of "basics" information from this book, which I suppose it what the author intended. However, there was also a good bit of information which I found lacking or not fully explained. For instance, although the author gives you a basic idea of how to determine the degree of aspect when two planets are in conjunction, he isn't particularly clear in advising how to determine aspects that spread across signs. For instance, you'd be left to thinking that you could count HOUSE PLACEMENTS rather than SIGNS to determine the degree of aspect, which is not true. Also, the "interpretations" in the last half of the book are very general and tend to become tiresome...so much so that I had to push myself to finish the book.Taken on the whole, it's still a worthy work for someone like me who's baseline knowledge was largely peripheral, but you may have to seek other sources to expound on what he does not explain.

2-0 out of 5 stars soo basic too basic infact, even for the beginner
This book is ok, but im not too keen on the way he writes - or more precisely the way he views people. He tends to put down those who are different from him, where as other astrologers tend to focus on the difficulties you are experiancing and how to overcome them.

The interpretations are about 3 sentances long and to be honest its not really worth the money.

I brought parkers astrology which covers the same things and far more for around the same price. I recomend you look into getting this one instead - its great value and also a brilliant resourse for other basic elements of astrology. Plus - its understandable for the beginner. You could also create a birth chart free on line at astro.com and use the parkers book to interpret it. (I sent off the free birth chart voucher that W. Hewit gives you about 6 months ago and still havent recieved it)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for ANYONE interested in Astrology
What can I say? It's the absolute best, must have book for ANYONE who has even a slight interest in Astrology. I've been an Astrology enthusiast for over 10 years now and even though my level is more in the intermediate to advanced range, I still find this as an invaluable, handy reference. It perfectly "walks" you through this fascinating, yet complex science in a simple and easy to understand format. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to go beyond those fun, yet very general and vague daily horoscopes you find in the paper. It even includes a mail in offer to get your own chart done! (At least my old copy does, not sure about the new edition)
This book will help you understand and interpret your chart to give you an enlightening and informative understanding of yourself.
It includes chapters that explain and interpret the meanings of all the twelve houses, the signs and their characteristics, the planets and their rulerships, even meanings to all possible aspects of your natal placements.
I really wish I had this book when I first developed an in-depth interest in Astrology. Again, A MUST HAVE FOR ANY ASTROLOGY ENTHUSIAST!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Friends on a Rotten Day
Having previously read Born on a Rotten day and laughing so hard I cried, I knew I couldn't miss Friends on a Rotten Day.Hazel Dixon-Cooper is a fresh of breath air and never has written a boring line. This book is strictly for us girls and for good reason. In it you learn everything about all your girlfriends and some.In each chapter there is a compatibility rating, or bond-ability rating. Also at the end of each chapter is a short bit on guy friends.Other than this book being totally hilarious, it was also very thorough and insightful.I have never seen the zodiac signs brought into the light of friendship, but I believe it should be.For once I completely and totally understood myself and not just my friends! This was a great book and I highly recommend it to all.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sun Sign Astrology on Steroids!
If you like cliches and astrology at the 2nd grade level you will find this book interestng.Reading this book is very much like looking at life through the eyes of a Junior High female.I know very few adult females that act like those depicted in the book. She only gives a few paragraphs to the male sex at the end of each chapter. Maybe she believes males don't have friends! Her book "Born on a Rotten Day" was so heavy handed on the negative sterotypes of Sun Signs astrology it was depressing. At least in this book she has put more emphasis on the positive traits of the various Signs. It is probably a sure bet that the author and the editor have never had to diagramed a sentence in their life. They probably don't even know what syntax means! It is full of street talk slang and some humor and wit but very little valid astrology. You would think she would understand that the orbit of Venus is between the Easth and the Sun, therefore Venus is never more than two signs away from the sign of the Sun. Capricorn cannot have Venus in Aries as stated on page 30.Then she continued to make the same mistake over and over concerning Venus and impossible Sun sign combinations.Taurus is not known as the "collector" of the Zodiac but Cancer is famous for that trait.Your Sun may be in a certain Sign but it's expression is very much modified and affected by the aspects from other planets and the earth's satellite, the Moon.In 44 years of interperting astrology charts I have only twice found a person's natal Sun not aspected by a any planet or the Moon. It is stated she is a research member of The American Federation of Astrologers. For many years the AFA was the only game in the USA but it has been far surpassed by many more astrology organizations that honor scholarship in Astrology. The AFA is so last century!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting book!!!
I purchased this on Amazon for my daughter's birthday as I already had read the book and found it to be quite accurate on who I pick as my circle of friends.I would recommend this to everyone who are already interested in the astrological signs of the zodiac. It really proves to be an interesting and entralling read.

Product Description
In this practical and straight-forward guide to Astrology, one of the oldest sciences in existence, Samael Aun Weor explains how to transform your daily life towards the acquisition of knowledge of your true nature, whose result is spiritual elevation, the emergence of natural wisdom, and a deep and pervasive love for humanity. Completely discarding complicated charts and memorization, one has only to rely on the Innermost Being: that divine Star at the heart of our existence. By awakening our consciousness, we experience directly our intimate relationship with our inner cosmos, who is but a reflection of the cosmos around us. That is why the ancient oracle proclaimed, "Man, know thyself, and thou shalt know the universe and it's Gods!"This edition contains three books in its covers: Zodiacal Course, Esoteric Treatise of Hermetic Astrology and The Manual of Practical Magic. In the first two books, Samael Aun Weor gives a complete discourse on the nature of Astrology. In today's world, the true nature and application of this science has been forgotten completely. In these works, Samael Aun Weor sheds the light of wisdom upon a science that is as ancient as the universe. In the third book, Samael Aun Weor gives the secrets of Theurgy, White Magic, which is the science of influencing nature's phenomena in the internal and external worlds under the guidance of Divine Will and Intelligence. The author writes: "The planets move, evolve and progress within the consciousness. The sidereal temples are within the consciousness. The human being is a zodiac and the zodiacal belt is within the consciousness."The ten Sephiroth of Kabbalah are the solar system. The seven inferior Sephiroth are the seven planets, and the crown formed by Kether, Chokmah and Binah, are the triune spiritual sun."These ten Sephiroth are within us and we must learn to manipulate them. We must learn how to transfer ourselves to the different stars in order to know the horoscopes of people."Conversing with the sidereal Gods, we will know our horoscope without the need for the much-boasted about arithmetic astrology."Arithmetic astrology was for the "Black Age." The age of "Astro-Theurgy" has now arrived!" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars In-Depth
Im not very well versed in the Occult or Religious, but this book written by the Master Samael Aun Weor has given me many insights into the nature of these teachings.

There is profound knowledge contained within the covers of this book... this is clearly evident or will be at some stage to the reader, the author goes deep into the meanings of each card of the Tarot. Samael Aun Weor is very thorough in his explanations, although I have found it necessary to often re-read certain sentences, paragraphs etc in order to grasp intellectually due to the profoundness of the text.

This book is not just about the Tarot or how to use the Tarot cards, its much more than that... the author goes very deep into the esoteric, with in-depth explanations about the Tree of Life and the varying Dimensions that the Tree of Life unfolds into, deep mysteries are revealed to the reader... but one can go even deeper via Meditation if they know how to.

There are practical exercises also present throughout this book which im sure many will find very useful. Be prepared as you will be confronted with astounding information, highly classified military secrets do not compare to this type of information that was once kept hidden, this information is completely exposed for a reason... there is not much time left.

I highly recommend this book to anybody, if you can read.. make use of your reading ability with this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally some Practical Astrology!
Modern Astrology is mostly rubbish and written for the entertainment of wishful thinkers, there is little that is practical in any of it. Samael Aun Weor comes to the rescue of this problem with his wonderful work entitled "Astrotheurgy."

This book is 100% practical. Samael Aun Weor gives exercises for each sign of the zodiac to be performed during the sign's period. He also gives a clear and precise explanation of each sign, as well as the influences that govern individuals from each sign.

The publishers were kind enough to include two more of Samael's works into this one book (a 3 in 1). The second part of this work goes into further detail of the signs of the zodiac and the third part gives practical exercises for practicing White Magic.

I just recieved this book a couple of days ago and am having an extremely hard time keeping my eyes off of it. This book from the Venerable Master is another esoteric masterpiece that gets to the heart of the science of language of all the world's religions: Kabbalah and the Tarot.

Readers should be warned that this is rather advanced book in the Gnostic Library from the tradition of Samael Aun Weor and should be prepared for some heavy reading and meditation.

1-0 out of 5 stars Out there without a net
My main problem with this book is that although there is some interesting information and pictures in it, the author seems to be pretty much of a nut case. He is convinced that he is some kind of superior being who has achieved the depths of all knowledge, but I have not found any of his material to be all that useful, and in places (often significant places), it is just downright weird and confusing. It is often hard to escape the impression that he is being deliberately vague or confusing simply to sound more knowing or profound.

Anyone who is interested in an introduction to the Tarot and the Qabalah would be much better served by a book such as "Qabalistic Tarot" by Robert Wang, or even "The Mystical Qabala" by Dion Fortune (although the latter is much more focused on the Qabala than the Tarot).

1-0 out of 5 stars Huge Disappointment
I had high hopes for this work, based on some of the other reviews here and the description of the book. What I found after starting to read is a book that goes against what the vast majority of other texts and schools consider to be the correct attributions for the card meanings when applying Hebrew letters. This was the first major diversion from other widely known and accepted principles, and it just got worse from there. This book seems highly slanted toward a 'christian' gnosticism viewpoint, and might as well be a book of dogma. I was not impressed at all by this.

The author's reasoning for all of this is that he has "experienced" his gnosis as opposed to others who "just write about it" but have never really experienced it. I think this is a rather egocentric viewpoint coming from someone who was supposedly enlightened to begin with. I don't buy it, and don't buy into all of the dogma associated with what he is purporting to be 'enlightenment', either.

I don't recommend this book, and further don't recommend his philosophy on enlightenment, either. In fact, from other people's statements on his works and reputation, he and his followers are very dogmatic and cultish. From the writing in this book, I can see how that could be easily true. ...
