Product Description
Sited at the furthest limits of the Neolithic revolution and standing at the confluence of the two great sea routes of prehistory, Britain and Ireland are distinct from continental Europe for much of the prehistoric sequence. In this landmark study - the first significant survey of the archaeology of Britain and Ireland for twenty years - Richard Bradley offers a new interpretation of the unique archaeological record of these islands based on a wealth of current and largely unpublished data.Bradley surveys the entire archaeological sequence over a 4,000 year period, from the adoption of agriculture in the Neolithic period to the discovery of Britain and Ireland by travellers from the Mediterranean during the later pre-Roman Iron Age. Significantly, this is the first modern account to treat Britain and Ireland on equal terms, offering a detailed interpretation of the prehistory of both islands. ... Read more

Product Description
The two volumes of The Archaeology of Medieval Europe will together comprise the first complete account of medieval archaeology across Europe. Archaeologists from academic institutions in fifteen countries are collaborating to produce these two books of sixteen thematic chapters each. In addition, every chapter will feature a number of 'box-texts', by specialist contributors, highlighting sites or themes of particular importance. The books will be comprehensively illustrated throughout, in both colour and b/w, including line drawings and specially commissioned maps.

This ground-breaking set, which is divided chronologically into two (Vol. 1 extending from the Eighth to Twelfth Centuries AD, and Vol. 2 from the Twelfth to Sixteenth Centuries - to appear 2008), will enable readers to track the development of different cultures, and of regional characteristics, throughout the full extent of medieval Catholic Europe. In addition to revealing shared contexts and technological developments, the complete work will also provide the opportunity for demonstrating the differences that were inevitably present across the Continent - from Iceland to Italy, and from Portugal to Finland - and to study why such differences existed. ... Product Description
In 1958 Gordon R. Willey and Philip Phillips first published Method and Theory in American Archaeology - a volume that went through five printings, the last in 1967 at the height of what became known as the new, or processual, archaeology. The advent of processual archaeology, according to Willey and Phillips, represented a "theoretical debate...a question of whether archaeology should be the study of cultural history or the study of cultural process." Willey and Phillips suggested that little interpretation had taken place in American archaeology, and their book offered an analytical perspective; the methods they described and the structural framework they used for synthesizing American prehistory were all geared toward interpretation. Method and Theory served as the catalyst and primary reader on the topic for over a decade. This facsimile reprint edition of the original University of Chicago Press volume includes a new foreword by Gordon R. Willey, which outlines the state of American archaeology at the time of the original publication, and a new introduction by the editors to place the book in historical context. The bibliography is exhaustive.Academic libraries, students, professionals, and knowledgeable amateurs will welcome this new edition of a standard-maker among texts on American archaeology. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A True Archaeological Classic
This book is consistently cited in nearly all works on archaeological theory for the past fifty years - and rightfully so.Willey and Phillips' observations on the state of archaeology in their own time, and on the cultural phases of Native American societies, formed much of the basis for all of the works that came after.

I highly recommend this book in its entirety for anyone interested in archaeology or anthropology.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Vision of the Past in an Archaeological Classic
This book was written in the 1940's about archaeological digs which took place on the Gulf Coast of Florida between 1920 - 1945 or so.Gordon Willey, the book's author, was trying to create a "grand synthesis" of what had been discovered to date about the Native American cultures of Florida's Gulf Coast.

For the archaeologist, this book is fascinating because Willey literally created several of the "culture types" still used to define several of Florida's Native peoples, such as the Fort Walton culture, the Weeden Island culture, and the Safety Harbor culture.Since many of these sites were destroyed either during excavations or thereafter through development, Willey's detailed accounts of the sites and their excavation, as well the artifacts and features found therein, are our only source for understanding site patterns, cultural processes, and the nature and form of these sites.

For an ordinary reader - particularly a reader who lives in Florida, especially in the region around Tampa Bay or the Panhandle - Willey's accounts give us a picture of a region before its destruction by development, as well as a picture of the past. The modern resident of Sarasota or Bradenton, of Largo or Clearwater, of Pasco, may be astonished to learn that, before Parrish was a series of "upscale developments" surrounded by orange groves, there was a series of mound complexes there which were thriving communities when De Soto arrived in 1539; that the great mound at Safety Harbor was likely the principal town of the Tocobaga, and that many other such mounds once existed nearby; and that, before Tampa Bay was an endless series of subdivisions, it was the heartland of several great cultures which were both among the first to feel the storm of European contact, and among the first to disappear thereafter.

This is a very good and interesting book, and I highly recommend it to both archaeologists and the general public alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Behind the Scenes at the Imperial Capital
I went to Rome last March and took this book with me. Although it is not designed as a guidebook (it is heavy on foot-notes, further references etc) it encouraged me to go and visit some of the lesser known sites of Rome where archaeologists have recently been working. I loved the chapter on food supply especially and went to see Monte Testaccio, a pile of broken pots discarded from the boats that carried wine up the Tiber. It's extraordinary - as high as a natural hill - and the book gave full details of the internal structure, the types of vessel that made up the pile, and some of the statistics for how much alcohol Rome consumed. There are some other great chapters too and the authors are well-known experts: Kathleen Coleman, who wrote the chapter on sports and pastimes, was the technical advisor for the Russell Crowe movie Gladiator. Anyway, all in all, a really fascinating read and bang up-to-date on the continuing work archaeologists are doing in Rome to expose daily life, behind the glitzy imperial facade. ... Read more

Product Description
As a Federal archaeologist and a Choctaw Indian, Joe Watkins is uniquely qualified to speak about the relationship between American Indians and archaeologists. Tracing the often stormy relationship between the two, Watkins highlights the key arenas where the two parties intersect: ethics, legislation, and archaeological practice. Watkins describes cases where the mixing of indigenous values and archaeological practice has worked well--and some in which it hasn't--both in the United States and around the globe. He surveys the attitudes of archaeologists toward American Indians through an inventive series of of hypothetical scenarios, with some eye-opening results. And he calls for the development of Indigenous Archaeology, in which native peoples are full partners in the key decisions about heritage resources management as well as the practice of it. Watkins' book is an important contribution in the contemporary public debates in public archaeology, applied anthropology, cultural resources management, and Native American studies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For students of archaeology and Native American studies
In writing Indigenous Archaeology: American Indian Values And Scientific Practice,Joe Watkins draws upon his experience and expertise as a federal archaeologist and a Choctaw to address Native American sensitivities and the modern practices of archaeology. Tracing the often controversial and confrontational relationship between these two opposing perspectives, Watkins articulately highlights the key arenas where the parties intersect including ethics, legislation, and archaeological practices. Indigenous Archaeology draws upon incidents where the mixing of indigenous values and archaeological practice were successful, and others where such accommodations failed. Finally, Watkins calls for the development of an "indigenous archaeology" for use in the United States and around the globe that would accept native peoples as full partners in the key decisions about heritage resources management and archaeological practices. Indigenous Archaeology is very highly recommended reading for students of archaeology and Native American studies. ... Read more

Product Description

This record of precolumbian Florida brings to life the 12,000-year story of the native American Indians who lived in the state.  Using information gathered by archaeological investigations, many carried out since 1980, Jerald Milanich describes the indigenous cultures and explains why they developed as they did. In a richly illustrated book that will appeal to profes-sional and avocational archaeologists, scholars, tourists, and local history buffs, Milanich introduces the material heritage of the first Floridians through the interpretation of artifacts and archaeological sites.  Weaving together discoveries from such sites as the Lake Jackson mounds in the panhandle, Crystal River on the Gulf coast, and Granada on the Miami River, he relates the long histories of the native groups whose descendants were decimated during the European conquest of the sixteenth and seventeenth cen-turies.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Florida Archaeology
This book, published in 1994, is still the standard reference for anyone wanting to understand the archaeology of the Native American cultures of Florida up to the time of European contact in the early 1500's.

Dr. Milanich begins with the earliest Native American cultures known in Florida (or anywhere in the Americas), the Paleoindians, arriving more than 12,000 years ago.He traces the growth of Native American cultures through the Early, Middle, and Late Archaic periods, and examines what we know of the cultures of northern, central, and southern Florida - ending with the St. Johns II, Fort Walton, Safety Harbor, and Caloosahatchee cultures, which were, respectively, the Timucuan, Apalachee, Tocobaga, and Calusa known to us from the historic records.

Milanich is extremely readable, and his work provides clear, fascinating, and important detail about each of the cultures known to archaeology from this entire region. For those who mistakenly think Florida's Native cultures were limited to the Seminoles, this book shows how the peoples of Florida, the first in all North America to encounter Europeans, were among the most powerful and complex societies north of the peoples of Mesoamerica.

Whether you're an archaeologist or historian specializing in studies of the people of this region, or a general reader with an interest in Native American culture and history - buy this book. It's excellent and enjoyable reading. ... Read more

Ohio Archaeology chronicles these landmark discoveries in a book written by Dr. Bradley T. Lepper, Curator of Archaeology of the Ohio Historical Society. The Sociey for American Archaeology chose this book for its Public Audience Book Award. It is a fine choice.

This beautiful book has many things to recommend it: the importance of the subject, the beauty of the artwork and the photography, the quality of the contributors and the masterful presentation by its author, Dr. Bradley T. Lepper.

Ohio is loaded with treasure for archaeologists. Not one but four ancient Ohio sites are likely to receive World Heritage status from UNESCO in the next few years. These include Fort Ancient, the Newark Earthworks, the Serpent Mound and the earthworks at the HopewellCulture National Historical Park in Chillicothe. Just this winter the U.S.Department of the Interior has released a list of fourteen sites it will present to UNESCO for consideration - including all of these. And of course Ohio has even more amazing ancient places and stories to offer.

Such treasures call for stunning images, and there are many here. There are also fascinating contributions by more than twentyof the world's authorities on ancient Ohio. It is hard to imagine a better team to teach this subject. But this is more than a coffee-table book andis not an anthology of independent articles.Bradley Lepper leads us through the story from the ice age to the era of early contact between American Indians and Europeans. He writes wonderfully and is the master of both science and story telling.

As a long time citizen of Ohio and long time fan of Archaeology, I should have had a much higher awareness of just how much incredible history there is to be had right here in my home state. While I always had a vague notion that people have lived here in Ohio for thousands of years before the first European settlers arrived ... I never encountered any material that seemed to do a very good job of shedding light on this period of the state's history.Well, Mr. Lepper's book does a FANTASTIC job of bringing this part of our state's history the attention it deserves.Great text, diagrams and photos.

Product Description
This collection of chapters provides a forum for thecurrent research results and ideas on overseas Chinese archaeology. Itpresents a large body of history, methods, interpretation, andartifact analysis. In addition to those archaeologists specializing inChinese American history, Hidden Heritage will be of interest to allhistorical archaeologists and to scholars of Asian American studies, and to persons of Asian descent.

Beginning in the mid-nineteenth century, large numbers of people from mainland China emigrated to the United States and other countries seeking employment. Termed "overseas Chinese," they made lasting contributions to the development of early communities, an impact which has only begun to be recognized in recent years. "Chinatowns," rural mining claims, work camps for railroad and other construction activities, salmon canneries and shrimp camps, laundries, stores, cook shacks, cemeteries, and temples are only some of the sites where traces of their presence can be found. In recent years, numerous archaeological and historical investigations of the overseas Chinese have taken place, and Hidden Heritage presents the results of some of those studies.

Topics range from urban sites in several states to structures and garden terraces in wild and scenic parts of Idaho, and include mining, artifacts, foodways, cannery workers, and women, as well as some comparative material for New Zealand. The closing chapter summarizes method and theory to date.

Ethnic identification of the Chinese presence is made easier by the fact that the artifacts found on overseas Chinese archaeological sites invariably include ones that were either brought with them or imported by them. Their table ceramics, food and alcoholic beverage containers, medicinal bottles, gambling-related objects, and opium-smoking paraphernalia are quite different in appearance from objects used by Euroamericans, and many of them are illustrated in the various chapters. Because of the variety of the subject matter, the sum of bibliographies is extensive; the book is also indexed. ... Read more

I own this book and use it as a reference for architectural inventories and assessments.Field guides are in numerous abundance for residential architecture, but are severelylacking for industrial architecture. This book gets four stars from me as it is well written, easy to understand, contains great historical background of structure type, and such. However, it is lacking in the industrial building context.I was hoping to find some additional information pertaining to mid 19th Century to early 20th Century warehouse style architecture. That being said, I was not expecting the fantastic bridge, mining, and railroad structural information! This is a bonus and welcomed one, as I do many projects involving both.I think the illustrations are great too.I would like to see McVarish write a few more that work their way from the east coast to the west and demonstrate some of the regional modifications and adaptations of design and application.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment
While I haven't thoroughly reviewed this book, I am disappointed in a couple of areas. First, I was expecting coverage on mining and logging operations, which are what one would most likely encounter on trips into the wilds. Also, regarding railroading, the book does cover some modern signaling systems, which seem out of place, while ignoring the 19th, and also early 20th century, block systems that required block stations and train order signals, with accompanying foundations along the rights-of-way. Also, while exploring railroad yards, the one outstanding feature to look for and document would be the turntable pit. This should have received more coverage than a simple mention because it is the one foundation that would be unique. There were engine facilities without roundhouses, but the turntable would always be there. ... Read more

From an archaeologist's point of view, that the "artifact" used for show and tell is a wood hoop with strings (and would not be preserved in most archaeological contexts) is the minor problem. The major problem is that Great Aunt Jane, the archaeologist, has an "artifact" in her trunk instead of in a curation facility.Ethical archaeologists do not keep the artifacts they find. The book could have Arnold find a replica made of one of Auntie's discoveries. In its favor, the book does emphasize "it's not what you find [i.e. the artifact] but what you find out" that's important.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review
I liked reading this book, because it was easy to read and understand. I thought that the book was funny and interesting. The class had show and tell and Arnold brought something in to show that was very interesting. No one knew what it was. They try to find out what it is and where it came from by going on a trip with there teacher. By reading this book, you will find out what exactly happened on their trip and what it is what Arnold brought in for show and tell!

Product Description

What if Troy was not destroyed in the epic battle immortalized by Homer? What if many legendary cities of the ancient world did not meet their ends through war and conquest as archaeologists and historians believe, but in fact were laid waste by a force of nature so catastrophic that religions and legends describe it as the wrath of god? Apocalypse brings the latest scientific evidence to bear on biblical accounts, mythology, and the archaeological record to explore how ancient and modern earthquakes have shaped history--and, for some civilizations, seemingly heralded the end of the world.

Archaeologists are trained to seek human causes behind the ruins they study. Because of this, the subtle clues that indicate earthquake damage are often overlooked or even ignored. Amos Nur bridges the gap that for too long has separated archaeology and seismology. He examines tantalizing evidence of earthquakes at some of the world's most famous archaeological sites in the Mediterranean and elsewhere, including Troy, Jericho, Knossos, Mycenae, Armageddon, Teotihuacán, and Petra. He reveals what the Bible, the Iliad, and other writings can tell us about the seismic calamities that may have rocked the ancient world. He even explores how earthquakes may have helped preserve the Dead Sea Scrolls. As Nur shows, recognizing earthquake damage in the shifted foundations and toppled arches of historic ruins is vital today because the scientific record of world earthquake risks is still incomplete. Apocalypse explains where and why ancient earthquakes struck--and could strike again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Geology vs. Archaeology
Professor Nur asks us to consider the geologic evidence that conflicts at times with traditional archaeology. His arguments are persuasive and in my opinion should end up changing history. This is not the first time that two fields have been in conflict over history.Genetics has already left its mark.Similarly, archaeologists have been reluctant to accept evidence that catastrophic events, beyond the control of man, have been instrumental in changing cultures, society and empires. This book is fascinating and has the scientific evidence that supports views contrary to much tradition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Readable and well reasoned for the non-professional
As someone who is interested in archaeology, geology and anthropology, but not a "professional", I found this book straightforward and interesting. It explained the reluctance of archaeologists to designate earthquakes as the cause for a catastrophic failure of a city or society, and related other information that I did not know. I especially enjoyed how the author (a geologist) brought an outsiders' perspective into this specialized field. Truly an interdisciplinary effort that sheds light from one scientific discipline onto another.

5-0 out of 5 stars Earthquakes and History
The author's thesis is infrequent, very large earthquakes have had large influences on the course of history, especially in the Mid East and Eastern Medeterranean. He backs this with extensive evidence from sites as well as historical accounts.A well written, easy read; not too technical. It is a thought provoking book. How do we prepare for rare catastrophic events that occur only once every five or ten lifetimes?See also "The Black Swan" by Nassim Nicholas Taleb for a more philosophical discussion of the same general topic though Taleb approaches the subject from the financial world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much needed book in dialogue between archaeologiy and geology
Nur's book opens a much-needed dialogue between geology and archaeology regarding earthquakes. The book's value lies not only in its clarity and the logic of his suggested explanations but in the multiplicity of archaeological sites he presents where earthquakes and seismic activity are already long-established phenomena. Speculative or not, it is time to take his idea seriously that warfare is not necessarily the primary cause of destruction in ancient monuments and cities. Some of the most compelling research in the book is explained via copious use of photos with parallel fallen columns, crushed stacked artifacts and toppled wall course units - exactly as an earthquake positions architectural elements parallel to the direction of a seismic event - and excellent charts where Nur correlates proven high density and high intensity seismic activity with destroyed historic sites, e.g. Selinunte, Susita, Masada, Megiddo, Thebes (Greece), Qumran, Alexandria, Teotihuacán, etc., in historically active fault and rift zones. While not everyone will agree, the door Nur has opened cannot now be so easily shut. Whether or not his thesis is ultimately provable given the antiquity of so many possible events is not even the point of his somewhat controversial book, but Nur is right that archaeologists too frequently do not understand or too quickly dismiss the role of geophysics in history, and his sensible call to reexamine the physical evidence is timely. As a geoarchaeologist who has visited many of the historic sites Nur analyzes and also with training at the intersection of geology and archaeology, I highly recommend this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Shallower than the quakes described
This book is, I regret to say, a shallow look at earthquakes. It presents and represents numerous times, the authors contention, probably valid, that archeologists don't give earthquakes enough credit for their negative effect on the ongoing civilizations affected. He also emphasizes that earthquakes can happen anywhere. But the descriptions become repetitive and to anyone already knowledgable about them, doesn't add significant new information.

Simply put, I was quickly bored by this tome. I didn't learn anything new except that archeologists don't give earthquakes enough credit for their total effects. And that wasn't worth the time to read these pages.

Product Description
This innovative work of historical archaeology illuminates the genesis of the Californios, a community of military settlers who forged a new identity on the northwest edge of Spanish North America. Since 1993, Barbara L. Voss has conducted archaeological excavations at the Presidio of San Francisco, founded by Spain during its colonization of California's central coast. Her research at the Presidio forms the basis for this rich study of cultural identity formation, or ethnogenesis, among the diverse peoples who came from widespread colonized populations to serve at the Presidio. Through a close investigation of the landscape, architecture, ceramics, clothing, and other aspects of material culture, she traces shifting contours of race and sexuality in colonial California. ...
