Excerpt: MesothelaeMygalomorphaeAraneomorphae See table of families Spiders (order Araneae) are air-breathing chelicerate arthropods that have eight legs, and chelicerae modified into fangs that inject venom. They are the largest order of arachnids and rank seventh in total species diversity among all other groups of organisms. Spiders are found worldwide on every continent except for Antarctica, and have become established in nearly every habitats with the exception of air and sea colonization. As of 2008, approximately 40,000 spider species, and 109 families have been recorded by taxonomists; however, there has been confusion within the scientific community as to how all these genera should be classified, as evidenced by the over 20 different classifications that have been proposed since 1900. Anatomically, spiders differ from other arthropods in that the usual body segments are fused into two tagmata, the cephalothorax and abdomen, and joined by a small, cylindrical pedicel. Unlike insects, spiders do not have antennae. In all except the most primitive group, the Mesothelae, spiders have the most centralized nervous systems of all arthropods, as all their ganglia are fused into one mass in the cephalothorax. Unlike most arthropods, spiders have no extensor muscles in their limbs and instead extend them by hydraulic pressure. Their abdomens bear appendages that have been modified into spinnerets that extrude silk from up to six types of silk glands within their abdomen. Spider webs vary widely in size, shape and the amount of sticky thread used. It now appears that the spiral orb web may be one of the earliest forms, and spiders that produce tangled cobwebs are more abundant and diverse than orb-web sp...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=38391 ... Excerpt:The Bugs are a fictional extraterrestrial race in the novel Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein , its film adaptation (and its first and second sequels and spin-off television series ), sometimes also referred to as the Arachnids , although this is a misnomer, as the aliens are not related to Earth arachnids . The Bugs in the film differ considerably from those in the novel, which calls the Bugs Pseudo-Arachnids . Meanwhile, Mongoose Publishing 's Starship Troopers: The Miniatures Game refers to them as the Arachnid Empire . In the third film in the franchise , the bugs are referred to as "Archie" , similar to nicknames given to Germans ("Jerry") and the Vietnamese ("Charlie") in their respective wars.Differences between the film and the novel The Bugs in the film are portrayed as generally mindless insectoid beings, ruled and organized by an extremely intelligent overmind . However, at the beginning of the film, when Rico and Carmen dissect Arkellian sand beetles, the biology teacher states that the Bugs have millions of years of evolution behind them and are, in the case of survival capability, the perfect species. They have the ability to colonize planets "by hurling their spore into space" and possess a social structure which fits their mental capabilities. In the novel, it is established that the Bugs have spacecraft , beam weapons and other adva... ... Excerpt: Oggy and the Cockroaches (also known as Oggy et les Cafards in French) is a French animated series produced by Gaumont Film Company, creator of the popular series Space Goofs. The show centers on Oggy, a content and lazy, albeit very tender fat blue cat, who would usually spend his days watching TV and cooking - if it wasn't for the three pesky roaches in the household: Joey, Dee Dee and Marky (named after members of the punk group Ramones). The trio seems to enjoy generally making Oggy's life miserable, which involves mischief ranging from (in most cases) plundering his fridge to such awkward things like hijacking the train Oggy just boarded. The cartoon itself relies on slapstick humour, much like its "ancestor", Tom and Jerry, only amplifying the level of extremities up a notch; while "traditional" slapstick cartoon characters prefer dropping anvils and pianos on each other, this show sometimes uses even buses or submarines. Despite these however, most gags are easily accessible and enjoyable for younger viewers. Since dialog is kept to a minimum the humour is entirely visual. The additional voices for characters were do...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1263058 ... Read more
