Product Description
In recent years anthropologists have turned from previous concerns with salvaging the shreds of cultures to a concern with people whose rights to food, home, health, and other basic human necessities are continually threatened.
This volume provocatively questions the priorities of much anthropological work and urges the discipline to make a stronger commitment to the study of a world on the move, a world in constant change which must be engaged. The volume demonstrates the theoretical productivity of engagement in contemporary problems, and the importance of addressing these issues if theory is to advance and deal with the constant creativity of human societies.
The scholar contributors were selected by the American Anthropological Association to examine transformations and disorders taking place in pre-industrial and industrializing societies with a view to how the discipline might best be able to contribute to the understanding and amelioration of such problems. Individual essays take up questions of development, the media, hunger, health, and appropriate research methods.
This volume is, directly and indirectly, a constructive critique of the way anthropology is commonly practiced and of the way anthropologists are still being trained. It is essential reading for all who are concerned with the future of this discipline.
Emilio F. Moran is Professor of Anthropology, Indiana University, and Director, Anthropological Center for Training and Research on Global Environmental Change.

Product Description
A serious study of male hustlers using experiential dialogue to introduce the reader to real-life concepts and experiences that otherwise could not be effectively conveyed. This book is an attempt to get into the mind and personality of the male hustler through a largely imagined series of dialogues between a well-known fictional hustler and his so-called amanuensis, Samuel Steward. It endeavors to cover all aspects of the hustler's motivations, activities, life style, adjustment, advantages, disadvantages. It tries to accomplish this dispassionately, without prejudgment, moral censure, approvation, or more than cursory involvement. Its conclusions are empirical - based solely on the observations of hundreds of hustlers during more than 20 years spent in the operation of a shop specializing in dermagraphics, a natural gathering-point for male prostitutes. Therapists and counselors in all fields of sexual functioning may find here some understanding of the causes and impulses (beyond the popular "broken home syndrome") which lead young males into prostitution. It is also intended to signal some of the signposts to danger and serious threats to health that accompany the profession of prostitution. It may also explain to counselors some of the activities and practices of the male prostitute, enabling them to better understand both the fascination and the peril of the hustler's life. Among the hustlers, however, the acceptance of such cautionary advice depends on their intelligence and willingness to confront the daily hazards of their existence. The brevity of success in such a calling is also considered, with some consideratuon for the necessity of long-range planning for the hustler's future. ... Read more

Product Description
Anthropology is generally thought of as the study of exotic peoples in far-away lands. However, anthropologists have a long history of less exotic, applied “get-your-hands-dirty work.” As a nation of immigrants, the United States has enjoyed a reputation as a model for democracy and a place where newcomers’ dreams can come true. As such, this Bulletin could only have been written in the United States, home to so many immigrants from so many lands, who adapt in different and unique ways to form what we consider the nation. Comparatively little has been written about anthropologists engaged with immigrant communities. In fact, it is somewhat shocking that anthropologists—and historians—seem to have forgotten to document this important contribution to the extent that we have documented our far-away travels and studies.

This Bulletin is one such attempt. In it, we present a variety of perspectives, viewpoints, insights, and experiences of anthropologists who are actively engaged with immigrant communities across the United States, offering case studies from Florida, California, North Carolina, Texas, and Pennsylvania. Representing both university-based and NGO-based applied anthropologists, the authors discuss how deep, long-term engagement with immigrants has impacted our anthropological practice and how it in turn has shaped both theory and praxis. We share the personal and the professional, our challenges and our successes. The authors explore the nuances of our simultaneous, multiple roles vis-à-vis the immigrants themselves, the consequences of generational changes within our immigrant populations and how state policies, migration shifts and post-9/11 group responses have affected both our work and our multiple roles with communities. We present recommendations, lessons learned and future opportunities for U.S.-based anthropologists working with our unique brand of “exotic”—mainly Mexican and Latin American immigrants in 21st-century United States.

Product Description
This is the first exploration of modern Australian social anthropology which examines the forces that helped shaped its formation. In his new work, Geoffrey Gray reveals the struggle to establish and consolidate anthropology in Australia as an academic discipline. He argues that to do so, anthropologists had to demonstrate that their discipline was the predominant interpreter of Indigenous life. Thus they were able, and called on, to assist government in the control, development and advancement of Indigenous peoples.Gray aims to help us understand the present organisational structures, and assist in the formulation of anthropology's future role in Australia; to provide a wider political and social context for Australian social anthropology, and to consider the importance of anthropology as a past definer of Indigenous people. Gray's work complements and adds to earlier publications: Wolfe's "Settler Colonialism" and the "Transformation of Anthropology", McGregor's "Imagined Destinies" and Anderson's "Cultivating Whiteness". ...
