5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
Found this by serendipity in the main map shop in Barcelona.

I am the Director of a small disability charity and the description of how the author's disabilities led to him seeing the world differently as this superb book describes and then put it into practice is awe inspiring.

Should be a core text for anyone in the caring professions so they seriously learn how to empower people by showing them how to use powerful tools to enable change.

And I note it is not referenced in the visual anthropology section of wiki!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dictionary of Anthropology, Barfield (1997)
Barfield provides concise but fairly nuanced summaries of a broad selection of significant terms and themes in sociocultural anthropology. I have recommended it as a supplementary resource for upper-level undergraduates in classical theory as well as thematic courses for several years. It hasn't been updated since 1997, which is a shame, but it is nonetheless an excellent desk reference. I'd love to see a new edition of this book. Note that the cross-references at the end of most entries point the reader to additional pages that often provide relevant information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rebuttal
I have found this book to be extremely helpful in my graduate studies in anthropology (M.A., Ph.D. at Michigan State University). I don't know what the reviewer means by calling this book an "[...] attempt to legitimize anthropology." Those of us practicing anthropology (not to mention all those that have practiced it in the last 100 years or so), know that anthropology is very "legitimate" and essential to the future of the social sciences within the modern academy. No general reference book is perfect, but I highly recommend this as a refresher for general anthropological concepts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
This dictionary is just another long-winded, pretentious, unreadable, high-brow attempt to legitimize anthropology. The authors of each definition are more concerned with impressing their peers than giving the average person clear insight to cultural anthropology. If you are struggling through a cultural anthropology class, and are looking for a dictionary with clear definitions, forget this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Dictionary of Anghropology
I have this book since I purchased in April 1999 and has been a very handyresource for me whenever I need it. This dictionary has been very helpfulfor me to pinpoint terminologies which sometimes left vauge in my mindsince I left the department of anthropologies during my graduate studiesquite a long time ago. As a reference book I don't use it every day butit's always a part of my collection and ready whenever I need it.

Thismorning I discovered that something is missing in this book. Alldictionaries I have alway started from A to Z. Whatever happened to thisbook, by accident or by design, this dictionary doesn't have any wordstarted with letter X, Y and Z. It has only words from A to W which remindsme to a brand name of Rootbeer A&W.

I checked the page number on thelast word of letter W. It is page 501. Then on page 502 it starts withBibliografy and ends on page 626, a long 124 pages of A to Z author'sname.

My question to the Editor Thomas Barfield and/or the PublisherBlackwell Publisher, Ltd is what's happening to the words starting with X,Y, and Z? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well planned and easy to understand
Compared to some anthropology textbooks this one is quite easy to read.It is a first edition so it has a couple minor errors, but nothing too bad.It also doesn't explain some of the contentious points of anthropology, which may confuse some who stumble upon them through research, but I guess that is inevitable for a beginning book.

Flesh and Bone: An Introduction to Forensic Anthropology offers the reader a solid background in forensic anthropology by out- lining some of the methods and procedures that best define the discipline. It introduces readers to the rapidly growing area known as forensic science, providing a comprehensive look at many of the participants in the field. Nafte avoids technical terminology whenever possible and includes photographs, charts, and illustrations to complement the text.

The book evolves sequentially, beginning with a discussion of all things forensic and then continuing to detail the broad field of anthropology, the process of death, decomposition, and skeletonization. Methods of identifying the human skeleton, DNA analysis, and the reconstruction of identity are highlighted. The final chapter deals with the modern application of forensic anthropology to human rights missions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Language is Power
I just finished reading Alesandro Duranti's 1997 book for my linguistic anthropology core class. I wanted to take the opportunity here to comment on this book. A. Duranti goes through all of the major theoretical underpinnings and morphological manifestations that the discipline has endured since its inception from the likes of Boas and Sapir in the early 20th century. It has changed and gone through many necessary changes during its lifetime. In order to truly place our finger on the intentions of the "other," we must strive to open a dialogue with the "other" through the practice of speaking, analysis of discourse, and make assumptions based on interpretations to better understand the cultural baggage each one of us carries. This is healthy and natural, and summarizes what it means to be human. Linguistic anthropology taps into human psychology, and the social enterprise in many ways that I have never been able to imagine. A. Duranti eloquently explains linguistic anthropology's rightful place as a science and a discipline worthy of perpetuation in posterity. I sincerely hope others read it in order to assist in this perpetuation of what it means to be human through the practice of speaking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Liked its approach
Reading this book I felt Duranti to be less of a linguist and more of an anthropologist--which I found to be a useful approach, giving quite a different perspective on the field than, for example, William Foley's book of similar title. Especially interesting were the sections on fieldworkmethodology and ethics, a topic which I haven't seen covered in other bookson linguistic anthropology. However, some of the linguistic stuff couldhave been explained in more detail, and Duranti doesn't include as much onrecent perspectives as some others. ... Read more

Product Description
An Anthropology of Biomedicine is an exciting new introduction to biomedicine and its global implications. Focusing on the ways in which the application of biomedical technologies bring about radical changes to societies at large, cultural anthropologist Margaret Lock and her co-author physician and medical anthropologist Vinh-Kim Nguyen develop and integrate the thesis that the human body in health and illness is the elusive product of nature and culture that refuses to be pinned down.

  • Introduces biomedicine from an anthropological perspective, exploring the entanglement of material bodies with history, environment, culture, and politics
  • Develops and integrates an original theory: that the human body in health and illness is not an ontological given but a moveable, malleable entity
  • Makes extensive use of historical and contemporary ethnographic materials around the globe to illustrate the importance of this methodological approach
  • Integrates key new research data with more classical material, covering the management of epidemics, famines, fertility and birth, by military doctors from colonial times on
  • Uses numerous case studies to illustrate concepts such as the global commodification of human bodies and body parts, modern forms of population, and the extension of biomedical technologies into domestic and intimate domains

    Product Description

Over the past several decades, scholars in both the social sciences and humanities have moved beyond the idea that there is a “body proper”: a singular, discrete biological organism with an individual psyche. They have begun to perceive embodiment as dynamic rather than static, as experiences that vary over time and across the world as they are shaped by discourses, institutions, practices, technologies, and ideologies. What has emerged is a multiplicity of bodies, inviting a great many disciplinary points of view and modes of interpretation. The forty-seven readings presented in this volume range from classic works of social theory, history, and ethnography to more recent investigations into historical and contemporary modes of embodiment.

Beyond the Body Proper includes nine sections conceptually organized around themes such as everyday life, sex and gender, and science. Each section is preceded by interpretive commentary by the volume’s editors. Within the collection are articles and book excerpts focused on bodies using tools and participating in rituals, on bodies walking and eating, and on the female circumcision controversy, as well as pieces on medical classifications, spirit possession, the commodification of body parts, in vitro fertilization, and an artist/anatomist’s “plastination” of cadavers for display. Materialist, phenomenological, and feminist perspectives on embodiment appear along with writings on interpretations of pain and the changing meanings of sexual intercourse. Essays on these topics and many others challenge Eurocentric assumptions about the body as they speak to each other and to the most influential contemporary trends in the human sciences.

For undergraduate-level courses in Ethnographic Field Methods and Introduction to Cultural Anthropology.Unlike other ethnographic field manuals -- which are either written for the graduate or professional levels or are narrowly restrictive in their methodological approach -- this manual focuses specifically on the needs of introductory-level students. It takes them by the hand and leads them step-by-step through the entire process -- through tasks that range from simple to complex and that invite students to use their own lives as tools to understand various categories of culture. This task-oriented and reflective approach makes this the first field manual to emphasize the investigative instrument (the ethnographer) as well as the cultural situations, informants, and techniques of analysis. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Learn ethnography by doing ethnography.
This ethnography book does not read like a textbook, and it is not intended to be one.Instead, it is a project manual, briefly outlining five ethnographic assignments, and then including a number of papers from various students as examples.

The book is deliberately low on theory, and approaches ethnography from a more postmodern point of view, encouraging students to be reflexive and to write of their personal experiences and emotions. At the same time, the author states the importance of separating data from analysis, to help the ethnographer be more objective. The analysis of the data, where the ethnographer interprets the motives and emotions, is important but separate. He also gives further readings at the end of each assignment, knowing that this book does not go into much depth in either theory or practice.

The whole purpose of this book is teach ethnography by doing ethnography. The first three assignments are short and are designed to get the inexperienced student started in ethnography. The project descriptions are only about two pages long, and then each assignment has several example papers. The first is the map and description of a block, the second is a retrospective assignment on private language, and the third assignment is to study body language. All of these assignments help to sharpen the eye of the student in areas where they need to be observant.

The final two assignments are much bigger. One is a study on ritual, and the final assignment Kutsche calls "The Big Ethnography."This project is designed to last about a month. The final 100 pages of the book are devoted to eight exemplary student ethnographies.

Although the book was enjoyable to read, its strength really would come from actually doing the assignments, and if a class were not willing to do so, I think another book would be more appropriate. It is designed for an introductory class in ethnography, and is not written to be a reference for a field ethnographer, or for an advanced ethnography student.

In general I found the book somewhat refreshing in that it had short descriptions of the assignments, and then lots of case studies. For an introductory class in ethnography, it could be a good book if the professor was willing to have the students go through the assignments. But I would recommend the professor read the book through first before deciding to use it as a project manual. ... Product Description
This book is a brief, more affordable version of the Peoples and Bailey, HUMANITY: AN INTRODUCTION TO CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY, 8th Edition (2009). Its coverage of core topics, smaller size, and economical price make it well suited for users who wish to adopt a core book along with supplemental books such as readers and ethnographies. The book shares, in a briefer format, the same rich characteristics that made HUMANITY a best-seller over the years: strong scholarship, rich ethnographic examples and a unique focus on modern ethnicity and the survival of indigenous peoples. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I recieved this item in a short amount of time and the condition on the book was what the seller said it was going to be. Overall, very satisfied!!! Thanks

3-0 out of 5 stars Be careful of the details
I reviewed this book for possible inclusion in an Introductory Forensic Anthropology class I have been teaching for ten years. Two shortcomings in the text led me to adopt another book for the course:

    1. Photography: Whether because of the paper quality or the skills of the photographer, many of the photographs were grainy or too small to be useful.

    2. Accuracy:This is the third edition, and yet more than one method is misrepresented or mis-cited.An example is ectocranial suture closure, which specifies the wrong points on the skull for the vault system. In addition, the discussion of the post-mortem interval and the "precision" of these estimates is greatly at odds with others in the field, and may give students the impression that these techniques are more reliable than they really are.

It also should be noted that many of the diagrams, charts, and other essential information comes directly from other texts. For those interested in Forensic Anthropology and Osteology, "The Human Bone Manual" by White and Folkens and "Standards for Data Collection from Human Skeletal Remains" will provide a more useful treatment of these subjects.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book - Very informative.
A very informative text - lots of pictures - that doesn't go into too much detail so that you are bored reading it. Definitely gives good insight into the field of forensic anthropology - things television shows won't teach you. Overall a good text for an introduction into Forensic Anthropology. I haven't gotten very far in the text - as the semester has just recently begun - but I do wish that it was bundled with case studies. My professor gives a lot of examples, but he doesn't have them all and it would be interesting if there wascase study that applied the subjects of every chapter. That way, you could see how important each step is in solving cases. ... Read more
