Product Description

Nuclear Import and Export in Plants and Animals provides insight into the remarkable mechanisms of nuclear import and export. This book covers a range of topics from the nuclear pore structure, to nuclear import and export of macromolecules in plant and animal cells. In addition, the book covers the special cases of nuclear import of Agrobacterium T-DNA during plant genetic transformation, nuclear import and export of animal viruses, and nuclear intake of foreign DNA. A chapter on research methods to study nuclear transport concludes the book.

Product Description
Intracellular junctions provide routes for direct cell-to-cell signalling in both plants and animals. The present volume treats the parallels and differences between such junctions in animals and plants and discusses the most recent methods of examining the physiological functions and regulation of intracellular communication. Strong evidence of both molecular as well as functional simiĀ§ larities between plasmodesmata and gap junctions is increasing. Even more interesting is the discovery that animal gap junction proteins cross-react immunologically with some proteins in plant cells. Thus the molecular construction and function of these crucially important ultrastructural cell components is now open to a concerted research effort to understand how cells, both plant and animal, facilitate and regulate intercellular transport. ... Having photographed animals in their native habitats around the world, from the misty rain forests of Costa Rica to the plains of Africa, the authors present an illustrated study of the behaviour of mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and insects. The brief essays that accompany the photographs are filled with fact and lore gleaned from observation, from research, and from frequent contact with zoologists and field biologists who specialize in the various species. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. William Osborne
This is a fabulous book that anyone who cares about and for animals would truly enjoy.Dr. Greg Dimijan is an professional photographer and his wife's contributions make it more than just a coffee table book.

From dung beetles to tigers they are here for you to see and read about.

I keep several copies on hand to give as presents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite nature photography and insightful commentary.
Greg and Mary Beth Dimijian have produced a book full of wonderful images of animals, animal behavior, and animal habitats around the world. Each image is coupled with a short but insightful essay which expounds upon the behavior illustrated, or the circumstances of taking the photograph, or simply makes a point about the environment, evolution, or biology. Greg Dimijian, a former clinical psychologist, and his wife, Mary Beth, have travelled the world from the tropics to antarctica and present a dazzling array of dynamic and beautiful images. The essays, with their up-to-date discussions of behavioral theory and biology are written for the layman, but are fascinating and concisely written. There is also a delightful foreward by Jane Goodall. A wonderful gift for anyone with a love of animals, biology, or photography ... Read more

All such structures are believed to have been derived from some common ancestral, more generalized type of structure and to have diverged in various directions. The generalization that the ancestral history of a structure is repeated during embryonic development is known as the Biogenetic Law or the Recapitulation Theory. It is one of the arguments in favor of the theory of organic evolution.A. EMBRYONIC ORIGIN OF VERTEBRATE LIMBS1. Limb Buds of a Toad or a Frog Tadpole.la. Examine tadpoles showing a very early stage in the development of the hind legs. Note the rounded prominences, the hind limb buds, at the base of the tail. Draw an outline of the whole animal, two inches long, in side view, and make the limb buds dark.16. In an older embryo observe that each limb bud is now elongated, and that the distal end is broadened and shows signs of division into several digits. How many? Draw the limb bud, considerably enlarged, without the body.Ic. Determine the number of digits in the hind foot of an adult frog.2. Limb Buds of Chick Embryos.2a. Examine a chick embryo after 72 to 80 hours of incubation. Note that the body is in the form of a letter J (see wall chart). The shorter and thicker limb of the J is the head, which bears the eyes, large rounded prominences on each side. The longer and more slender limb of the J is the trunk, the bend of the J being the neck. The limb buds are two semicircular prominences on each side of the trunk. Are they alike? Draw an outline of the body two inches long, and represent the limb buds dark.2b. Examine a chick embryo after 100 to 120 hours of incubation. ... ... Read more

Product Description
This book reviews and presents recent research on acid waters and their effects on aquatic animals. Starting with the environment, in order to assess why the problems have arisen in particular areas, the volume then deals with field and survival studies on invertebrates and vertebrates; examines the extent of the biological problem and the attempts that have been made to relate water quality and the susceptibility of animals. The natural progression of environmental and field studies, toxicity, and survival tests provide the background information for the physiological studies that follow. These form the major component of the book and they seek to analyze the toxic effects of acid waters and trace metals with cardiovascular and endocrinological effects. ... Read more

Product Description
The beginning of life may be a miracle to some, and a mystery to others, but it is certainly one of the most exciting and perhaps controversial fields of scientific investigation in the 21st century.Among the metazoa, life begins when an egg is fertilized by a sperm. The sperm provides a genetic blueprint from the father and perhaps some critical proteins. The egg provides a genetic blueprint from the mother together with a large reservoir of mRNAs and proteins that are required for DNA replication, cell division and the onset of zygotic gene expression. All of the thousands of genes in these two mature gametes are transcriptionally silent and remain so until fertilization.

This work focuses on three biological systems, providing the reader with a clear understanding of the current state of affairs, and the ability to identify common principles as well as critical differences that are responsible for beginning the process of animal development.

The essays presented will be of practical value to all those who are interested in improving fertilization in vitro, in designing novel methods of contraception, in developing preimplantation genetic diagnosis for various diseases, in cloning animals by transplanting nuclei from adult cells to an enucleated egg, and in the application of embryonic stem cells to curing genetic diseases or replacing damaged tissues. But above all, this volume is offered to those who simply have an insatiable curiosity about life and its beginnings.

Product Description
This comprehensive and cogent survey examines the subject of embryonic determination, the set of processes fundamental to animal development by which cells in the early embryo acquire different developmental capabilities. Examining both the classical literature and the newer, molecular findings, the author summarizes the current state of our understanding of determination and poses key questions for the future. He begins with a consideration ofhow much spatial pattern is already laid down when the egg forms inside the mother, and ends just before the formation of visible organs. Within these limits he also considers evidence obtained by a variety of techniques, both experimental and biochemical, derived from the embryos of a variety of animal groups. This is a suitable text for upper level undergraduates, graduate students and researchers in developmental biology. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Hard going but worth it
This is a great companion book to Aristotle's work on animals, a very large and overlooked portion of his writings. Pellegrin shows how many ideas about the classification of animals are erroneouslyattributed toAristotle but most importantly, he raises a lot of questions aboutAristotle's conception of categories. This has far-ranging implications notonly for the study of ancient philosophy but also for the study of logic, the mind, the cognitive sciences in general. Readers interested in GeorgeLakoff's or Steven Pinker's work on cognition will find much food forthought here, as well as much to contest either writer's views. This is ascholarly book in the French academic tradition, not much brio, takes a lotof stamina to get through it. On the other hand, the lack of seductivestylistics leaves you a lot freer to form your own opinion. An importantbook. ... Read more
