The U.S. Army Chemical Stockpile Disposal Program was established to destroy the nation's stockpile of lethal unitary chemical weapons. Since 1990. the Army has been testing a baseline incineration technology at Johnston Island in the southern Pacific Ocean. Under the planned disposal program, this technology will be imported in the mid- to late 1990's to continental United States disposal facilities to be constructed at eight stockpile storage sites. In early 1992, the Committee on Alternative Chemical Demilitarization Technologies was formed by the N RC to investigate potential alternative to the baseline technology. Its book addresses the use of alternative destruction technologies to replace partly or wholly, or to be used in addition to, the baseline technology. The book will consider principal technologies that might be applied to the disposal program, strategies that might be used to manage the stockpile, and combinations of technologies that might be employed. ... Product Description
Using the perspectives of science, technology, and society studies, this book grapples with questions stimulated by a concern that current energy policies and practices reflect neither the best interests of ordinary people nor decision-making consistent with the traditions and aspirations of democracy. Probing the depths of assumptions made in traditional analysis and assembling minority views, present practices come into focus as startlingly narrow social constructs amidst a vast unexplored terrain of material and socio-cultural possibilities. Questions of power and responsible action are pursued in this context, casting both traditional decision makers and citizens in less than a positive light. The author includes an examination of the experience of the "home power" movement not as "The Solution" to our energy problems, but as a concrete illustration of alternative theory and practice, and of the range of possibilities inherent in energy decisions. The book aims not at recommendations for prescriptive public policy, but primarily at refocusing the reader's attentions, as ultimate policy maker, on the core of the energy question: How do we wish to live in the world? ... Product Description

Corporate communication has developed as a domain of management, embracing fields like public relations and marketing communication. Most research on the topic has concentrated on positivist approaches, leading to a limited view. The purpose of this study is to review extant corporate communication theory from discourse and strategy-as-practice perspectives, expanding the picture by more ‘communicational’ aspects. An integrative framework of alternative corporate communication is proposed as a key contribution to corporate communication theory.

Following an ethnographic case study approach, an extensive pool of data was collected over a period of 15 months, representing corporate communication discourse at a major international conglomerate.

The author completed his PhD at the University of Salford, UK, after having worked in several management positions in the financial services industry, heading an international corporate communications team for several years.

After WWII, in a memoir entitled "The Gathering Storm," Churchill described the buildup to war in terms that evoke uncomfortable comparisons. Today, the palpable sense of another storm gathering demands attention as the sources of instability, once underestimated, reach the headlines. But something crucially different underlies this new threat, something not seen before. While we have previously faced the growing popularity of utopian, totalitarian ideologies with global aspirations, we had not until now experienceda looming U.S. energy crisis inextricablyintertwined with the threat. In the worst scenario, taking the brunt of this coming storm could result in a global economic, political, social, and ecological disaster. My book, which is the result of a uniquely broad-based, three-year investigation, is built on the premise that the complex threat we face can be mitigated by addressing the energy crisis.Written for the general public and government leaders, it describes how we got to this critical point in our history, what has kept us from effective action, and how we can stop funding our enemies, stop polluting our planet, regain our energy independence, and put Western Civilization on a more secure foundation. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A really solid primer on energy & power alternatives
A nice survey for people who don't consider themselves scientists and don't want to get bogged down by the chemistry & electrons of power and energy.

Lots of alternatives discussed, with practical implications and comparative costs analyses included.Early chapters cover the history of how we got to where we are, which is actually pretty useful for picturing out how we might move forward.

A nice wrap-up at the end.

Disappointments:the author refuses to even discuss nuclear, which is a disservice to the rest of the book; so you'll have to find another book to help to understand *that* elephant in the room. The author lets her political leanings color things a bit too much in an early chapter and at the end of the book, which fortunately doesn't impact the value of the information in the bulk of the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars She's NO Expert
This woman is a phd in Software design - NOT mechanical engineering.I have seen her speak as well. She is nothing more than another lay person (no expert) with an opinion of global warming. This is just a hobby for her and it shows.NO expertise or depth of knowledge in her work. This is just a rehash of silly environmentalist junk.Save the world by using flourescent bulbs and driving a Prius.Whatever! She gave a speech at National Engineers Week and was all but laughed off the stage.Way Way Way out of her league. Her book is something maybe a junior high student or entry level environmentalist might want to read, but don't buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Green me, please!
I found this book entirely readable and very educational. I am a lay person but I know alot about climate change and our country's part in it. This book complimented my knowledge and also stretched my mind into areas I had not focused on before. From the invention of the external combustion engine (steam engines)to the rise of the internal combustion engine and beyond. Also included is an important discussion on the problems solved to make the internal combustion engine the engineering marvel taken for granted by millions. It is no wonder the general public hasn't a clue how truly toxic it is. Klein also takes us from the AC and DC electricity war of the late 1800s to tomorrow's exciting technologies. And does so with 'green' in mind. Political and cultural issues are discussed as they should be, since they are integral to the problem as well as the solution. The future energies discussed will amaze and hopfully push the world to cleaner, peaceful solutions to today's dirty problems. This book belongs in homes and schools and in our country's leaders' hands. Benefits the engineer or the homemaker. Thanks to S.L. Klein for the time and energy put into such a useful book. I am waiting for part 2 with more hope in my heart for a greener tomorrow. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A really rockin read
If you were ever at all comfortable with integral calculus and differential equations, for example if you took these in college, then J. Epstein's book is a wonderful breezy read through a smorgasbord of social science and biology. The book covers a series of his mathematical lectures on combat, arms races, revolutions, drug epidemics, ecosystems, etc..All the while, he weaves threads of connectivity between the topics.

This is not a book of proofs.Rather, it reminds me of what the book Freakonomics might have been like if it had equations.[By the way, I wish everyone in the world could get to page 82 of this book, to gain an insight into the ideas of herd immunity and decentralized totalitarianism.]Although the book does linear and nonlinear treatments throughout, the final chapter/lecture delves more deeply into understanding the issues of nonlinear models.Unfortunately, I am now left with a thirst I cannot slake, the thirst for the next few chapters after I've finished the book.Joshua, when can I get the next one??

In the last century developments in mathematics, philosophy, physics, computer science, economics and linguistics have proven important for the development of logic. There has been an influx of new ideas, concerns, and logical systems reflecting a great variety of reasoning tasks in the sciences. This volume reflects the multi-dimensional nature of the interplay between logic and science. It presents contributions from the world's leading scholars under the following headings:

    - Proof, Knowledge and Computation

    - Truth Values beyond Bivalence

    - Category-Theoretic Structures

    - Independence, Evaluation Games, and Imperfect Information

    - Dialogue and Pragmatics

The contents exemplify the liveliness of modern perspectives on the philosophy of logic and mathematics and demonstrate the growth of the discipline. It describes new trends, possible developments for research and new issues not normally raised in the standard agenda of the philosophy of logic and mathematics. It transforms rigid classical partitions into a more open field for improvisation.

    Book Description

The transportation sector cannot continue on its current path: The volatility of oil prices threatens the U.S. economy, the large proportion of oil importation threatens U.S. energy security, and the massive contribution of greenhouse gases threatens the environment. The development of domestic sources of alternative transportation fuels with lower greenhouse emissions is now a national imperative.

Coal and biomass are in abundant supply in the United States and can be converted to liquid fuels that can be combusted in existing and future vehicles. Their abundant supply makes them attractive candidates to provide non-oil-based liquid fuels to the U.S. transportation system. However, there are important questions about the economic viability, carbon impact, and technology status of these options.

Liquid Transportation Fuels from Coal and Biomass provides a snapshot of the potential costs of liquid fuels from biomass by biochemical conversion and from biomass and coal by thermochemical conversion. Policy makers, investors, leaders in industry, the transportation sector, and others with a concern for the environment, economy, and energy security will look to this book as a roadmap to independence from foreign oil. With immediate action and sustained effort, alternative liquid fuels can be available in the 2020 time frame, if or when the nation needs them.

"Hess has made a careful study of one of the most intriguing themes that weaves through the recent history of unconventional approaches to cancer. Every researcher, physician, and general reader interested in this field should welcome this important and incisive contribution."
--Michael Lerner, President, Commonweal, and author of Choices in Healing

Is it possible, David Hess asks, that bacteria can contribute to the many other known causes of cancer?

Growing numbers of cancer patients are exploring diet, food supplements, herbs, and nontoxic immunotherapies like bacterial vaccines as a means of therapy. Yet most cancer research organizations refuse to even evaluate these alternatives. Can Bacteria Cause Cancer? argues convincingly that unless this neglected world of alternative therapies is properly scrutinized, the medical Vietnam of the twentieth century may well affect one in two people by the twenty-first century.

David J. Hess investigates one of the great medical mysteries of the twentieth century--the relationship between bacteria and chronic disease. Recently scientists have overturned long-held beliefs by demonstrating that bacterial infections cause many ulcers; they are now reconsidering the role of bacterial infections in other chronic diseases, such as arthritis. Is it possible, Hess asks, that bacteria can contribute to the many other known causes of cancer?

To answer this intriguing question, Hess takes us into the world of alternative cancer researchers. Maintaining that their work has been actively suppressed rather than simply dismissed, he examines their claims--that bacterial vaccines have led to some dramatic cases of long-term cancer remission--and the scientific potential of their theories. Economic interests and cultural values, he demonstrates, have influenced the rush toward radiation and chemotherapy and the current cul-de-sac of toxic treatments.

More than a medical mystery story, Can Bacteria Cause Cancer? is a dramatic case study of the failure of the war on cancer. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading
This is an excellent book by a qualified science writer on a highly controversial subject. Hess does a good job of bridging the gap between modern cancer research and an age old theory which has---until the recent so-called 'breakthroughs' involving H.Pylori and stomach cancer---been all but debunked. The fact is, the 100 year old bacteria theory is gaining new ground and an accumulation of scientific data is strongly supporting it. Tragically, much-maligned researchers like Virginia Livginston had to pay a price at the hands of an economically driven pharmaceutical/medical establishment that has irresponsibly pushed its own brand of cancer treatments----toxic chemotherapies, radiation, etc.----as if they were the sin que non of science, when in fact, they have shown in case after case to neither prolong, nor advance the quality of life for many forms of cancer at a profit. Since Hess's book was written, more powerful data, and a clearer picture is beginning to emerge which clearly establishes a probable bacteria/cancer link for many forms of cancer, not just gastric and the few others established medicine now is admitting exist. 1-0 out of 5 stars Deceptive Title and Worthless Information
Simply put, this book is meant to put first graders to sleep. The projects are simple, impractical, and boring. How do you create a "sneaky" mini-boomerang out of cardboard? Cut a "V" out of the cardboard and there you go! Plainly uninformative. How do you create a robot? 4 ice cube trays, 12 Pringles containers, and an electric clock. That's not science!

I read MAKE magazine and I suppose I was looking for something along those lines when I ordered this book. Based on the title, I ordered the book as a gift for a kid, but never gave it. It was just a disappointment. Just because you put "sneaky" in front of a word, like oragami or jacket, does not make it so.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Sneaky, Sneakier and Sneakiest Uses Trilogy
This review is for all three books in this series. The first note is they are clearly written for the 13 year old and under crowd. For them, it should stimulate the creative scientific gene in them, and open their imaginations to harmless scientific experimentation. So if there is a young burgeonoing, tinkering youngster in your life, these books could be the spark to spur them into some educational fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT IDEAS ON EVERY PAGE!
I bought all three of these books and have read them all. They are very interesting and a great idea for a rainy day. If you buy one you should buy them all. These are some of the most entertaining set of books I have ever read. I highly recommend them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guy Gift
This was given as a Christmas present and it has brought a lot of laughs and some serious tinkering.Fun!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun book
My husband got the first book a while back for himself, but wasn't disappointed when he found it was a better book for our kids, so I got this one just to top out my last order for free shipping. I'm glad I did.
It's as good as the first one, with a lot of simple and non-intimidating projects for the beginning maker, and a lot of them are done with things you can find around the house easily, or ask your friends for.
Like the first book, a lot of the projects have room for improvement, which I think is a great thing, it inspires people to think a little more, to mess around a bit, and see what they can come up with, and feel like they really did something themselves. My 13 yo daughter likes it a lot, and we've planned on trying some of the projects together. ... Read more

    Product Description
The world’s insatiable consumption of energy must be met with new technologies that offer alternative, environmentally conscious sources of light and power. The relatively young field of nonimaging optics is an ideal tool for designing optimized solar energy collectors and illumination optics and holds great promise in the development of solid state lighting applications.

Introduction to Nonimaging Optics provides the first entry-level resource on this rapidly developing field. The book is divided into two sections: the first one deals with nonimaging optics—its main concepts and design methods. The second summarizes general concepts, including rays and wave fronts, reflection and refraction, and symmetry. The author makes a point to relate nonimaging to other popular fields, such as thermodynamics, radiometry, photometry radiation heat transfer and classical mechanics. He also provides useful examples at the end of each chapter.

Introduction to Nonimaging optics invites newcomers to explore a growing field and delivers a comprehensive reference to those already working in optics, illumination engineering or solar energy collection and concentration. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Watching Light Bounce
I was looking for information on how light is reflected by different shapes and surfaces. "Introduction to nonimaging optics" by Julio Chaves provided all that and more as an up-to-date compendium of the most authoritative research in this relatively new/emerging field.

This book provides an exhaustive theoretical exploration of "nonimaging" systems (ie. where there is no object image formed, but there is merely a source of light, an optic to bounce around the light, and a receiver.)

It is difficult to visualize how invisible light bounces around differently configured systems. The book does a remarkably good job depicting many examples of how this happens. The book uses many nicely drawn diagrams and visualizations.

The first section of the book is described as covering main concepts and designs. This is relatively easy reading at a level of high school or entry-level college physics. The second section of the book delves deeper into rays, waves and the appearance of integrals and equations is evident. The second section of the book is a challenging read as it takes the reader well beyond an introduction.

For me, it would be of great practical benefit to see more real world images as well - perhaps photos of systems utilizing these techniques.

I was looking to use mirrors for reflecting and concentrating light in solar energy systems. For my interests, this book provided answers and invaluable assistance in seeing how light bounces around optic systems. ... Read more
