4-0 out of 5 stars Math
Great review of Algebra and does what the schools job is and refuse to do.Great argument for why parents should be allowed to teach in the home and given a tax break.

3-0 out of 5 stars nice condition.
great deal, but wished you guys could mail books to Puerto Rico,we are part of the U.S.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Info, VERY Confusing
As a high school student who enjoys math, my class only used the book for the exercises; the examples are awful and make math a bore. Do not purchase this book if you are a home schooler/ plan to spend most of math class tutoring yourself.

Product Description
The New York Times bestseller-from the author of Math Doesn't Suck-teaches girls how to kick pre-algebra butt

In her New York Times bestselling books, actress and math genius Danica McKellar shatters the "math nerd" stereotype and gives girls the tools to ace middle-school math in her unique, just-us-girls style. Now, in her second book, Kiss My Math, McKellar empowers a new crop of girls-seventh to ninth graders-to tackle the next level of mathematics: pre-algebra.

Stepping up not only the math but the sass and style, McKellar helps math-phobic teenagers chill out and finally "get" negative numbers, variables, absolute values, exponents, and more. As she did so effectively in Math Doesn't Suck, McKellar uses personality quizzes, reader polls, real-life testimonials, and stories from her own life-in addition to clear instruction, helpful tips, and practice problems-revealing why pre-algebra is easier, more relevant, and more glamorous than girls think. McKellar is clearly reaching her audience: parents, teachers, and especially girls are asking for more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a lot of fun help
My daughter's are reading this book as they pass through the units. It is funner than their math books and they often choose to read it during their reading time. It has helped them understand concepts they struggled with.I highly recommend it

5-0 out of 5 stars Use for Instruction incarcerated women
I use Math Doesn't Suck and Kiss My Math to teach math to women who are incarcerated at the Federal Prison Camp (FPC) north of Phoenix. My students range in age from 18 years to the mid-sixties. All of the women in my classes have already acquired either a high school diploma or a GED degree. Unfortunately, many of them have forgotten much of the math that they once knew; so they need a "math refresher course."

Many FPC inmates want to improve their math skills, because, while they are incarcerated at FPC, they have the opportunity to participate in The College Program, which was initiated about 13 years ago by Professor Peg Bortner of Arizona State University. The College Program offers college level courses in cooperation with Rio Salado College [a Maricopa County, Arizona, community college] in a "distance learning" format. The students acquire college credits from Rio, which they may transfer to almost any other community college or to a university after their release from FPC. A woman whose sentence keeps her at FPC long enough may even earn one or more associate degrees.

Rio requires every incoming student to sit for a series of proficiency examinations, one of which is a math exam. The other exams are not serious obstacles for most of our students, but the math exam is another story. Many of our students do not achieve on their first attempt a score that is sufficiently high to permit them to register for a college level math course. The intent of our "math refresher course," which uses Math Doesn't Suck and Kiss My Math as the textbooks for the course, is to get them over that hurdle.

There is no charge for the course. We provide our students with all of the supplies they need at no charge and lend them the books that Changing Hands Bookstore, an independent local bookstore in Tempe, kindly sells to us at a reduced price.

Our students greatly appreciate both Math Doesn't Suck and Kiss My Math, which are much more than just math books: they are also great confidence builders. For many of our students, these are perhaps the only math books they have ever truly liked. Consequently, we let each student who completes the course choose one of the books to keep as her own. We wish that we could let them keep both, but our limited resources do not permit us to do so.

Sincerely yours,

Karnavalo

5-0 out of 5 stars Danica = great role model, better math teacher
Like her first book ("Math Doesn't Suck"), "Kiss My Math" is an epic win. I was eleven when I first read Danica's books, and they changed my whole perspective on math. I'm now thirteen and I love my algebra class.

"Kiss My Math" doesn't just help girls understand math, it helps them embrace it. There are real-life testimonies, quizzes, statistics, and other engaging materials in addition to the crystal-clear lessons. You will be walked through the steps of each problem, but not babied and never put down.

Danica emphasizes the importance of not dumbing yourself down and always being the best that you can. Even if you weren't born to be a math whiz, any of Danica's books are guaranteed to imnprove your outlook and your grades, and give you something else even more valuable: self-confidence.

Un libro que nos ensena la Matematicas de una manera no tan complicada. Muy buen libro!

4-0 out of 5 stars CD Is Un-usable
The book is very different looking inside than the classic Algebra Baldor I used in high school in Panama. This is not a big deal however. The big deal at least for me and the main reason I got this book was for the FREE CD.

However the CD is totally useless because you need a password sent to you from the publisher and the publisher never writes you back with a password. So I am very disappointed.(Review written by Antonio).

5-0 out of 5 stars I protest! where is the Arabian guy!
This is the most feared book in Latinamerican high school!
Once you went through it, you WILL know everything in Algebra.
It is a total disrespect to pull Al Juarismi (the arabian guy) from the cover and insert this smiling fatty guy who no one knows.

There is quite a history and tradition with this book that NO student will ever forget :)

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Text
This is the worst math text I have ever used. It reads as if it were written by someone who speaks English as a second language. The examples skip steps. The lessons skip steps, and if your teacher is like mine, who just reads from the book, none of these spaces in logic are filled in. Also, there are many terms used in this book that you will never see anywhere else, including other texts for college algebra. Absolutely horrible book, completely useless!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great condition!
This book was in great condition. I paid a fair price for it and I am very happy with it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
It took longer to receive the book than what was stated on the link when making my selection, as well as, it stated the purchase qualified for free shipping, but at order point I was charged shipping.Amazon posts nuggets of information when you are searching for the right item, you are thinking you are getting one thing to find out different when checking out your order. At that point you have already invested too much time to back out and go another route. I was not happy for what it ended up costing me and how long it took to get it. Very DISAPPOINTED.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a good math book for home schooling or class setting
This book was written in it's own language and not for the average person. If you want to understand this book. 5-0 out of 5 stars the title says it all
the title says it all. it gets you ready for Algebra. if you need it, get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars As far as I can see
I bought Ready for Algebra because we're homeschooling and I have trouble with math. I'm an older-than-usual mom and it's been 40 years since I had algebra, so I need help. Frankly, I got this book for myself. The cartoons, the simple explanations, and the blessings of an index and glossary are helping pave the way for me as I work alongside my daughter in math. Now I'll understand what she's asking and not have to call our mentor math mom all the time. :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great help for Pre-Algebra!
Good reference.Easy format for younger students to understand.Especially the question and answer design of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars we love Dr. Math
Since my son started using BeeStar online math, he often asks questions about math problems. They are more and more challenging to me. This book came in as a big help. Its friendly question and answer format makes it very easy to use. The answers are insightful and presented in an elegant and simple manner that makes otherwise hard-to-explain concepts easy. It not only teaches the conventional math, but also gives you the context and the thoughts behind the principles. My son's math sense is improved significantly since I used this invaluable book. We love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Suffering from pre-algebra anxiety? I prescribe Dr.Math
Dr. Math Gets You Ready for Algebra contains answers to some pithy questions.

What is algebra? The answer starts out: Algebra is like arithmetic, but in algebra some of the numbers have names instead of values.

As another example, It makes no sense to me why someone would replace a number with a letter signed Carissa. The answer is in part Youre doing something a little like algebra whenever you use a pronoun. You could have written this: It makes no sense to Carissa why someone would replace a number with a letter

Or how about: An algebraic expression is like a word or phrase, and an equation is like a sentence.

A successful textbook is easy to TEACH from because it has lots of exercises, and plenty of extra padding in case there isnt quite enough useful content to fill the entire semester.Reading a successful textbook is often like eating sawdust. In contrast, Dr. Math Gets You Ready for Algebra is easy to LEARN from. It is not necessary to read it cover to cover. Instead, I heartily recommend that you keep this book in your medicine cabinet, secure in the knowledge that if your pre-teen comes home with a questions about pre-algebra, you wont be left with a splitting headache. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars It is generally not needed - please read the warning
WARNING - Saxon's Algebra is a great course but this is not 'it' - please read below.

All you get is the Test forms in a booklet that is ALWAYS included in the Home Study Kit.

The HOME STUDY KIT is made up of:

1 - The Algebra 1 student's textbook that includes the 120 lessons, the extra topics, index, glossary and an answer key to the odd-numbered problems.
2 - Test forms that include the 31 tests plus reproducible test answer sheets.
3 - Answers and tests solutions booklet that is just that. It only includes the answers not the ways to get there.

You only get #2 if you order this item, meaning that you will NOT be able to teach your students Algebra. Moreover, there is no value in purchasing this booklet as it is always included with the Home Study Kit so, to the extent that you get a textbook, you the tests booklet should be included. Also, keep in mind that the 32 pages can be easily copied and, in fact, the last 2 pages are test forms that are meant to be reproduced.

I love Saxon and I've been using Saxon courses for many years with my children but you should look for the Home Study Kit or any other offer that includes the 3 items I listed above.

I am including my review of the Home Study Kit as a way to help those interested with purchases what is actually needed to successfully teach Algebra 1.

_____________________________________________

BRIEF EVALUATION OF THE COMPLETE STUDY KIT

Like previous courses in the Saxon's series, Algebra 1 is a most effective tool for teaching children math without intimidating them and without boring them. After more than 6 years of teaching my own kids math after school I can testify that it works. Both my kids are now in advanced math classes, their math grades always A's and, as I explain below, we just skipped Algebra 1/2 as not necessary.

ALGEBRA 1/2 vs. ALGEBRA 1

I found Algebra 1 to be the logical 'next' for my kids who successfully covered Saxon's Math 8/7 the year before. We decided to skip Algebra 1/2 because it was more or less a re-review of the material in 8/7, presumably to ensure a solid math foundation prior to moving into the more abstract 'true' algebra covered by this text.

I would suggest taking Algebra 1 ans skipping Algebra 1/2 if your students have mastered Math 8/7. Otherwise, go with Algebra 1.

THE SAXON METHOD

We've been using Saxon's books to teach our kids math starting with Math 3/2 and we've been very happy.

Algebra 1 is comprised of 120 lessons, 31 tests, one extra topic on real number, Glossary, Index and answers to the odd-numbered questions. Unlike the previous Math courses, there are no 'Investigations' and the lessons no longer begin with drills and warmup activities. Also, unlike prior math cycles up to Math 8/7, tests are administered after every four lesson rather than after every five.

Each lesson begins by explaining and illustrating a number of new topics - rarely one, usually two or three, sometimes more. That is followed by a small number of practice exercises that are related to the new topics. Finally, there is a 30-item problem set (what the prior volumes were calling 'mixed practice') that asks students to answer/solve 30 questions that could be on EVERYTHING covered by Saxon up to that point. Each individual question has references to the lesson(s) which the students may want to review if they are having trouble with the answer/solution.

After every 4 lessons there is a 20-question test.

The problem set and the multi-topic lessons are what makes the Saxon method so effective as new concepts are introduced incrementally and each problem set keeps revisiting prior topics and many of the problems require the student to combine skills and knowledge acquired in more than one lesson.

THE KIT's CONTENTS

A complete, usable kit should include the following:

- The Algebra 1 student's textbook that includes the 120 lessons, the extra topics, index, glossary and an answer key to the odd-numbered problems.
- Test forms that include the 31 tests plus reproducible test answer sheets.
- Answers and tests solutions booklet that is just that. It only includes the answers not the ways to get there.

If you are not comfortable with the topic, you MAY want to order the optional 'Solutions manual' and, perhaps the Teacher's manual. I have no experience with these items.

PRACTICAL ADVICE

You should be very careful on what you get in your order. The 3 items above are what is usually called 'The Home Study Kit'. This is sufficient for teaching math. Please be aware that you will not be able to teach math effectively unless you have all 3 times above. Before you actually place your order, you should contact the seller and make sure that this is what you get.

I found the DIVE into Math CD for Saxon Algebra 1, 3rd edition to be a very useful addition. In fact this is what I am using this year and both the kids and myself are happier for it. You may be able to find kits that sell the CD separately or as part of a bundle. You will not be able to teach with the CD alone because you will be missing the practice problems and the tests so consider buying the CD by itself if you already have the 'study kit' or look for some bundle that has both the study kit and the CD. One CD for your 'class' should be sufficient so, if you have more than one student, buy as many kits as you need for the students and only one CD for teaching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saxon Tests
Saxon's math tests are both fair and an accurate picture of what the student should know.Nothing is given in a test that has not been thoroughly reviewed in the textbook first, so students have an opportunity to score well if they have been doing and understanding their homework. We have also found that using Saxon math, as intended, increases scores on standardized testing, because students retain more. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent but only a beginning algebra book
I love this book.I used it for once a week lessons for my gifted son, about age 11 or 12.He only finished about half of it,

but afterwards he won the state math counts competition with a perfect paper, as i recall.

This book, like all harold jacobs' books, treats the subject with respect, including the deep ideas,

and still makes it fun.One thing I had not noticed before however is that it is only a very elementary beginners' book.

them main ideas of algebra are not even mentioned, dividing polynomials, finding greatest common divisors,

properties of prime and relatively prime numbers, the factor theorem for polynomials, and the rational root theorem.

maybe those are called "precalculus" today.anyway it is excellent, but a kid needs more.

does jacobs' have another less elementary book on second year algebra?i have not seen one,

but i would welcome it.maybe more of my university calculus students would know basic background if he did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
This is the best algebra book I have ever seen in my life, and I worked in a library for three years with access to countless algebra text books. This book doesn't assume that you already know much of the fundamentals of math or its vocabulary. It builds you from the ground up and reinforces what it teaches in its exercises. Love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic Math & PreAlgebra
This book was very beneficial. I started back to school to work towards an associates degree which requires college level math. I was terrible at math in school and needed a quick refresher for the college placement test. This helped me tremendously. It is easy to follow and very informative.

I bought the Basic Math and Pre-algebra cliff notes for my 14 year old dyslexic daughter.Anyone with a dyslexic child knows that if they don't use a skill often, they lose the ability to retain the formula.I thought the book would be a great skill review tool for her since it covers so much in one book.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for a condensed introductory couse
If you want to teach a second grader some basic math in half a year, this is a right book. We don't need three to five years to teach basic math. So skip the lengthy (and maybe even distracting) textbooks. Use this concise book as a guideline. This is achievable for bright kids. Maybe this is an unconventioal use of the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's all been said: Great book!
It's all already been said: this is a great book if you're looking to thoroughly learn the material yourself, rather than be given proofs. It forces you to prove fundamental ideas for the development of the theory, providing definitions and guidance. It's absolutely full of relevant exercises.
I really liked the style of the book. It felt more like a mathematical discussion rather than a lesson. This was partly due to the many exercises immediately following each definition or theorems, rather than being chunked all at the end of the chapter. I didn't feel like I was being talked down to, which I think is deserved for getting through the exercises myself.
However, it was exactly for these reasons that my boyfriend didn't like the book, so be aware that it just might not be your cup of tea. It's worth trying out, though, considering the low price.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good book
This book itemizes the related theorems and covers most major results. It would be better if some definitions have some more detailed examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Supplement
I recommend this book for all who are taking undergraduate Abstract Algebra. The book gives clear explanation of most of the concepts taught in class. Another great thing about this book is that it includes definitions and explanations of terms that are usually not discussed in class. This is a must have for math majors!

4-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT READ THIS PLEASE!IT COULD SAVE LIVES!
I think I bought this book only because it had that neat Moor Methodesque presentation. And because I like to buy math books. And because it was cheap.

So far so good, though I can't say that it differs particularly from any standard text on algebra. It's not big enough to be Lang. Not terse enough to by Hungerford. And not comprehensive enough to be Dummit and Foote.
It also costs about a fifth of the price of any of those and has a neat do-it-yourself kind of methodology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book on Algebra
I wanted to study Galois Theory to understand why the quintic is not solvable in radicals.I did some search on the net and ran into this book. My math background is in probability and analysis. With my background and interest this book I feel this book is perfect. It is not too difficult, plenty of exercises and I can follow the development; also I do not feel I am being talked down to by the author.I will have a good understanding of Galois and related theories after putting in the time and effort with this book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars dishonest seller!
Hello,

I'd like to report that this seller is dishonest and disresponsible. I ordered a textbook from her on Sep. 20, and haven't received the book until Oct. 3. I connected her one week later, but he/she didn't respond. It has caused me do not have a textbook for my math class now; so, do not buy anything from this seller!

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Algebra Fun...Within Reason
"As long as there is algebra, there will be prayer in schools." This being said, Blitzer's texts are great. Appreciated by students and instructors alike for their comprehensive and clear explanations of algebraic principles. Contemporary real life examples lend interest to sections. Study tip boxes, explanatory voice balloons, checkpoint examples, exercise sets and end of chapter review guides make success at algebra almost painless for anyone who is willing to do the work. My only suggestion...make chapter summaries downloadable or available on the enclosed cd.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Introduction
This book is a good introduction to linear algebra. The concepts and theorems are really well explained. I would say this would be a really good book to teach yourself, especially if you get the solutions manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to save cash
Chances are you are a university student in need of a linear algebra textbook. Great news! This older version is exactly the same as the newer version in every which way. If the new edition is a required text for your class this older edition will save you some cash. I bought this edition from amazon.com for 13 dollars. The university bookstore was charging 178 dollars for basically the same book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory text but may not be enough for the math savvy ...
Happens to read through a few chapters of this book recently.I think it's probably a decent text for someone that has never had Linear Algebra before, but I would recommend Axler's 'Linear algebra Done Right' or Halmos' 'Finite-Dimensional Vector Spaces' for more math savvy students.

3-0 out of 5 stars slow shipping but good product
Product was exactly what I expected. The only thing I did not like was that the shipping took too long.

4-0 out of 5 stars good first introduction
This book is good for a basic introduction, that is for people who have never really seen much linear algebra and who haven't taken a proof-based course before. I used it in my first linear algebra course as an undergrad, and also when I taught an introductory course over the summer.

I especially like that it has some options, such as details of R^n being presented at the end of chapter two as an alternative to covering those facts in the more general context of "vector spaces" in chapter 4. It is not especially rigorous as far as proving things, and does not get too in depth as far as computations though there are some good sections on dynamical systems. So if you are teaching a class that is half engineers and half math majors, it strikes a decent balance.

For anyone who uses linear algebra, you will not be able to get away with having this as your only book, try Strang or Axler for more computational or theoretical (respectively) treatments. It is definitely a good intro though, it gives a decent overview of the main ideas. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of about 3 "best texts" on this in 2000
Good for 2nd course. First would be perhaps Saunders MacLane , Algebra, or Herstein, Topics in Algebra.

What is so great about these newer books is more examples worked out and more exercises. I love to work the exercises -- I learn as much from that as from the lectures and regular homework.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
Abstract algebra is an inherently abstract, formal, non-intuitive subject, and while it can be made less difficult, it cannot be made easy. Gallian's book is a valiant attempt at the latter. The book shies away from precise definitions, formal proofs, and that elusive thing known as "mathematical maturity." However, abstract algebra simply cannot be satisfactorily taught without at least a minimum of these things, and is best taught in as formal of an environment as possible. As such, I cannot recommend Gallian's book to those who wish to learn abstract algebra on a late undergraduate/beginning graduate level. However, for the advanced high school student who wishes to study abstract algebra early, Gallian's book is excellent in that it does not presume that the student has had much prior exposure to advanced mathematics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for an Easy Start!
This is a great textbook for an introduction to group theory, however, it's not the textbook you want if you want a strong foundation. That's what Dummit and Foote is for.

For the price (used), it was very reasonable, and a nice addition to my collection of math texts.

1-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst Abstract Algebra Books ever
This book actually develops very little math in its chapters , while throwing some very difficult problems at the reader. It is really surprising that in order to read an essential theorem like Cayley's Theorem (page 126) one is referred back to Exercise 23 , and to Exercise 9.Can't Dr Gallian have at least one self-contained Proof?? I can see that maybe he wants to make the student think , but the book has plenty of exercises for that purpose!Example 14 on page 208 is also very revealing. Here Dr Gallian talks about a very important isomorphism, but he just mentions a lot of facts without proof in the body of his proof!!!Really amazing! What can a student seeing this stuff for the first time learn from this example?? Beyond the bad presentation here are some major defects :
1.Compared to other popular Algebra textbooks used these days in the U.S , the Exercises are very difficult.I made comparisons to 3 other popular textbooks. The Exercises are harder than "A First Course In Abstract Algebra" by Fraleigh. It is harder than "Elements of Modern Algebra" by Gilbert and Gilbert , and finally it is harder than "Abstract Algebra" by Blair and Beachy.
2.It is well known to Undergraduate Educators like myself , that most students who are in undergrad math programs have no intention of going to Graduate School in Mathematics. For most of these folks it was a Shock to learn that the Undergraduate Abstract Algebra Course has a lot to do with proofs , and little with Computations. This book just adds to this Shock. It is certainly not in tune with current academic reality facing Abstract Algebra Instructors, due to the fact that it expects too much from the student.
3.In recent editions the book has become more and more applications oriented. This is completely unneccessary , and I really do not know what Dr Gallian is trying to accomplish here.
4.It seems to me that Dr Gallian has had the same approach one would have when writing a Calculus textbook: But this approach does not work in a hard subject like Abstract Algebra .This Book does not provide any insights into the actual thought processes that are required in constructing airtight Abstract Algebra Proofs. Throughout the book, one is constantly left with the question "So what are the important problems and techniques?"Dr Gallian's approach would have been perfectly OK if he was writing a Calculus book , because in Calculus just looking at a few model problems is enough to master the subject to a reasonable degree. However in higher level math courses due to the huge number of different methods and its variations , it is more important to develop insights into the subject.
This will not happen when studying this textbook.I consider this to be the BIGGEST FLAW of the book.
Conclusion: This is a very bad Abstract Algebra Book.AVOID this book if you are trying to learn something about the subject.

1-0 out of 5 stars No good.
Like most textbooks on abstract algebra (group theory), this book has no reason for existence. You can't learn from it; the student solutions manual provides only limited "help", the chapters are too discursive, haphazard and in general so abstract as to defy comprehsnion by the ostensible reader (student). In short, the book provides no understanding of the subject, for the author does not know how to start from the beginning and build.

If his book is any indication of the way he teaches, I would hate to be one of Mr. Gallian's students, for despite my best efforts, I would probably end up leaning nothing and find myself unable to put it all together..

It's obvious that Mr. Gallian does not care about his reader. Two circumstances support this:

Mr. Gallian's proof of Cayley's theorem is obviously intended for someone already familiar with it for among other things,it is presented without motivation and without concreteness. This shortcoming is not unique to Mr. Gallian, for I tried at least four other sources before finding one which starts at the beginning.

The discussion of the computation of Aut(Z10) is incomprehensible, again due to Mr. Gallian's disdain for providing even the simplest motivation--in short, he does not nkow how to start at the beginning.Mr. Gallian apparently expects us to intuit that because an isomorphism takes an element from order K to another element of order K, (U(10) is isomorphic to AutZ(10).I know that I don't express this well--but that's for Mr. Gallian to do.Incidentically, Mr. Gallian's treatment of the isomorphism of (Zn) to (U(n)is just as baffling.I, for one, don't expect genuis from a textbook, only clarity.

I should not have to remind Mr. Gallian that abstraction is engendered from the concrete. He has been teaching long enough to know this.

Books like his are one of the reasons why people are turned off to math in general.

P.S.I am still looking for a good (read clear, logical, organized) textbook on abstract algebra (group theory).

5-0 out of 5 stars Love using Saxon Math Books
Saxon Math is really easy to use, including Saxon Algebra 1/2.You really don't need to buy the Teachers Edition, it's all explained well in the Student Edition and there really isn't anything new in the Teachers addition to provide extra help. What you need to buy is the Student book, along with Solutions Manual and Test forms and Homeschool packet. You need all four things. Also, make sure if, buying used that they are all the same year and same edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every problem in every set
I have used Saxon with my own students, and I tutor Pre-algebra using this text as well.I have a few thoughts to share, mostly in response to a few of the reviews on this site.Yes, Algebra 1/2 is a small step between 8/7 and Algebra I - however I have found it to be a very, very necessary step for most students.Algebra I does require a certain level of mental development - abstract thinking - that many 12, 13 and even 14 year olds may just not be ready to handle. Of course many are ready, and that is fine, but if you have any doubts take the extra year to work on automaticity of the process. Secondly, never judge a Saxon text from the first dozen, two dozen, or even three dozen lessons.Saxon's strong point is the spiral method, whereby every year they solidfy and expand upon previously taught concepts. Therefore, some of the lessons make appear just to be review, but built into the problem sets are small incremental advances in technique and concept. Finally, please please...have your student work every problem in every set if at all possible. The problems do increase in difficulty as they go along, introducing new angles on old topics. In addition, the idea is for the students to become totally proficient, able to solve the problems almost without having to think about what to do.This type of comfort is only gained through practice, no matter how bright the student. My son's brillant calculus professor at a well-known University just told the students this semester that the key to understanding Calculus is to do a thousand problems a week.He wasn't kidding.Math is a language of sorts - the language of science - and must be practiced and worked with daily to increase fluency.

5-0 out of 5 stars As described
Usable book, inexpensive, fair priced shipping, arrived quickly. Thank you. The Saxon Math system is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent course but please read the 'warning' before you order
WARNING

Please be VERY careful of what you are getting. If the price you see appears too good to be true it could be because you are not getting the complete Saxon kit.

You should know that the current edition is THIRD and that the complete kit should include the following:

1 - The Algebra 1/2 textbook that includes the 123 lessons, the extra topics, index, glossary and an answer key to the odd-numbered problems.
2 - Test forms that include the 31 tests plus reproducible test answer sheets.
3 - Answers and tests solutions booklet that is just that. It only includes the answers not the ways to get there - for that an optional 'Solutions manual' can be obtained separately.

You CANNOT teach Algebra 1/2 unless you have all three items above so it helps to contact the vendor and ask for some confirmation that they will be shipping you all three components.

BRIEF EVALUATION

I found Algebra 1/2 to cover with only small additions and enhancements the topics that Saxon's Math 8/7 covered already. While it should be very good for students who feel the need to consolidate the material studied during the previous year, my own children felt that there was little new here and they asked me to skip the Algebra Half and go to the full Algebra One, which is what we are about to do.

We had a very good experience with this set but, thanks to my kids being such godd students, we've decided to skip it.

Even though we had to abandon this course after the first half-dozen lessons convinced us that we didn't need it, I will grant the package 5 stars for Saxon's proven effectiveness but be aware that this should be skipped by the more advanced students.

THE SAXON METHOD

We've been using Saxon's books to teach our kids math starting with Math 3/2 and we've been very happy.

Algebra 1/2 (it means ALGEBRA HALF not "Algebra One and Two" is comprised of 123 lessons, 31 tests and a number of Topics labeled from A to J. Unlike the previous Math courses, there are no 'Investigations' and the lessons no longer begin with drills and warmup activities. Also, unlike prior math cycles up to Math 8/7, tests are administered after every four lesson rather than after every five.

Each lesson begins by explaining and illustrating a number of new topics - one, two or sometimes three.

The problem set and the multi-topic lessons are what makes the Saxon method so effective as new concepts are introduced incrementally and each problem set keeps revisiting prior topics and many of the problems require the student to combine skills and knowledge aquired in more than one lesson.

5-0 out of 5 stars successfully understanding the foundations of algebra
Having faced the challenges of learning algebra in college, I found this book online and bought it -and the workbook- as a supplement to my course assigned textbook. I was really impressed at how easy I could comprehend the intended subject matter as I had struggled with it on previous occasions. I really liked the format of the book and how the examples were lain out. I recommend it to anyone learning this subject :)

5-0 out of 5 stars I love the entire A-Plus series
I always use the A-Plus series (Beginning Algebra: Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1; Algebra: Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus; SAT Math) in tutoring. They contain very helpful examples and thousands of exercises with answers.

They are perfect for reviewing middle-school and high-school math and SAT I/II math.

They can also be used by students preparing for the AMC and other math competitions.

US schools always take back students' textbooks when the school year is over. Why not get the A-Plus series as backup math textbooks?
