Paid extra for expedited shipping, which didn't happen.I ended up having to drop the class because the book didn't arrive in time to take with me on my trip, so I couldn't do the mandatory first assignment, which was due before I could get back home to use the book.

Product Description

These authors have created a book to really help students visualize mathematics for better comprehension. By creating algebraic visual side-by-sides to solve various problems in the examples, the authors show students the relationship of the algebraic solution with the visual, often graphical, solution. In addition, the authors have added a variety of new tools to help students better use the book for maximum effectiveness to not only pass the course, but truly understand the material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product
Came fast and was in a better used condition than I expected. So far, it seems like a good idea to order under the Amazon name products, even if product (or book) may be used.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book.
It's the most explicit math book I ever read. The explanations and the examples provided are so clear that you will have no problem making the exercises and the exams. I want to congratulate the authors for such a great job.

5-0 out of 5 stars great textbook seller
Great book seller! I bought the book and within 4 days I had received it, which is greast because I bought it after the semester had started. The book was in great condition.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the right book
I needed a book for my college algebra course. This was the one in the syllubus. What I did not expect was to get the instructor's edition. Now, I am trying to get rid of it and all of the local college bookstores will not take it back. But they are taking back the student's version for about 60 dollars. Thanks alot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great in Many Ways
As a math tutor, I am familiar with many books.I really like this book because it explains everything I would want the student to know.It illustrates all the common pitfalls very clearly.

***** 5 stars for presentation (layout, typesetting, use of color, organization).

***** 5 stars for content (the authors seem to be very in touch with what explanations work for students both in the short term, and what explanations are best for them in the long term.)

***** 5 stars for the exercises. There are a lot of exercises in each section (usually around 100?).They cover the basics all the way up to what they call the 'sythesis' problems, where the student can challenge themselves to do advanced problems.I really like the synthesis problems because they are do-able and can make the student start to feel confident.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recomend
I bought this book to help me before I started algebra class. I did each chapter at my own pace, and did all of the exercises. This really helped me. I aced my class! I found that this book has the perfect combination of visual with written instructions and explanations. I plan to purchase more books from the Demystifying series as I progress through my maths classes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great place to start a math journey or re-education.
Great math book.I dropped out of high school, and barely got by in math classes back then, and sometimes not at all... (C-'s, D's and F's).Im 40 now, and Ive been doing well with this course.Ive spent about 2 hours every Sat. and Sunday in a Barnes and Noble coffee shop for about 4 months to do it (Im on the final chapter now and only have 5 pages left). Finally I'm really beginning to understand math, andI Get it!Sometimes i had to stare at a problem for 10 to 15 minutes and think in through. But it finally paid off.

Anyways, I feel like Im ready for intermediate algebra at the College level now for real.My only criticism is that i wish the graphing section had more in depth training on graphs and example problems/solutions,I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn math and build a solid foundation.

I wish the author would put up a website for any reported errors and solutions also (there were only a few).

5-0 out of 5 stars A Teacher Who Wants You To Succeed
Thank you, Mr. Bluman. You have cracked into my brain, and now I can do math, without a calculator, without feeling like my head will explode! Mr. Bluman is a gifted, no-nonsense teacher who can teach anyone math with this straightforward, brilliantly crafted self-teaching manual. He even tackles math phobia -it is real- and dispatches it effectively with tips to get yourself going every day. This book should be in every junior high and high school library. He gives you the tools and then with practice, you can solve the problems. The format ofexplanations step-by-step, repetition, practice, and practice tests and final tests in every chapter is an excellent approach to truly "getting it". Thanks a million!

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked really well for me
I bought this book (and a bunch of others) because I wanted to prepare myself for a college math assessment test and score high enough that I could jump straight into statistics (I know, pretty ambitious!).

My current situation?

1) I haven't studied algebra (or any math at all for that matter!) in about 20 years

2) I didn't learn math in English

So, after opening the first algebra book and realizing I didn't remember how to do even more basic operations, like dividing large numbers by large numbers, I decided I needed to get something that went even further back.

I bought about 10 books, thinking that it was a good investment, as skipping the basic math classes at about $300, plus the cost of books, for each, would save me quite a bit of money.

After reading about 40 pages of the first basic math book, I was very disappointed. It was unclear, complicated and just didn't make much sense to me. I started to wonder if things had changed THAT much since I used to study. I put the book aside and pulled this one from the pile. Well, it has 12 chapters and I have completed 8 so far. The book is great! I read some bad reviews and, who knows, maybe chapters 9, 10, 11, and 12 are rubbish... But I doubt it!

The approach is logical, practical and easy to follow. There are quite a few exercises and tests at the end of each chapter, as well as a complete test at the end of the book. I usually complete a couple of chapters, then take all the chapter-end tests from the previous chapters again before proceeding. This way, the information stays fresh in my mind.

I liked this book so much that I bought about 4 or 5 more books from the DeMystified collection, including Algebra and Math Word Problems (the latter by the same author). Ok, so maybe I buy books compulsively at times, but I am very excited about math, probably for the first time in my life.

If you need to take a refresher course, or if you need support for classes you are taking, I truly recommend this book!

Good luck!

2-0 out of 5 stars This book has a few errors
HAHA! Ok, I'll explain why I am laughing. I have been working on this book and everything has been good until chapter 11 page 211. I remembered when I first bought this book, I read this comment and thought "ok the guy (S.Brown) just doesn't know how to answer the problem" I came on here looking for this comment to see if it was the same comment I had. That is why I am laughing. The author really does just give up after chapter 10! Although there are a few errors in this book, it's a pretty ok book. Considering I didn't even know my multiplication table before I started this book and now I can pass math tests easily. Yah! Except the graphing. Luckily I have three other math books that can help with this. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great textbook... if you already know everything in it
This book is great if you already know the material.I was taking a first class in Abstract Algebra with this as a textbook, though, and it was completely unenlightening. It seems most suited to being a reference, or a text for a more advanced graduate course.
The style of the book is highly no-nonsense.It basically runs as Definition - Proposition - Proof, and the proofs are not exactly enlightening, leaving many intermediate steps to the reader.I'm sure that would be helpful if I already knew the material, but because I don't, I didn't find the book helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Goodbook for a class
It's a good book with a lot of exercises.
Very good for a graduate class.
Being read with Hungerford is a good combination to prepare for the qual.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Abstract Algebra Textbook!
This textbook is amazing. If you're looking for something more applied, this isn't it. But if you're ready to really dig into abstract algebra, this book will give you a strong base.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Wordiness is overwhelming
Dummit and Foote's Abstract Algebra book, in terms of content, is one of the best. It should be easily read by any decent student at the advanced undergraduate or early graduate level. They give a lovely arsenal of important examples. The exercises are nice as well. I must give this book 3 stars, because of the annoying superfluous style in which they write. The exposition is consistently redundant and bloated; for example, they'll write,
"Let f(x)/in F[x] be an irreducible polynomial having coefficients in F,"
when they should write,
"Let f(x)/in F[x] be irreducible."
The entire exposition is like this. If they could have written this in a "no-nonsense" fashion, the volume of the book could probably have been cut by at least 40%, and it would be a much more elegant read. The knowledge and understanding potentially gained from this book are like diamonds... buried in a gigantic pile of elephant dung. Speaking for myself, I enjoy math books which are more concise; a good math book should allow a reader to absorb deep concepts and ideas without having to sift through a garbage-mass of words. For example, look at Rudin's Principles of Mathematical Analysis; it is considered to be one of the most elegantly written math books of all time; moreover, the style of baby Rudin is a stark contrast to that of Dummit and Foote.
I recommend the book, by I. Martin Isaacs, "Algebra: A Graduate Course."

4-0 out of 5 stars A Really Good Textbook but No Solutions!
This is a really good book that explained abstract algebra in a very clear, concise manner. If only it had solutions or hints to its exercises, which it doesn't have any at all, this book would be perfect for an undergraduate introduction to the subject.

The key to learning and understanding abstract algebra is to see lots and lots of worked out examples. ... Read more

Product Description
Renowned professor and author Gilbert Strang demonstrates that linear algebra is a fascinating subject by showing both its beauty and value. While the mathematics is there, the effort is not all concentrated on proofs. Strang's emphasis is on understanding. He explains concepts, rather than deduces. This book is written in an informal and personal style and teaches real mathematics. The gears change in Chapter 2 as students reach the introduction of vector spaces. Throughout the book, the theory is motivated and reinforced by genuine applications, allowing pure mathematicians to teach applied mathematics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are a beginner, this is the book you must read!!!
I highly recommend this book to beginners. Is it possible there is no lemma, theorem or proof in an EXCELLENT math book? Yes! This book presents a very clear picture of linear algebra in a friendly way instead of simply listing some theorems. The words, notations and figures are very appropriate. The author is humorous. Sometimes, I even found I read the book with smile. Unbelievable! If you were scared by math once, you may try this book to retrieve your confidence and enthusiasm on math. It is really quite enjoying reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for a first course in applied linear algebra
As someone who works in an R&D environment (and is called upon to use linear algebra to solve real world
engineering problems), I wanted to put this book in perspective for those who may be unsure of the true value of this book given the variance in the reviews.

1. This book presents an applied treatment of the subject appropriate for a first course. The goal of the
book is to provide the reader with an intuitive understanding of the material. Geometrical arguments and diagrams
are used throughout without apology. Coordinates and matrices are emphasized. Formal proofs are not emphasized.

2. This book is geared toward those doing computations in the real world.Linear algebra
is the workhorse of modern applied mathematics. Any modern course on linear algebra that does not cover LU, QR, SVD,
and least squares is out of touch with reality and in my opinion doing a disservice to those who are paying $$$
for an education.Specifically, those who are ever planning
to get a job in engineering or the mathematical sciences will at some time be expected to solve (or understand how
software like MATLAB solves) least squares problems, systems
of linear equations, eigenvalue problems, linear ODE's, optimization problems, etc...As a result, this book
is focused on matrices and computations. This book is practical in the sense that in the real world -where
numerical solutions are usually required - we are
forced to deal with a basis-dependent
finite-dimensional representation of our problem.

3. Those who require a second course in Linear Algebra covering Jordan Forms, the theory of linear operators, and more advanced material
will not have to unlearn anything from this book.In fact this book is a good stepping stone to further study.
For example, someone who comes to Hoffman/Kunze or Halmos after this book will better appreciate the more
abstract approach based on linear transformations. After all, how can anyone understand or appreciate
a formal abstract treatment of this material before one has a firm grasp of what is being abstracted?

4. Strang has a webpage with video lectures that augment the text and shed additional insight on the material. These
lectures are excellent and really demonstrate the love Strang has for teaching this subject to others.
In my opinion he has done the scientific and engineering communities a big service by writing this book and posting his
video lectures.

5. Strang has another text on Linear Algebra, Intro to Linear Algebra. Although that text is geared at slightly
a lower level, I like the present text better as a learning tool.
The Intro text is slightly more disjoint in its presentation
and seems to leave more for the reader to discover rather than just presenting the information.

6. If you really do not like Strang's writing style (which is very conversational, and in my opinion, better
than the dry style of other texts), tryMeyer's treatment ("Matrix Analysis and Applied Linear Algebra").Meyer is more of a traditional text and provides
material for both a first and second course on applied linear algebra (with more emphasis on a second course).

Good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow...more than I ever wanted to know!
This book takes on the very difficult challenge of linear algebra. The book is pretty good, but acces to Strang's online lectures is awesome! This guy is a very good instructor, and I highly recommend watching his lectures when going through this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the clearest text on Linear Algebra
I was fortunate to have taken this course and Applied Mathematics from Gilbert Strang at MIT in the mid-late 1980's. We used this and his Introduction to Applied Mathematics texts. The revised edition of this text is updated and contains newer applications, and is current for today's students.

The texts (both of them) were the clearest and most relevant texts in mathematics that I ever used. This, coupled with Professor Strang's enthusiasm and down-to-earth teaching style made these courses actually enjoyable to this geology major. I use both texts as references to this day in the increasingly numerical science of geology and geochemistry. Coupled with Matlab, the texts are very helpful in leading me through development of numerical models in my research and teaching.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Review of the 2nd Edition
"Linear Algebra and Its Applications" by Gilbert Strang is currently in its 4th edition, but this review is of the 2nd edition.I haven't seen the 4th, but I assume that it is as good as (if not better than) the 2nd.

The text is an excellent introduction to the subject.I was a new graduate student in applied mathematics in 1980 when I took a two-quarter sequence in linear algebra using this textbook. There are many other textbooks on the subject, virtually all of them in the traditional "Theorem-Proof with examples" format. It's easy to follow the logical flow in those texts, and that can sometimes be reassuring. However, Strang's textbook gives the reader deeper insights into the subject, though the reader will sometimes have to work harder to harvest them.It can sometimes be maddening to follow the logical flow in Strang, to separate the theorems from examples from observations. But the struggle is well worth it.I never found any logical flaws in Strang's reasoning (the same cannot be said for other texts), and Strang's notation was always conveniently general without being awkward.Over the years I have referred to Strang on minor points when other texts left me confused.

In short, I would recommend this book to any student as a reference, for self-study, or as a course textbook. But be ready to do the work to get the best possible understanding from it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars mystery and math
This is a juvenile mystery written with math clues. The heroine is a math whiz in school and applies mathematical principles to most everything. It uses Venn Diagrams, Parallel Lines, and the Additive Property of Equality to solve a possible murder. It gives young readers an intriguing approach to math.

2-0 out of 5 stars More gimmick than tale.
The idea is an interesting one: create a story based on math concepts. Much of the time, though, it seemed like the story was being twisted around so that a math concept could be inserted. Worse, the author couldn't resist waxing didactic about other things, like what the Bill of Rights is.

I agree with the reviewer who said that Tess isn't particularly likeable. She's unkind to others, she's full of herself, and she snidely explains very simple math concepts to her parents (like what a negative number is and the difference between a line segment and a line). For some reason, her parents have never heard these things before and are amazed.

Some of the math concepts introduced in the book are very simple (the meaning of > and < is taught in the primary grades). Others are very complex. The book will not really explain much about math concepts for struggling students, though it is an interesting idea.

I also agree with those who said that the plot elements were all pinched off at the end with quick and not-very-satisfying solutions. And these solutions are achieved by other people, not the protagonist.

One last peeve. As a teacher myself, I'm always annoyed by authors who are not teachers telling us what they think "good teaching" is. Invariably they seem to think a good teacher is one who imparts buckets of facts all the time (for example, the history teacher in the book rattling off facts about the Bill of Rights). This is not true. A good teacher is generally one who enables her students to *interact* with facts and concepts and to construct their own knowledge.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inappropriate for 9 year olds!
My daughter wanted this book, so I bought it for her for her birthday.I was very disappointed when a few pages into it she asked me what Suicide was! That topic is not appropriate and way too depressing for a nine year old!

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading AND Math are cool in Middle School
As the School-wide Language Arts Chair of a large middle school, I am always looking for books that will hook our kids.Secrets, Lies, and Algebra offers an interesting look into the 8th grade year of all students who are trying to find themselves in a world of mazes of friendships and family relationships. Most of the plot was believable in the middle school world. I particularly liked the "math" reasoning at the basis of the central plot. For those students who LOVE math and worry about reading a novel, this book offers a way to look at the universe in mathematical terms.Although I felt that the last few chapters left some gaps that were intended to be filled in by a sequel, the novel moved well, stuck to its format of offering each problem as an algebraic equation, and resolved the mysteries of the book cleanly and appropriately.I will certainly offer this title as an example of "reading across the curriculum" to all of the math teachers in my building. In short, the reader + the book = an interesting story line.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun read
I bought this for my daughter.Okay - I had to force it on her.She began laughing by the end of the first chapter and said she learned more about Algebra from the book than from her own school.Ms. Lichtman has done the unthinkable - used algebra to describe the angst of eighth grade and all the ensuing politics involved.

I read it and it is laugh-out-loud funny. The illustrations bring the points home.

A must have for anyone looking for a quick, fun read (and a great way to sneak in some math that is otherwise uncomprehensible in some academic environments!)

Bravo. This book is a winner! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Second Edition - is not the current edition
NOTE OF CAUTION

I am taking away one star from my rating because the product page does not make it clear that a newer edition of this book has been available for several years already.

ABOUT THE SOLUTIONS MANUAL

The 'Solutions manual' can be a useful reference to anyone not fully comfortable with the topic and I didn't think I needed one until we did 'Algebra 1' last year. For 'Algebra 2' I felt that I HAD to have it. The manual is needed because the 'normal' kit would only have 'full solutions' for the tests but the problem Answer Key book only hasthe correct answers for the practice and the problem sets but it does NOT show not the step-by-step.

For the THIRD Edition what you get is 370 pages showing the steps you take to solve every single practice and problem set question with the cautionary note from the authors what there is often more than one way to get to the right answer. However, the Solutions Manual tries to stay as close as possible to the methods and procedures as presented in the textbook. The early solutions to a particular type of problem show every single step while later solutions omit the simple steps.

I am very happy for ordering the Solutions Manual. Even though I don't expect to use it very often, it's reassuring to have it handy, just in case. This book, while not a 'must have' component of an 'Algebra 2 kit' gets 5-stars for thoroughness and for 'being there when I need it'.

NOTES OF CAUTION

There are TWO main things you must check and make sure that are right before you order:

- Make sure that the EDITION for this book matches your student's manual. The current is the THIRD edition but SECOND edition courseware is still available from vendors. THIS OFFER APPEARS TO BE FOR THE SECOND EDITION.
- Be aware that this is NOT an essential component of an 'Algebra 2 Kit' even though it may help.
- You will only need ONE copy, no matter how many students you may have. This should be mostly for teacher use.

What you MUST have in order to be able to teach Algebra 2 is (for the Third Edition):

- The "Algebra 2 Third Edition" student's textbook [this one] that includes the 129 lessons, 2 introductory or review lessons, Glossary, Index and answers to the odd-numbered questions.
- The "Homeschool Testing Book" that include the 32 tests, reproducible test answer sheets and the answers together with the 'step-by-step' on how to get there.
- The "Answer Key" booklet that has the answers to all the practice and problem sets but ONLY the answers, not the ways to get there.

NOTES:

The Dive Supplement
-------------------
I found the DIVE Math Instructional CD for Saxon Algebra 2 3rd ed. to be a very useful addition to the kit. In fact I am using it this year after using the 'Algebra 1' edition last year. Like it's the case with the Solutions Manual, you will only need one DIVE CD even if you have more than one student.

It's worth noting that DIVE is NOT a Saxon product. This is a separate product that closely follows the Saxon course and you should make sure that you match the Saxon edition with the correct version of the DIVE CD.

A Personal Note
---------------

I should say that, to us, the effectiveness of Saxon's method is no longer a matter or doubt or debate. My senior kid was awarded the 'Highest Average in Math' at his campus upon completing his 8th grade and I have little doubt that our math home study is/was a contributing factor to his being awarded the "President's Education Award" and his bing on the Honor Roll on all 4 quarters of his 8th grade. His younger brother is also a 'straight A math student (typical math grade average is 97-99 each term) and a Honor roll/Principal's List most of the time. I mention this because both of them used to be quite 'in the middle' as in 'mediocre' when we started with Saxon (that's what prompted me to 'take action'). Us practicing math after school clearly developed their study skills and, since math is so 'hard', it helped them master most of the other topics taught in school with ease.

And, finally, and this might have fit under 'practical advice' as well, I'd like to note that doing this is NOT easy. Covering 129 lessons ad giving 32 tests calls for a VERY SIGNIFICANT investment of time and effort from both parent and children. I estimate we spent anything from 90 minutes to 2 hours per lesson and we usually 'do math' 5 to 6 days per week with a typical math study year beginning at the end of August and ending sometime early or mid-May.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book arrived yesterday, very happy
My book arrived yesterday, we are very happy with it. The copy was clean and no markings. I washed off the hard cover with a cloth and it was perfect. This is exactly what we wanted as a supplement to our kids high school studies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool
My daughter was having trouble with Algebra and after getting this book, I was able to help her bring her grades up!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best math book.....EVER!
Let me be perfectly honest; I used to loathe mathematics with my entire being, that was before I began using the Saxon texts. Now I am confident in my study of algebra II and I really wish that each student woulduse this book!!! The examples are informative, precise, yet altogether interesting! Mr. Saxon leaves nothing to befuddle the student, and his approach reinforces the students confidence and their ability to do more advanced types of problems.

God bless Mr. Saxon, -his knowledge has brought joy and understanding to so many students- may he rest in heavenly peace! :)

1-0 out of 5 stars very disorganized book jumping from concept to concept
My son had this book for his algebra class, all of Saxon's books. Teachers are frustrted, student were lost. There is no organization to the book. I finally gave up and got Prentice Hall algebra for some sanity to prevail. ... Read more

1020 pages for a 1 year introductory algebra 1 course?Outrageous and with a price to match. The "friendly" marginal notes and "interesting" boxes make the book slow to navigate. It almost assumes that the student does not have access to a teacher who knows what he is talking about and that they are willing to devote 100% of their time to wading through this vast tome.
A decent teacher - public, private or home school - and a Cliffs Notes would be a better option than this paperweight.

This manual is an excellent study tool. It is limited to the odd-numbered problems. It has the same answers as are in the back of the book BUT, the manual provides a complete step-by-step procedure for how the answer was arrived at.
I bought mine used from a reputable seller on Amazon and it was in as good condition as a new one and much cheaper than the college bookstore's price, even with S&H.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent undergraduate algebra
Excellent undergraduate algebra, with emphasis on examples and interaction with other areas of mathematics, a mixture of simplicity and sophistication. For those studying the book I recommend to take a look at the beautifulon-line lectures of Benedict Gross(Harvard)-based on Artin's book [...]

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaches instead of expounds
Not having the experience of listening to Artin lecture, one can only surmise that this man has to be a great teacher. The text does exaclty that -- it teaches and there are precious few that accomplish that objective as well, maybe none. Almost every theorem or proposition is placed in context and explained thoroughly with clear and concise examples and the themes are well articulated and consistent. There are many "surveys of modern algebra" that also have extensive scope but none touch the clarity of this text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why You Should Get This Book Instead of Dummite & Foote
Artin's Algebra is a great book.It covers a good deal of introductory Algebra, leaving out some stuff, but ultimately covering everything you need to be able to move on to the next level, like Lang's Algebra. While Dummit & Foote is longer and covers more material than Artin, it is not as good an introductory book as Artin, and it's not as good as Lang for higher-level stuff.

Here's what I'd suggest:Get Artin then Lang.

2-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly insightful, deliberately disorganized text
I wish to first point out that several positive reviewers argue that the strength of the book is what it forces you to look for and that if you cannot find the missing puzzle pieces you must be mathematically weak or studying poorly. The argument seems to be that the book's strength lies in that which is omitted.

This is a silly argument, but it is telling of the pedagogical philosophy and communication bias in the book. The purpose of a text book is to communicate, but Artin's lazy stream-of-consciousness style will leave many out in the cold.

Indeed, the book does seem to be written for those who do not need it, an enormous sequence of casual asides to a lost conversation between students already versed in the field and a professor intent on communicating in fits and starts, short growls and nods.

As one reviewer noted, the text derives from Artin's lecture notes. This is not uncommon, but the book shows little evidence of any thought put into making the book useful as a reference. Rather it has many gaps both large and small. It is what one might expect from putting in the least amount of editorial work and hastily typesetting the notes for publication.

In terms of original content, Artin provides important insights. Still, while I can imagine thinking "what does Artin have to say about (blank)", I cannot imagine bothering to search a book so deliberately and thoroughly written to make the reader ask and answer their own questions.

1-0 out of 5 stars A totally useless textbook.
The book by Artin was the most useless math textbook I have ever used. His proofs are impossible to understand, the exercises are frequently useless (either trivial results or monstrously tedious), and for the difficulty of the text to understand, the rigor of the presentation is astoundingly low (i.e. proving everything with matrices). His proving most of his statements with verbal exposition is also annoying as it makes it impossible to reference results in the book when solving problems. Also there are the times when an essential part of a problem is not even defined in the chapter but only in some other exercise. He also expects one to be able to compute character tables, but I had to look them up on mathworld to actually know how to do the computations. The book also tries to provide geometric examples, but does not explain them well or use them consistently. Also, there was a serious lack of diagrams, and when they existed they were unenlightening.I came into this class with a fairly strong background in Linear Algebra (Using Axler's Linear Algebra Done Right) and was highly annoyed by the topics that were left out (like tensors and duality) and the things that were overemphasized (rigid motions in the plane, change of basis).Another peeve is the statement that "most complex matrices are diagonalizable".What is the term "most" doing in a math textbook? ... One of a series of developmental maths textbooks, this volume focuses on basic algebra, with applications. It provides a learning system organized by objectives, around which all lessons, exercises, end-of-chapter review tests and ancillaries are arranged. The last objective in every section is, where applicable, devoted to applications, and a specific strategy is suggested for each major application problem, encouraging students to plan problem-solving strategies before addressing the problems. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Poor textbook.Would have given 0 stars if possible.
Do not buy this book unless it is absolutely required for your class. The other reviewers discussing the lack of clarity and completeness in this book are telling you the truth. The presentation of the information is poor.

It's not that people are giving it bad reviews because it isn't "Mathematical" enough.Textbooks do exist that give a good treatment of the subject without going into gory detail. However, this book has information haphazardly organized and essentially glosses over almost everything in a "you get the hang of it, right? Lets move on" type feeling.

Find something else to buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Linear Algebra Book
The book was received quickly for a good price.Explanations in the book aren't very clear though.

1-0 out of 5 stars waste of money
This book was required for my Linear Alg class last semester. Like everybody else, I'm going to add another one star for this poor written book. I have about three other Linear Algebra books and this one has the most illogical order. It teaches linear transformation without even saying what a vector really is. It teaches you matrix multiplication after linear transformation. It never says anything about the dot product. So I think that the author assumes you to know something in advance. At some point you will go to a dead end. You'll found that the explanation is not enough. So you'll end up looking for other books or some other sources to help you understand the material. That's what happened to me. Fortunately, as I looked for helps on the net I found a youtube channel with awesome video tutorials. It is KhanAcademy. The guy is so famous that he's featured on TV news. He's a hundred time better than my professor.

So, my advice is NEVER buy this book. Spend money for something else. If you want an easy A and a clear understanding of basic Linear Algebra, check out that youtube channel: KhanAcademy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best textbook I've taught out of
Bretscher's linear algebra book is the best textbook I've taught out of, from 4 years of college teaching. It is thoroughly well written, in considered and elegant prose. The three huge advantages of this book are, firstly, it provides motivation, both scientific and historical, for all the concepts introduced. Secondly, the organization is very well thought out and can be made to flow nicely (despite, or perhaps because of, not being canonical as other reviewers complain about). Thirdly, computational and conceptual issues are introduced alongside each other, so that one understands the practical relation between the Gram-Schmidt algorithm and QR-factorization, for example. The dynamical systems material is very nice, as is the explanation of least-squares minimization. There are plenty of exercises from the trivial to the conceptual, although sometimes i would have preferred more exercises of middling difficulty. The book starts with systems of linear equations and introduces abstractions gradually, intended as a transitional course for would-be mathematics majors. For my student body of mostly economists and mixed scientists, the march of abstraction started to become hard, and adding more problems of the down-to-earth variety in later chapters might help.

In summary, I would recommend anyone considering taking or teaching a course in linear algebra to look over this book. Other books (Strang, or Schaum's outline for extra exercises) might be handy for different levels of students, but this is a fine book and worth leafing through for the historical notes and overview of the subject alone.

To the reviewer who complained the book introduced subspaces before spaces: I find the book's choice on this and similar matters very sensible. Every finite-dimensional space is isomorphic to R^n, and that's the setting where linear algebra first becomes useful, and where subspaces arise naturally as kernels and images. Later one notices that the same ideas apply in more general settings - but why leap into the void of generality before the most comprehensible examples are understood? Examples first!See Tim Gowers' comments on the subject in his blog.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Piece of **** I ever read in my life.
I am going to skip the intro and get on with the problems of this Son of a ***** textbook.

1. This has got to be the hardest math textbook I have ever read in my life. And I don't mean in a challenging way, I mean in a difficult to understand way. They do an extremely poor job on explaining Linear Algebra, examples are hard to follow, and there is no fundamentals at all. On the top of that, I think I've actually gotten dumber reading this pile of **** because I had to Google information, just because I was stuck on homework. This books believes that if they only show the theorems, definitions and a few USELESS examples, the student will learn. So to sum this all up, you won't learn any fundamentals or any tricks on how to solve matrix operations. Sometimes the author gets ****ing lazy and decided to let you do the proofs as homework problems. And no, these aren't proofs where you prove "if this, that happens," these are proof of definitions and properties, and this happens almost every chapter.

2. I want to talk about the "examples" more because they are worth mentioning. The book doesn't provide you with a solid example, even if it did, there wasn't enough to fully understand the concept. For instance, in Chapter 2.1 Ex5, it tells you about rotating a vector counterclockwise but the example doesn't tell you how to rotate clockwise. So on any problem that asks you to rotate clockwise (problem 34), you are screwed unless you read ahead into Chapter 2.2. And this happens all the time. In Chapter 3.4 they tell you how to do a transformation with coordinates in subspace, but the only example they provide you is orthogonal projection. None of the assign problems had to do with orthogonal projections, so again you are screwed unless you read ahead or asked someone for help. The only way to get around this is when your teacher assign even problems, and you do the odd problems just to check on the solution to see if it matches. That is literally the only way you will learn.

3. The solutions..... This is where the textbook bites you in the ass, and gets credit dock off your homework. The solutions in this textbook are so inconsistent, it is meant to confuse students. In Chapter 3.1, the solution to a Kernel of a transformation is for example [1, 0, -1]. Then, in Chapter 3.2, the textbook changes its ****ing mind and decides to write the same kernel of the same transformation as [-1, 0, 1]. Technically they are the same kernel, but that isn't what the solution on the back says, or the solution manual. So you can probably guess what's going to happen when the pathetic TA grades your homework. I am not kidding, everyone in our class had points taken off their homework because the kernel solution didn't match the solution in the manual, even though they are the same exact thing. We never knew what we did wrong until a few weeks after. So by reading from this textbook, you won't learn from your mistakes, you are going to keep making mistakes and suffer with it for the rest of your life!

4. Another thing I want to touch upon is the **** solutions the textbooks provide. The solutions are inconsistent, confusion and most of the time useless. Sometimes the questions are a bit complex, and if you look on the back in the solutions, they graciously said "Answers to more theoretical questions are omitted." (this includes graphs). Good job! at the same time, the textbook might as well tell every college student to go **** themselves! Sometimes the solutions doesn't even match the questions being asked. For instance Chapter 4.3 asked you write the basis of kernel, image, and the rank. On the back, each solution only has one answer, sometimes its a kernel, sometimes it is only the image, other times it's the matrix put into RREF. So unless you know how to do it and you gotten the problem right, the solutions won't help at all.

5. This last part consist the many ways how irritating the book can be. The books recycles a lot of the theorems and definitions. In Chapter 4.1, the examples are just a re-use of definitions and theorems from the previous chapters. Another things is that, some problems in the end are so tedious they tell you "You may use technology" (matlab?). Other times, the problems are too simple. Last but not least, some of the examples are written so it confuses you. Instead of a decent step-by-step answer, you get a cluttering of matrices and everything looks like a complete mess.

So let's recap:

1. Just a useless cluster of definition, theorems, and examples
2. Useless examples that don't help with the homework at all
3. Asking you to do proves as homework
4. Inconsistent Solutions
5. Inconsistent Solutions in the solutions manual
6. Lack of helpful solutions (no graphs)
7. Reusing the same theorems and definitions
8. Inconsistency in problem's difficulty
9. And a ton of other things!...

I can seriously go on and on about this pile of **** but it is starting to make my head hurt. This book isn't just bad, it is ****ing horrible. You don't learn anything, and what is worst, the book struggles you if you actually wanted to learn. If you designed a machine that turns things to opposite (black to white, big to small), you know what you will get by putting this book through that machine? The Holy Bible! This text book is a joke, the author clearly doesn't care if the students learn and he just wanted an easy cash-in. Unless you seriously have to take a class that requires this ****, only get this textbook used. I can't believe I have to put up with this textbook for another quarter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Paths Untaken
Many, many years ago when I was in school, you had the choice of subjects like alegebra or so called "commercial arithmetic,Anticipating, I would be working in an office, I saw no need to do the alegbra. What a huge mistake.
I am now 78 years old and to this day, I regret not having learned it- so may job advancements closed to me.It has always been a regret.I, every one in while decided it was something I would learn before I died because it was a path untaken. While I still may never learn it.... who knows????

3-0 out of 5 stars Only good if you're already good at math
This is the kind of book that is either going to help you out immensely, as it did for me, or completely baffle you. If you're already strong in math and want a comprehensive review of basic algebra topics (as we tend to forget some of these things as we are learning more advanced calculus), this book will serve you well. However, if you're looking for a hand-holding guide through algebra, you're out of luck. This book provides minimalistic and concise explanation, which you will find helpful if mathematically minded and annoying if you are not naturally good at math.

This book is packed full of both mathematical theory and practical applications. The first few chapters build up your skill in fractions, negative numbers, decimals, percents, roots, exponents, variables, factoring, etc. Later on you are introduced to a chapter on linear equations, another chapter on linear inequalities, and a following chapter on applications of linear equations/inequalities with plenty of word problems for you to apply the concepts to. The final two chapters are devoted to solving quadratic equations and to applying quadratic principles to word problems.

I would like give special commendation to the chapters on applications of linear and quadratic equations. They show just how essential math is to real life and manage to keep the course interesting. If you want to get anything out of this book, make sure you do all of the practice problems or you won't learn anything.

In short, if you like math and are already good at it, but jonesing for a review of the basics, then get this book. If you are a high school student stumped on algebra and not naturally good at mathematics, then this is not the book for you. Instead I would maybe recommend Master Math Algebra with a good problem book on the side. Or, if you don't feel like spending money, go here: [...]

Topics this book doesn't cover but maybe should:
-imaginary numbers
-complex numbers
-logarithms

My biggest criticism: THERE ISN'T A SINGLE GRAPH IN THIS ENTIRE BOOK! What kind of book hopes to teach algebra without showing a SINGLE Cartesian coordinate system in the whole thing? As such, you will learn absolutely nothing about conic sections in this book like parabolas, hyperbolas, ellipses, etc... which are pretty standard fare for ANY course in algebra.

5-0 out of 5 stars Purchased as gift
This book was recommended to me and I purchased it as a gift for a student of algebra. It is not the regular text book but it is helping the student. The student has told me several times how it has helped her.

1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage, really not worth the paper it is printed on.
Think of this book as a work book. It is full of problems and answers, It should be called algebra obfuscated. I would like my money back from the author.
Very few people will warn you about a bad book and I wonder how many people write reviews other then the people selling the books.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not particularly helpful
I didn't find the explanations very helpful, thorough or easy to understand. It seems that it would be appropriate for someone with fairly good math skills, but not for someone that is having problems grasping algebra or struggling with it. I am very disappointed with it as I didn't find it as what it is promoted to be. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars helpful!!!
Well, am a college student and i had never be good at math. I was having some problems in understanding some exercises so my teacher mentioned about this book and i can say that it helped me a lot to understand and do well on the course. Right now i'm still taking math courses (advanced algreba) and i refer to this great book when i forget something. I strongly recommend this book to everyone who is looking to improve their skills, have more practice or understand better. This book is great tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Happy
I purchased this book to makea quick review of Math and help my son. I am so happy that I will buy the entire collection from elementary Algebra to Calculus includingDifferencial equations, Geometry and Trigonometry. Great help for those who need a solid foundation in Math. You can't go wrong with Schaum's Outline.

3-0 out of 5 stars Satisfied for my current level, but...
while I agree with what everyone above has said, Ill add that the series of Schaum's have helped me tremendously. IF you have a basic understanding of the concepts and need reviewing, then this might be for you.. however as a newbie, I cannot recommend a book that is consistently filled with errors. Everything said above by other reviewers is correct; compact, easy to carry, lightweight, concise, to the point, tons of problems... they simply leave out that there are page after page, in some spurts, many errors. I am at about pre-calculus level, have used Schaums Outline of Arithmetic, this book here, and purchased their Outline of Precalculus edition awhile ago. Im strictly using these books for reviewing and their inaccuracy concerns me.. for example, when I arrive at the Calc level or higher where Im probably not going to be sure of what Im doing and I need something cheap, fast, full with problems and accurate.. I don't think I will be using Schaums as I don't want to be mislead with incorrect worked out problems. For review, if you have some experience, YES use these books - definately; you can work fast and the information is packed and it's cheap! If you have no clue about the subject at hand, don't buy them. I am for Schaums technique and presentation, but their accuracy must improve... I guess that the saying holds true, 'you get what you pay for'.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best book for studying mathematics
This book is suitable for both bad and good students at mathematics. Firstly, each category is explained easily but briefly. Secondly, there are many questions, so you can get used to each category and can solve many questions quickly. For another thing, this book is so compact that you can bring anywhere you go and read it. Finally but the most importantly, this book is excellent for people using English as a mother tongue. It is because my mother tongue is Japanese.

5-0 out of 5 stars It goes directly to the point. There are not excesive words.
I have been teaching since 1980 and I have been following Schaum's Collection also since I was a College student. Now, I am teaching Math at Mission High School in San Francisco and I have noticed that many of theexercises (maybe all of them) give students the increasingly maturity tobecome selfconfidents in math. Our scores went up! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
This workbook has been a great help for my daughter. She uses it to study for her exams and has done quite well. You must, however, buy the answer key separately. Look for "Algebra 1 Practice Workbook Answer Key", ISBN0-03-056499-9.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good extra practice workbook
I am a 9th and 10th grade algebra teacher.I bought this book as a way to provide suplemental practice worksheets, and, for that purpose, it's great. There is a lot of reinforcement of fundamental concepts on each topic, although I would have preferred a little more basic skill review and a few less word problems. However, for a student who basically "gets it" and just needs a little more practice to gain confidence, this is a great resource. ...
