THE PRINT IS SMALL, THE PAGES CLUTTERED
I bought this text to brush up on algebra on my way to studying more advanced math. I have one real complaint about this book, a complaint so egregious that I abandoned it in favorof the more user-friendly, "Algebra Survival Guide."

The problem is with the formatting of the text and the size of the print.The font chosen is so small, that reading the cluttered pages is depressing and maddening.Also, if I ran into a problem with a practice test, they would refer me back to a "frame" number--their word for paragraph.This meant I would have to find, without help the principle I apparently failed to understand. .

In sum, the text is poorly formatted--no large black section signs to lead the student forward--no feeling of a relationship between student and authors; nothing but cluttered pages.I have 20-20 vision, but gazing down at the cluttered page, my eyes grew tired--the number and syjmbols floating like wind-driven pollen all over the place. It's a an intmidating book, and not very user-friendly .The text lacks grace, color and liveliness, and is therefore unable lead the student forward with any amount of confidence.

Unnecessarily Confusing
I bought this book to help teach my fiance algebra before he starts school in the fall.It does cover everything BUT it the author seems to go out of his way to make everything more complicated than it really is.I wouldn't recommend it unless you already know algebra and are just looking for a review.

An absolute must for reviewing or learning algebra
This book is absolutely excellent.Well written, step-by-step learning with excellent examples and format.Easy to learn.I didn't find one typo mistake.A rarity today.With forty years of training under my belt, you could not get a better source for learning algebra.

Quality Study Aid
Okay, let me start off by saying that the first half of this book is very easy so I went over it quickly. The second half of the book is where I am rusty especially with the factoring. This book builds the foundation for algebra and soon as I finish it I plan on purchasing a more difficult algebra book that is more at the intermediate/college level. But for anyone needing to brush up on algebra 1 this book is outstanding. Its very easy to understand. I love these kind of books because I'm better at teaching myself than the teacher.

Great book! I bought this to help me brush up on my Algebra skills and test out of my college math placement. It worked. Very easy to follow. Author takes each problem step by step. For "mature" learner too
Last time I had algebra it was in high school, I didn't like it and it was a long time ago. I had to go back to the absolute beginning basics and this book really helped. Playful tone makes it much more approachable than the deadly dry textbook. Get the workbook too.

Editor -- proofread with someone who knows math, first.
I'm shocked.I've been impressed with the series but not this time.

I have three children, all in Algebra and all needing help.I went shopping for a supplemental text.I took a look at "Algebra I for Dummies" as a possible choice.I have other "for Dummies" books and like that this one comes with workbook.

I opened up the book to a random page and started reading.The page was on the greatest integer function.Their description was correct (greatest integer less than or equal to the value); however, the figures show the wrong result for a positive value ([3.8] = 4 if I remember correctly).I thought this was a simple typo until I noticed that the text attempts to justify it (BTW [3.8] = 3, not 4).

It would have been nice for the editor to send the book to someone who knows basic math.I tolerate typographic errors but not conceptual errors.I can't trust a tutorial that gets concepts wrong, even just one.I assume where one, many.

For when you need to brush up fast...
I bought the book because I was testing to return to school. One of the subjects on the placement test was Algebra, a topic I had not studied since high school. That was many, many years ago, and with the help of this book, I reviewed and it was very helpful, very easy to follow. I had two weeks to study and when I took the test, I passed the Algebra portion along with the rest of the test. I would definitely recommend this book.

Good for my purposes
I needed a quick refresher because I am job hunting and this sometimes comes up on interviews due to my occupation.I havent had to use this type of math for quite a while though.I dont disagree however with some reviewers who have complained that the material is not really written for beginners. I had to struggle with much of the book and had to go over certain chapters more than once. Also, there isn't nearly enough explanation of certain key concepts. You are expected, for example, to accept that a complicated equation is an equation with a power no greater than 2 in which the equation is set to equal zero. However the accompanying workbook was a great help; in fact, there is just enough explanation of each concept in each chapter of the workbook that I could almost recommendbuying the workbook as well as the main textbook. In the end, though it was a struggle at times, I was able to teach myself algebra from this book, and was able to take my placement exam with a passing grade. Like some other commenters. I bought this book because I am looking for a new job 2 years after leaving my prior one, and was advised that I should be ready to answer questions on it. I was panicked, because I was never a strong math student and haven't taken a math class in more than 20 years.

Algebra I Workbood for Dummies
Both books by Sterling are excellent for anyone wanting to study algebra.But it is obviously necessary to have both books, Algebra 1 and the Workbook in order to get full benefit.Without the exercises in the workbook, it is impossible to know if you really "get it" or not. The books build skills in a logical sequence.I wish I'd had these two books back in high school.I could have mastered the subject on my own!

Good review if you have to refer back to Algebra down the road. HAS ERRORS.
I am currently in College and had to review for a math placement test, so I bought this book. I'm not going to go in detail, it all works.

There is one error I found though. The distance formula is wrong. Instead of:

(x2 - x1)^2 + (y2 - y1)^2 !!!RIGHT WAY!!!

the book has it as

(x1- x2)^2 + (y1 - y2)^2 !!!WRONG WAY!!!

I have yet to take the exam, and my results will provide the better review.

I haven't quite finished working through the book, but I can say right now this is the best workbook I've ever encountered.

The book by itself is good for Algebra practice if the kid or whoever is learning it has an expert guide or teacher available offhand. Without the answer key, it would be impossible for a novice learner to ever know if he got the wrongor right answer!!
Go for the book if you are confident of your Algebra skills... I bought this book as a supplement with the original Textbook.... it is same chapter by chapter.I have some help.

Great suppliment for learning algebra.
My son will be starting high school and algebra this fall, but was left ill-prepared by the pre-algebra course he had in the 8th grade.Hopefully this book and it's accompanying workbook will get him up to speed by next month.

Works for us!
So far, I like this workbook and the guidebook together.We bought the Survival Guide Handbook and the Workbook after my 7th grader got a C on his report card.We thought he could use the review and extra practice over the summer.As the adult step parent tutor, I was worried I forgot all my algebra but the Guide Handbook helped refresh my memory.I like that it's a different format from a textbook.Textbooks (from what I remember) tell you and explains.The Guidebook offers the information and lessons in a question and then answering format.The guidebook also shows possible misinterpretations such as, "Is -2^2 the same as -(2^2)?"
So far, we are on page 18, and I haven't found that many mistakes in the answer key like a previous reviewer suggested.Just one. (Page 14, #20).I got 10.5 but the answer key shows the answer is 15.Did I make a mistake?

For us, this book suits our purpose well.It is simple, to the point, addresses possible misinterpretations, and has a predictable question and answer format.A more advanced student may need further explanation, more word problem connections.The world problems are all in the back on the last 4 pages.

Works well
I used this to refresh for an college algebra course. I like that it reads like you have no clue and it's helping you learn from the bottom up. I got an A in the class so that speaks for itself.

Best algebra guide on the market
Trust me when I say this the best Alegbra guide on the market.I know because I tried them all(no joke.)As an adult, who never had Algebra in high school, I was not prepared for it in college.And there are few college courses that go all the way back to the beginning, mine expected that you already had basic algebra fundamentals.The guide along with the workbook, actually replaced my textbook.The textbook was simply put, confusing, and unrelatable.The guide, and workbook were lifesavers for me.The clear, precise and easy to understand examples clarified much of what confused me.And associating all of the properties and laws to analogies worked liked a charm.In fact, I soon learned I knew th properties and laws better than my classmates and began using the analogies to explain them so they to could remember all the little tricks this guide taught me.My teenage son, who has struggled with Algebra, now has his own copies and wonders why his teachers have never thought to make it so easy to learn.

The Best Ever
I'll bet a lot of mothers have hugged this author.

I'm a homeschooler with one boy in college and another in public high school. I'm also math challenged so teaching algebra was a nightmare and I felt that my very bright older boys suffered because of it (though they are now both near the top of their classes). I was fine with teaching basic math skills as I know exactly where math falls apart for most kids who learn to hate it. Algebra was an entirely different story. I simply didn't get it, and consequently, neither did my boys. What they did get was that algebra was a horrible subject that should be hated. This feeling was not on the list of things I wanted my sons to inherit from me.

I was determined that it would be better for my younger two and I went in search of a user friendly book that would break it down to manageable steps so that I could teach it effectively and they could master it comfortably.

Enter Algebra Survival Handbook and Workbook. Combined, these two are an unbeatable teaching tool. My third born (who dislikes math intensely) has grown confident enough to teach himself with only occasional help from me. When I do have to step in, I'm able to quickly scan the previous pages and explain what he's missing without feeling like I'm all thumbs. I am learning as much as he is.

Each lesson carefully builds on the concepts you learned previously, just a few problems at a time, with only one or two steps added. His "ohh this is so easy--watch this--" approach builds concepts in the student. He also admits when something is confusing and then goes on to make sure that the student doesn't stay that way.

This is a great little book: good examples, to the point, explanations are clear.
Word problems organized by type or category.
I have used this book with many tutored students, helping them get over the fear of word problems, showing them the few manageable techniques for solving all word problems, and helping them build self confidence.

My beginning algebra teacher recommended this book as a way to become comfortable with word problems.I worked through the book over two weeks and by the end I was not daunted by word problems anymore, in fact, they became fun puzzles.The explanations are light-hearted and to the point.

I am studying for the OAT QR section and this book is a godsend. If you have no confidence in your math skills especially when it comes to word problems, this book will solve all your problems (no pun intended)! Each chapter addresses a specific problem type and thoroughly presents different variations of the same exact problem. It has plenty of practice problems for you to hone your new skills and detailed, step-by-step answers at the end of each chapter.

The best book for learning algebra word problems
I baught this book for my son and he is a 7th Grader. My son could have easily read and learned the book by himself but to support him I read and learned solving problems with him.

I wish this kind of book was available when I was in Jr.High/High school. Word problems have been simplified and categorized in such a way that you will not forget the solution approach for the rest of your life.

After a nearly 10 year hiatus - yikes - I am finally returning to college to finish my undergrad.While in high school and college I was NEVER able to grasp Math.Now that I am returning to college and found myself anxiously prepping for a "Math Placement Test", I scrabbled like no other to buy as many Math self help books as possible.With that said, this book was 1 out of 3 books that I purchased and is the BEST book by far!!I only wish I was equipped with this book in high school and college. After reading a few chapters, I jumped to Barron's Painless Algebra and never went back to any other book.If you are looking to go back to school or need Algebra 101 for any other reasons, this is definitely a fantastic start to obtain that basic core knowledge.Also, after purchasing these books on amazing, I randomly looked for Math help books at local book stores.On the random occasion I saw any appropriate books, they were 3 times the price of any amazon book and had little selection to choose from.

Memorize Shortcuts - Comprehend Nothing
The author reduces algebra to a bunch of simplistic formulas to memorize. While this may get a student through the test tomorrow it does nothing to further true mastery or comprehension of the material that will allow them to grow with mathematics or apply the material when presented differently than the author of this books presents it.

The thought that this book was suggested by my son's pre-algebra teacher makes me nauseated.

Extremely Easy for the beginner or as a refresher
I loved the painless series for Math Word problems I bought in 1997 so much I kept it. I'm just as impressed with the Painless Algebra,so I bought the Geometry and Life Science books too. This series is written in layman terms,is condensed, an easy read, even for those who have never had a course in any of the above.It's also small enough to carry with you for on the go reference. I wish I had this before failing Algebra three times. Not one of my school text books explained the subjects so clearly, provided plenty of examples worked out step by step,than provided exercises with answers for the reader to do. This book is only good if you need lots of practice problems to do. If you need to LEARN Algebra this IS NOT the book for you.

Not a last minet workbook
I had to finnish this over my summer vacation which would have been more accomplishable, but I had no clue I had anything to do until the last week, (I moved schools) which did not end well when I saw that some pages had 80 to 100 questions. My advise to future buyers- give yourself time! A lot of the info is basic math anyway, like fractions.

To the point, rigorous, inexpensive
I cannot tolerate books that beat round the bush or dumb things down. I value rigor and directness. That's why I love Schaums outline series. I used this book before taking classes in Econometrics, and learnt a lot in very little time, thanks to the direct style of this book. Thanks a lot, Schaums series.

It makes linear algebra easier if you are learning it in a class
So, I did not have this book while taking linear algebra, but I now wish I did.You see, I let my girlfriend borrow it for her class, and now, despite the fact that we've broken up since then, she still has the book and tells me it is saving her life.I did look through the book before letting her use it, and it seems to be a great,fairly comprehensive outline of linear algebra (go figure from the title, eh?).You will need a math-ish background to be able to follow the concepts presented, so I recommend this for use in a class or as a reference, but not so much as a "first time" study aide.However with all the worked examples it provides (and a little gumption) you could still learn a lot about linear algebra even without much of a math-background.It will be, almost certainly, much easier to understand than your typical text book.I would put in a word of caution, though, if you are planning to lend it to your girlfriend...

Good revision book, quite a few errors
First of all, this book helped me get 97% in my linear algebra test!

Heaps of practice problems, good explanations, but quite a few errors (minor).

It's a good study tool when used as a supplement to a class or another textbook. The problems are chosen well, the only problem is the book is riddled with errors. Fortunately, they adequately explain their solutions enough that you can go back and verify that they are the ones making the error. Overall I recommend it for the price.

Pros: Excellent as a supplement or even as a text. Lots of worked out problems, some are even proofs of theorms.The explanations are to the point and easy to understand.Good for math, physics or engineering undergrad majors.There is enough material for 1.5 undergrad semesters of Linear Algebra. Very appropriate for math GRE subject test review.

I bought this book to help my 12 year old daughter with her first class in algebra. I highly recommend it. I was able tutor my daughter without having to spend a lot of time explaining concepts, this book did that for me. Algebra: Structure and Method Book 1, while starting with the basic foundations, gets right into the harder structure of algebra and does not just glance over the concepts. This book will get you ready for college courses. Algebra: Structure and Method Book 1, is being used by our high school and one class at our middle school.

great textbook
This is a classic and a great one.I used this textbook 15 years ago for an 8th grade Algebra 1 class and just starting using it again.I love it!It is Algebra I, no fancy stuff, no additional lessons thrown in for I'm not sure what reason.It is sequential, concise, challenging--but not too much, and well written.The only thing I can see being a negative now is the lack of graphing calculator exercises or projects. I'm just going to find some to add to the course.

I love this book and hope it is around for another 15 years!!

Brief on Explanations
I've been going through this book page by page for the last seven months with my child (who is a straight A student) and we both find this book to be very short on explanations. IF you're using this book just for practice problems in conjunction with classroom teaching, then the textbook would be fine. I find that there is very little in the way of explanations, and what explanations of concepts that is present, is very brief and less than clear. The book does have a lot of practice problems (1/2 of which have the answer in the back).

Rigorous and complete
This book is a comprehensive algebra 1 course despite the implications of the words "Book 1" in its title.You can use it for self-instruction, because the answers to the odd-numbered problems are given at the back of the book -- and there are lots of problems.It is also a great source of supplementary material for students who are taking algebra 1 in school.Supplementary material is necessary because most algebra 1 courses these days are "dumbed down."The District of Columbia Public Schools, for example, uses a book (ISBN 0618250182) that has been stripped of traditional problems that show students the power of algebra -- "work problems," "mixture problems," "age problems" and so on.And it has been stripped of difficult problems in all of the topics that remain.The book under review here covers the traditional topics and has difficult problems in all topics.The book would be good for a differentiated course, because the problems in each section are grouped into three levels of difficulty, labeled A, B and C.

Great book!
I'm not enrolled in a math course right now but have been wanting to practice my math skills.I really love how each chapter sort of builds on a simple problem gradually making it harder.It is one of the few times that I could actually do the complicated problems without having to read the explanations.It does explain the problems with the regular mathematical jargon you would normally see but it has footnotes that explain it in simpler terms, which I actually appreciate.My only complaint is that I would have liked more practice problems.

Helped me pass my College Algebra class.
I loved this book, it does have a creative way of showing you and telling you how to do problems. I needed a book like this really bad, because usually i am not good at doing math like most people. This book helps out alot and it is worth your money if you are taking beginner college math classes.

I purchased this book because of the high rating and because of the "translated for people who don't speak math" tag on the front cover. Both are misleading.
I'm not sure how this book received so many 5 star ratings unless they are from friends of the author. The book is horrible. I have a bit of a background in algebra. I've been self teaching for about a year and a half. When I purchased this book I was having trouble with logarithms. None ofthe books I was currently using went into the amount of detail I needed. I couldn't believe how lost and confused I became while studying the section on logarithmic functions. So I decided to look through sections of the book which covered topics I already understood. Even though I already understood the material I had trouble following the patterns and logic of the instructions. Mr. Kelley does not have a gift for teaching. His explanations are muddled and his methods are bewildering. I half-joked to myself on several occasions while trying to study this book that Kelley must have been drunk or high while writing it. That is the feel the book has, as if it were written in a state of mild inebriation.
As for the implication that the book uses everyday English, that's not true at all. There is just as much jargon in this book as there is in any other algebra book you've ever used.
If you, or your child, truly needs help with algebra this book should be avoided at all costs. It is confusing and frustrating enough to inspire a life long contempt for algebra.

Good review book for those who did well in math and needs a refresher
I found this book to be very easy to read and follow. I was always good in math way back when I was in school, but I am currently retired and assisting students with their math in a community homework center. This is a great refresher book for me. But I do want to say that I have caught a few errors in the computation of some of the math problem examples in this book- this may throw some people off who are not quite sure of their math abilities.

Now I get it!
I'm good at math but bad teachers made me hate algebra since high-school. I hated carrying that trauma around so I decided to learn algebra and prove to myself that there was nothing to be afraid of. There Is Help For Algebra
my granddaughter was having trouble with Algebra, so I bought her the Book "Kiss My Math: Showing Pre-Algebra" by Danica McKellar.My granddaughter said she liked the book and she would love to get Danica's new Algebra book, "Hot X: Algebra Exposed", when it came out.When I saw it here on Amazon, I just had to order it for her.I am sure that the book "HotX Algebra Exposed" will help her because it is written in a way that makes algebra more fun and easier to understand.

the "promised" solutions are not on the "promised" website
I was so excited to receive this book and start working through it, however, my enthusiasm quickly diminished when I looked for the "promised" fully worked-out solutions via her website and found that none are available but are "coming soon".The school year just started and I had heard that her books could really help, but without the supplemental pieces, I'm not getting the help that was so "promised".I would have bought a different book had I known I wouldn't have access to what I really needed in order to learn.VERY disappointing...

Great for a general review of algebra
I graduated from college a few years ago, but I'm currently taking night classes to earn a pre-medical studies diploma so I can apply to vet school. One of the big requirements for veterinary school is at least 2 semesters of college math--something I didn't have from my undergrad experience. So I decided to start off my night classes with Precalculus and move up to Calculus.

But there was a flaw in my plan: I hadn't taken math since high school and had forgotten most of what I had learned.

Enter "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Algebra". I decided on this book because it combines both Algebra I and Algebra II into one tome. The author keeps his tone friendly and funny and I found myself remembering a lot more than I thought I would. There aren't an abundance of practice problems, but there are 2 problems for each "concept" (1 guided and 1 to do on your own). That was more than enough for me.

This is a great book if, like me, you've already taken Algebra at some point but it was years ago. You remember a lot more than you think!

Possibly the most important purchase of my life....?
I actually used to be bad at math. I managed to pass all my courses through middle school and got mediocre grades, but mostly because I did well on all the soft grades (projects, HW graded for completeness, etc.). When I got to high school my poor math skills were catching up with me, and I knew it. Passing Algebra I Honors with a seventy-something and failing several tests, I finally came across this book and dove into it when I came down with a cold and took a few days off from school. After this book I suddenly understood algebra much better and gradually over the next two years math became my best subject. This was all pretty important for me because I had planned to major in physics for a long time, and if it wasn't for this book I may never have caught up and gotten the math background I needed. It's strange to think of where I might be now if this book had never been written.

As for the book, the clarity is excellent. You will not find proofs here, but expect plenty of heuristics and analogies designed for the troubled algebra beginner. Practice problems are sparse, but problem sets from other sources (even the textbook!) will be much more accessible after reading this book. If I could give this book more than five stars......

SUPER
I stink at math, its totally a foreign language to me. I am currently trying to teach myself algebra so that I can forgo the elementary algebra and intermediate algebra before doing college algebra and my other math classes. So far out of ALL of the books I have purchased (A total of 9) THIS BOOK REALLY EXPLAINS things and makes me feel GOOD that I am actually GETTING MATH for the first time since middle school. I would definitely recommend this book to those who ARE having a hard time with math, just learning math, or revisiting math. I have yet to finish the book, but so far, it ROCKS!!!!

Wish I'd had this book back in High School
I've always struggled with math.From grade school through college, math has clouded my academic life.I held my own in Geometry, but Algebra, Trig, and Calculus were like a 3-volume mystery with half the pages missing.It was all simply incomprehensible.It didn't "click" for me--made no sense.No math teacher could penetrate my thick skull.

I was a "C" math student in high school and college, mostly due to charity from my instructors.I really didn't deserve to pass.I just wrote math off as impossible and went on with my life.Now as a military retiree enjoying a second career as a technical instructor, I feel I should have at least some grasp of math.Is it too late for me?Am I too old?I thought so until I started reading this little book.

What a breath of fresh air!My high school and college experiences would have been MUCH less stressful if someone had explained Algebra to me the way this book has.The humor is silly--the jokes are beyond corny.Yet the informal tone completely deflates the menace of Algebra.Math texts always seemed sinister to me--as unknowable as a book of voodoo spells.By contrast, "The Complete Idiot's Guide..." is about as menacing as the funny papers.The author chats about Algebra topics and techniques the way I might chat about football scores--as though it's no big deal.

And it isn't a big deal.Once I cracked the cover, I was solving & graphing equations within a couple of hours.More importantly, I understood what I was doing and why.That was a totally new experience.I went through a third of the book in two days, and I correctly solved every practice problem.I can't wait to get to the rest of it.That's new too.I've never, EVER looked forward to a math lesson before.So should you buy this book?Maybe.It isn't for everybody.

If you are a skilled or even average math student, you probably don't need it.If you are a highly effective math teacher--ditto.However, if you are a math tutor or a teacher struggling with tough cases (guys like me, for example) you really need to see the author's angle on Algebra instruction.If you are a "weak swimmer" like me, you absolutely should buy a copy.If you have been out of school a long time and you need a quick refresher, this book's a natural.If your own kids are struggling with Algebra and you don't know how to help them, this is how to help them!

Like my title says: I sure wish I'd had this book when I was in High School.

This book pretty much taught me everything I know about algebra, which is enough to pass a CLEP test.Good examples, clean explanations and balanced coverage of algebra concepts and topics.One criticism that I have is really more a matter of style points... while Mr. Kelley has obviously devoted much of his life to mathematics, he frequently writes negatively about it in what I feel is a blatant attempt to appeal to the likely demographic of reader for this book.Well, I don't like someone telling me how boring or lame a subject is, especially when I have to learn it. ... Helpful workbook
I bought this workbook to use with students I am tutoring over the summer.Each page in the workbook has an example on it followed by a few problems.(The number of practice problems varies depending on the topic.For example, one page has students write and graph three inequalities to solve a word problem; this page only had the one problem to solve.)The book's format is perfect for my students because they can refer to the example if they have forgotten how to work the problems, and the number of problems is small enough that they don't feel overwhelmed (especially since they are on summer break!).

How is one to know they are learning/progressing if they can not check their solutions? This book is a waste.Now i've got to buy something that has the solutions.

Fast delivery
This book arrived very fast, in only 3 days. Although there were some pencil marks inside, it was in good condition.

Great book-no need for a teacher!
I used this textbook last year for my Algebra II class. I personally loved this book. It had very good, worked-examples in each section that were exactly the same as the practice problems given. Most textbooks start out with some information explaining what is going on, and then the student is just supposed to put the pieces together on how to do the problems, whereas the examples in this book show the student exactly how to do the problems. My algebra teacher was not very good, and while she did work out examples on the board for the class, they just never made sense. By the end of the year, I stopped even listening to her lessons and I just did the problems in the book on my own. I made an A in the class, and even though math is one of my weaker subjects, I think I learned enuogh to do fine on the SAT and ACT.

However, my teacher disliked this book. She said that it really needed to include more graphing, and that it was outdated.

To each his own, I guess. I definitely think that its many clearly layed out examples helped me.

This book is a great home reference guide for Algebra and pre-algebra, and especially if your child is ahead of the class and needs to self-teach new concepts.

A Great Book for Getting to know Abstract Algebra
I am in a abstract algebra class and am using this book along side my text.Unlike my text the book explains the ideas behind the mathematics involved and gives relevant examples of what it is talking about.It does not follow my book exactly in order, but it does have a section on all the topics in the book.I would suggest using this book along (or instead of) side of any text on abstract algebra.

Superb introduction to abstract algebra
I fully agree with the comments of the previous reviewers. This introductory book on abstract algebra is simply superb.
The author uses a discursive language, pretty unusual for a book of this type but extremely effective. While going through this book, you have the impression not of reading a textbook but of "listening" to the author talking to you.
I am not a professional mathematician, and therefore I don't feel entitled to judge about its mathematical rigor but I have read and studied similar textbooks on the subject (like Fraleigh and Gallian) and the clarity of this book surpasses them all.
The author provides lots of exercises and some worked out solutions.
Definitively this is my strongest recommendation for a book on this subject.

Hands down the best written book on introductory abstract algebra
This is an excellent book on abstract algebra that makes the transition into this difficult area
as painless as possible. As a engineer who was forced to learn group theory, I looked in at least 50 books
on this subject (another good choice is
Groups and Their Graphs by Grossman)
and Pinter's treatment was the most user friendly treatment I came across.
Also, this book is in no way dumbed-down as it covers similar ground as Fraleigh's well-known text and goes all the way through Galois Theory.

I have no doubt that most physicists and applied scientists would
also love the style of this book. However, ivory tower mathematics types might put their nose up at the
way Pinter develops the material.
Specifically, this book goes to great lengths to show the scaffolding behind the ideas and proofs. Concrete
examples and toy problems are given without apology.
As a result, the
mathematicsis brought alive and not depicted as cold and detached theorem proving. This book actually
is a perfect response to the snobby elitism exuded by many
advanced math texts.Overall, this book is a model of good mathematics texbook writing.My highest recommendation.

One final comment regarding the dover edition of this text -I would also recommend trying to dig up a used hardcover version of the 2nd edition.
The dover edition is typeset in very small print and is hard to read.

Don't let this book be the one that got away...
Each class I've taken as a grad student, I've gone a little overboard buying all sorts of books on the subject matter. I like that each author has a unique style and approach.

In abstract algebra, there are the standards (Dummit, Hungerford, etc). These are the more down-and-dirty texts. They're good. They're thorough. They're rigorous. They do the job quite well if you already have some familiarity with the subject.

Then there are the older, cheaper books, like Deskins. It's alright. Some people nay-say it, but whatever: it's cheap and is one more voice to add to the choir.

Pinter, though, reads like a novel---and not in a cheesy way. As I waited for a friend in Barnes and Noble, I half-heartedly picked it up to skim through it... The introduction hooked me--it sums up what lies ahead like a movie trailer, leaving one mad to find out the whole story. Some might shrug this book off as a lowly"undergraduate" book, but if this is the case, you're missing out on the one author who has been able to deftly convey just how inspiring this subject really is. No other book has convinced me of the power of abstract algebra like this book.

Will it be the only book you read on the subject? If it is, then it was a good choice.

Having experience with the more standard tomes out there, there is the chance that I think this reads like a novel and is "so good" because I am familiar with the material. But, seriously, this is the kind of book that you're lucky to stumble across, whoever you are: a math nerd, physics geek, bio dweeb, or chem freak.
