Product Description
'Aircraft Structures for Engineering Students' provides a completely self contained course in aircraft structures, which includes discussion on the fundamentals of elasticity and aircraft structural analysis, as well as the associated topics of airworthiness and aeroelasticity. Although much of the basic material is timeless, the author has updated the text throughout, including new material on areas that have developed since the last edition - in both educational and technological terms. As well as extensive revisions, the new edition includes a solutions manual for all end of chapter problems to accompany the text.

The expansion of aviation makes aircraft structures an increasingly important topic at undergraduate level. Since its original publication in 1972, this book has become the 'bible' for aircraft structures.

Extra worked examples and problems. Latest materials in aircraft construction. Airframe loads produced by manoeuvring. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fit For Purpose
This is what the title says - for engineering students. It is not really useful for the practicing aircraft structural analyst. The mathematics presented is considerably more involved than is presented in most other airframe analysis texts, with empahsis on how stress formulae are derived.A bit over the top if all you want is to know how to analyse a practical problem, but ideal for the student who needs to know the foundations of analysis.A little bit annoying how equations are quoted by number, forcing the reader to continuously return to previous chapters.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad examples, NOT clear
The examples are not clear. They only show numbers with no units and do not even explain where the numbers came from.I am a student so I had to buy this book.I would not recomend buying this book unless you absolutly have to. I have seen alot of engineering books and this one is truely one of the worst.

4-0 out of 5 stars effective
This useful book gives a strong theoretical basis on structural analysis. In fact the maths involved is advanced but clearly explained, so that it is quite easy to follow the theory presentation. Worked examples,as well as line illustrations, are very helpful, efficaciuosly completingthe expositions. In the end ,a quite comprehensive textbook. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Jonathan Erdmann
I am an aerospace engineering student at the undergraduate level and used this text in an astrodynamics course.I felt that the author did a good job developing the fundamentals needed but lacked some important derivations that would have been usefull at times.I also enjoyed some of the non-technical aspects of this book as well, such as the sections devoted to our solar system and its characteristics.

I used this book along with Fundamentals of Astrodynamics by Roger Bate, Donald Mueller, and Jerry White - which has been used at my university for more than twenty-five years.I would suggest purchasing both books at once as doing so will give both a modern viewpoint of the subject as well as the derivations needed to understand the basics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory and reference book
This book is easy to read and contains several good exercises. Ideal for undergrads looking to learn about orbital mechanics, attitude control, and trajectories. Also excellent as a quick reference for more advanced students. The only complaint I have about the book is that some of the diagrams are not very well drawn, which can be somewhat annoying, especially if it's for a homework problem!

4-0 out of 5 stars Aerospace Engineering Student
This book is really designed for a beginner level class in astrodynamics.I used it for my beginner class, and I found the book to be extremely helpful. Now, taking graduate level courses in astrodynamics, I still use Wiesel's book! When I need to look up basic formulas, I use this book often. If you're looking for a more advanced book in astrodynamics, look into Vallado's Fundamentals of Astrodynamics and Applications. However, for the beginner level, Wiesel does an excellent job of explaining the material and presenting the mathematics behind the equations. ... Editorial Review

Product Description

The authors and their colleagues developed this text over many years, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in structural analysis courses at the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering of the Georgia Institute of Technology.

The emphasis is on clarity and unity in the presentation of basic structural analysis concepts and methods. The equations of linear elasticity and basic constitutive behaviour of isotropic and composite materials are reviewed. The text focuses on the analysis of practical structural components including bars, beams and plates. Particular attention is devoted to the analysis of thin-walled beams under bending shearing and torsion. Advanced topics such as warping, non-uniform torsion, shear deformations, thermal effect and plastic deformations are addressed. A unified treatment of work and energy principles is provided that naturally leads to an examination of approximate analysis methods including an introduction to matrix and finite element methods.

This teaching tool based on practical situations and thorough methodology should prove valuable to both lecturers and students of structural analysis in engineering worldwide.

This is a textbook for teaching structural analysis of aerospace structures. It can be used for 3rd and 4th year students in aerospace engineering, as well as for 1st and 2nd year graduate students in aerospace and mechanical engineering.

Product Description
This is a long-overdue volume dedicated to space trajectory optimization. Interest in the subject has grown, as space missions of increasing levels of sophistication, complexity, and scientific return - hardly imaginable in the 1960s - have been designed and flown. Although the basic tools of optimization theory remain an accepted canon, there has been a revolution in the manner in which they are applied and in the development of numerical optimization. This volume purposely includes a variety of both analytical and numerical approaches to trajectory optimization. The choice of authors has been guided by the editor's intention to assemble the most expert and active researchers in the various specialties presented. The authors were given considerable freedom to choose their subjects, and although this may yield a somewhat eclectic volume, it also yields chapters written with palpable enthusiasm and relevant to contemporary problems. ... Product Description
The goal of this book is to show how potential flows enter into the general theory of motions of viscous and viscoelastic fluids. Traditionally, the theory of potential flows is thought to apply to idealized fluids without viscosity. Here we show how to apply this theory to real fluids that are viscous. The theory is applied to problems of the motion of bubbles; to the decay of waves on interfaces between fluids; to capillary, Rayleigh-Taylor, and Kelvin-Hemholtz instabilities; to viscous effects in acoustics; to boundary layers on solids at finite Reynolds numbers; to problems of stress-induced cavitation; and to the creation of microstructures in the flow of viscous and viscoelastic liquids. ... Product Description
Nickel-hydrogen battery cells provide one of the longest-lived and most reliable rechargeable battery systems ever developed. The Aerospace Corporation was instrumental in the research, development, and testing of such batteries. Primarily developed for use in satellite and space power systems, their exceptionally long life was well worth the high cost associated with the technology, and they rapidly replaced most of the nickel-cadmium batteries used in earlier satellites. This book provides the reader with an in-depth view of nickel-hydrogen cell technology: how it was developed, how and why it works, how to implement it and realize its ultimate capability, and what can go wrong if it is not properly managed. The book is organized into three separate parts that provide a balanced picture of the development of nickel-hydrogen cell technology, the fundamental principles of operation for the key components in the cell, and the key concepts involved in the use of nickel-hydrogen technology in satellite power systems.Part I introduces the subject, Part II explores the fundamental principles involved, and Part III discusses the application and practice of using state-of-the-art nickel-hydrogen cells in battery power systems. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good but exceedingly mathematical
Obviously a work of very high quality. But the author is more preoccupied with outrageously complex mathematical models than with explaining what they are good for. A good reference if you are extremely familiar with the topics and are looking for a research-orientated, thick analytical coverage. Too far-fetched otherwise.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful -- but scarcely modern
Engineering Analysis of Flight Vehicles was originally aimed ata very narrow target -- the trained but unspecialised engineer, whosefirst exposure to aeronautical engineering would come in graduate school through this book. It hits that target quite well, with one warning I will mention below. What if you are not that graduate student? It depends. This book will be of very little use to you if are, for instance, a pilot wishing to know more about aeronautical engineering, or a shade-tree designer prototyping a homebuilt aeroplane, beginning from a layman's level. If you are that person, you might still learn from this book, but you must dust off your calculus and prepare to take it slowly and work the equations intensively... which may not be what you had in mind. The unprepared reader will sink without a bubble after Chapter 1, 'The Morphology of Flight Vehicles,' a basic introduction, when at the start of Chapter two Ashley says, 'Out of respect for brevity and the reader's prior education...' he will not repeat the rudiments of engineering science.

The Engineering Analysis mentioned in the title is the dynamic analysis... don't look for structural analysis here, which is just as well given the age of the basic material.

I personally find the book useful in my engineering cross-training, and it's led to having a lot of fun with numbers. I got a kick out of the coverage of space-launch dynamics which makes up much of the last third of the book, although I'll never have a practical use for it. (I don't know: does this book sell well to North Korea?)

The warning I mentioned? Engineering is not a static science, and this book is OLD.Ancient, even. Aero engineering has seen changes even since Dover republished it in 1992, and they published it unchanged from its 1974 debut -- in 1974, the computer I used resided forty miles away, DC-3s were still in scheduled service here, and the materials many modern aircraft are made from weren't out of the lab.

There are a few annoying typos, even though Dover claims to have corrected the original text in this regard. Either they used an illiterate copy editor or the original was REALLY pretty grim. However, I have not found any typos yet in the equations.

In conclusion the book is a good but dated text for someone crossing over into aeronautical engineering from another engineering or scientific discipline. One thing that does recommend it is its bargain price, a tiny fraction of the cost of a more up-to-date textbook. ... Read more

Product Description
Low Reynolds number aerodynamics is important to a number of natural and man-made flyers. Birds, bats, and insects have been of interest to biologists for years, and active study in the aerospace engineering community, motivated by interest in micro air vehicles (MAVs), has been increasing rapidly. The primary focus of this book is the aerodynamics associated with fixed and flapping wings. The book consider both biological flyers and MAVs, including a summary of the scaling laws-which relate the aerodynamics and flight characteristics to a flyer's sizing on the basis of simple geometric and dynamics analyses, structural flexibility, laminar-turbulent transition, airfoil shapes, and unsteady flapping wing aerodynamics. The interplay between flapping kinematics and key dimensionless parameters such as the Reynolds number, Strouhal number, and reduced frequency is highlighted. The various unsteady lift enhancement mechanisms are also addressed, including leading-edge vortex, rapid pitch-up and rotational circulation, wake capture, and clap-and-fling. ... Read more

Product Description
The promise of MEMS for aerospace applications has been germinating for years, and current advances bring the field to the very cusp of fruition. Reliability is chief among the challenges limiting the deployment of MEMS technologies in space, as the requirement of zero failure during the mission is quite stringent for this burgeoning field. MEMS and Microstructures in Aerospace Applications provides all the necessary tools to overcome these obstacles and take MEMS from the lab bench to beyond the exosphere.

The book begins with an overview of MEMS development and provides several demonstrations of past and current examples of MEMS in space. From this platform, the discussion builds to fabrication technologies; the effect of space environmental factors on MEMS devices; and micro technologies for space systems, instrumentation, communications, thermal control, guidance navigation and control, and propulsion. Subsequent chapters explore factors common to all of the described systems, such as MEMS packaging, handling and contamination control, material selection for specific applications, reliability practices for design and application, and assurance practices.

Edited and contributed by an outstanding team of leading experts from industry, academia, and national laboratories, MEMS and Microstructures in Aerospace Applications illuminates the path toward qualifying and integrating MEMS devices and instruments into future space missions and developing innovative satellite systems. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Current State of the Art and Projections for the Future
MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS) and the Microstructures that can be built from them offer significant potential for operation in both air and space craft. In these applications, weight is expensive, absolute reliability is mandatory, and while cost is always a consideration, it is subordinate to the first two criteria. MEMS devices have reached the point where they are beginning to be used in every day assemblies such as wrist watches and air bag accelerometers. At this time a series of MEMS have been flown in orbital and sub-orbital flights.

This book is both a report on what has been done and a projection of what may be expected in the next 10-20 years. The three editors are all at John Hopkins Applied Physics Lab and have worked extensively in MEMS projects for many years. Individual chapters in the book represent a Who's Who of the field from laboratories all over the United States.

Each of the chapters in the book typically discuss one aspect of a MEMS: micro thrusters, shutters, communications devices, instrumentation, sensors of various types, and much more. This is the first book I've seen that presents such a rounded and complete overview of the field. ... Read more
