Product Description
This text introduces a comprehensive mathematical formulation of the three-dimensional ocean acoustic propagation problem by means of functional and operator splitting techniques in conjunction with rational function approximations. It presents various numerical solutions of the model equation such as finite difference, alternating direction and preconditioning. The detailed analysis of the concept of 3D, N x 2D and 2D problems is useful not only mathematically and physically, but also computationally. The inclusion of a complete detailed listing of proven computer codes which have been in use by a number of universities and research organizations worldwide aims to make this book a valuable reference source. Advance knowledge of numerical methods, applied mathematics and ocean acoustics is not required to understand this book. It is oriented toward graduate students and research scientists to use for research and application purposes. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, but not hands on
I bought this book for two reasons: 1) I was beginning some experiments with ultrasonics, and I wanted a "handbook" of sorts. 2) In addition to these experiments, I was wondering if I could attempt some Finite Element modelling, and I needed a book that could help me translate stress-strain data to acoustics.

For #1, I was somewhat disappointed, but it's my fault. This book is a dense, theoretical exploration of the topic of acoustics. It's first principles, through and through. It is not a quick reference handbook, not really a book you can flip through and say "oh... yes. I'll have to remember that." I was hoping for some detailed examples, but instead I've gotten more than I ever asked for. In some ways, I suppose this can be a good thing, but in others, it isn't.

For #2, I found everything I need to know in the first 6 pages. Really. Start with F = d/dt(mv) and go from there (I suppose F = ma just doesn't look complicated enough). After that, the book is already into Bessel functions in 1000 words or less.

I was really hoping for a page somewhere that said: Maxwell's Equations for Acoustics (complete with analogies between E&M and acoustics). I didn't find it. Maxwell's Equations are mentioned on page 799-800, on a mathematical assault of "magnetoacoustic waves".

This book is a lot like John David Jackson's "Classical Electrodynamics". It is *the* book, the comprehensive book, the one that all of the graduate students regard with an uncomfortable mixture of deep respect and dread. This dense, heavy book is good for slapping somebody around, both literally and figuratively. Reading through the book makes me wonder how in the heck I ever got a Ph.D. when there were people out there writng books like this. I can't give it 5 stars because I don't see how anyone can get anything out of the book without devoting half of their life to it, but I give it at least 4 stars because it's more than a person will ever need to know about acoustics. It's a masterpiece, but not practical for the scientist looking for a good reference text.

3-0 out of 5 stars Would have been 5 stars, but too many printing errors
Overall the depth of this text is exceptional. Morse and Ingard's greatest strength is their skill at explaining the physics behind the mathematics in appropriate terms: with simple expositions when possible, but with unapologetic complexity when that is what is required to properly and precisely motivate a discussion. Exercises provided at the end of each chapter are usually challenging without being so difficult they end up discouraging the student.

Unfortunately the authors' precision is not matched by this edition's typesetters. A single errata page is included on one of the front leaves, but as the reader goes through the text he or she will quickly realize that it is littered with typesetting errors. An accurate and comprehensive list of errata would cover much more than a single page. In some cases the printers have scribbled in corrections by hand. Equation and section number references are also sometimes incorrect. Previous hardcover editions don't seem to have these issues. If you can find one, you're better off paying a few extra dollars to get it. In no way is this edition suitable as an assigned textbook for a university acoustics course, although it's invaluable a secondary reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still remarkable
I am constantly amazed by this remarkable book. It remains a topical reference for theoretical methods in acoustics, despite the advent of computational methods that allow modern acousticians to solve models on their desktop. I recently had the job of reviewing a patent for an acoustic transducer -- and sure enough I found this "modern" idea in good-ol' Morse and Ingard. In my opinion it is a must.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for acousticians
This book was lying on the bookshelf long enough, because the title " Theoretical Acoustics" did not encourage me to take it up with any commitment. I work in the field of acoustics and I had to work on the basics of Moving Sources and that was the time I picked it up to read. The material was so clearly presented, with clear reasoning, that it motivated me to read the preceeding chapters as well. The book is very clearly written and presented. It assumes no acoustic or vibration background for the reader. The subject is built up step-by-step without comprimising on either physics or mathematics. The treatment of the subject starts with basic vibration theory, without which any further development in Acoustics is impossible and then introduces the Wave Equation. It proceeds with Radiation and Scattering of sound. This is highly relevant from the view of scattering of submarines, hulls etc., among other applications. More advanced treatment on how sound waves behave in ducts and rooms is presented. The section on structural acoustic coupling is very well presented. The entire book assumes that one has a sufficent background on fundamentals of differential equations and maths in general. If one has a flair for maths, then this is the book for acoustics. Treatment is complete with sufficient physical insight provided into the equations. This book is a must for acousticians and researchers in acoustics. An excellent work by one of the most regarded reserchers in the area of applied and theortical mathematics. ... Read more

Product Description

This revised and expanded edition of a classic textbook provides a concise introduction to basic concepts of acoustics and digital speech processing that are important to linguists, phoneticians, and speech scientists. The second edition includes four new chapters that cover new experimental techniques in acoustic phonetics made possible by the use of computers. Assuming no background in physics or mathematics, Ladefoged explains concepts that must be understood in using modern laboratory techniques for acoustic analysis, including resonances of the vocal tract and the relation of formants to different cavities; digital speech processing and computer storage of sound waves; and Fourier analysis and Linear Predictive Coding, the equations used most frequently in the analysis of speech sounds. Incorporating recent developments in our knowledge of the nature of speech, Ladefoged also updates the original edition's discussion of the basic properties of sound waves; variations in loudness, pitch, and quality of speech sounds; wave analysis; and the hearing and production of speech.

Like its predecessor, this edition of Elements of Acoustic Phonetics will serve as an invaluable textbook and reference for students and practitioners of linguistics and speech science, and for anyone who wants to understand the physics of speech.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent teaching and resource
Ladefoged's book is, simply stated, great. Complex ideas and principles are broken down into digestible chunks, yet not too simple for those already familiar with phonetics or speech science. The many examples are drawn primarily from English, but the underlying concepts are applicable to all languages.

An excellent resource for anyone interested in acoustic phonetics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended
This book is a major achievement from the pedagogical point of view.
For instance, Discrete Fourier Transform basic principles are clearly explained in chapter 10 using intuitive arguments (correlation and orthogonality). The same happens with other tough subjects for those studying acoustic phonetics, like LPC (chapter 11). And some explanations come with simple algorithms, intended to illustrate what is being discussed.
But, on the other side, the book has some (minor) flaws:
in chapter 2, p. 18, the author gives the simple pendulum as an example of a system where frequency of oscillation is independent of the initial conditions (in this case, the initial displacement angle). This is wrong. It is approximately correct just for small angles. For angles close to 90 degrees, the error comes close to 18%;
chapter 6 does one of the most common (and, therefore, one that should not be present in a book for beginners) mistakes in acoustics: taking sound power instead of sound pressure when talking about loudness;
there is an excessive number of typos in chapter 11.

But apart from that (which makes me give it 4 instead of 5 stars) it is an excellent start for students or professionals (my case), either from linguistics, engineering (my case) or medical sciences, in need for an introduction to this fascinating subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars acoustics of speech
This book is great although very basic. It is very understandable to someone who knows little about speech acoustics but a little about musical acoustics. It is easy to read and understand

5-0 out of 5 stars Ladefoged finally found time to update his 1971 book
Major improvements areusing the source-filter in place of spring resonance model and fine tutorials on digital speech processing. An excellent first text for the student phonetician. For more advancedstudents use my 1999 text. J.M. Pickett. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference, not for the do-it-yourselfer
This book is a comprehensive look at the anatomy of a guitar. It does not give enough details to use as a guide to building your own guitar. The color pictures are limited to 12 pages inside center of the book. The rest of the pictures are black and white. There is plenty of discussion of the dreadnaught style, but after reading everything I still didn't have a good idea how it differed from the standard guitar. This book's strong point is the history discussion. If you are looking tobuild a guitar I recommend "Classical Guitar Making: A Modern Approach to Traditional Design" by John S. Bogdanovich.

4-0 out of 5 stars What's under the soundboard, for those who want to know
There isn't much that the authors don't cover about what goes into a guitar, except for the actual methods of construction (for which you have to go to the Kinkead or Cumpiano books). In this book, you'll learn more than you'll ever need to know about woods, strings, and microphones, and the basics of how to optimize the adjustable bits for your style of playing. The authors know their stuff cold, and it shows.

To get the sort of knowldege this book offers, you have two choices. You could hang around guitar shops for years and years talking with salesmen, customers, repair people, and performers, and learning from them what they consider important in a guitar. Or, if you have a real job, you could read this book instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very detailed, more than I expected.
I already have many books on the acoustic guitar, describing technical information, history or concentrating on just one brand.
This book is the most detailed technical book as meant for acoustic guitar owners so far. Each and every part of the guitar is described. Things like fretboard radius or different lacquer types, maintenance, storage, wood with all their aspects. Too many things to mention.

Even a specialist will find some new interesting info.

There are a few color photo's to brighten up the book. I would have preferred a bigger size book (the pages are a little small), but the text is very well written and a pleasure to read. A bigger size plus hard cover and a few more pictures would make it a ***** book for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read..
For me, this has been one of the best books i've read in a long time.. It is hard for me to put down.. I have been interested in music as long as I can remember and have played guitar and been interested in the dynamics of sound structure as long.. I know alot of laymen things about the guitar but this book has broken down this incredible instrument and went through each part, step by step in easy to read and understand writing. I am now getting into the art of being a Luthier and this book is full of helpful ideas and terminology. ... Read more

Product Description
This is a remarkable exploration of how sound permeates all aspects of life - from the streets to our homes, and from shopping malls to the underground. "Acoustic Territories: Sound Culture and Everyday Life" offers an expansive reading of auditory life. It provides a careful consideration of the performative dynamics inherent to sound culture and acts of listening, and discusses how auditory studies may illuminate understandings of contemporary society. Combining research on urbanism, popular culture and auditory issues, "Acoustic Territories" opens up multiple perspectives - it challenges debates surrounding noise pollution and charts an 'acoustic politics of space' by unfolding auditory experience as located within larger cultural histories and related ideologies. Brandon LaBelle traces auditory life through a topographic structure: beginning with underground territories, through to the home as a site, and then further, to streets and neighborhoods, and finally to the sky itself. This structure follows sound as it appears in specific auditory designs, as it is mobilized within various cultural projects, and queries how it comes to circulate through everyday life as a medium for social transformation. "Acoustic Territories" uncovers the embedded tensions and potentiality inherent to sound as it exists in the everyday spaces around us. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Find
This is a must own book for Acoustic Guitar fans. It provide an extensive history of the acoustic guitar makers and a brief history of some of its well know artist. My used book arrive in excellent condition and could not be more satisfied.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous illustrated history of acoustic guitars
If you love acoustic guitars, you'll love this book. I pored over it hour after enjoyable hour. And used it to design my own "vintage-style" custom guitar made by luthier Jim Worland. All the great makers are here, as well as a number of obscure ones (nearly 150 in all). Contains literally hundreds of beautiful photos, showing numerous models from the late 1800s right up to the present day, plus photos of famous artists who played them. Interesting short history of each maker, including little known facts. Just a great reference work. Dave Hunter and his staff of 10 "contributing editors" have done a fabulous job here. There is only one problem with buying this book -- it'll make you want to buy more guitars!

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice reference
I am just getting into guitar playing, along with a couple members of my family.I got this as a source of info and education.I didn't like the flow of the text or the info as much as I hoped. It was just not that interesting. Maybe my problem. The pictures are good and offer a glimpse into many styles and models.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift for any guitar lover
I got the large hardback version of this from my daughter for Father's Day and every spare minute since I've been pouring through it.The images of the guitars, the artists who play them, and the marketing ads, coupled with the intriguing company histories make this a must for any guitar lover.Reading those stories made me wish I had completed the guitar I had started in highschool, using the same guide to guitar-making mentioned as the inspiration for many of the luthiers written about.

Acoustic Guitars: The Illustrated Encyclopedia will be sitting on my coffee-table for years to come.

Product Description
Acoustics as a branch of physics involves heavymathematics, and the practice of architectural acoustics involvesknowledge of a broad range of subjects. For these reasons, many peoplebelieve that good acoustics are almost impossible to obtain and existonly in concert halls. With a solid understanding of the basics, however, rooms with good acoustics are not as hard to design and buildas people might think.

This work describes acoustics and the factors to be considered inconstructing a room or building with good sound quality. Among thetopics covered are intonation, tuning and temperaments of classicalmusic, environmental noise, noise and vibration control, soundmeasurement, sound systems, acoustic models, and acoustical design forvarious settings and purposes, including acoustics for chamber music, synagogues, churches, and classrooms.

The work looks at places like Clemens Theatre, Congress Hall, BinnsRehearsal Room, and Philharmonic Hall, to name just a few, as modelsof small and large buildings with excellent acoustics. Many diagramsand other illustrations enhance the text. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars a chatty exposition, for clients of acoustic consultants
If you are an acoustic consultant or designer, buy this pleasant little monograph (147 pp.) to give to your commercial clients. But if you really want to learn about the design of halls, you probably want Beranek's "Concert Halls and Opera Houses" instead. If you want graphs, formulas, and construction ideas for recording and listening rooms, spend the same amount of money (amazon net prices) and get "Master Handbook of Acoustics" (615 pp.) instead.

This book adds precious little to the available literature on acoustics or concert hall design. The first 60 pp. is the "technical" portion, which is pretty basic. The remainder is principally anecdotes of successes and failures in the field, which repeats itself, like a series of articles pasted together.A few scenarios are presented which culminate in "rules of thumb," but sometimes no conclusion is given -- maddening to a technician, but of less import to a client. One other possible target audience: If you were hoping they published a "For Dummies"-series book on acoustics, this would be an easy read, only not as organized or thorough as that series.

I would have given it fewer stars, but it has a short bibliography of REAL acoustics books. So I read it thru, and I didn't hate it, but my copy is now up for sale...

2-0 out of 5 stars An architect looking for practical information...
With prudent editing, this rambling, discourse of music and architectural aesthetic psuedo-philosophy could be reduced to a thick pamphlet about architectural acoustics.

4-0 out of 5 stars ignore rating, just replying to another review
The babysnatcher, this goes to you.The reason it says nothing about the accoustics of rock'n'roll is because accoustics are of little interest to most rock'n'roll musicians/fans because they have a little thing called the amplifier.Classical music, when performed properly, is never amplified.Excluding some modern music, it is all created by accuoustic instrumetns. That is why this book was not directed towards you.

2-0 out of 5 stars A garden of Sound
This book does a wonderful job of explaining the principles behind sound waves. The launguage is easy to understand, and the pages not darkened by excessive mathmatics. If you are looking for the best classical music acoustic design book out there, you have found it.

However. C. Brooks seems to beilieve that the only people that care about acoustics are classical music fanatics. From the offset he talks about his love for clasical music and hearing a single note fade away to silence. I didn't buy the book for classical music, I bought it to enhance my rock and roll experince. The book is centered towards classical music and the acoustics there in, but I did glean a few gems from the pages, allowing me to better the acoustics in my room, but those were few and far between.

Classical music fans, rejoice!Rock and roll fans, keep your hands away. I'm sure there's a book for you somewhere out there.

3-0 out of 5 stars Actual Workout is Brief
I felt compelled to write a review even though I just received the book when I saw it was 108 pages of Computer 101 and only 26 pages of the actual workout, 18% of the entire book!!

This book should have been titled Guitar 101 with A Few Exercises.

5-0 out of 5 stars All Good Stuff, Not Just Fluff
I just wanted to add my voice as an enthusiastic thumbs up for this book. I've been playing for 25 years. I own only about 10 woodshed/workbook-type books for guitar, and this is the one that I (1) use everytime I practice, and (2) found has a continuum of easy to darn-near-impossible techniques to work on. Mead writes with the simplicity and to-the-point clarity of a career guitar instructor. Where other books seem either too easy or devoid of stuff I can learn/work on (the books I thumbed through and never bought - heh), of the few I've purchased because they really contained quality stuff, this is the best of my ten. Why? The 10-minute exercises (5 a day, 2 minutes each - in graduating chapters according to difficulty) stretch you in ways you'd never thought of - and work both left-hand, right-hand, scales, rythym ... a complete little growth course. The additional information in the readable chapters is great (some I knew and some I didn't), and the CD's examples are illustrative - burn them to mp3 and use them in your iPod as you play through the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great workout, highly substantive book
This book has such great advice for a beginning guitarist.I am new to guitar playing - well, I tried to learn 10 years ago and never got beyond the basic A/C/G chord shapes.Below are some of the gems I've discovered in this book:

1.Deal with fingering difficulties immediately, rather than ignoring them and hoping they'll get better as time goes by.

2.Practice my barre without chord shapes, once the barre is strong, then I can add the shapes.I can't tell you how discouraged I was by barre chords, and I think breaking them down like this would have helped me tremendously 10 years ago.

3.Exactly where my left fingers should be touching the strings - close to the frets, on the tips, not fleshy pads.

4.Break down songs into 4 bar segments, rather than try to plow through the whole thing at once, and be prepared to spend a long time learning a song.

5.How to set up an effective practice routine.

I guess these are pretty basic things a good guitar teacher would have taught me, but I had 3 guitar teachers (briefly, but still) in the late 1980s and still managed to miss these insights.

The book also has lots of information about chord arrangements and scales, and the importance of training your ear to recognize major &minor chords and the intervals that make up the major scale.

But my favorite part is the actual workout, which consists of 5 charts. Each chart has 5 exercises (warm-up, arpeggio, scale, chromatic exercise, harmonized scale) with 12 different levels.I am just a D+ on Chart 1, and I can already see the difference. There is a CD that contains the workouts, played at a slow tempo and a regular tempo.

Actually, I take that back.I think my favorite part about this book is how the author really addresses concerns and thoughts a beginning guitarist (like me!) has.He clearly has a lot of experience teaching, and it really shows.

I'm just not sure why this book is billed as a "fast track" to learning acoustic guitar, unless it is because most other tracks are filled with inefficiencies and bad habits that could hinder a budding guitarist. There is no shortcut to actually practicing your guitar, alot!I don't think you can just do this workout and expect yourself to learn to play guitar - you'll need to work on songs and practice every day.Well anyway, that's a small quibble, I paid full price for this book at my book store and it was well worth it. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
If this book was $5.00, then maybe. Most of the book is just fluff that isn't about playing the guitar.

5-0 out of 5 stars Know a few chords? A great book for putting them to use
If you're getting tired of strumming your same old C, F, G, A ... trying to pick out songs, stuck in a rut, then this is a great big step in your acoustic guitar playing.

This isn't a big "how to" book, nor does it have any complete songs or big music theory. But it's so funny and relaxing, you'll have no problem learning a bunch of fun stuff. One short page per example. Like where to put your fingers to sound like you know more than you do, and the author's always hilarious examples of things to play when testing out a guitar at the shop to make people turn around and think you really know what you're doing. Seems to work! Funny thing is, you actually do learn a lot of stuff. Some of the changes and patterns in here I played and then said, "Wow -- that sounded really cool." You'd be all the way to Book III, Chapter 9 or wherever in most books before they thought you were ready for it. But you're just "faking," remember?

If you're an "upper beginner" or intermediate guitar player, this little book has a lot for you. Way more fun than nearly all "how to" books.

Well organized, funny drawings, great stuff. A keeper. ... Read more
