Extractions: Until now, we have no proof of settlement in Santinho beach. The nearest site is in the north, crossing the dunes, in Ingleses beach. Those sites have not been deeply investigated, but I can argue, through a surface collection and ceramic analysis, the existence of the Itararé and of the Guarani cultures. The site is not well preserved, and remains of sambaqui show the possibility of a hunters-gatherers preceramic occupation. It's very strange that we have no vestige of rock art in Ingleses beach, even with favorable conditions such as the abundance of the diabase rock. However, we have a great number of lithic stations (sharp and polished implements), perhaps the biggest site of lithic stations in S.ta Catarina Island. Making a typologic analysis of the petroglyphs in Santinho Beach, the predominant type is represented by the circles, showing a variation of 8 subtypes and totalizing 20 elements; the most frequent subtypes are the series of filled triangles (silhueta), and between them the double parallel series (repeated 6 times, totalizing 12 elements), which is a theme commonly repeated regionally in the painted decorations of the Guarani ceramic, in the interior of the S.ta Catarina State. Locally we have a corrugate style.

Most were created between 1300 and 1650, but some may be 3,000 years old. The priceless relics tell the story of these ancient peoples, and the collection is so irreplaceable that in 1990 the federal government created the 11-square-mile Petroglyph National Monument. A planned six-lane freeway would cut through Petroglyph National Monument to connect Albuquerque with 18,000 homes proposed on Black Ranch. (ABCNEWS.com)

Extractions: Introduction On August 8, 1998 a group of 9 people led by several very experienced cavers from the Minnesota Speleological Survey (MSS) re-explored parts of Kruger Cave to look for petroglyphs which were described by Theodore H. Lewis in a letter written in the late 1880's . Dave Gerboth, who extensively surveyed and mapped the cave in 1982, was there and led the group through many of the tunnels. Kruger Cave is a very complex maze cave with tight crawl spaces and visitors can easily become lost even with a map. We came across a recently deceased racoon just inside the entrance to the cave. Some modern graffitti was found in one room but so far no Native American petroglyphs have been located. Only a small part of the cave can be covered in one trip, however, and there are plans to return to the cave again this summer to continue the search. Kruger Cave has never been fully explored.

Royo A Well-Kept Secret For years I've been hearing vague rumors about the mysterious Petroglyphs of the Cosos a series of remote desert canyons brimming with ancient Native American rock art hidden from the public on a U.S. military base. Last year, my friend Dr. Anderson, an historian who was preparing a monograph on the subject, finally divulged their location to me. The material he sent me indicated that the largest concentration of petroglyphs in the western hemisphere was displayed in the canyons of the Coso Mountains, which are located in a remote region between the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Death Valley, where the Mojave and Great Basin deserts meet. The Cosos lie within the confines of China Lake Naval Weapons Center (NWC), the U.S. Navy's largest research and development facility. It encompasses about 1,200 square miles of dry lake beds, desert mountains and volcanic lava flows in southeastern California. The northern half of this base is the primary target area for missile weapons testing. It is littered with ordnance debris from more than half a century of such tests. It is also permeated with more than 100,000 drawings, pecked into the basalt cliffs and canyon walls during the past 10,000 years. Many of these drawings depict ancient man hunting Bighorn Sheep with the weapons appropriate to his time the Atlatl (spear thrower) and the bow and arrow. Since establishment of the NAWS base in 1943, public access to the region has been cut off. The canyons (and therefore the petroglyphs) have remained well protected since then. In 1964, two of the canyons were designated a national historic landmark, and the Navy eased restrictions to allow for limited visitation of the sites.

Thiessen National Park Service The "Three Maidens" Pipestone National Monument, bordering the town of Pipestone in southwestern Minnesota, preserves and interprets the historic catlinite quarries which, for hundreds of years, served as the source of a soft red claystone that Native Americans carved into pipes and other objects. These famous quarries have often been described in travelers' accounts since 1832, when they were first known to have been visited by non-Native Americans (Prescott 1852; Parker 1966). Almost as famous as the quarries are the petroglyphs carved into Sioux Quartzite outcrops near the quarry pits. Many of these petroglyphs were observed, commented on, and recorded at various times during the nineteenth century by visitors drawn to the nearby quarries. A large number originally were carved into the quartzite bedrock that underlies a glacially deposited group of large granite boulders called the Three Maidens. At two other locations within the Monument, Native American petroglyphs have been recorded within the past decade. Extractions: I'm trying to install Bundle::XML on my Mac OS X machine. That's a Perl module, by the way. Turns out there's some tricky stuff to it. First, Mac OS X doesn't have expat installed. That is, the expat libraries in /usr/local/include (or wherever they may go) that stuff links to when building. XML::Parser.pm, which is something Bundle::XML needs, depends on expat. But expat itself doesn't build correctly out of the box on Mac OS X because it wants to build as a static library and Apple discourages static libraries on Mac OS X. And even when you get expat built, there's tricky stuff with XML::Parser.pm on OS X as well. David Wheeler explains the tricks and thanks to him I got everthing built. Well, I think I did. I haven't actually tested it yet.

Extractions: Lucerne Valley / Barstow Area Situated in the Mojave Desert about 30 miles north-east of Lucerne Valley lies a historic wash where Indians once came to leave us reminders of the past. These "rock art" engravings were put here by Native Americans over the past 12,000 years using stone tools. Some believe the rock art was left by the Cahuilla or the Chemehuevi Indian Tribes. We may never know for sure. Over the years the petroglyphs site has been visited by hundreds of people. The BLM is keeping the access roads open, marked and available but the exact location is still somewhat unadvertised to help keep the destructive weekend warriors away. There is unfortunately a part of society that is not content with viewing and observing the beauty and history surrounding us.
