Extractions: Thousands of petroglyphs (rock carvings) can be found on Easter Island. Many represent animals, notably birds or anthropomorphic birdmen. After the demise of the statue building, in the last days before the invasion by Peruvian slave traders, there arose a cult of the Birdman (Tangata Manu). The birdman was seen as the representative on earth of the creator god Makemake, and eventually, this cult surpassed the traditional power of the king ( ariki Once a year, representatives from each clan would gather at the ceremonial village of Orongo , and swim to Motu Nui, a nearby Islet to search for the egg of the Sooty Tern. On his return, the competitor presented the egg to his representative who was then invested with the title of Tangata Manu . He then went down to Mataveri and from there was led in procession to the southwest exterior slope of Rano Raraku, where he remained in seclusion for a year. The Birdman ritual was still in existence when Europeans arrived on Easter Island - therefore historically documented. It was also featured quite prominently in

The staircase was damaged by severe wind storms this year. A road leading to the top of the petrogylphs has been developed so that the petroglyphs are still accessable. Extractions: Since it is hard to see the detail of the carving on the rock on the left over the internet we have outlined the petroglyphs on the right to reveal an apparent hunting scene with 13 men (women did not hunt), a dog, a horse, and the object of the hunt which we are guessing is a cow or exaggerated pig. There are many petroglyphs showing men, women, and children in a variety of poses and doing a variety of actions like surfing, hunting, and fishing. Some of the bodies are drawn with a thick triangular torso and others are very slender sticks. Carvings showing a closed triangular body usually represent a man. A penis is often drawn on the petroglyphs depicting a man. A woman petroglyph is usually drawn with an triangular body with the point near the legs NOT connecting. The open triangular body represents the womb. Breasts are also often drawn on petroglyphs depicting a woman. The below petroglyph shows a hunting scene with a man, dog, and Axis deer. Dogs were brought to the Hawaiian Islands by the first Polynesians. Eight Axis deer were brought to Lanai from India in the mid 1800's. Today there are over 8,000 Axis deer on Lanai that are descendents of the original eight. Axis deer are still hunted on Lanai today.

Petroglyphs date back thousands of years and are found all over the world. They were used by early man to record events, visions and story telling. They were produced using crude tools such as sticks, rocks or bone. Such pictures convey ideas or meaning to the mind without the use of words, sounds or other language form. This primitive method of communication is known as pictography (picture-writing) and it formed the basis of the Chinese and Japanese characters used today. Indians found North of the Rio Grande had no written language. They managed to keep alive traditions and tell stories by passing them down by word of mouth. Picture writing (petroglyphs and pictographs) were helpful in aiding memory and communicating ideas from one generation to the next. Often accompanying petroglyphs are ancient artifacts that belonged to people from ancient cultures. Ancient cultures around the world made these recordings in stones as stone seemed to create a permanent record of their timeline.

FROM: Advances in Archaeological Method and Theory,Vol 8. above is a Basketmaker anthropomorph overlayed with a Kayenta (Wunuqa) Style "Shield Image" (Similar to those found in the Tsegi Canyon region). Even with the long period of time separating these two painting applications (and plenty of nearby unused rock space available) it is thought that the need for the later folks to participate in the "power" of this landscape feature was significant. Locally this Rock Painting is termed the "Baseball Man". There's a wonderful "eerie" feeling brought about by the "Shield Image" fading over time and exposing more of the Basketmaker image. Note the clay handprints running above this painting. They are thought to be "supplicant" in nature and lend credence to the significance or "power" of this Site. Extractions: The Petroglyphs of the San Rafael Swell are incredible. They are very well preserved, perhaps in part to the remoteness of the area. Nobody knows the meanings behind these petroglyphs. Any theories? Are these space travelers? Are these pictures of their Gods? Your guess is as good as mine! The Anasazi Indians lived all over the 4 corners region for 1000's of years. Then suddenly, about 800 years ago they moved away, they left their belongings, and stores of food, and vanished. Theories as to why range from a severe drought that has been documented by tree ring dating, to having a hostile tribe that they could not defeat move into the area. My personal feeling is that the drought must have driven them off. Take a look at my Hovenweep page, to see how well protected they built their homes. That is of course just my opinion. No one really knows for sure. Petroglyphs are pictures that are chiseled into the rocks, Pictographs are pictures that are painted onto the rocks. The Anasazi, did both. There are petroglyph and pictograph panels all over this area. They also use pictographs to decorate their homes. It is not unusual to find white hand prints decorating the walls of the Anasazi ruins. Is this for decorations sake only? Or did some ancient Mom put her childs hand prints on the wall to record their babies growth, just as modern Mom's have little hash marks on their walls? Or could they be of a Spiritual Nature? I am looking for a picture for here of hand prints so if any has one they'd like to share.....I have now found some pictures of

This world is alive with the sights and sounds of the high desert - a hawk spirals down from the mesa top, a roadrunner scurries into fragrant sage, a desert millipede traces waves in the sand. There is another presence beyond what we can see or hear. People who have lived along the Rio Grande for many centuries come alive again through images they carved on the shiny black rocks. These images, and associated archeological sites in the Albuquerque area, provide glimpses into a 12,000 year long story of human life in this area. Petroglyph National Monument stretches 17 miles along Albuquerque's West Mesa, a volcanic basalt escarpment that dominates the citys western horizon. Authorized June 27, 1990, the 7,236 acre monument is cooperatively managed by the National Park Service and the City of Albuquerque. Petroglyph National Monument protects a variety of cultural and natural resources including five volcanic cones, hundreds of archeological sites and an estimated 25,000 images carved by native peoples and early Spanish settlers. Many of the images are recognizable as animals, people, brands and crosses; others are more complex. Their meaning, possibly, understood only by the carver. These images are inseparable from the greater cultural landscape, from the spirits of the people who created them, and all who appreciate them.
