GEO_CHAPTER_7.HTML karst LANDFORMS AND LAKES Robert W. Blair, Jr.* karst topography in the Slovenian Dinaric Mountains of Yugoslivia. The map, taken from an article by Demek et al. in geomorphology http://daac.gsfc.nasa.gov/DAAC_DOCS/geomorphology/GEO_7/GEO_CHAPTER_7.HTML
Extractions: KARST LANDFORMS AND LAKES Introduction The term "karst" stems from the region Krs in Slovenia, now in northwestern Yugoslavia, which is typified by stony barren rock (Figure 7.l) . The Indo- European word "kar" for rock and the Italian word "carso" evolved to the Germanized term"karst," which is now the accepted term for solution-derived landscapes like those just north and east of the Adriatic Sea.Karstification is the geologic process of differential chemical and mechanical erosion by water on soluble bodies of rock, such as limestone, dolomite, gypsum, or salt, at or near the Earth´s surface. Karstification is exhibited best on thick, fractured, and pure limestones in a humid environment in which the subsurface and surface are being modified simultaneously. The resulting karst morphology is usually characterized by dolines (sinkholes), hums (towers), caves, and a complex subsurface drainage system. Factors in Karst Development The development of karst terrain depends on the interplay of at least seven important factors in varying degrees. These are: lithology, structure, relief, hydrology, climate, vegetation, and time.

Rozemarijn Tarhule-Lips BWI, Programme with abstracts for the Third International geomorphology Conference,Hamilton with some other caves), Friends of karst, Cookeville, Tennessee http://geography.ou.edu/people/tarhule-lips.html
Extractions: Dr. Tarhule-Lips is a geomorphologist who specializes in karst research, i.e. the study of features resulting from the dissolution of bedrock (e.g. limestone dolomite, gypsum). In particular, she is interested in reconstructing climate and environmental conditions during the Quaternary using a combination of Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (TIMS) and stable isotope analysis of speleothems (chemical deposits in caves). Most of her research has been based on the sub tropical Caribbean region, but she is presently exploring ways to apply similar methods to study karst in southern and western Oklahoma for paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental information.

Learn.co.za : Geography Features of Limestone Regions. Outcomes To understand the formationof features on and below the landscape in limestone regions. http://www.learn.co.za/content/grade11/Geography/geomorphology/karst/Unit1/
Extractions: Carboniferous limestone or dolomite is a rock formed many millions of years ago in an aquous environment. When the earth's atmosphere was composed mainly of carbon dioxide large lakes and seas covered parts of South Africa. In these lakes algae absorbed the carbon dioxide and over time massive layers of dolomite were formed. Today these deposits are found in areas extending from the Northern Cape ( Kuruman ) to Mpumulanga and into the Northern Province at Tschipse Limestone ( dolomite ) is a grey looking rock has many joints which allows water to infiltrate, as this takes place the rock is gradually dissolved by the acidic rainwater which carries away the material in solution . In this way a series of underground passageways and caverns develop. If the water table drops owing to downcutting of the drainage system then a new series of caves will develop.

It covers about 350km2, including 15.7km2 of first level protection area, 28.14 km2 of second level protection area and 306.1km2 of third level protection area (Fig.1). Shili Scenic Area is between Mt. Jiupanshan and Mt. Dafoshan at eastern Yunnan of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, geographically in the second step of the macroscopic Chinese topographic ladder, 1700-1950m a.s.l.. Mt. Wenbishan, the highest peak of Mt. Jiupanshan is about 2203m a.s.l.. The Big Shilin is about 1750m a.s.l., wheras the Naigu Shilin, 1820m a.s.l.. Main geomorphologic types are plateau hills, low mounts, depressions, basins, stone hillocks, stone forests, stone teeth field, lakes and river valleys. The stone forests and stone teeth are usually distributed in basins, depressions, along river valleys, or on the plateau surface (Fig.2).

Extractions: from NASA's Geomorphology from Space In this external link from NASA's Geomorphology from Space the Dinaric karst of the southern part of former Yugoslavia is described, along with the satellite image of the territory of Montenegro. The "Yugoslavia" referred in the text is the pre-war Yugoslavia. Nowadays the Dinaric Mountain region as well as the area pictured in the Landsat image are divided between several countries. Montenegro, which with Serbia forms the present Yugoslav Federation, is entirely located in the central part of the Landsat image. view the PLATE KL-5
