    Extractions: No one knows for sure exactly what goes into the making of a hurricane. Below are some basic ingredients. We use size above to illustrate what influences the creation and growth of a hurricane. But in real life size isn't necessarily linked to a hurricane's ferocity. Water must be at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Storms can grow rapidly in size and strength when the water temperatures are higher than this. Strong high-altitude winds, acting like an exhaust system, are needed to push rising hot air away from the storm. However, forceful shearing winds, moving at different speeds and directions at different heights, can disrupt a hurricane's formation or rip apart an existing one. Significant differences in air pressure over distance called a pressure gradient drive the hurricane's growth as air rushes toward the low-pressure center of the storm. The steeper the gradient, the faster the wind blows. Warm and moist air carries evaporated water from the ocean upward into the sky, like an escalator. As the moist air rises and cools, it condenses into rain and releases heat in the process, causing more air to rise and fueling the growth of the storm.
