Many are involved in cancer and other human diseases and will help the search for new medical treatments. The mouse data have been produced by a number of US and UK institutions, funded by the National Institutes of Health in America and the Wellcome Trust in Britain. A private US company has already read the mouse genome but its research is not freely available to scientists - they must pay for access. In contrast, the work done by the international consortium has been posted on the net and is available to all.

Extractions: Michael W. Young The Starr Center for Human Genetics applies emerging technologies in human genetics to search for genes that are causal in the genesis of human disease. These efforts will integrate genetic and clinical research at the university and enhance studies in human biology. The application of new technologies stemming from the Human Genome Project is anticipated to revolutionize our understanding of basic principles of human biology and disease. Indeed, the combination of advances in molecular genetics and the implementation of strategies of sufficient scale make it possible to identify human disease genes for complex disorders. Genetic information can also be used to stratify genetically complex diseases with respect to clinical features, disease outcome and therapeutic response. The large, ethnically diverse population available in New York City provides an opportunity for comprehensive genetic analysis of human disease, especially as preliminary efforts elsewhere have been skewed toward the analysis of families of western European descent. Thus, the program in human genetics should occupy a critical niche in future genetic research. Current studies focus on obesity, hearing loss, type II diabetes, mental illness and heart disease. Additional genetic studies are carried out in collaboration with the Department of Health on the island of Kosrae. Kosrae is a Pacific island, and aspects of its history make it a potentially valuable site for analyzing the genetic basis of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Extractions: Forensic Laboratory for DNA Research Department of Human Genetics, Leiden University last modified Jan 17, 2001 In 1994, the Leiden University was requested by the Ministry of Justice to set up an independent second opinion laboratory (or contra-expertise laboratory) for forensic DNA studies. In the same year the Dutch legal system was extended with a new law, by means of which suspects of severe criminal offends could be forced to cooperate in a DNA test. However, the same law also preserved them the possibility to request an independent contra expertise at a laboratory different than the laboratory of Criminal Justice. This new DNA lab should meet high quality standards and the law restricts the type of experiments to those for which accreditation by the Dutch Council for Accreditation (RvA) was obtained. Within the Department of Human Genetics of the Medical Faculty of the Leiden University, a new DNA laboratory, the Forensic Laboratory for DNA Research (FLDO), was started. The management of this forensic laboratory was placed in the hands of dr. E. Bakker, also head of the Department of Clinical DNA-diagnostics. A molecular geneticist, two technicians, a part-time secretary and a part-time quality manager were employed. Equipment was bought, space rented and the first test cases were performed.

The Edinburgh Mouse Atlas Project
The UK MRC human genetics Unit in Edinburgh is developing a digital atlas of mouse development and database to be a resource for spatially mapped data such as in situ gene expression and cell lineage. The project is in collaboration with the Department of Anatomy, University of Edinburgh. The gene expression database is being developed as part of the Mouse Gene Expression Information Resource (MGEIR) in collaboration with the Jackson Laboratory, USA.

Most of the research activity currently underway in the lab focuses on exploring possible associations between genes and commonly occurring neurological and sensorineural disorders. We are trying to understand as to how once mutated, these genes lead to a disorder. We use principles and technologies of human genetics combined with genomics and genome sequence-based knowledge to carry out these studies. This work is built up on a dynamic interface between clinical and basic biological research. It is being conducted in collaboration with various medical institutions in the country.
