Extractions: Sloan Research Fellowship Non-technical description The field I work in is String Theory, a scientific theory which posits that the fundamental building blocks of matter and forces in nature are tiny vibrating strings. As yet, strings haven't been seen experimentally, but we are hard at work figuring out how we could detect them directly or indirectly - either by using giant particle accelerators or by studying the fine details of the cosmic microwave background radiation left over from the big bang.
