Extractions: on an inland traverse Antarctica's ice sheet and its surrounding sea ice are integral to the global climate system. They influence surface energy and moisture fluxes, clouds, precipitation, and atmospheric and oceanic circulation. The ice sheet holds an archive of environmental data, including temperature, that allows present day conditions to be compared with those of the past. It also holds proxy data on climatic forcing factors such as variations in earth's orbit, solar variability, greenhouse gas levels and volcanic activity. My supervisors are Dr. Martin Sharp (a glaciologist) and Dr. Andrew Bush (a meteorologist/physical oceanographer/physicist). I am developing a coupled atmosphere - ice sheet model in an attempt to determine the importance of ice-atmosphere feedbacks in the evolution of an ice sheet. Ice sheets affect atmospheric precipitation patterns by changing the topography of a continent, and also by displacing the primary baroclinic zones or atmospheric jet streams (and storm tracks). This in turn affects the primary accumulation zones and flow patterns of the ice sheet. In order to develop a fully coupled hemispheric atmosphere-ice model, I have chosen to initially work on a regional scale system. John Evans Glacier (79.67N,74.5W) is located on the central east coast of Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada. Ice data for this glacier and local meteorological data are being used in the development and verification of the model.

Extractions: The Commission was established in 1962 in order to investigate the link between climate and the behaviour of glaciers. This interdisciplinary endeavour applies methods taken from meteorology, climatology, geodesy, cartography and hydrology. Research is focused on the Vernagtferner in the Ötztal Alps, Austria, where the annual glacier mass balance is determined along with the climatological conditions and discharge. Parallel to this long-term monitoring, which includes frequent geodetic surveys, the Commission is engaged in concentrated process studies to determine the energy balance over snow and ice as well as runoff formation in high alpine regions under the current conditions of drastic glacier retreat. This research project is supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) and other research institutions; the results are primarily of interest in water resource management. Apart from research on alpine glaciers, the Commission undertakes comparative studies in the Nepalese Himalayas and Central Asia. These include the re-mapping of selected glaciers, which makes it possible to determine long-term changes in glaciation in those areas for which earlier expeditions have produced exact historical maps. Glaciological research also continues in the Antarctic, in cooperation with the GSF Institut für Hydrologie (Institute for Hydrology), Munich, and the Alfred-Wegener-Institut für Polar- und Meeresforschung (Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research), Bremerhaven.

This year the meeting will be held at the Byrd Polar Research Center, on Ohio State's west campus, on May 15-16 (Friday and Saturday), beginning at 9:00 am on Friday. The goal of MGM is to provide an informal forum for the presentation and discussion of current research. No abstracts are required and no proceedings will be published. Talks will be 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the number of participants. Researchers of all ice-related subjects are welcome. Topics may include, but are not limited to: past and present ice sheets and glaciers, snow, permafrost, glacial geology, meteorology, and climatology. Student presentations are encouraged. Extractions: Glaciology Field Course at Tarfala Research Station, Northern Sweden. March 27-April 3, 2003 The course is Part 5 of an EU EuroLab (GlacioEuroLab5) in Glaciology. As an EU programme we can offer travel and subsistence support to young professional researchers, especially to Ph.D. students but only for citizens of the EU, and associated states under Fifth Framework rules. Participation is limited to 15 for safety and accommodation reasons. The course is worth 3 ECTS credits or 2 Finnish study weeks. Tarfala Station has a unique place in the history of glaciology and has been the focus of continuous glaciology work since 1946. Storglaciaeren in the immediate vicinity has the longest continuos series of mass balance measurements in the world. Accommodation at the station is rustic but pleasant, with beds in heated huts and sleeping bags will not be needed. Morning and evening meals will be taken in the station dining room. Travel by rain and air travel to Kiruna, the nearest town about 90 km from Tarfala. Transportation by bus will be arranged to Nikkaloukta from where a 30 km trail starts to the station.

Antarctic ice thus accounts for more than 80% of all fresh water on earth. Not just the size, but the age of Antarctic ice is vital to science. Water from the sea, evaporates into clouds, the clouds move over the continent and the water falls in the form of snow. That snow is then compacted into the icesheets, which in turn move toward the coast and in the form of glaciers and eventually become iceshelves. When pieces break off the iceshelf (icebeargs) and melt the water once again returns to the sea. Hence after tens of thousands of years the cycle is complete. Glaciers / Icesheets / Iceshelves According to The Encyclopædia Britannica* a Glacier is "any large mass of perennial ice that originates on land by the recrystallization of snow or other forms of solid precipitation and that shows evidence of past or present flow.
