Electric Gene Therapy Approved A new cancer therapy that uses an electric pulse to aid in the injection of DNA into tumors is ready for use in Europe. By Kristen Philipkoski. Wired News http://www.wired.com/news/news/story/18552.html
Extractions: The controversial medical field of gene therapy has received a boost with the successful treatment of a gene disorder. Two infants, aged 8 and 11 months, received new genetic material to combat a life-threatening disease called Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (Scid). Usually, patients with Scid are forced to live in tightly-controlled, sterile "bubbles" to avoid threats to their non-existent immune systems. A bone marrow transplant is the conventional treatment for such patients. But the two treated children have shown "striking" improvements and now live normally after their novel therapy. Gene therapy trials in the US have attracted much criticism over fears that patients were being harmed by the experimental treatments. Viral infection Scid is caused when a defective copy of a gene on the X chromosome is inherited.

The ISGT 2003 will provide nine sessions with more than 65 seminars covering diverese aspects of gene therapy and molecular diagnostics i.e. chip technology and proteomics. Targeting strategies, skin gene transfer and its (pre-)clinical models, updates on vector systems and novel technologies in inhibiting viral diseases e.g. HIV, will be presented as well as immunization against infectious diseases and cancer. Controversial issues such as genetic patenting, ethics of gene replacement and safety issues will be offered for discussion. The symposium will commence with a keynote address on Thursday, 27th March at 9.00 o'clock at the Academy of Sciences (Akademie der Wissenschaften).

Gene Therapy - An Overview gene therapy An Overview. BIO. Biotechnology in Perspective. Washington,DC Biotechnology Industry Organization, 1990. Altered Genes. gene therapy. http://www.accessexcellence.org/AB/IWT/Gene_Therapy_Overview.html
Extractions: BIO. "Biotechnology in Perspective." Washington, D.C.: Biotechnology Industry Organization, 1990. Each of us carries about half a dozen defective genes. We remain blissfully unaware of this fact unless we, or one of our close relatives, are amongst the many millions who suffer from a genetic disease. About one in ten people has, or will develop at some later stage, an inherited genetic disorder, and approximately 2,800 specific conditions are known to be caused by defects (mutations) in just one of the patient's genes. Some single gene disorders are quite common - cystic fibrosis is found in one out of every 2,500 babies born in the Western World - and in total, diseases that can be traced to single gene defects account for about 5% of all admissions to children's hospitals. In the U.S. and Europe, there are exciting new programs to 'map' the entire human genome - all of our genes. This work will enable scientists and doctors to understand the genes that control all diseases to which the human race is prone, and hopefully develop new therapies to treat and predict diseases. Most of us do not suffer any harmful effects from our defective genes because we carry two copies of nearly all genes, one derived from our mother and the other from our father. The only exceptions to this rule are the genes found on the male sex chromosomes. Males have one X and one Y chromosome, the former from the mother and the latter from the father, so each cell has only one copy of the genes on these chromosomes. In the majority of cases, one normal gene is sufficient to avoid all the symptoms of disease. If the potentially harmful gene is recessive, then its normal counterpart will carry out all the tasks assigned to both. Only if we inherit from our parents two copies of the same recessive gene will a disease develop.
