Sep 23. Xenartherans or edentata {anteaters, sloths, and armadillos} 25With one exception, all of the edentata are found in the Neotropics http://www.govst.edu/science/faculty/yunger/MamNotes/mammwek6.html
Extractions: With one exception, all of the Edentata are found in the Neotropics; the exception is the nine-banded armadillo ranging into the southern U.S. Dentition ranges from simple homodont to lacking teeth. The armadillos are terrestrial to fossorial. The armadillos dermal bony scutes overlaid with epidermal scales. Armadillos are able to "roll into a ball" and/or dig rapidly into the soil so that only the scutes are exposed. Most armadillos feed primarily on insects, although a variety of other invertebrates, carrion, and plant material may also be consumed. The tree sloths are arboreal, moving about on the limbs of trees by hanging from large, curved claws. Have continuously growing, cylindrical, homodont teeth. Feed exclusively on plant material, including buds, leaves, flowers, and fruits. The pelage of the sloths can be viewed as an "ecosystem" with blue-green algae living in the hairs the primary consumers, invertebrates feeding on the algae, and insects preying on the other invertebrates. Prehistorically there were also giant ground sloths.
