Acoelomates consist of two modern phyla of worms the Platyhelminthes and Nemerteans . These animals are quite common with perhaps 20,000 species known. Some are free living. Many are parasitic. Although the acoelomates are triploblastic with three germ layers in the developmental forms, they are developmentally more primitive than the coelomate phyla. They are therefore thought to have evolved prior to the coelomates arthropods chordates , etc). They are the most primitive forms with bilateral symmetry and having a head and internal organs. They have no body cavity . Their digestive systems are primitive at best a pit with a single opening rather than a tube with a mouth and anus. In many cases, nutrients are absorbed through the skin rather than eaten and digested.

Extractions: Introduction to the acoelomates From this point on, all animals shown on the website have primary bilateral symmetry. For sessile or slow-moving forms, radial symmetry works fine but for animals that are active in seeking food, shelter, mates, etc. a new body plan is required. Bilateral symmetry (a sagittal plane passing thorough the body divides it into mirror images) coupled with cephalization (concentration of sense organs in the head region) solve these problems. The anterior (front) end moves forward and the posterior (tail) follows. The dorsal (top) side is kept facing up and the ventral (bottom) side is kept down and usually specialized for locomotion. Although there are three phyla termed acoelomates because they lack a space (body cavity) between the endoderm and ectoderm, only one will be included in the Zoo Lab website, the Phylum Platyhelminthes, which includes over 20,000 free-living and parasitic species of animals called flatworms. Note: the term "worm" has been loosely applied to a number of elongate, bilateral invertebrate animals without appendages; it is not a taxonomic term! This site was last modified July 22, 2002.

LECTURE - Chap 29 - INVERTEBRATES 1. acoelomates includes Porifera, Coelenterata, Platyhelminthes. The most primitiveinvertebrates are called acoelomates which means no body cavity. http://biology.unm.edu/biol122/chap 33 lecture.htm
Extractions: LECTURE - Chap 33 - INVERTEBRATES CAMBRIAN RADIATION Metazoans (multi-cellular animals) appeared in the fossil record as soft-bodied forms on uncertain taxonomy roughly 800 million years ago. The record remains poor until the beginning of the Cambrian Period. The beginning of the Cambrian period, about 570 million years ago , is defined by an explosive radiation of hard-bodied invertebrates. Representatives of every major extant invertebrate phylum, both protostomes and deuterostomes , occur in abundance: Porifera Coelenterata Platyhelminthes Annelids Mollusks Arthropods , and Echinoderms In addition, meticulous work over the past 20 years on the Burgess Shale has shown that many, perhaps most, of the organisms of the Cambrian Period do not fit into any extant phyla. The current view is that many potential phyla developed in the Cambrian but most of these organisms became extinct. The few types that survived radiated into the phyla we recognize today. Characteristics of Animals: 1. multicellular 2. heterotrophic (organotrophic)
