5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely a MUST read!
I enjoyed this book immensly; it was soo jam-packed with information and it was also well-written to the extent where anyone and everyone could grasp ahold of the topic and fully observe and understand it. Vivianne Crowley is an excellent Wiccan author and has a true gift when it comes to describing and detailing things. This NEEDS to have a home on your bookshelf if you're even at all interested in Wicca and Witchcraft!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Oldie but a goodie.
A very detailed book describing the intricate ways of the religion in avery plain and straight forward manner. A must have book for the seriouspractitioner!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners or those who are curious about Wicca
)0( Reviewed by Lady Rowan of the Midwest )0(

For those who are new to Wicca or who are simply just curious about it, Vivianne Crowley provides a straightforward, easy-to-read book that covers a definition of what Wiccais, how Wiccans perceive the Universe, the magickal realm, the gods, sabbatrites and a section on groups and contacts for readers who want furtherinformation.

If you're looking for a detailed, complex treatise on Wiccaand its history, this won't be the book for you. But if you're searchingfor a concise handbook that defines basic tenets and beliefs of Wicca inits purest form, then you may want to add this book to your list.

Inclear terms, Crowley describes who today's witches are, more about Wicca'sorigins and what covens are. Neophytes will find a simple diagram of apentagram with each element described along with a simple visualization toassist with contacting the elements in nature.

Crowley also gives asimple explanation of the Wheel of the Year and Wicca's eight majorfestivals, as well as the remaining four festivals. A description ofappropriate altar decorations, colors and the type of magick appropriate toeach festival is provided, as well.

In the section that covers themagickal realm, Crowley discusses what natural magic is, who does magic andhow along with instruction on how to successfully use visualization, feeletheric energy and open the chakras, or specialenergy centers in thebody.

Phases of the Goddess and how She relates to the pentagram makesfor an interesting read, as does the relationship of the God to thepentagram, too. Exercises to assist with attuning to the Goddess and theGod help readers become more familiar with their relationship to theDivine.

Finally, Crowley's chapters on creating ritual and the sabbatrites pull the book together in a smooth, informative way. For those whowish to go further and learn more, the author alsoprovides additionalresources and contact information.

Overall, Crowley's book isn't asdetailed and complex as some might want to read - but if you're justtesting the waters of Wicca and have a need for a guide that will explainthe basics in a reader-friendly way, PRINCIPLES OF WICCA will deliver aconcrete foundation upon which to build your beginning path.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great basic guide
Contrary to the disturbingly ignorant review that someone who obviously has no clue posted below, this is a good, practical book.It serves as a sound introduction to Wicca. However, Crowley always tends to assume thatall Pagans are Wiccan and that all Wiccans are British Traditional Witches, which is certainly not the case. However, the British viewpoint can alsoprove to be very interesting.Best of all are her sections on theElements. Her chakra exercise is also very effective, and her invocationsvery poetic. It's a good book, but still not "the only guide you'llever need" as the cover boasts. It's a good guide, but definitely NOTthe only.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for beginners
This is a good book for beginning Witch's.It tells you all the basics and explains the Craft. There are a few mistakes in it, but not very big ones. This book is definitely a good read for those interested in theCraft. It is a good introduction.

Product Description
What is Wicca? How is it practiced? What do Wiccans worship?

Wicca is one of the fastest-growing religious movements in the world, yet with its rise has come a torrent of misconceptions, misunderstandings, and untruths about what Wiccans do and believe. Wicca Demystified alleviates all confusion by offering a clear guide for everyone curious about this much talked-about religion—whether you are considering becoming Wiccan or a family member, friend, or colleague of someone who is Wiccan. Wiccan High Priest Bryan Lankford explains the background, beliefs, and practices of Wicca in two accessible sections—one focusing on a basic understanding and one full of answers to deeper questions. The comprehensive topics he covers include:

• Why Wiccans worship a Goddess as well as a God

• Witch stereotypes and nasty rumors about Wiccans

• Wiccan holidays and how they are celebrated

• The roles of nature and magick within the Wiccan faith

• How Wiccans view birth, death, and the meaning of life

• Ethics from a Wiccan perspective

Wicca Demystified goes beyond the simple mechanics of Wiccan worship to provide a glimpse into the heart and soul of the religion. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Tradition Specific but not bad
While it is nice to see someone attempting to write a book that is not a hand book or not a "Wicca 101" book, you have to ask... is this really an advanced study book on Wicca.

In this book you will not find spells and incantations. You will not find rituals, altar tools, calling of the quarters or anything else that most associate with handbooks and "Wicca 101" books.Yet the book calls itself a Guide.

What you will find is one man and his Traditions thoughts on what it is to truly be "Wiccan".The Tradition is the McFarland Dianic Tradition, founded in the early 70s.And I enter the caveat at this point - Your Mileage May Vary - depending on the Tradition of Wicca you practice.

The opening paragraph of chapter one "The Beginning" entitled "What is all this about anyway?" gives us this line:"The best place to start with any explanation is at the beginning, and the beginning of Wicca dates far back into antiquity."

There are those who will "hmmmm" at this point.Again, the caveat. There is more that will give you moments to pause and consider.

If you can get past all this, the book is an interesting read. But I was confused by its purpose. On the one hand, I saw an attempt to explain what Wicca is.But if I am already walking the Wiccan path then I already understand what Wicca is.I return to the subtitle:"Guide for Practitioners, Family and Friends" - and it becomes clear. While trying to work with those who are knowledgeable and appear as more than a 101 book, it still has to revert back to 101 basics to be a guide for those who do not practice.

As a guide in that respect it works. We have basic discussions on the Wheel of the Year, Rites of Passage, Can Children and Teens be Wiccanand more. There is lots of discussion on this Traditions ethics in spellwork, what the Rede means and then we move on to "pointy hats, black cats and brooms... "

It is nice that the book sidesteps the usual cookbook/crafters handbook/basic ritual 101 material. The discussion, in my opinion, has to and does fit into a 101 category. When trying to explain what Wicca is to anyone not familiar with Wicca, you still can't venture too far past the basics.

I came away with the idea that this book would be best suited to give to someone who knows a Wiccan and is interested in learning more. While we don't proselytize (see the chapter "If Wiccans think their beliefs are correct, why don't they try to convert others to their beliefs?") this book might be good to give to someone who is not sure what some of us might be all about.

I think if you find the material agreeable and in line with what you believe, then this book could be an aid to helping you explain Wicca to others. However, as this has been done before and this tradition may not be in line with your own personal beliefs, you may want to review the material before passing it along.boudica

5-0 out of 5 stars Bestbook to come out of the Broom Closet with
I have recently come out of the broom closet with my family. This is the book I chose to use to explain my spiritual practice to them. They had been reading some very bad things and were very upset. The format of the book with questions and answers was just the thing to settle their fears.I highly recommend this book.Bryan Lankford explains very clearly some of the most pressing questions non-wiccans have concerning our beliefs. It is also very good for a beginning wiccan to learn more about the faith.

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest and Enjoyable
Mr. Lankford does a wonderful job explaining what Wicca is and what Wicca is not. He understand the ins and outs of this religion and is able to clearly explain it for anyone to understand. If you are Wiccan and have family who want to know more about what you do, this is the book to get them! This author comes across as a person who knows how scary it can be for someone to hear that a loved one is Wiccan or a Witch. He does a fantastic job of helping them through that fear by providing them with the information for a better understanding of something they've only heard scary stories about. Ignorance breeds fear and this book will definitely put an end to anyone's ignorance about Wicca/Witchcraft!

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning the truth about Wicca sets you, family AND friends free
This book eschews commercialized versions of Wicca to deliver frank and truthful information to the audiences needing it the most. It is useful for individuals who are investigating Wicca as a religion, but it is especially helpful for the potentially confused (and scared) friends and family.

An avalanche of stereotypes and misinformation in this society about what Wicca is and who Wiccans are subsequently leaves the friends and families of the practitioners in a bind. They might want to be supportive, but those family members and friends do not necessarily know where to turn for affirming information. Despite Wicca being recognized as a religion (by institutions such as the United States military!) accurate information about Wicca remains to find.

The tone of this book is open-minded, Lankford is able to empathize with his readers own path. He is an advanced witch but does not forget that potential readers and readers are entering with a dearth of information about this religion. Pulling rank on them would have been easy but he is instead empathetic to their own journey towards acceptance of friends, family, and themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
I found this book very helpful for explaining an often misunderstood religion. If you prefer to get the real story rather than succumbing to commercial imagery when forming your opinions, this is a great source. Similarly, if you seek a clear and articulate way to express your own similar views, this book will empower you with a roadmap for doing so. If you fear for someone who seems to have gone astray and want to get the facts from a credible source, this is a must read. Well written and free of drama sometimes included to sell more books! Very refreshing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Toil and Trouble
Unfortunately having had more experience with the so-called "wiccans" than one could possibly ever want, this book is mostly old hat but would, one imagine, be useful to those who have not. Certainly parents should do everything in their power to protect their children from getting trapped in this stuff but it is extremely difficult since teens are notoriously self absorbed and are attracted to anything to gives them affirmation for being so. Basically witchcraft should be treated like a drug addiction or drinking. While you are underage and living in my house, you will not engage in such practices. When you are an adult and have moved out, have at it Broomhilda. Either they will mature and become responsible adults or they will spend their lives filled with hate and bitterness because Mommy and Daddy did not buy them the latest Britney Spears CD. This book is informative and invaluable for the concerned parent trying to do their best but good luck. This stuff is an addictive poison and it is very hard to save someone from the pit if that is where they want to go....if only to be cool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and solid
There are so many reviews on this book that give it low marks, but most are written by people who should dislike this book. I read the book twice and it is a very good book not onliy in unbiased research but biblically. I reccomend this book to anyone that deals with teens and new Christians.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a mess
All I can say is that I feel bad for anyone who seriously believes these lies. This book...I am almost speechless. Terrible.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate and with a blatant agenda
I picked this up in a bookshop yesterday out of curiosity and flicked through it for some time. I can't comment on it in detail as, to be fair, I did not read it all - for good reason.

Three key inaccuracies leaped out at me. Firstly, Russo claims that Wicca is a centuries-old religion, when this is patently not true. Although it is true that, as a pagan religion, it is grounded in certain beliefs and practices that pre-date most of the major world religions, Wicca itself dates from the middle of the 20th century. A simple Google search would have provided the author with this information.

Secondly, Wicca is not the same as witchcraft. Wiccans often practise the craft, but this is not a pre-requisite and it is as absurd to suggest that they are one and the same as it is to suggest that all Christians sing hymns or take Holy Communion.

Thirdly, Wicca is not about 'power over others'. One of the central tenets of Wicca is that you must not interfere with the free will of others. Spells (and here, again, we are talking about witchcraft and not Wicca) that claim to make someone specific fall in love with you/give you a job/behave in a certain way are just not performed by anyone who seriously believes in and lives their life according to Wiccan principles.

Russo has written a book that, even from a cursory flicking through, comes across as a fire and brimstone dire warning to non-Christians that has little basis in any 'facts' about the religion it claims to inform people about. The hidden agenda seemed to me to be less about telling people about Wicca and more about recruiting scared teenagers into the church.

If you want to know about Wicca, don't bother with this book. There are a lot of very sound, unbiased books out there that will give you a much clearer picture without trying to recruit you or scare you about the dangers of other religions.

1-0 out of 5 stars TRUTH lies within - not in a book!
Maybe Mr Russo actually DID do some research.HOWEVER, when doing any research with a completely closed mind and only to the service of those on "your side" when it comes to religion, this is just garbage. What is sacred and beautiful in wicca, Mr Russo has twisted it to conform to HIS and most of the mainstream/conservative beliefs. Christianity is supposed to be based on love, is it not? Isn't that the "Great Commission"?Then why do these people use fear and control, then call it love??? People should be able to chose their own path to God/Goddess/Great Spirit/Etc.TRUTH lies within, not in a book!

9/18/07 - Also wanted to add.... If ANYONE is concerned about Wicca, PLEASE do your own research and don't take just anyone's word for it (Wiccan's or Non-Wiccan's).Read in books or information on the internet about Wicca. Then you decide. And what makes a person evil? Religion? If that were the case, then I would guess over 90% of the world's population would be evil. Just think about it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for use in Apologetics
Although this book is easy reading, and gives much background about the origin of wicca, it does not put forth strong enough logical arguments to convince those in the pagan-like sects that their very souls are in mortal danger. We need a theological book refuting paganism (modern wicca and the like) and this is not it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Libel full of disinformation, tantamount to hate speech
Wiccans and other practitioners of paganism (as well as anyone who truly respects religious freedom or critical thinking for that matter) should file a class action lawsuit against the author and the publisher of this book and books like it. Witchcraft is far less dangerous than Christianity and the only warning young people need against it is that it might make them *think* about their own spirituality and will make them rather unpopular with ignorant, insecure, and bigoted yokels.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not accurate in the least!
The author did almost NO research into Wicca or Witchcraft.Almost every page of his opinionated theories contradicts itself - from one sentence to the next.My elementary aged son could write a more informative book than this. And to claim Satanism as the oldest religion? That is laughable. His claims of proof and evidence are only biblical quotes which cannot be supported with any real evidence.I would suggest this self-proclaimed author to find another line of work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dear Tim Baker, get your facts straight.
Once again, another book has arrived in the market to show the "dangers of Witchcraft" without factual information to support their claims. _Dewitched_ is a prime example of this. Instead of doing any real search about how Wicca is NOT any form of "devil worship" (Witches do not even believe in 'the devil' or 'satan'!), Baker sticks to his Christian-dogmatic viewpoints to skew the truth and once again, add to the hatred and misunderstandings directed at Witches today in the world. Shame on you, Tim Baker.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ignorance breeds hatred
For the record and miscommunication by the christian ignorant. Satan is not a part of Wiccan beliefs. Satan and his legends are christian mythology. Please try to be correct in what you say about others.

After 800 years, one would think you would think of a new line. Ratherthan repeat the misbelief and phobias of a long dead Pope. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!
I would like to start off by saying I have not just read this book..I have been practicing the meditations daily. I am blown away at how they work! For me, the visions I've been getting are astounding! I've also been very accurately predicting things and can't wait to see what else will happen. Hope this dude writes more books!

4-0 out of 5 stars Recommend it!
While I'm here, just need to say that the information in this book is so incredibly useful to ANYONE. The graphics are not the prettiest, but if you're only interested in pretty pictures, you would probably be better off reading a comic book. If you want to learn how to REALLY create positive changes for yourself, then read this!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Kind of Cheesy
I can not believe of all the glowing reviews that no one has mentioned that this book looks like a 3rd grader published it using their dot matrix printer from the 80's with pictures you can't see/read because they are all garbled vector images. The font is so small I got a headache. Next time, if your going to get a book published, you should probably review the layout first and get an editor, even if it is just a friend. I wouldn't be a Wicca worth my salt if I didn't at least thank the author for his time and the information provided. If your looking for a clear and concise guide whether you are new or old to the Craft, this book is not for you. It often starts a topic and does not finish leaving you kind of hanging and not in a good "I should meditate about this further" way. Get thee to Scott Cunningham's work ASAP. Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner is a beautifully written and thoughtful approach to get you on the path.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Powerful
What a beautifully written book this is! Offering readers a chance to explore the world of the astral plane for themselves, because seeing is believing. Taking a look into the world of the Occult, Esoterics, and Metaphysics, and showing the reader how to connect with the Divine within themselves, and discover their own inner power. I am highly impressed with this author's work, and cannot believe this book hasn't been picked up by a larger publisher. It shines in a world full of trendy and useless nonsense.

5-0 out of 5 stars This IS the book for newcomers!
I read this one cover to cover, and I was amazed at what I saw. This book covers the spiritual aspects of Wicca, a beautiful explanation of the Rede, and introduces readers to esoterics and the occult with the explanations of the energy bodies of the aura, and the seven chakras. Some may argue that the chakras fall more under Eastern beliefs than Wicca, but I absolutely love it. There's also instructions for making tinctures, and meditations designed specifically to open psychic awareness. I hope he does many, many more books!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best gift for a newbie!
This is one of those books that has a definite audience. Whiel most of the information in it will be familiar to the majority of people reading this review, there are people for whom it is perfect. Those people are the ones who may or may not be new to paganism, but who are relatively new to the Internet.

The general overview of the book is that it's Wicca 101 + Internet 101 - the pagan internet 101. McSherry explains the basics of both Wicca and getting online with excellent detail--she thinks of pretty much everything. It's a good berginner's book just for that material.

However, where this book really shines is in online group dynamics. It's obvious she has the experience she claims, as her writing is thoroughly backed up by anecdotes. She's careful to explain how online communication differs from in-person communication, how misunderstandings can arise even easier, and how to deal with a setting that is more easily left than a HPS' home. She also guides the reader through reasons to (or not to) join up with an online group.

I only have two very minor quibbles. First, she uses Wiccan and pagan interchangably, and on p. 9 says that all pagasn follow the Wiccan Rede. That's not so--I and many other pagans follow neither the Rede nor any ethical statement like it. The other minor gripe is on p. 45, she says not to follow any group that accepts outlandish things like pop culture entities and the Illumunati as "truth". As someone who has worked my fair share of pop culture magic (and who is married to Taylor Ellwood, author of the book, "Pop Culture Magick") I do have to disagree that modern mythology is less effective *in practice* than ancient mythology. If we can use modern ritual tools to work with ancient beings, we can also use modern (and ancient) technology to work with modern mythology.

However, those two points are two very minor disagreements I have, and they do not take aweay from the quality or purpose of the book. If you know somebody who's just getting online, and they're pagan (new or not) pickup a copy of "The Virtual Pagan" for them. I really wish I'd had this back in the mid-90's when I first discovered paganism and the internet about the same time, becuase it *really* would have made my introduction a lot smoother--and probably helped me to avoid some of my early flame wars!

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Idea, Wrong Book
Here is a good idea that went astray.Sometimes good material can get lost amongst material that is highly controversial.

The idea of this book, to explore Wicca and Paganism on the Internet, was a good idea. There is material here which would have been good on its own; resources that the Pagan community on the Internet can use to further studies and make surfing interesting and educational.

Ms. McSherry provides information about pagan oriented email groups, chat channels and websites that would have made a good book if presented as a resource tool for Internet Pagans. Her discussion on how the internet works, email and chat room etiquette, flaming and witch wars shows she has much familiarity with the workings of Cyberspace and she did a good job on these topics.

What went astray was her inclusion of her own personal path of CyberCovens and her commentaries on Paganism. I defer to the passage on page 9, which almost set me to pass on reviewing this book:

"If you are new to Paganism, then you need to know a few things about this religion:

1. We all truly only agree on one thing:" An' it harm none, do what ye will."As a result, we do not take any action - magickal or otherwise - that would harm any person, including ourselves."

Paganism categorized as a religion, that Pagans agree on anything spiritual, that the Wiccan Rede is followed by all Pagans and that everyone has a "harm none" ethic makes me feel that Ms. McSherry should have stuck to the technical aspects of the Internet.

There is more in this book on Ms. McSherry's CyberCovens, and the value of connection without contact is something that has been touched on in many circles on the Internet. I believe Ms. McSherry has provided fuel here for some very heated discussions amongst both students and teachers of many paths who use the Internet as a tool for the Pagan Community.

While it is interesting to read, Ms. McSherry's personal path should have been presented as a separate book. The usefulness of this book as an Internet resource becomes muddled in her attempt to define Paganism and present CyberCovens as an alternative to real life experiences.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Reference and Guide
I was a computer illiterate! After exploreing the PC with the help of friends and family I felt better about my skill.I read this book and now, I am a 'thoroughly modern witch'. Not too bad for an old Crone. Thanks for writing this book so that even I can understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creating an online Pagan group, and keeping it vital
Lisa McSherry's Virtual Pagan provides a virtual map for getting online, creating a Pagan group, and keeping it vital. The basics of computer user, from email etiquette to building a cyber altar, are here to appeal to a mixed audience of beginners and those with some experience who want to translate the computer world to a meaningful spiritual environment.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Guide to Paganism on the Net You Will Need
This unassuming looking little book is a gem. As a twenty-one year veteran Witch, I have read and reviewed many books on the subject of Wicca, Witchcraft and Paganism. Out of the three books out there on this particular subject, this one is the most concise, useful and practical book I have found.

McSherry gives perfectly sensible guidelines for how to get on the Net, how to find Pagans once you are there and what to do with them after you find them. Her chapters that discuss what a coven is and is not is useful for anyone who is thinking of joining one, whether in cyberspace or in the "real world," and her dos and don'ts for online communication should be emblazoned upon the hearts of everyone on the net. She accurately portrays various positive and negative Pagan archetypal personalities one may find on the Internet, and in doing so, gives the practitioner a taste for what the virtual Pagan community is like in an accurate, consise format.

If you only want one book about Paganism and the net, this is the one; the others, which I have also read are vastly inferior. ... Read more

This is a necessary item on my desk filling in tidbits of wisdom and knowledge not ordinarly found in a calendar. There's a little witch in all of us, and it is nourishing soul food.

5-0 out of 5 stars Multi-use Day planner
I really like this product because I can use it to record my normal daily routines AND keep track of moon phases, sun travel, and times to best do spell work. And, I confess, as disorganized as I am, with a poor short term memory, I have great fun in making a concerted effort to wear whatever the color of the day is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This is a fantastic reference guide and unlike others, there is an entry for EVERY day of the year.

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting resource
I love Witches' Calendars, and although The Pagan Book of Days remains my favorite, The Wicca Book of Days by Gerina Dunwich is a great read also. What I like the most about this book is that unlike The Pagan Book of Days,it has something for everyday of the year. Each month listing begins witha brief history of the month itself, birthstone, flowers, and astrologicalsigns. Each day has a magickal tidbit such as God/dess observance days, festivals, birthdays, or history. The illustrations are beautiful and givethe book an almost "medieval" feeling. For the record, there areNO spells or rituals in this book, but there is a wonderful poem by Dunwichat the front of the book.If you are interested in history and want toknow more about ancient Pagan festivals and when they were observed, getthis book! You won't be disappointed.Blessed be.

4-0 out of 5 stars interesting read
This is a great book for general information. It's nice to have a little tidbit to read every morning, kind of like those daily calenders where you rip off the top page for the next day's advice. The title is very true tothe work so if you are looking for a how too, or a spell book this is notfor you. It is a good reference however for the background into wicca. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful approach to wicca
This is a wonderful book on wicca. It has rituals, spells, divination, and prayers. It even has sections for children and it also goes by the seasons. Patricia Telesco is a wonderful author.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interested In Wicca? Buy This Book
Though this is a VERY good book.. it still lacks information.. Thedivinitions, prayers, and spells were wonderful.. and simple enough for abeginner.. this book is excellent for teaching.. This book is somethingeveryone interested in Wicca should buy since its informative and simple tofollow. Blessed Be

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than most of the other "millenium" books
I always enjoy Patricia Telesco's books, and this one is no exception.Throughout the whole book Trish stresses the importance of respect for our Earth Mother, by offering prayers and charms designed to help her heal andto help foster more respect for her in the next millenium. Aside from theGaia prayers, the second most interesting part is "Future Visions,Ancient Quests", a chapter on divination. It includes omens, scrying, lot casting, dice casting, playing cards, and divination ideas forchildren.Another thing that makes this book unique is the amount ofprayers and spells designed for children, allowing them to express theirown needs. The seasonal spells and rituals are also very beautiful.Allin all, a great read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Solitary Practitioners Guide & Reference
This book is definitely one of the easiest to understand.. Though it lacks history of what Wicca is and what it stands for.. it truly is a MUST READfor any Witch. Newbies to the craft may be left with some small questions..so it would be wise if you know nothing about the craft, to have adictionary near by.. there are wonderful "kitchen witch"(modernwitch) spells, simple invocations, and a lot of easy to understand readingmaterial.. the down side of this book though.. is that most of it seems totake on a view of a "white-light" witch's perspective.. it isIMPORTANT that people realize that all magic is equal.. and ALL spells havea consequence.. the 3x's law still applies.. This book is easy to read, easy to understand, and extremely helpful.. I have been a solitary witchfor many years, and have found that this book is also better used as aSolitary Practitioner's Guide & Reference.. Coveners are not discuragedbut I think most would agree that the spells suit a solitary witch ratherthan a coven or a group.. though I am sure you could write your own spellsfrom the ideas given here..(The ice-cube spell is as simple as it iseffective) Always remember to Thank the God & Goddess after a ritual..Brightest Blessings & Blessed Be!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but helps if one already has "the basics"
As with many of Ms. Telesco's books, this one is another great one in her down-to-earth 'Kitchen Witch' style, without all the ceremonial hoo-haw. However, it is not to be considered, at least in my opinion, a beginnerbook. It does not give definitions or any background, or basic tenants ofWicca or anything that teaches the religion per-se. For example, thebeginner reading at one point may go "Watchtowers?!? What is that andhow do I do it?" An explanation is not included that I could see. Andinterestingly, there is also no bibliography or any references orappendices, something that I think every book on Wicca or Witchcraft shouldhave for further study, to outline the sources used to write the book andgive it credibility. Not that Ms. Telesco needs any here - I have many ofher books and love them all, but it seemed odd to me that there wasnothing, the book just starts and ends abruptly, period. However, asidefrom that I think my overall opinion is that it is really a great book forsomeone further down their Path, it's very uplifting and spiritual;wonderful and refreshing as we go into the next millenium continuing on ourspiritual journey to keep spirituality and our Pagan religions alive in ourlives and in this busy ever-changing world. It contains many, many goodrituals, meditations, invocations, prayers and more for multiple situationssuch as for the earth, for yourself, for growth, etc. There are evenchildren's prayers and meditations, something that I don't usually see in abook of this genre. I have to say that it is less about Wicca (since it isonly referenced in passing, as in "as Wiccans, we feel...") andmore about our spiritual growth and aspirations as Pagans as we prepareourselves to move ahead and grow on the fast track to (and in) the year2000 while trying to remain true to the Old Ways and the magick in everydaylife. Would make a excellent supplemental to a more experienced Wiccan orWitch's library and is well rounded and pleasant to read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CONFUSED BY THE "NEW" (OLD) RELIGIONS?THIS BOOK CAN HELP
Pete Jennings is the "High Gothi" of Odinshof (an "Odinist" organization) as well as the retired President of the Pagan Federation; he also comments on BBC Radio at times. So he is evidently well-qualified to write this very helpful overview (published in 2002) of a variety of Pagan practices.

A variety of spiritual paths may nowadays be called "Pagan": Gardnerian and Alexandrian Witchcraft, Wicca, Druidry, Asatru, Shahmanism, and others.Jennings has separate chapters on all of these paths, as well as chapters summarizing "common features" among many of these traditions, such as "Festivals and Rites of Passage," 'Sacred Sites," Using Magic, etc. Most chapters end with a "Things to Do" section, with ideas for practicing such ideas and rituals.

Jennings is a very clear expositor of a wide variety of viewpoints, and treats all viewpoints fairly.

At the end of the book, Jennings provides a Glossary, a helpful Bibliography, along with helpful websites and organization names.

The book is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in a general overview of alternative spiritualities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must For The Well Rounded Witch
I am not a Wiccan but I found Magicka School when I was looking for even more answers on my path and really needed something concise and organized. I found that in Wicca Revealed. The Content is simply amazing, the sections are detailed and well put together. The Author explains things in a way that I was able to really understand and he leaves you with that sense of wanting to know more. I actually really love that at the end of each chapter you have a Research Project as well as exercises to experience. This book not only provides you with some detailed and organized information that will help shape you on your path but it provides the techniques to do this as well. Each technique helps you discover more about who you are and how you interact in your community. The Research Projects also allow you to really get into things and push yourself to the max. This helps define where you desire to be and how you wish to get there. I will admit that its not my favorite style of writing as I enjoy a more uplifting and fun filled training but with what this book offers I was easily able to overlook this and get into it. This book is precise and is written with facts supported by its sources.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to help you discover Wicca!
When I started out on the "Magicka School Journey" I wasn't a beginner nor a stranger to wicca, yet I have learned so much during those 12 months I studied Wicca Revealed. I feel like this book should belong in every witch's library, wheter you are just interested in wicca or an initiated High Priest/Priestess.
I finished the course 2 years ago and still now I find myself opening the book to look up information here and there.
The book is easy to follow, yet doesn't give you that "dummy" feeling we all like to avoid. After finishing you have a decent overview of what wicca is, so you can decide for yourself whether to continue on this journey or find your own path. Which ever choice you make, you will at least have gotten to know yourself better and enjoyed a very eye opening experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wicca Revealed
Ive been on Magicka for over a year and ive just finished the Wicca Revealed course, it was not only in formative but encompassed a large range of subject matter from the history of Wicca, to how Wicca is practiced today. I highly recommend to anyone wanting to expand their knowledge to take this course. This course is for everyone from the beginner to the experienced practitioner. Ive also finished the beginner Tarot course and im now working on the advanced course. Ive found these courses to be very helpful and have enjoyed them. Id like to take this opportunity to thank Magicka School for helping me find deeper meaning in my life. Elia V

5-0 out of 5 stars Magicka books and school
I stumbled on Magickaschool by chance , trying to find information to solve my questions and curiosity. I joined the school and began the course. Bought the book to go along with it. Loved the book, could not stop reading it. So much information, but also easy to read and understand which I found quite encouraging. The subjects covered answered my questions. Once I started this I knew I was on the right path for me. As suggested by the title the book covers a year in the craft, great for beginners, all those words that confuse , read the book and be confused no more. Along with reading the book and doing the course there comes an incredible journey , one that should never be overlooked, the journey to your inner self, I loved how enlightened I felt after reading this book. I would recommend this book strongly to any one who is considering the path, or who has questions still unanswered.
Along with the reading and learning there are practical excercises that help so much, plus research options to further enhance your knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great course on Wicca!!!
Although I am not wiccan, nor am I a beginner, I first took this course as an online course at the author's website.I didn't see the harm in it, I had time on my hands and I figured I could think outside thd box and find something to get out of the course.Little did I know that it would take me on a year long journey of self discovery. This course did many things for me.It strengthened my relationship with my God in what many believe to be a Goddess centered religion. It opened me up to many traditons of wicca that I was uneducated about. It opened me up to working with angels and even helped me through the death of my Mother. I have had several people since express an intrest in learning more about wicca and out of all of the possible courses out there this is the one I always recomend. Not just because it is a great beginners course, but because as an experienced witch with no affilation to wicca it helped me and I got so much out of it.And even those people that I recomend it to always come back with good things to say about it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to the Wiccan Faith
This text needs quite a bit of study to fully appreciate. What it has that others do not, frankly, is a grasp of what Wicca is as a religion and an ethical system. How many times have you read secondary sources that gave a mere chapter to religion, a few paragraphs to ethics, badly thought out (or not at all) and carried right along to explain ritual and magick with depth and relish? The author rightly assigns metaphysics a separate category within the study of Wicca.

Throughout the text, emphasis is on research, scholarship, and the need for academic accountability.Only with a solid grounding in theory, and a clear understanding of Wicca's lineage, can we elevate our faith to a valid system of belief, and use it as a basis for an ethical way of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Trad Book
The thing many people don't realize is this is a specific text book for a specific trad, Universal Eclectic Wicca. Beyond that, it is a great into book. Very good scholarship and metaphysical insight. If you're looking for some NON-fluffy bunny writing on Wicca, check this book out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for someone with the right expectations
I love that Amazon provides a forum for reader reviews, and I usually place a great deal of value on them. Having read the other reviews of this book, though, I'd have to say that many people seem to have missed point, and in some cases seem to be giving an unnecessarily low rating for spurious reasons.

As some other reviewers have pointed out, this is--more or less--the textbookfor the UEW Tradition of Wicca. Most people are familiar with the Gardnerian and Alexandrian traditions, and understand that what applies to one tradition may not apply to another. That doesn't mean that one Tradition is Wicca and another is not, it simply means that the two Traditions have differing beliefs. That's par for the course for Wicca, as well as for many other Pagan and Neo-pagan religions.

One reviewer has suggested that Wicca is "all about the magic," so she doesn't regard this book as about Wicca. You can practice magic and not be a Wiccan; in fact, you can practice magic and be an atheist if you choose. Magic is a practice, while Wicca is a religion. Some religions either don't believe in magic, believe it comes from the devil, or regard magic as "miracles" from their god. In the religion of most Wiccans, UEWiccans included, magic can also come from the individual practitioner. However, magic is not a "requirement" for a Wiccan the way mass is a "requirement" for Catholics. It is a practice, certainly a common practice among Wiccans, but the fact that this book addresses the religion as opposed to particular practices is precisely what makes it (and the tradition) appropriate for solitary practitioners.

As a solitaire, you might have your own personal way of working magic, and your own understanding of how magic works. MacMorgan's point here is that developing a unique understanding of your religion and the way you practice it is part and parcel of being solitary. She then shares those beliefs that members of UEW hold in common. UEWies may practice their religion differently from one another, but they are bound by a set of Creeds and some common understanding.

That addressed, this book is not for everyone. If you want a book of spells and rituals, this book is not for you. If you don't like traditions in general, and many don't, you probably won't like this book, either. However, there IS an off chance that this book will provide you a sort of alternative, more open, more flexible view of what a tradition of Wicca is. If you're looking for a tradition that fits you, you may find this book very helpful. Even if you ultimately decide UEW isn't for you--because this information is presented here in a logical, easy-to-understand manner, the book may help you to know what to look for in other traditions. After reading this book you may understand better what issues matter to you in a tradition, what things you want to look for and what questions to ask. In addition, this is a good book for eclectics who may be interested in figuring out a way to ethically and logically apply eclecticism in a way that is consistent and meaningful.

There's a lot of good information in this book. If you're a beginner and want a good overview of Wicca, without the trappings of a particular tradition, I would recommend Scott Cunningham's _Wicca for the Solitary Practitioner_ first. But if you've gone beyond that and now want to investigate how to develop your personal practice, you won't go wrong with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars All One Wicca
Kaatryn MacMorgan really helped me define and answer questions about my spirituality. If you are looking for 1 book to answer your questions with an open mind and relate it to what you hold in your heart, this is it. Before you try to define yourself within any tradition or choose a religion or path give this a read.

5-0 out of 5 stars As the title states...
"A Study in the Universal Eclectic Wicca tradition."It seems that some reviewers missed the whole thing. This is not, and does not claim to be, a primer on general Wicca. It is the textbook for the UEW tradition, and other study is obviously involved. If you are at all interested in the basics of a tradition that is essentially geared toward the solitary practitioner this book is definitely for you.If you already have the basics I suggest Wicca 333 instead. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title For What's Really A Mediocre Beginners Book
When I first came across the title "The Gay Wicca Book" by Bruce K. Wilborn three months prior to the books release date, I was excited with the possibility of a Wiccan book for of the gay and lesbian community.I preordered the book and was happy to see it arrive at my door three months later, but my joy was quickly replaced with consternation and disappointment as I began read it.Apparently, what I (and many other readers) thought was a Wiccan book for gay and lesbian practitioners is actually nothing more than just one more beginner's "Wicca 101" book, and not a particularly good one at that.As I read through its 21 chapters hoping to find anything remotely close to what the book's title implies, I found very little of any real value.

Sadly, what the book does contain is often too condensed to be of much use for a beginner, and nothing new is presented that an experienced Wiccan wouldn't already know.In fact, the number of pages in many of the book's 21 chapters can be counted with one hand. The shortest chapter, which is entitled "Philosophy", is only one paragraph long on a single page. The "History" chapter is about 5 pages long. The average number of pages for each of the first 20 chapters is about 9 pages, but the last chapter entitled "Celebrating the Sabbats" is a whopping 63 pages. Here, the author spends time describing each Sabbat that includes a ritual for each. However, for a beginner who might be solitary, the rituals are for groups or covens; and there is nothing in the descriptions specifically for gay and lesbian practitioners. If the beginner is a coven initiate, it is likely that the coven would have a prescribed list of books for the initiate to read that may or may not (probably not) include this book.

The author does mention that he and his partner are gay, but that's the about the extent of what this book mentions for gay and lesbian practitioners.A better title for this book would have been "Condensed Beginner's Wicca For Anyone, As Described by a Gay Wiccan".Consequently, I can only rate "The Gay Wicca Book" with 1 star.

If you are looking for a Wiccan book specifically geared towards gay and lesbian practitioners, I recommend "Gay Witchcraft: Empowering the Tribe" by Christopher Penczak. If you are a beginner, there are many excellent books available that are much better than "The Gay Wicca Book" such as "To Ride a Silver Broomstick: New Generation Witchcraft" by Silver Ravenwolf, "Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner" by Scott Cunningham, "The Inner Temple of Witchcraft: Magick, Meditation and Psychic Development" by Christopher Penczak and "The Spiral Dance" by Starhawk.

1-0 out of 5 stars Where's the gay?
I have to concur with the other reviewers.Just take your other Wicca 101 books and every once in a while say "And gay people can do this too" and you will have everything this book has to offer. It seemed almost as if he wrote a regular Wicca 101 and then sprinkled things in randomly once it had been finished.Gay Witchcraft by Christopher Penczak looks much more promising.

1-0 out of 5 stars Generic
This really is just another of the myriad of Wicca 101 books that are out on the market. ... The information in here is nothing that you can't find in any other book that is an introduction to Wicca. The saddest part is that the title would lead you to believe that the author is going to take up the concept of gay spirituality and look at Wicca for a GLBT perspective.Thereare a lot of ways he could have done this. The role of homoertocism and gender variance in the history of Paganism and Wicca.Gay archetypes.Queer frienly deities.Gay energy.None of these issues are addressed. This book is a major letdown.

1-0 out of 5 stars Big Fake
Men, why didnt I belive the reviews. Sometimes you still wanna try it out. This book has nothing to do with gay witchcraft. Its a general introduction into Wicca and therefor there are plenty of better books on the market. It doesnt reveal anything new to the gay practitioner and neither to other witches with a little bit of knowledge. If it wouldnt have this faked title, probably one could review it a little bit better (3 Stars) as a general guide into the Craft but so, one feels simply cheated. What a chance lost.....

1-0 out of 5 stars A Missed Opportunity
I had high hopes when I first picked up this book. The gay Pagan community has had a few good authors over the years (Arthur Evans, Randy Conner, and Will Roscoe come to mind), but we have not yet had a text that speaks to us specifically regarding Pagan ritual practices.Unfortunately, this book did not live up to the expectations engendered by the promise of its title. It instead ended up being yet another in a long line of Wicca 101books with very little information on the distinct issues LGBT people bring to the table.By attempting to appeal to the widest possible audience (this "gay" book is also "for heterosexuals looking for an accessible introduction to the Wiccan tradition"), the author lost a unique opportunity to provide a tome of real benefit to the gay community.A pity. There are other problems with the book. For example, the history section still relies on the myth of survival and the myth of the Burning Times, both of which have been discredited by serious scholars, Pagan and mundane alike. The author has also reduced the Wiccan Laws to four "laws," which is bound to rub not a few Traditionalists the wrong way.And he makes some unlikely generalizations, such as that gays are overwhelmingly accepted in the Craft community today. This ignores some remaining deep-seated homophobia (see Ventimiglia's "Wiccan Rede" for an example), including the dismissal of queer covens as not "authentic." And while queer Wiccans may have an easier time of it in the US, there continues to be some resistance from Traditionalists in the UK. In closing, I would recommend that the potential reader to buy a used copy of "Blossom of Bone" if s/he wants to get a flavor of how queer Pagan worship has been in the past and could yet be. ... Book of magickal herbs and plants - the subtitle tells all. And although my purpose is different (I want to plan and plant a garden is such a way that it magickally protects the house and enhances lives of its inhabitants), which this book did not entirely fulfil, it is informative and covers a lot in its not so large format. It covers some basics of planting, fertilizing etc in section on herb gardening, lists and describes properties of magickal herbs, has a section on plants associated with fairies / elementals, section onn green healing, mind altering plants, dangerous plants, herb omens and supersticions, divinatory herbs and a very useful glossary. I agree with one of previous reviewers that good info is somehow lost in the rest. Good book thou, happy to have it

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank-you Gerina
This was my first book on Wicca and it was very informative.
I have successfully grown many herbs with the help of this
book, Thank-you Gerina Dunwich.T. Shields

3-0 out of 5 stars The good stuff gets lost in the mix.
This book does make a good addition to a reference library as there is a lot covered.A plus is plant associations for other pantheons besides Roman and Greek. However I didn't find it logically laid out and there are long paragraphs that would have better served the reader in grid format. I also found too much mythology and old wives tales mixed in with the really helpful bits. There are chapters dedicated to these topics so it could have been better organized.Still, there is enough useful information to make it worthwhile as long as you are willing to spend a little extra time looking for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Herbal for Witches!
I HIGHLY recommend this well-written and informative book to all Witchesand anyone looking for information on the folklore and magickal applicationof herbs. The author, a practicing Witch, includes many areas of herbalismthat many other books don't (such as mind-expanding plants, herbal poisons, and other such "taboo" subjects) and there is an excellentsection devoted to the mandrake, "the most magickal of all plants andherbs." Gardening, healing, and divination are also covered in thismodern Witch's book of enchanted herbs and plants, and a helpful glossaryof herbalism terms is included at the back of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Incredible, yet sometimes predictable.
I always enjoy reading books by Gerina Dunwich.I hope she enjoys what she does, and doesn't write just for the money. The Wicca Garden is a great book, but Dunwich should have put more ways to use herbs in healingand perhaps spells and rituals involving herbs.I'm now actually somewhatsurprised she didn't.Her chapter on growing herbs is good and I enjoyedher chapter on Herbs of the Enchanted World, all the folklore involvingfairies was quite interesting and reminded me of a time centuries ago. This book, like many of Dunwich's, is a large list.Lists of everything. Don't get me wrong though, this books makes an excellent reference guidethat I have referred to several times.Yes, if you are interested inherbs, please look for this book and hurry, it's out of print.Thanks. Product Description
Containing general educational exercises blended with basic Pagan concepts and symbols, this workbook presents a wonderful introduction to Wicca for young children. Originally produced as a teaching aide for her grandchildren, Reverend Rieth's textbook grew into a project, which was home produced in limited quantities and sold at Pagan festivals nationwide by only a handful of vendors--it very quickly became one of their best-selling items.Part grammar school primer and part coloring book, the activites within are designed for children to learn at their own pace without the need for direct supervision while still being fun and entertaining. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Homeschool!
I use this workbook as part of our homeschool day for my 5 yo. My 8 and 10 yo even join in when we decide to sing the songs. It is wonderful and really helps incorporate the beliefs along with learning to write and read. I wish we had a lot more books like this!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is the best!
I have 6 kids, this book really speaks to them on their level. If you have kids under 6 years and you want to teach them about Wicca this is your book. It has songs and activities for people of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful for kids and adults
This is a wonderful way to teach children and I've enjoyed it just as much as they have.

5-0 out of 5 stars My First Little Workbook of Wicca
This workbook is great. It teaches a few of the basics, like the ABC's, with a Wiccan touch. Each page can be colored. There's letter and number cards that can be cut out. They aren't any thicker than regular paper though. It teaches the days of the week and the signs of the zodiac.Theres a list of activities and a few prayers. It teaches the seasons, grouping, simple math, patterns, colors, numbers, and it has tons of lines for printing practice. It would work with a child from 3-7 years old. There's a ton of stuff, it's a pretty thick book.

3-0 out of 5 stars comentarios sobre el formato
El contenido muy bueno, el formato regular. Es demasiado grande para resultar cómodo de leer y las cubiertas son demasiado endebles. Sin embargo esta tradución es digna, hay una edición unos años posterior cuya traducción es pésima ¡no la adquieran!

5-0 out of 5 stars El Manual Escolar de la Wicca

5-0 out of 5 stars De lo mejor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mucha Información
... Read more
