Scholars have long noted the consistent canonical ordering of the minor prophets, yet have not located their unity. In this instructive book Paul House presents a close reading that demonstrates the Twelve's cohering principles. Both literary criticism and the minor prophets are succinctly introduced here. Biblical theology is also furthered through the study's focus on unity. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Gives Structure to Gospel of Luke
I picked up this book after reading other commentaries on Luke that left me rather cold. I was interested in the literary approach because I was hoping to understand the structure of Luke (which at first seems rather disjointed).

The author provided ample thematic structure to pull the book of Luke together for me and offered some significant insights. However, the prose style of the author is hard to read. He tends to jump around from idea to idea and is constantly leaping ahead of himself. I had to simple put my head down and march into the wind!

Worth the effort of reading, but its too bad that it required SO MUCH effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for New Testament Studies
Robert C. Tannehill's monograph, The Narrative Unity of Luke-Acts: A Literary Interpretation (Volume 1: The Gospel of Luke) is a commentary on the narrative unity of the Lukan narratives, examining how the text's individual narrative units contribute to accomplish Luke's overarching purpose to demonstrate God's redemptive plan through Christ and his followers.Recent developments in biblical and non-biblical literary narrative criticism have allowed the author to examine the Lukan texts from a new perspective, offering insights into the language, patterns, contrasts, ironies, pathos, and many other features that make up the literary whole.Tannehill's effort to probe the text through the lens of narrative criticism reappraises some of the familiar dominant themes in Luke, further enhancing the understanding of the text and illuminating previously uncharted narrative trajectories and progressions of Lukan thought.
Similar to the other Synoptics, the Gospel of Luke is written in a vivid, episodic style, yet with little apparent linkage to the sequence of the story as a whole. From Luke's second volume, it is clear that the author is proficient at stringing together common themes and producing a coherent story, yet the low contextual nature of the Gospel narrative appears to leave significant gaps in the story, leaving modern readers without a seamless understanding of the unity of the narrative. However, after careful analysis of the plot and major characters, a single controlling purpose emerges- the purpose of God, connecting the individual episodes and creating a rich literary tapestry that enhances the understanding of unity of the text and its interpretation.
To assist in unravelling the complexity of the narrative connections and elucidating an interpretive context for understanding the mission of Jesus and his witnesses, Tannehill explores key literary disclosures that function as signposts, providing direction through the narrative maze and enabling the identification of various thematic routes within the text.Special attention is given to a wide range of individuals and groups encountered in the narrative and Jesus' developing relationships with these groups or individuals. The author examines Jesus' ministry to the oppressed and excluded, his interactions with the crowd, his encounters with authorities, and his relationships with the disciples and followers.Avoiding technical terms of literary theory employed by other commentaries, Tannehill seeks to enliven Luke's literary design to achieve narrative and ideological progression and emphasize how the narrative rhetoric unfolds to effectively communicate how God's purposes are accomplished in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first Unity book
Christian Healing was the first Unity book published by Charles Fillmore in 1909, which means that almost a century passed since it came out of print. And it still touches people's hearts with its message!

Many people in our days write on spiritual principles of healing and wholeness, and yet I recommend this classical book. Indeed, there is nothing new about spiritual healing. It was successfully practiced by Jesus and His immediate followers, who realized their authority over the natural elements. His healing secrets were re-discovered in XIX century, and Fillmores were among the pioneers of this new healing movement. Their convictions were supported by their experiences - both Charles and Myrtle Fillmore healed themselves and many others through the power of faith. The principles of wholeness that they found are still the same, and they will prove to be an effective remedy for all those who will discover and apply them.

I was the one who translated this book into Russian and published it on the web. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Centered Riding
This book was very helpful to me in terms of developing an attitude and approach towards my riding. Not only were the technical aspects of riding covered, the mindset that allows one to gain confidence and control was addressed at length. As a high-beginner rider I found the information in this book very useful for taking the next step, into intermediate riding skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
I am an absolute beginner in horseback riding and I have really appreciated the attention that the Mrs.Hill gives to the mental side of riding.(maybe due to the fact that I am not so young even if I started riding only some months ago...)
It's very useful to see and understand that beyond your posture in saddle ,also your mind approach is important to get the best from the equestrian activities.
My personal target in equestrian sports is to have relaxed riding and in this book you may find important suggestions in starting with a relaxed (but not careless) approach to the horse, to the grooming, to the riding etc... having the best , avoiding to transform a anti-stress activity in full-of-doubts-and anxious-one.
This doesn't mean that also worrying features (like injuries) are not considered: on the contrary there are many parts treating about the potential dangers in riding, the wrong approach to the horse, the best way to ride safely .
...To be prepared is the best defence and gives you a stronger and safer confidence when you're going to ride...
I strongly recommend this book to the beginner-riders who are searching for a good source of suggestions to prepare "their souls" to face without worries and approach with self confidence the"obstacles" in riding horseback.

3-0 out of 5 stars A book for the novice rider
I have read quite a bit of Ms. Hill's books and have found them very helpful. However, I was a little disappointed in this book.It is geared for a beginner and isn't very useful for the more experienced rider who needs improvement. She had a few useful points here and there but I felt like I was reading a motivational and/or human anatomy book.I would recommend Swift's Centered Riding as a wonderful source instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am so glad I got this book as a gift
As a beginning adult rider I really appreciated the value I got with this book. I wanted to make the most of my weekly riding lessons and I feel I really already learned so much from this book. I got it as a gift from my husband but, if you buy it it is definitely worth the money. It prepares me for my lessons and also clarifies things very well. The most astonishing thing about this book is how it addresses every issue in a way that can improve skills and understanding for everybody- Beginner and Advanced, Western and English,etc.). It is very easy to read and understand. I really like Hill's writing style and will try out some of her other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very, very good resource
This was one of the first books I purchased for my riding library five years ago; at age 33 I was a rank beginner just starting lessons, and I wanted to supplement the physical experience with some off-the-horsestudying.Today it's pretty dog-eared, which reflects how often I've goneback to it.It covers just about every aspect of riding one can thinkof(the aids, body awareness, feel, creative imagery to help position,psychology-even proper attire and tack!), and is written clearly andconcisely, never getting dull or overly technical(wish I could say thesame for some of the others I've shelled out for).It is also veryreasonably priced-a good "value for money", as the british say, which is why I've rated it so highly.I would give it as a gift to anynovice, adult or otherwise. ... "There's one rule in the interstellar liberation force: you never take off your helmet. Even if the atmosphere of whatever planet you are liberating from the vicious aliens does happen to breathable, there could be any number of lethal viruses or microbes. The body armor and comm equipment is first rate, and the aliens seem to be on the run. Then, one day, a soldier is forced to take off his helmet to survive. The consequences are disastrous for the liberation force, but it is no toxin, virus, or microbe that infects the military: it's the truth . . . 4-0 out of 5 stars Short Sci-Fi story, but well written
Before going on deployment to Iraq I bought a kindle and loaded it with as many books as I could, and this story was "recomended" to me by amazon with half a dozen other purchases, though im a fast reader and read it in about a half hour, it was worth it.Essentially its a short story about a counter offensive against an hostile alien empire by Human soldiers wearing powered armor (akin to the original Starship Troopers novel or Armor)There is only one real rule, never take off your helmet becauase of the hostile atmosphere (even if the planet is supposedly a conquered Terran colony)
**SPOILER ALERT**
Well of course at one point someone accidently takes off his helmet, and sees that his foes are not as he thought, then is accused of being a traitor, sedition and insubordination, which in a time of "intersteller" war is punishable by death. As a two tour veteran of Iraq, i must say I dont see peoples allusions to the war when compared to this story, I think its a creative use of technology and shows that in reality, soldiers are moral, free thinking intelligent indivivudals, and that technology, not people, is the only thing with the potential to corrupt.
**SPOILER ENDS**
my only complaint is the stroy was so short, but it seems to set itself up for a sequal, which I hope the Author Mr. Carter does. ... Read more

Product Description
The unity of the body of Christ is a not a desirable option. It is a divine mandate--and a practical necessity for leading the world to believe in Jesus. But the West has passed through a 200-year period--the Modern period-- during oneness among Christians has been practically impossible. Now there has been a major shift to what is called Postmodernity. It resists rigid categories and affirms inclusion and flexibility.

The "Jesus proposal" is that Christians from all denominations can benefit from this cultural shift. We can experience relational unity in Christ--unity greater and more important than theological agreement, churchly structures, and institutional loyalty. This relational faith has a better chance for acceptance now than ever in the past two centuries. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth Your Time
I've enjoyed hearing in person the many sermons on which this book was based. It's high time - not, it's past time - we Christians united on that which unites us, a shared faith in the saving grace of the crucified and resurrected Christ, rather than on the human traditions and failings that separate us. I no longer care if you worship in church where the service is like a rock concert or where they sing nothing written after 1950, and sing it with only a piano or even a capella. You and I are worshiping the same Father and the same Son.

I would also recommend Tod Bolsinger's excellent book, It Takes a Church to Raise a Christian.

5-0 out of 5 stars I could not put this book down
I could not put this book down. I kept saying to myself, "He is saying what I have been thinking for years." I am tired of the competitiveness all too often in Christianity. "I am right and you are wrong, therefore we cannot worship together." Or, "I have it figured out." "You have love and happiness, but I have truth." This "superior" thinking drives me crazy and Satan loves it. He loves a divided Jesus following.

This book demonstrates how we should all be working together to learn God's will and truth. We do this best together. When we disagree theologically we should continue as brothers and sisters.

Can a man striving to know God's will be incorrect and still saved? Well, let's see. Not according to some. But then, what about Jesus' apostles? Were they not wrong in some of their beliefs about Jesus and His coming? Were they lost? God is their judge and our judge. This books formulates a new thinking of peace and unity so we can fight the real enemy, Satan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Long overdue
Rubel and John have written a superb book calling us back to a theology centered on the mindset and heart of Jesus. The book also calls us to leave our common institutional theology that produces a sectarian mindset. The "proposal" is that RELATIONSHIPS will become the filter and lens for our discipleship, not institutions. They do a superb job of showing the reader how scripture calls us to this relational theology over and over again. They equally do a great job communicating HOW and WHY we evolved into a people that became
institutional motivated in our discipleship.

Not everyone will have ears to hear this call to become more Christ centered as opposed to institutional centered. Not everyone had ears 2,000 years ago either. ... Read more

Product Description
One People? is the first book-length study of the major problem confronting the Jewish future: the availability or otherwise of a way of mending the schisms between Reform and Orthodox Judaism, between religious and secular Jews in Israel, and between Israel itself and the diaspora-all of which have been deepened by the fierce and continuing controversy over the question of 'who is a Jew?'One People? is a study of the background to this and related controversies. It traces the fragmentation of Jewry in the wake of the Enlightenment, the variety of Orthodox responses to these challenges, and the resources of Jewish tradition for handling diversity. Having set out the background to the intractability of the problems, it ends by examining the possibilities within Jewish thought that might make for convergence and reconciliation. The Chief Rabbi employs a variety of disciplines-history, sociology, theology, and halakhic jurisprudence-to clarify a subject in which these dimensions are inextricably interwoven. He also explores key issues such as the underlying philosophy of Jewish law, and the nature of the collision between tradition and modern consciousness.Written for the general reader as much as the academic one, this is a lucid and thought-provoking presentation of the dilemmas of Jewish Orthodoxy in modernity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars well written and thoughtful
I liked this book. It addresses in a thoughtful manner many of the problems which we see in our people.

5-0 out of 5 stars an explanation of what separates us
In this book, Sacks (the Chief Rabbi of Great Britian] focuses on how Orthodox Jews should relate to Reform Judaism (and to a lesser extent, other liberal Jewish movements; Sacks focuses on Reform because it is the oldest non-Orthodox denomination, and because it differs more sharply from Orthodoxy than does Conservative or Reconstructionist Judaism).

Sacks sketches out three options: exclusivism (that is, treating non-Orthodox Jews as if they were Christians), pluralism (treating other Jewish movements as equally valid), and what he calls "inclusivism"- treating rival Jewish movements as partially but not completely valid.

Sacks endorses the latter, middle, course, asserting that pluralism is impractical because Reform (and to a lesser extent, other Jewish denominations) reject the binding character of traditional Jewish law, and thus create unbridgeable gaps between Orthodoxy and its rivals.

Sacks also explains the differences among Orthodox Jews, focusing on the concept of "aggadic pluralism."Sacks explains that even though Orthodox Jews may abide by the same day-to-day religious law (or halacha) there is no uniform Orthodox position on matters outside halacha - for example, what the stories in Genesis mean, or the theological implications (if any) of the Holocaust.I thought his discussion of this issue was valuable for both non-Orthodox and Orthodox Jews (both of whom occasionally mistake the position of one or two rabbis or intellectuals with the "Orthodox position").

I think this book is an excellent guide to the differences among Jews, and would recommend it to anyone mystified by 20th-century Judaism. ... Read more

Product Description
Liturgy, which tries to foster the unity of the body of Christ, can be a countercultural experience since trends in modern American society emphasize individualism.

In John 17, Jesus prays that all may be one, a theme which appears in other ways in other parts of scripture (such as the image of one bread-one body ) and in writings throughout Christian history. In contrast, U.S. society is characterized by individualism and, according to various recent scholarly publications, is becoming more individualistic. Americans are less likely now to participate in social groups than they were a couple of decades ago. As a result, some aspects of good liturgy, for example, common posture or communal singing, are increasingly countercultural.

This book looks at the various ways the call to unity of the followers of Christ appears in scripture and in Christian tradition up to the present. It also looks at the works of secular authors such as Alexi de Tocqueville, Robert Bellah, Robert Putnam, and Jean Twenge, among others, and how they evaluate the challenges of American life, especially in the contemporary era, regarding the more and more individualistic behavioral aspects. It then goes through the General Instruction of the Roman Missal and shows how liturgy tries to bring about the unity Christ prayed for. Finally, the book tries to address the problems faced in making unity a reality in contemporary American culture. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Plausible theory or just wishful thinking?
As Freedman acknowledges in his Preface, this book is the written version of three talks given at the University of Michigan in 1988. As lectures, they are little more than a sketch of the elements that distinguish the three main sections of the Hebrew Bible: The Primary History (Torah and the Former Prophets), The Latter Prophets, and The Writings. He spends a fair amount of time looking at the symetry of the Hebrew canon and comparing the word counts of the Bible's different components. Freedman later expanded his discussion on the Decalogue found in the lecture on the Primary History into a full book called THE NINE COMMANDMENTS (I recommend it highly). I found the chapter on The Writings to be especially interesting. Freedman sees strong connections between Chronicles and Ezra-Nehemiah (where David, Jerusalem, and the Temple are idealized) and the Psalms and Wisdom literature (usually attributed to David's heir Solomon). It is also, only in The Writings that King Cyrus of Persia is mentioned. There's lots here to think about, whether you buy all of Freedman's arguments or not. And after so many years of scholarly efforts to parse the Bible into bits and pieces, it's nice to see someone who is willing to stand back a bit and look at the canon as a whole.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only Introductory
When Freedman sticks to the text of the Hebrew Bible, he makes a good case for his theme. Some of his thoughts are forced and speculative. As much as he would like to see himself free of bias, objectivity remains elusivewhen he cites opinions and not primary sources, such as the text itself. The book is only 100 pages and requires further elaboration. For a betterintroductory work, I recommend Steven Dempster, "An ExtraordinaryFact: Torah and Temple and the Contours of the Hebrew Canon," TyndaleBulletin 48.1 (1997), pp 23-56, and 48.2, pp 191-218. ... Product Description
The Unity of Reason is the first major study of Kant's account of reason. It argues that Kant's wide-ranging interests and goals can only be understood by redirecting attention from epistemological questions of his work to those concerning the nature of reason. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Helpful Analysis
Susan Neiman helped me structure my scarce prior knowledge. It is through her book that I feel I understand the relevance for today of Kant's analysis of the basis of science: The edifice of science represents a culture built on clearly defined assumptions that can not be justified from within the culture. So, this edifice also acts as a mind trap. ... Read more

Product Description
Despite its extraordinary richness, Islamic architecturehas rarely been studied for its conceptual and symbolicsignificance. In the Sense of Unity, a handsomely illustrated volumeand the first extended work of its kind, Nader Ardalan and LalehBakhtiar examine the architecture of Persia as a manifestation ofIslamic tradition and demonstrate the synthesis of traditional Persianthought and form. The most fundamental principle of Sufism, theinner, esoteric dimension of Islam, is that of unity inmultiplicity. This view sees in every aspect of reality a reflectionof a transcendent source which is given symbolic expression throughall of man's activities, most directly and importantly through hisworks of art. The authors of The Sense of Unity show how all theelements of the Islamic architecture of Persiafrom the simplestarchitectural unit to a complex urban environmentare woven aroundthis central doctrine and thus are best understood as multiplemanifestations of unity. The Sense of Unity is illustrated withphotographs, drawing, charts, and tables which are an integral part ofits argument and which exemplify, in abundant and striking detail, theprinciples discussed in the text. Presenting to the Western reader forthe first time the insights of the Iranian cultural tradition, thebook also offers a stimulating new way of thinking about man and hisrelationship to his milieu. ... Product Description
The bringing down of the Berlin Wall is one of the most vivid images and historic events of the late twentieth century. The reunification of Germany has transformed the face of Europe. In one stunning year, two separate states with clashing ideologies, hostile armies, competing economies, and incompatible social systems merged into one. The speed and extent of the reunification was so great that many people are still trying to understand the events. Initial elation has given way to the realities and problems posed in reuniting two such different systems.

The Rush to German Unity presents a clear historical reconstruction of the confusing events. It focuses on the dramatic experiences of the East German people but also explores the decisions of the West German elite. Konrad H. Jarausch draws on the rich sources produced by the collapse of the GDR and on the public debate in the FRG. Beginning with vivid media images, the text probes the background of a problem, traces its treatment and resolution and then reflects on its implications.

Combining an insider's insights with an outsider's detachment, the interpretation balances the celebratory and the catastrophic views. The unification process was democratic, peaceful and negotiated. But the merger was also bureaucratic, capitalistic and one-sided. Popular pressures and political manipulation combined to create a rush to unity that threatened to escape control. The revolution moved from a civic rising to a national movement and ended up as reconstruction from the outside. An ideal source for general readers and students, The Rush to German Unity explores whether solving the old German problem has merely created new difficulties. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good objective review
Mr. Jarausch has writen a detailed and comprehensive look at the latest German revolution and recreation of the German State.Beginning with the first tentative steps of protest to the packed streets of the Wende and the first holes in the Wall, we end the book with an elected and reunited Germany and an honest assessment of its pros and cons.

Very helpful here is that Mr. Jarausch eschews triumphalism, which mars the majority of works on German reunity.Whether you're in the pro or anti-reunion camp (and I'm in the latter) you can't fault Mr. Jarausch's thorough examination of causes and events, and deep insights into the motives and character of all parties concerned.I'll spare the reader my opinions as to why I think this unity was a rush job in more ways than one, and for less than noble motives, except to endorse a thorough reading of this book for all those interested in modern Germany and Europe.

One criticism to the publisher: it's annoying to change type fonts, especially in the middle of sentences.Printed on a Gutenberg press, perhaps? ... Read more
