Product Description
Margaret Wilmer Bartlett completed an MA in International Affairs at Drew University, studied International Relations and United Nations peacekeeping in depth, and applied this knowledge to the specific situation in Cyprus. As part of her research for this authoritative work she interviewed top government officials and authors including Tasos Tzonis, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Director of the Diplomatic Office of the President of the Republic of Cyprus. The fruit of her efforts is Cyprus, the United Nations, and the Quest for Unity. This book, broad in scope and execution, includes an introduction, history, comparative analysis of UNFICYP and UNEF II, a description of the Government of Cyprus, accession to the European Union, the Kofi Annan Peace Plan, a conclusion, and expansive appendices including the Charter of the United Nations. This is a unique work presenting a comparative analysis of UN forces in Cyprus with the UNEF II force sent to Sinai in 1973, a comprehensive discussion of how the government of Cyprus works successfully to represent its various political parties, and an overview of the fifth and final Kofi Annan Plan, under which northern and southern Cyprus would become the United Cyprus Republic, two constituent states governed by the federal government. In Cyprus, The United Nations, and the Quest for Unity, Bartlett has skillfully rendered a well-argued and extensively researched scholarly work that represents a significant contribution to our understanding of this troubled island. Above all, this compelling and comprehensive work is written in an inclusive, authoritative style that will prove thought provoking for people interested in politics or international relations, whether they are experts in the field or not. ... Product Description
Kant holds a key position in the history of modern philosophy as the last great figure to belong both to the Anglo-American analytic tradition and the Continental tradition. A scholar of Kant and German idealism, Dieter Henrich combines an encyclopaedic knowledge of Kant's texts with an understanding of the philosophers of preceding and succeeding centuries. Henrich's distinctive contribution has been to break through the entrenched stereotypes of the ontological and neo-Kantian schools of Kant interpretation in order to place Kant's major ideas in their historical and developmental context, demonstrating their enduring philosophical significance. Henrich has shown how Kant's attempt to overcome the dichotomy between rationalism and moral-sense philosophy led to a lifelong struggle to establish the unity of theoretical and practical reason and the inseparability of the motivational force of the principle of ethics from its function as a principle for ethical judgement. But Henrich has also shown how Kant's project of unification contained fundamental tensions that called forth the projects of such post-Kantians as Schiller, Fichte and Hegel, which explored new approaches within the Kantian framework. The essays in this book present a persuasive picture of the development of Kant's moral philosophy and give an account of the argumentative strategies determining all aspects of Kant's philosophy. They reflect Henrich's general interest in the unity of reason as well as his special interest in self-consciousness as both a key concept of modern philosophy and the key to the highly disputed interpretation of Kant's transcendental deduction of categories. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars just an opinion
I bought this book hoping for wisdom from Tom. It's in there, but you have to be willing to dig. Some of the writing is just plain mind numbing. The prose wanders and doesn't really go anywhere for the first third of the book. I was determined to find pearls, so I kept reading. I heard of Tom through the pursuit of natural horsemanship. In the book he is characterized as cryptic yet generous of his time. I am guessing he believed that the student must be willing to search and never give up. I get the feeling he did not just tell people "do this" or "do that". He tried to help the student find the answer in the same way we must help our horse to find the answer. I didn't pay much money for it but I wish I learned more about Tom from reading it than I did. I guess he put about as much of himself into it as was comfortable for him. I don't know if he was a humble man, or thought one should learn from others and not books when it comes to horses. There's enough to understand a bit about his ways, but it was his way with everyone, everything. There's a cute story about him dealing with a pesky feline that really illuminates the mystery but you have to be able to "see" what he did and understand why, then compare and contrast with how others may have handled the situation. If you are the type who leaves no stone unturned you will probably find this book worth your time.

5-0 out of 5 stars True Horsemen are hard to find
and as some have mentioned, even harder to understand at times. If you are serious about learning the art of horsemanship and want to have the deep understanding of the horse it takes to do so this is one of only a handful of books I recommend. It is not a riding manual, a quick fix for horse problems, or a style even of horse training and communication between horse and human. It is more a sharing of experience and knowledge to help the student of horsemanship develop a way of thinking and approach which opens up the door for communication with the horse. This is not a book you will read then put on the shelf to collect dust. It is a book you will go back to time again as your understanding of the grows.

1-0 out of 5 stars He may communicate with horses but not with humans
I could Not follow the ramblings of his mind. The reviews from his students was OK, but not worththe purchase of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book for the Thoughtful Horseman
Tom Dorrance was never a "how to" kind of "trainer." He often disliked being too specific because he felt that it focused people too narrowly, and kept them from reaching for the "bigger picture," or a broader feel and awareness of the horse and their environment. His book is no different. It is not poorly written in the slightest. It was never intended as a how-to on training horses, but an acknowledgement of what real rapport between horse and human feels like, the mindfulness it takes to get inside, and the willingness to live in a world somewhat different than the one we've been taught to see and experience. The CD of his book is very helpful to anyone having difficulty understanding the way he presents his ideas on the page.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Next time, I will take the time to read the reviews. If you were standing there with Tom as he was talking, it might of made sense. But I wasn't so therefore it was vague and frustrating. I have a hunger for Natural ways versus old school and like to pass my books to others with the same heart. I can't even pass the book to someone else. Maybe it was Milly's first book? ... Book Description: Jewish Awarness Ministries. Soft Cover. Book Condition: New. New and unmarked copy. A Theological Study on the Plurality and Tri-unity of God in the Hebrew Scriptures. The importance of this critical study can not be separated from the eternal destiny of Jewish souls. If you are witnessing to Jewish friends (or desire to do so), this book will enable you to present the Bible in a way that will help reach the lost of Israel. Many Christian scholars down play the significance of the Tri-unity of God in the Hebrew Scriptures. Judaism rejects the Tri-unity and the incarnation of God as completely incompatible with Jewish belief. Did the Church create the Trinity out of the New Testament, or was God a tri-unity all throughout the Old Testament and Judaism missed it? Judaism, with every ounce of strength, completely rejects the whole idea that God is a plurality, and that the Messiah could be God. The issue of this book is: Can the plurality or tri-unity of God be clearly proven from the Hebrew Scriptures alone, thus substantiating the fact that the promised Messiah is God and that God is one, yet a plurality? ... Now available in paperback with a new preface by the author, this award-winning book breaks new ground by challenging traditional concepts of community in political theory. William Corlett brings the diverse (and sometimes contradictory) work of Foucault and Derrida to bear on the thought of Pocock, Burke, Lincoln, and McIntyre, among others, to move beyond the conventional dichotomy of "individual vs. community," arguing instead that community is best advanced within a politics of difference.

You will also discover common troubleshooting solutions, such as performance monitoring and the importance of data collection for predicting future system requirements.

Cisco Unity Fundamentals begins by introducing the engineering aspects of Cisco Unity and then moves quickly into the hardware and software platforms. Part I focuses on the administration of Cisco Unity, describing the features, general setup, and global settings. Part II describes installation and discusses various types of integration with Cisco CallManager and other telephone systems, including Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) proxy. Part II also delves into networking with other voice-messaging systems. After reading Cisco Unity Fundamentals, you will understand the system, configuration, and on-going maintenance issues associated with a successful Cisco Unity deployment.

This book is part of the Cisco Press Fundamentals Series. Books in this series introduce networking professionals to new networking technologies, covering network topologies, example deployment concepts, protocols, and management techniques.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, was hoping for more
This book covers Unity 4.0, I was hoping it covered a little more such as different versions of Unity, however it is still a good book, the only reason why i'm not too happy is because I pretty much knew what was in the book but again, it is informative and if you want to learn Unity (4.0), this is the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best Cisco Press book I've read
Let me preface this review by saying that I appreciate the difficulty involved with writing a book.I also loathe people who simply criticize the efforts of others. Finally, I have no doubt the authors are accomplished and intelligent people.

All that being said, the book was pretty bad.It adds nothing I couldn't have gotten from reading from the Cisco documentation about Unity. It was simply an overview of features and a retread of basic principles behind system maintenance.

I'm trying to think of a concise way to make this review useful to others.Rather than me list all the things that made the book not that great, I'll use two examples of other Cisco Press books that had qualities I liked and that this book lacked.

Cisco CallManager Fundamentals was written by the people who developed Call Manager. It described the whys and history behind Call Manager, furthering your understanding of the products and creating a framework from which you can organize the vast number of things you can do with Call Manager.

Cisco Voice Gateways and Gatekeepers takes three disparate protocols - MGCP, SIP, H323 - and some difficult concepts - IPIPGWs, dial plans, TCL scripts - and explains them all in the context of VoIP networks.First, it provides the background and then, unlike either Cisco CallManager Fundamentals or Cisco Unity Fundamentals, it goes to the 5 foot level, providing specific configuration and then explanation of that configuration.

I'm not shilling these two other books; they don't cover Cisco Unity in anyway so they aren't its competition in that fashion.I'm not a Top 1000 reviewer who's about to say "buy this book instead!".I'm just a person studying for my CCIE who found myself thinking many times while reading and eventually skimming this book, "this is so bad!"

Again, the authors are in all likelihood nice people. And I do understand Unity a little better for having read the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
Cisco Unity Fundamentals is a great book to figure out what is going on with Unity.

I used this book a lot and it helped.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage for the Unity Administrator
For those of us who live in the blurred world of networking and telecommunications, Cisco System's Unity Unified Communications System is probably a product that is familiar to you, at least by name.Functioning as a unified messaging platform, Unity has enough range to function as standalone voicemail or tie voicemail into your existing e-mail system. As the primary messaging component of Cisco's AVVID solution, Unity is tied to many of the devices in the Cisco product line, most notably CallManager, a Voice over IP PBX system.

Cisco Unity Fundamentals is centered on version 4 of the application, doing a very notable job of covering the topics that concern those who have to work with Unity or may be considering it as a solution. The books is basically divided into two sections; Administration and Engineering.Unity Fundamentals starts by baby stepping through the concept of unified messaging for those who are new to the concept then step by step covers the setup, customization, and maintenance of Unity.Cisco supported best practices for topics like backup and account creation are covered under the Administration section, which makes the book handy as a quick reference in these matters.

Once into the Engineering section, almost every screen in the Web based application is covered, in addition to the large number of external tools that have been created by the Unity community for tasks not performed by the application itself. When discussing phone system integration the authors are very careful not to lean too hard towards CallManager, instead providing fairly generic instructions allowing for people who are using the twenty plus other PBX systems supported by Unity. One drawback of the book is that it is light on Microsoft Exchange, upon which Unity systems are based.

All in all this a good book for a topic that is generally covered in classroom based training, giving those of us who prefer to use independent methods for learning options. With the new Unity based certifications available this book will probably become very popular, but should not be used as a sole method for certification preparation due to its lack of covering the underlying applications like Microsoft Exchange and SQL.From the standpoint of those just wanting to administer an in place Unity system or get an overview of the system, you really couldn't ask for a whole lot more.By covering the system and its surrounding applications for multiple scenarios there is something for everyone in Cisco Unity Fundamentals.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Underlying Theory Under Unity.
Unity is the official unified messaging system sold by Cisco. It integrates voice, voicemail, video and data through a single telephone line. It complements the full range of Cisco IP-Based voice solutions.

As the Fundamentals book in the seriesthis book is concerned with the basic environment the system establishes. This book gives the underlying theory along with the conceptual "here is what you can do" information so that the capabilities of the system can be fully understood during the planning phase. The Cisco Unity Deployment and Solutions Guide for how to set up and run the systems.

As is always the case tieh the Cisco books, the information given here is exhaustive and complete. Except that it's almost 400 pages long, this is what I call the first forty pages of the manual. It's the part that explains just it is that you are trying to do. ... Read more

Product Description
Though the demise of one or another African state has been heralded for nearly five decades, the map of the continent remains virtually unchanged. By and large, these states are judged failures. And yet they endure. Pierre Englebert asks: why do these oppressive and exploitative, yet otherwise ineffective, structures remain broadly unchallenged? Why do Africans themselves, who have received little in the way of security, basic welfare, or development, continue to embrace their states and display surprising levels of nationalist fervor? He finds his answer in the benefits that sovereign weak states offer to Africa's regional and national elites - and to those who depend on them.Englebert carefully articulates the manner in which international sovereignty is translated into domestic legal command - and the sorrow that ensues. He also offers some corrective 'policy fantasies'. Effectively combining theory, cross-national quantitative methods, and case studies, his book reveals a pattern of reproduction of a predatory, dysfunctional state in which human integrity is sacrificed to its territorial counterpart. ... Product Description

In the year 2000 the World Health Organization estimated that 85 percent of fifteen-year-olds in Botswana would eventually die of AIDS. In Saturday Is for Funerals we learn why that won't happen.

Unity Dow and Max Essex tell the true story of lives ravaged by AIDS—of orphans, bereaved parents, and widows; of families who devote most Saturdays to the burial of relatives and friends. We witness the actions of community leaders, medical professionals, research scientists, and educators of all types to see how an unprecedented epidemic of death and destruction is being stopped in its tracks.

This book describes how a country responded in a time of crisis. In the true-life stories of loss and quiet heroism, activism and scientific initiatives, we learn of new techniques that dramatically reduce rates of transmission from mother to child, new therapies that can save lives of many infected with AIDS, and intricate knowledge about the spread of HIV, as well as issues of confidentiality, distributive justice, and human rights. The experiences of Botswana offer practical lessons along with the critical element of hope.

Although the book does a great job of enlightening the reader of the detrimental effects of HIV/AIDS, I would have liked to see more of a straight forward story following certain characters, but minus that, SUPERB BOOK!

Hopefully after my studies, I can help these people here, and truly make an effort, like many are already, to stop this horrendous disease. ... Read more

Product Description
Why not, then, build a temple, not to God . . . but build a temple to man, appropriate to his uses as a meeting-place, in which to study man himself for his God's sake? A modern meeting-house and a good-time place.--Frank Lloyd Wright

Unity Temple of Oak Park, Illinois, was considered a modern masterwork from the moment it was completed in 1908. Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) sought to produce a structure as dynamic as the congregation that would occupy it, finding inspiration in the liberal nature of Unitarian thought when creating the groundbreaking design. Wright's use of reinforced concrete was revolutionary for the time, making Unity Temple the first concrete monolith in the world. Inside, warm, inviting hues complement the red oak trim, and skylights and high clerestory art-glass windows fill the space with natural light. The building, which continues to serve its original purpose as a meeting-house for worshipers, is also admired for its superb acoustics. Wright was extremely proud of his design and wrote extensively about it in his autobiography.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Unity Temple: A Good Time Place provides an intimate tour of one of Wright's most beloved buildings. Architectural historian Patrick F. Cannon discusses the history of Unity Temple, from Wright's design proposals to its value today as a National Historic Landmark. More than forty-five artful color photographs by James Caulfield, along with historical photographs and floor plans, are featured, accompanied by Cannon's descriptive captions. This book celebrates the ingenuity of a master architect whose vision is evident in every element of Unity Temple. ... Read more

Product Description
Marianne Paget's The Unity of Mistakes has long been considered a landmark text on the nature of medical error. Paget—who herself died because of a medical error—argued that mistakes are an intrinsic part of the clinical process. Encompassing a much wider range of error than the terms "malpractice," "incompetence,"or "negligence" denote, The Unity of Mistakes takes an existential view of medical work in which things go wrong as a matter of course, and probes what Paget called the "complex sorrow"that can result when things do go wrong. This new paperback edition contains a Foreword by Joan Cassell, anthropologist and author of Expected Miracles: Surgeons at Work.

"I began this study when I became aware of the anguish of clinicalaction and of the moral ambiguity of being a clinician, a person whoacts, acts sometimes mistakenly, and, therefore, lives with theexperience of being wrong." With this statement, Marianne Pagetintroduces her study of medical mistakes and their meaning. Using asher "text" in-depth interviews with forty doctors, she explores thesubjective experience of physicians who inevitably make mistakes.

Paget argues that mistakes are an intrinsic feature of medical work which she calls an error-ridden activity. Mistakes involve action and action contains risk. Since medical mistakes put at risk human beings (not just the acted upon but the actors), her concern is with the subtle effects this endemic danger has upon clinical work.

Through close textual analysis, the author examines the ways in which particular actions (which seemed right at the time) are recognized as errors and responded to. Her study encompasses a much wider range of error than the terms "malpractice," "incompetence," or "negligence" denote. She takes an existential view of medical work in which things go wrong as a matter of course and probes what she calls the "complex sorrow" that can result. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Clinical mistakes are inevitable
I give this book three stars for the conclusion that mistakes in clinical practice are inevitable. Otherwise, I expected more from this monograph.

The author discusses rather philosophical aspects of clinical mistakes, without attempting some sort of classification. Some examples given I personally would not considered a mistake, but rather an unfavorable statistical play. For instance, if the clinical dat and tests point to a diagnosis with high probability but at the end the diagnosis is wrong, this is not a mistake in its pure sense. In clinical practice you seldom make a choice between the risk and no risk, but rather between different risks, and this idea has been around for a long time.

I expected this book to focus on actual mistakes, such as administering a wrong drug, operating on the wrong site or misinterpreting the clinical information, discussing systems and ways of preventing this and their limitations. Instead, there is a lot of musing on emotions and sorrow and exerpts from interviews with doctors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Macrocosm, Microcosm
A demonstration that scientists are Otherworldly, aspiring through probabilities to the possible, in tune with the Oneness which permeates All.
I peruse this book often, in my senior years, thinking what might have been and what is yet to be. And it makes me appreciate the Now.
This book should be required reading for all youngsters.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good collection of thoughts, well expressed
I borrowed this book from a fellow traveller in China, nine years ago.Though not that deep an investigation it raises some stimulating questions and achieves it's goal of showing similarities in what for many, aredifferent fields of investigation.

I wrote the title and ISBN down atthat time I borrowed it and have been looking for the book ever since. Itdeserves to come back into print.
