Product Description
The dictionary defines meditation as "continued or extended thought; reflection;
contemplation."
So what does this mean in real life? Just what is this thing called meditation?
Often we get overwhelmed in the course of our daily life. This can lead to stress and
tensions that can ultimately affect our health. Using meditation on a regular basis gives
our mind a chance to quiet itself and adjust to the stresses and strains that are part and
parcel of our modern daily life.
Usually, people meditate in a quiet space, free from distraction. There are many different
methods of meditating, which we will cover later, but they all lead to the same place.
Meditation itself is simply the process of quieting our mind. Gradually, your mind
becomes calmer. The "chatter" that's often there becomes less. And you start to move
mentally to a more tranquil place. ... Read more

"Ronald Bruzina's superb translation... makes available in English a text of singular historical and systematic importance for phenomenology." -- Husserl Studies

"... a pivotal document in the development of phenomenology... essential reading for students of phenomenology twentieth-century thought." -- Word Trade

"... an invaluable addition to the corpus of Husserl scholarship. More than simply a scholarly treatise, however, it is the result of Fink's collaboration with Husserl during the last ten years of Husserl's life.... This truly essential work in phenomenology should find a prominent place alongside Husserl's own works. For readers interested in phenomenology -- and in Husserl in particular -- it cannot be recommended highly enough." -- Choice

"... a thorough critique of Husserl's transcendental phenomenology... raises many new questions.... a classic." -- J. N. Mohanty

A foundational text in Husserlian phenomenology, written in 1932 and now available in English for the first time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the Best book in Phenomenology
Eugen Finks Sixth Cartesian Meditation was written as the 6th part in addition to Husserls 5 part Cartesian Meditations which Husserl gave as a lecture course in 1929.Fink himself was Husserls editor and a student of his phenomenology. Fink worked so closely with Husserl and with his writtings that he had mastered not only Husserls phenomenology but also the phenomenological method of epoche and reduction. The phenomenological reduction is a technique by which the subject makes a radical psychological shift in his thinking about the world, a total rejection of the cultural, scientific, and natural pressupositions and beliefs that prevent knowledge of and grasping of truth [transcendental reallity].There are in general two kinds of phenomenologists, outsider phenomenologists (those who exclusively study the phenomenological movement and history, or believe in it's philosophical extractions), and insider phenomenologists (those who live in the reduced state of consciousness, perform the psychical act of phenomenological reduction and hence go beyond philosophy and science).History records that most likely Husserl himself was the only insider phenomenologist, however this book reveals that Fink also was an insider. In my opinion Fink not only did phenomenological science in the same manner as Husserl, I think Fink actually whent beyond Husserl.

The Sixth Meditation not only lays the foundations for the idea of a transcendental theory of method, ie. methods of the "how to" performing the phenomenological reduction of human cosciousness, but also plans to endevour into a phenomenology of phenomenology.Fink was to have written the so-called "Seventh Metaphysic", from which actual metaphysical renderings were to have grounded phenomenology as a metaphysics, as ontology - and hence as a truely accepted rational science. Before this could be completed the Nazi political movement came to power and Fink was exiled from Germany.

This dialectic masterpiece also has textual notations by Husserlcontained in the Appendices at the end of the book where Husserl applies Finks groundings of the transcendental methodic. The Appendices discuss actual political extractions for phenomenology.......with such things as "the phenomenological community" Husserl reveals his interest for phenomenology as a globalized state of co-awakening human consciousness.

Here I will sample quotes from Part One of the book:

"Instead of inquiring into the being of the world, as does traditional "philosophy" dominated by the dogmatism of the natural attitude, or, where inquiry is not satisfied with that, instead of soaring up over the world "speculatively", we, in a truly "Copernican revolution", have broken through the confinenment of the natural attitude, as the horizon of all our human possibilities for acting and theorizing, and have thrust forward into the dimension of origin for all being, into the constituitive source of the world, into the sphere of transcendental subjectivity"

"The phenomenological system itself as the architectonic of transcendental philosophy cannot be drawn up ahead of time, but is only to be obtained from the "matters themselves" by passing through concrete phenomenological work"

"transforming himself through the deepest self-reflection, man transcends himself and his natural human being in the world, by producing the transcendental onlooker, who as such, does not go along with the belief in the world, with the theses on being held by the world-experiencing human"

"In the phenomenological reduction there occurs the "awakening"of the transcendental constitution of the world, and the process of coming to transcendental self-consciousness is accomplished. In and by the thematizing of the phenomenological onlooker constituitive cosmogony comes to itself, steps out of darkness and "being-outside-itself" into the luminosity of transcendental "being-for-itself""

What is interesting to note in the development of phenomenology is the effect Heideggers ontology in Being and Time has had on Husserls writtings. For the pressence of a concern for being, and justifications for pure phenomenology, justifications for the subordination of phenomenology over hermeneutic ontology is made clear in Finks book. Both the language and the intent behind the dialectic has changed, for Husserls Cartesian Meditations and this Sixth Meditation by Fink. For me, this book is the cullmination of all phenomenological efforts, the ressolution of the phenomenological movements place in history and the foundation for future institutions of evolutionary thought-science.

Bruzinas translation of Finks manuscript is courageously correct, nothing in this translation has been compromised or dummied down. Not only that but the fonting, bracketing, and italics usedcomplement the cryptic elegance of the text.I reccomend this publication to anyone who seeks the deepest truths and has a likeing for the most advanced systems of knowledge.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is important
The "Sixth Cartesian Meditation" engages with crucial issues of what we might call the place of phenomenology in the human (social, existential, etc.) world, and the place of various aspects of the human world (e.g., science, phenomenology itself...) in phenomenology. The positions stated are generally described as being only beginnings of approaches to issues each of which requires a great deal of work which is beyond the scope of the text. And it seems to me that there is ample room for questioning whether the positions sketched out (or at least translated -- I have no idea what the original is...) are always beyond dispute in all their particulars. But it is a rare book that even *tries* to raise these issues, and I think the general outline presented for phenomenology as offering the [only] way to a radical and universal transformation of human life, such that all human existence hitherto will, in retrospect, be seen to have been naive, limited, etc., is sound. This is an extremely important book (of course there are others, but this one is short, and, for the difficulty of its subject matter, accessible). The task of humanity in our time is to get on with carrying out the detailed path of thinking it outlines, and, thereby, bringing that incommensurably better world into being. At the very least, the book helps us understanding how far our present "culture" falls short of whatphenomenology makes possible for us. To adduce a phrase from Hermann Broch's _The Sleepwalkers_: "Raised high above the clamour of the non-existent...." ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars W A S T EO FT I M E! ! ! !
OK, Being the poor married man that I am (Wife is from another country, so immigration fees are killing me), I decided to try and learn how to do Transcendental Meditation on my own. I ordered this book because it states that it tells you how to do it step-by-step. This is false. Let me tell you what this book has in it: Gossip. Conversations with this Patricia Drake Hemmingway lady between her and her supposed friends about doing TM and who else they know who is doing TM. Stories about how her and her friends traveled to the TM courses/lectures. The conversations that took place with her and her friends after she got back from the TM courses/lectures. (Not about what they learned while there.) And about 10 chapters on how TM has helped people deal with work stress. - This book is basically a poorly written ad for TM. (Which by the way, has gone up from the 1970's price of about $125, to the new 2007 pricetag of $2,500, base price. So apparently only the rich have stress.) I also think that this Patricia lady likes to hear herself talk, and this book is the fix that gets her going. L A M E. Don't waste your time or money, because you are going to need it all to purchase your two-and-a-half-thousand-dollar mantra.

Her Book is so straight-forwardly written that for the very first time meditation for the masses is not only possible but, with this highly readable, easy to understand manual, even probable ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Find out if TM is worth the money for you.
Even though this book is now 35 years old, it is still the best and most inspiring introduction to Transcendental Meditation I know of.The author makes it clear that it is impossible to learn the actual technique from this or any other book, but, as a long time meditator myself, I know that most people I've given the book to have wanted to take anin-person course after reading it.

That's because it reveals in a very accessible way the deep principles underlying the mechanics of the technique rather than just reciting a series of testimonials. The technique is worth the time and money needed to take the personal course of instruction, and this book will help you determine if it's for you.It covers everything from the practical benefits of increased energy, productivity, clarity of mind, resistance to disease, harmonious relationships, and world peace to an understanding of how one incredibly simple process could have such an impact.

1-0 out of 5 stars Tight lips sink ships where this system is concerned
Very dissapointed in getting this one.

There is no directions or guidence in this book.
It only tells about fluff regarding past students and their findings for increasing mind power. Only statistics that have been shown from past meditators as far as lowering blood pressure Etc.. in Chapter 2, which was the only interesting part to the whole book because it showed graphs (and that material was copywritten by other people in the 60's-70's and thrown in for filler)

People charge thousands to learn this meditation system so what a crying shame it is that there isn't ANY viable information on it to share/ teach others with.

5-0 out of 5 stars My experiences with TM support the thesis of Forem's book
I've read most of the popular books on TM.Jack Forem's was the earliest and unique in that Mr. Forem knew the founder of TM, personally.

Because of Jack Forem, I started TM, and although some of the ancillary programs associated with TM are beyond my competence, the basic technique really works.

I'm grateful to Mr. Forem for introducing me to a very practical technique that doesn't require I adopt new beliefs or lifestyle, and one which has earned the respect of many like myself who look for the sort of proofs demanded by the western scientific paradigm.

When I read Forem's book, I had no idea I would ultimately work in the field of biotechnology and health care.I have been intrigued, therefore, that NIH-funded studies, published in respected peer-reviewed journals ( Stroke, Am Jrnl Cardiology ) have documented numerous health benefits - reduction of hypertension and indices of atherosclerosis and CHD from practicing TM 20 minutes twice daily. ... Published in 1825 after some three decades of consuming research, The Physiology of Taste is the most famous book ever written about food. It remains among the most comprehensive, stimulating, and just plain enjoyable works ever published on the subject of the senses and their pleasures. In a work spiced with style and wisdom, Brillat-Savarin declares that "Animals feed themselves; men eat; but only wise men know the art of eating."

M.F.K. Fisher's translation of Brillat-Savarin's masterpiece, originally published in 1825, is a true marriage of minds andsensibilities, a classic against which all subsequent gastronomicalwriting must be measured. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I had hoped.
I absolutely adore M.F.K. Fisher. I read her books over and over and delight in them every time. She had such great things to say about 'The Physiology of Taste.' and such reguard for Brillat-Savarin's wit that I couldn't wait to read her translation of his book. Instead of great wit, I felt it was the musing of a man who was a bit of a snob when it came to food. He clearly thinks himself superior to all others in matters of taste and is not afraid to let you know it. This was a great disappointment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meditations
The previous reviewer has it exactly right. This is a book of meditations on the pleasures of food. It is written by a man in whose company it would have been a great pleasure to eat and drink. It is written for people who have the capacity to taste and rejoice in tasting. It is translated by the most original food writer of the 20th Century, and illustrated (in my edition) by the estimable Wayne Thiebaud.
What's the point of a book of meditations? In this case, it's to provoke your appetite and deepen your pleasures in satisfying that appetite. I recommend a page or two after dinner, at least three nights a week and washed down with good red wine.

5-0 out of 5 stars An elegant journey in gastronomy
Gastronomy, in strict definition, studies the culture of food. Therefore, the Physiology of Taste, unlike a myriad of other volumes, stands out in it's attention to all aspects of gastronomical study and understanding. Not only it is incredibly detailed in an eloquent exploration of Sicilian history but compliments this journey with relevant recipes and gastronomical description. At the heart of the matter lies the subtlety with which the author connects the text and taste to indulge any person interested in the true depth of Sicily.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb book, superbly translated
NOTE: This review refers to ISBN 1-58243-103-5.This is a reprint edition of the original Heritage Press publication, in 1949, of M.F.K. Fisher's translation of Brillat-Savarin.As issued, the book is simply titled "The Physiology of Taste, or, Meditations on Transcendental Gastronomy."

Now, with those details out of the way, let me make bold to say that this is one of the world's great books!

When I first began reading it, I became annoyed: "Who is this Frenchman, who thinks he can write about, and tell me about, everything under the sun?"For the book contains many, many digressions.I have seen it referred to as a "cookbook," which is wildly wrong -- it is MEANT to be a book about food and the art of cooking food. And no less about the art of eating food.

But the many digressions are the key to this wonderful book.

A brief biography: born in 1755, trained as a lawyer, Brillat-Savarin became the mayor of his home town, Belley. But he fled France at the time of the Revolution, and went to America. After his brief exile, he returned to Paris and served as a judge in the court of appeals. He spent the last twenty-five years of his life living peacefully, and writing this book.

Did he know that he was creating a masterpiece?Interesting question!

As his intrepid translator, M.F.K. Fisher comments, this seems to be a book which will last more than a century or two.It may well live for thousands of years.

WHY?

Because of the personality and intelligence of the author!Just like Fisher, I wish that I had been one of his friends! And, when push comes to shove, one purpose of a library is to provide an army of friends, hopefully intelligent, gentle, serene, and perceptive.Brillat-Savarin is all of these.

One sample discussion that I can recall from memory is about the ability of various men to enjoy tasty food. And Brillat-Savarin puts his point simply and unforgettably: there are men born blind, and men born lame, and men born deaf.On the other hand, there are men born with sight, men born with normal mobility, and men who can hear.In the same way, some men are born with an inability to appreciate delicious food, due to a lack of taste-buds on the tongue or whatever, BUT there are men who are born loving tasty food -- and I am writing my book about and for these people! :-)

Be careful about buying this book!It may wind up on your nightstand for a long, long, time.Fine wine indeed, from a truly vintage mind -- and a truly fine translator.

Also beware: it may make you hungry! :-)

4-0 out of 5 stars Important socially, historically, and culturally--but not aestetically
After reading some of the reviews concerning this book, I can certainly agree with much of the praise as well as the criticism.Filled with pithy euphimisms, chunks of this wonderful adventure in gastronomy are a revealing look at the life of the well-to-do author; other morsels seem be out of place, dry of wit, and ill-seasoned.Nonetheless, this is still a good read--there are some fascinating ancedotes as to life in the "new" United States which Savarin reports on after an adventure in the newly independent colonies.Worthy of any well-stocked bookshelf. ...
