ALFRED RUSSEL WALLACE - EVOLUTION OF THE SPIRIT
This pamphlet will be of great interest to Alfred Russel Wallace researchers, who was the 'other Darwin'. It will also be of interest to historians of the Victorian period, and of the history of ideas in the interface between science and religion in general. It is a very clear statement by a Victorian scientist of Spiritualism as a 'scientific religion', promoting the concept of earthly evolution as but the first step in progress from this life to the next. The modern reprint pamphlet of sixteen pages is in fact only an extract - chapter IX of the book by Wallace, entitled 'Miracles and Modern Spiritualism'. It contains some of the key philosophy and moral stances of the Spiritualists. It scores a five if you fit the above categories, but probably a zero otherwise.

As Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Wallace, and other famous Victorians reacted against the Christian Church and also against the grim mechanistic materialism inherent in the atheistic philosophy of Charles Darwin's 'descent with modification', promoted by other atheists and heterodox philosophers in general, they had to have a middle way. They wanted to retain the vision of moral progress and the life of the spirit which would progress into eternity. It also seems to me to be a continuation of Paley's natural theology and the blended 'general revelation' of the intelligent person with the ferment of modern science. Wallace goes to great pains to present his spiritual ideas in scientific tones, eg, 'The hypothesis of Spiritualism not only accounts for all the facts (and is the only one that does so), but but is further remarkable remarkable as being associated with a theory of a future state of existence', (page 115). From the Christian standpoint it is also a 'religion of works', eg, 'the aristocracy is one of merit' (page 117) - the aristocracy here being located in 'the spheres of spirit-land'. A fascinating read of a somewhat fossilised creed, but not entirely dead today as it still gets airplay on the radio and space in the press, even if the tone is entirely non-scientific now. ...
