New version is better
I cherish this book I was not a practicing Buddhist when I first readthis book.I was introduced to Nichiren Buddhism and the Soka Gakkai by afriend in Spain and he told me that I should read "The Buddha in DailyLife" to learn everything I wanted to know about this Buddhism.Hewas right. Needless to say, I did, and have been practicing NichirenDaishonin's Buddhism with the Soka Gakkai of Mexico ever since.I can'tsay enough good things about this book.It changed my life.It helped mediscover true happiness.Muchisimas gracias Richard Causton!
"The Buddha in Daily Life - An Introduction to Buddhism" Tome, "The Buddha in Daily Life" is the greatest book ever writtenin the English language about the practice and study of NichirenDaishonin's Buddhism.I have bought at least ten copies over the past 5years and given them to everyone I know and love - whether they areinterested in practicing Buddhism themselves or simply curious about myBuddhist faith and its philosophy... Part one of"The Buddha in Daily Life" explains the Buddhist view of life -the theory of the Ten Worlds, the meaning of Nam Myoho Renge Kyo, and a fewinspiring experiences from people who have used this practice to changetheir lives for the better. Part two covers Buddhism in daily life - thethree pillars of Faith, Practice and Study, the Gohonzon and the SokaGakkai International. I highly recommend Richard Causton's "TheBuddha in Daily Life" to everyone interested in learning more aboutthe practice of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, as well as to everyone alreadypracticing. My own practice and understanding of Buddhism has been greatlyenriched by it - and for that, I am eternally grateful to the great Mr.Richard Causton.
Many insights Before writing this review I read the previousones and I was suprised by the reviewer from Canada's reaction.Perhapsthey have an ax to grind? Buy this book, read it, and make your ownjudgement.I found it very educational.

Editorial Review Product Description "The natural sympathy and understanding of people everywhere must be the soil in which the new humanism can thrive." For Daisaku Ikeda, whose words these are, education has long been one of the fundamental priorities of his work and teaching. And his emphasis on the intellectual legacy bequeathed to humanity by the great teachers of civilization is in this volume encapsulated by the notion of a "new humanism": a significant residue of wisdom that in the right circumstances may be passed on to future generations, expanding horizons, making connnctions between different cultures and encouraging fresh insights and new discoveries across the globe. These circumstances are perhaps most fully realized in the context of universities. And in promoting his core values of education and peace, the author has delivered speeches and lectures at more than twenty-five academies, colleges and research institutes worldwide. This stimulating collection, which includes the author's most recent lectures, ranges widely across topics as diverse as art, religion, culture and time, and draws creatively on the sages of ancient India, China and Japan as well as on visionary thinkers from every nation, including Tolstoy, Victor Hugo and Gandhi. I thought this book was great.
Very Interesting
a manifesto for political impotence Rather thanproviding eloquent insights into constructing a credible and perdurablepeace, Mr. Ikeda has written a manifesto for political impotence andalienation and a recipe for the blind-faith adherance to the dictates ofincorporeal hierarchs. "A Lasting Peace" and its phlegmaticattempts at elucidating a vision of a harmonious future without war is adisappointing failure when compared to other luminary works such asEmmanuel Kant's "Perpetual Peace" or Thomas Pangle's"Justice Among Nations : On the Moral Basis of Power and Peace."
Outstanding Insight, Profound Wisdom In the pursuit of peace, Daisaku Ikeda has lectured extensively atthe highest institutions of learning and research throughout the world. Regardless of one's faith, nationality or political views, Daisaku Ikedaexpounds what we can all agree is truth - rational, eternal, universaltruth. This book, as with most of Daisaku Ikeda's books, reminds usthat if we are ever to rid ourselves of superficial conflicts that escalateto full-blown wars, we must start by regarding the fundamental cause of ourconflicts. This is nothing more than our diluted sense of identity -clinging to superficial differences in human culture, language, skin color, and so on. Once we recognize our true identity as one human family, thenwe can begin to walk on the path of a true and lasting peace. I recommendthis book to anyone concerned with the issue of peace in both the world atlarge as well as their own communities.I recommend this book to anyoneintersted in learning about the practical applications of ancient yettimeless Buddhist thought in modern, everyday life.
Controversial Approach to Peace Human destiny, Ikeda insists, rests in the hands of each individualrather than in the institutions that have historically oppressed and misledhumanity. Because of this stance and its proven successes, his writingattracts attacks from fringe elements of all political stripes. Read thiscontroversial and historic book and make up your own mind. ... Editorial Review Product Description Who is Daisaku Ikeda? At one level, he is the leader of a religious movement--Soka Gakkai--which began in Japan, where it still has its headquarters, but which now claims 12 million adherents around the world. At another level, he is a globetrotting figure whose formal conversations with diverse writers, thinkers and diplomats--including Arnold Toynbee, Joseph Rotblat and Mikhail Gorbachev--have garnered him an international profile, as well as academic recognition. Perhaps above all else, Daisaku Ikeda is viewed as a campaigner for peace. And it is Ikeda's specific contribution to peacebuilding, notably through the central emphasis he has placed on the significance of dialogue, that this book explores: the first to do so in a concerted way. Olivier Urbain shows that while Soka Gakkai (the "value society") may stem from the medieval principles of Nichiren Buddhism, under Ikeda's leadership it has taken these classic wisdoms and transformed them. Now essentially classless and secularised, as well as adaptable and sensitive to modern challenges like resource shortages and climate change, this, argues the author, is a pragmatic approach to peace which has proved both popular and eminently transportable. |

Humanism Altruism and Righteous Compassion is the Way to Go
What we need today Quoting philosophers, historians, heroes, he sets out a guide to making peace possible."If you want peace, prepare for peace." In this time of war, war and more war, to know there are people actively working towards a peaceful planet and future is very encouraging.Ikeda explains how we each have to start with ourselves, our family, our community.Through dialogue, and a commitment to truly desire peace. For those who believe we do not have to go to war to make a peaceful world.
A refreshing change from the usual esoteric Buddhist fare

Profound Wisdom and Outstanding Insight In this book, "A Lasting Peace," Mr. Ikeda yetagain provides us with outstanding insights and his trademark wisdom, addressing many of the most important issues facing humanity today. Thisbook, like most of Mr. Ikeda's books, reminds us that if we are ever tobanish from this world the superficial conflicts that escalate to all-outwars, we must first regard the fundamental cause of such conflicts. Thisfundamental cause is nothing more than people's diluted sense of identity -people clinging to superficial differences in culture, race, and soon. As another reviewer wrote, the essential message of this book is toremind the reader that humanity must first recognize its true identity asone human family - then and only then will we begin to walk the path of atrue and lasting peace.
I liked it
How to Build an Authentic and Enduring Peace Our collective human destiny, Mr. Ikedainsists, is in the hands of each individual rather than in the governmentsand other institutions that have historically oppressed humanity. In"A Lasting Peace," Daisaku Ikeda once again demonstrates hisprofound insights and trademark eloquence, addressing the most pressingissue facing humanity now - how to build an authentic and enduring peace. Daisaku Ikeda, current president of the Soka Gakkai International, aBuddhist organization with 15 million members in 130 nations, has lecturedextensively at the highest institutions of learning and research throughoutthe world. This book, like every book of Daisaku Ikeda's I have read, reminds the reader that if humanity is ever to rid the world of superficialconflicts that escalate to war, we must illuminate the fundamental cause ofsuch conflicts - our diluted sense of identity - clinging to superficialdifferences in culture, race, religion and so on. "Once we recognizeour true identity as one human family, then we can begin to walk on thepath of a true and lasting peace."

Tina Turner Introduced Me To Daisaku Ikeda's Writings Tina mentioned Daisaku Ikeda as the person whobrought Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism, the practice of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo,to America. This is the Buddhist practice to which Tina attributes herspiritual fulfillment and strength. Thanks to Tina's explanations, I wasable to locate the Soka Gakkai International and from there I discoveredmany profound, inspirational and educational writings by Daisaku Ikeda. This book is just one of Mr. Ikeda's many contributions to further theunderstanding of Buddhist principles and their application in every daylife. I highly recommend that anyone interested in the Buddhist practiceof Nam-myoho-renge-kyo read the writings of Daisaku Ikeda to learn moreabout Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism. ... Read more |
