From Inside Cover Jacket of Book On the basis of over eighty interviewswith members and former members, a typology of the motivations which ledindividuals to affiliate with the movement is derived, and the processes bywhich members become further committed to the movement are explored. Thereasons which led a proportion of members to defect from the movement arealso described. Scientology has been notable for the extent to which ithas come into conflict with the state, medical agencies, and individualscritical of its practices. The author turns to the sociology of deviance toprovide a model to account for the development of a 'moral crusade' againstScientology and to explain the way in which the movement reacted andadapted to a hostile environment. This study should find a place oncourses in Religious Studies, the History of Religion, and the Sociology ofReligion. It will be essential material for any attempt to understand theform and place of the new religions in advanced industrial societies. It isalso like to be appropriate material for courses on the Sociology of SocialMovements. The controversial nature of the topic of this work may, howeverendow it with a market appeal beyond the confines of the academiccommunity." The Author Roy Wallis was born in 1945. After severalyears as a factory hand, barman, and pump attendant he took a 1st ClassHonours Degree in Sociology at the University of Essex. Folloing a periodof postgraduate research at Nuffield College, Oxford, he was awarded adoctorate for his work on Scientology. He subsequently became a Lecturer inSociology in the University of Stirling and has occupied the MorrisGinsberg Fellowhip in Sociology at the London School of Economics andPolitical Science.
